Summary

Malformed cmux auth status, login, and logout commands currently execute even when trailing tokens are present; cmux auth team list does the same. This validates zero-argument auth verbs before any auth RPC or action and keeps the argument rules in the pure CLI parser.

Fixes #15743

Testing

  • swift test --package-path Packages/macOS/CmuxFoundation --filter CmuxCLIArgumentParserTests — passed 5 Swift Testing tests, including the new auth grammar coverage.
  • python3 scripts/verify-local.py --only swift-syntax --swift CLI/cmux.swift Packages/macOS/CmuxFoundation/Sources/CmuxFoundation/CmuxCLIArgumentParser.swift Packages/macOS/CmuxFoundation/Tests/CmuxFoundationTests/CmuxCLIArgumentParserTests.swift — passed.
  • python3 scripts/localization_catalog.py check --root . — strict validation passed for 10 catalogs and 9 locales with 0 parity errors; the follow-up moves the existing cli.auth.usage key/default without changing either.
  • No bundled-CLI app-host test or live sign-in/sign-out operation was run; the package test covers auth grammar, while the follow-up’s placement before SocketClient was syntax-checked and independently reviewed.

Changelog

Fixed: Reject trailing arguments for auth status, login, logout, and team list.

Demo Video

For UI or behavior changes, include a short demo video or screenshots (GitHub upload, Loom, or other direct link).

  • Video URL or attