Summary

In the cmux NEXT DEV daily, verify and tip-dmg-build each download the 188 MB cmux-next-dev-daily-signed artifact. The runner job's owned pick usually sent them to the light owned pool, whose minis download about 5x slower than std minis on the same network. This PR limits that pick to the std class.

  • scripts/ci/e2e_runner_pool.py: new --owned-classes std, light,xl option. An auto pick names or waits on owned pools of those classes only, and an unknown class is refused (exit 2). It filters the same way --blacksmith-labels already does, after observe().
  • scripts/ci/simple_pool_picker.py: new owned_class(label) helper.
  • .github/workflows/cmux-next-dev-daily.yml: the runner job's pick() passes --owned-classes std. verify and tip-dmg-build now take one of three routes: a free std mini, Blacksmith room on their own fallback label, or a wait on std (which the owned-pool rescue still watches). Re-runs still go to Blacksmith as before.

Evidence (fleet dashboard job log, 24 h to 2026-10-30):

job light pool std pool
Verify signed cmux NEXT DEV 85 of 90 jobs, median 895 s, 71 hit the 15 min limit median 41 s
Build the unsigned cmux NEXT DEV tip DMG 80 of 84 jobs, median about 1050 s, 35 cancelled median 241 s
"Download the signed app" step 736-974 s (2.2-2.8 MB/s from blob storage) about 15 s (11.5-12.7 MB/s, same gateway, 1000baseT)

Performance

metric before after delta harness or run link
verify runtime 895 s median (light), 71 of 90 at the 15 min limit 41 s median (std) about -850 s per run dashboard jobs.json?since=24h + batched GraphQL step timings; after: the next DEV daily run after merge
tip-dmg-build runtime about 1050 s median (light) 241 s median (std) about -800 s per run same
owned Mac time on the two jobs about 45 h/day about 5 h/day about -40 Mac h/day same

Incremental builds and the SSD cache: neither job compiles. Both download the signed app the sign job made, so no cold compile is added anywhere and the shared fleet compile cache is not touched. Its only effect is where those two download-bound jobs run.

Risk (low): when std is busy and Blacksmith's own label has no room, verify waits on std instead of starting at once on a light mini. On light it ran 15 minutes and usually timed out, so the wait still comes out ahead. The light pool stays available to every other caller (no default changes).

Related open PRs: #27444, #27448 and #27451 route these jobs' Blacksmith fallback away from the stalled 12 vCPU label. They touch the same workflow but not the owned pick, so they don't overlap with this one.

Testing

  • python3 -I tests/test_ci_pr_runner_pool.py: 254 pass. New tests cover these cases:
    • a free light pool is taken without --owned-classes;
    • with --owned-classes std, a busy std pool is waited on;
    • Blacksmith room on the jobs' own label is taken before the free light pool;
    • a free std pool is still picked first;
    • an unknown class is refused.
  • python3 -I tests/test_cmux_next_dev_tip_feed.py passes, with a new check that the pick passes --owned-classes std.
  • Also passing: test_ci_simple_pool_picker.py, test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py, test_ci_fork_runner_routing.py, and actionlint on the workflow.

Observed / Not run

  • Observed: the test runs above, the 24 h job and step timings, and a download probe on the light and std minis.
  • Not run: a DEV daily dispatch with this change. The workflow dispatches from main, so the first run after merge is the after-run.

Summary by cubic

Restricts the cmux NEXT DEV daily verify and tip-dmg-build jobs to std-class owned Macs so the 188 MB signed-app download no longer lands on the light pool's minis, which took 736-974 s for it against about 15 s on std. Over 24 h to 2026-10-30, 85 of 90 verify jobs ran on light with an 895 s median (71 hit the 15 min limit) versus 41 s on std.

Written for commit 53d4d8b. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • The daily development workflow now selects only standard-class owned runners. Other owned runner classes are excluded from selection and waiting for that workflow.
    • The runner picker now supports filtering by owned runner class; without a filter, it continues to consider all classes.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for class filtering and invalid class values.

Both jobs download the 188 MB signed app. On the light owned pool's minis
that download took 736-974 s (about 2-3 MB/s), against about 15 s on a std
mini, so over 24 hours to 2026-10-30 verify ran 895 s median on light
(41 s on std) and 71 of 90 runs hit its 15 minute limit; tip-dmg-build ran
about 1050 s there against 241 s elsewhere. 85 of 90 verify and 80 of 84
tip-dmg-build jobs had landed on light.

e2e_runner_pool.py takes --owned-classes (std, light, xl; an unknown class
is refused): an auto pick names or waits on owned pools of those classes
only. The DEV daily runner job passes --owned-classes std, so verify and
tip-dmg-build take a free std mini, Blacksmith room on their own label, or
wait on std.

Tests: tests/test_ci_pr_runner_pool.py (254 pass),
tests/test_cmux_next_dev_tip_feed.py, test_ci_simple_pool_picker.py,
test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py, test_ci_fork_runner_routing.py; actionlint.

Walkthrough

The auto-picker accepts owned-runner class filters, validates them, and excludes non-matching owned pools from selection and waiting. The DEV daily workflow now requests the std class. Tests cover class identification, filtering, and invalid input.

Changes: Owned runner routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Owned-class identification and CLI validation
scripts/ci/simple_pool_picker.py, scripts/ci/e2e_runner_pool.py
The picker extracts classes from owned-family labels. The CLI accepts comma-separated owned classes and rejects values outside the supported classes.
Class-filtered pool selection
scripts/ci/e2e_runner_pool.py, tests/test_ci_pr_runner_pool.py
When classes are specified, the picker excludes other owned pools from selection and waiting. Tests cover matching classes, selection behavior, and invalid input.
DEV daily workflow restriction
.github/workflows/cmux-next-dev-daily.yml, tests/test_cmux_next_dev_tip_feed.py
The workflow passes --owned-classes std. The test checks the argument. Comments document reported transfer and verification timings.

  • manaflow-ai/cmux#25442: Establishes owned-Mac placement for the verify and tip jobs that this change narrows to the std class.
  • manaflow-ai/cmux#25847: Extends the same auto-pick contract with fleet waiting; this change limits which owned pools that path can select or wait on.
  • manaflow-ai/cmux#25902: Adds --wait-owned to the same workflow placement; this change restricts that wait behavior to std owned pools.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 53d4d

The DEV daily restriction is wired correctly. A separate UI auto-routing path ignores the new class option; this bounded CLI limitation should be fixed or explicitly tracked as follow-up.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is mostly complete. It explains the problem, resulting behavior, implementation, performance evidence, testing, observed results, and unrun validation. The Proof and Checklist sections from the template are omitted, but this is a CI-only change and the core review information is present.

Full details: Cmux Cloud Persistent Session And Early Input

Explanation

PASS: The diff changes CI runner-pool selection, owned-class filtering, workflow comments, and tests. It does not change Cloud terminal creation, cmux-tui transport, manual renderers, PTY readiness, input routing, or session auth/lease/revision handling. The cloud persistent-session rule therefore does not apply.

Full details: Cmux Swift Actor Isolation

Explanation

The pull request changes only one workflow, two Python production files, and two Python test files. The reviewed diff contains no Swift files or Swift code, so it introduces no Swift 6 actor isolation issue.

Full details: Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime

Explanation

PASS: The reviewed diff changes only one workflow YAML file, three Python files, and two test files. It contains no changed Swift source and introduces no production Swift synchronization or timing code. The check is not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main

Explanation

PASS: This PR changes CI runner-pool selection, the DEV daily workflow, and related Python tests. It does not change browser socket commands, WebKit/AppKit routing, socketWorkerMethods, processV2Command, or browser policy tests. The browser automation off-main failure conditions are therefore not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only a GitHub workflow, Python CI picker code, and Python tests. The reviewed diff contains no Swift changes and adds no agent-history, transcript, workspace scan, or synchronous main-actor load path. The custom check is not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness

Explanation

PASS: The reviewed diff changes only GitHub Actions YAML, Python CI scripts, and Python tests. It contains no production Swift, TypeScript, or JavaScript changes, so the cache-substitution condition does not apply.

Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps

Explanation

PASS: The production diff adds CLI validation and filters observed owned pools by class. It introduces no sleep, timer, polling loop, fixed backoff, or wall-clock synchronization. The existing wait_on_owned path returns a pool choice from one observed state; it does not delay execution. The new tests use deterministic mocks. The workflow comment and --owned-classes invocation are in GitHub Actions YAML, which the rule excludes.

Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

The production change adds one linear filter over the already observed owned-pool tuple in scripts/ci/e2e_runner_pool.py:620-626. owned_class() performs one regex match per pool. The class set is the fixed RUN_CLASSES set (std, light, xl). The existing owned-pool sort and selection were not expanded into a new nested or per-target scan. The workflow and tests do not introduce scalable collection processing.

Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency

Explanation

The pull request changes only GitHub workflow, Python CI scripts, and Python tests. The reviewed diff contains no Swift files or Swift code, so it does not introduce or expand the legacy Swift concurrency patterns covered by this check.

Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries

Explanation

The pull request changes only one workflow file, two Python CI scripts, and two Python test files. The reviewed diff contains no production Swift changes, so the Swift package-boundaries rule does not apply.

Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles

Explanation

PASS: The PR changes one workflow and CI picker/test files only. The diff contains no Package.swift dependency change, Xcode project package-reference change, Package.resolved change, or .gitignore change. The workflow change only adds --owned-classes std and does not invoke SwiftPM resolution. No SwiftPM lockfile policy condition is violated.

Full details: Cmux Swift Logging

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only Python, YAML, and test files. It adds no Swift files or Swift logging statements. The added stdout/stderr references are test mocks, not production Swift diagnostics.

Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy

Explanation

PASS. The diff changes only internal CI runner selection, CI comments, and tests. The new parser.error output at scripts/ci/e2e_runner_pool.py:585 is an operator/CI diagnostic for --owned-classes, not a cmux app UI, product CLI, or product API path. It exposes no secret, token, payload, upstream message, or other prohibited detail. The workflow and picker changes at .github/workflows/cmux-next-dev-daily.yml:293,403 remain internal CI behavior.

Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes only CI workflow logic, Python runner-pool helpers, and tests. Added text is operational CLI help/errors, developer comments, and test text. No Swift UI, app catalog, Info.plist, web UI, API response, rendered markdown, changelog, or locale data changes are present, so the full-internationalization rule does not apply.

Full details: Cmux Swiftui State Layout

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only a GitHub Actions workflow, Python picker code, and Python tests. The diff contains no SwiftUI changes, so it introduces none of the prohibited state, layout, row-store, or render-time mutation patterns.

Full details: Cmux Architecture Rethink

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only GitHub Actions YAML, Python CI picker code, and Python tests. It changes no Swift, SwiftUI, or AppKit code, and it introduces none of the architectural patterns listed in the rule.

Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts

Explanation

The diff changes only a workflow, two Python CI scripts, and two Python tests. Added lines are hand-written configuration, source, comments, and test logic. No logs, screenshots, recordings, temporary folders, caches, build output, dependency checkouts, broad artifact directories, or copied artifacts appear in the changed paths.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 4 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Match the --owned-classes std argument line instead of the substring.

The check passes when the text --owned-classes std appears anywhere in the Pick step's run block. A comment that contains that text satisfies it, even when the argument is no longer passed to e2e_runner_pool.py. Matching the whole argument line makes the check fail in that case. The current workflow passes the argument, so this only affects how well the test protects the restriction.

Pass --owned-classes into the UI auto route.

With owned_ui set to 1, a UI test run skips the simple picker and calls resolve(). resolve() does not receive the class set. Because of this, --owned-classes std does not restrict the owned pools that the UI route can select.

The path is: --requested auto, a --test-filter that names a UI test, --owned 1, --owned-ui 1, and --owned-classes std. ui_owned_runner() then selects the first owned pool in the order that has free slots, with no class check. auto_runner() calls decide() without owned_choices, so decide() can also choose a pool of any class.

Do not remove light pools from the order to fix this. decide() replays newer runs over the whole order, and owned_choices limits only the pools the current run may take. Pass the class-filtered set into the UI route as owned_choices, and apply the same filter in ui_owned_runner(). Add a test that combines a UI --test-filter, owned_ui=1, and --owned-classes std.
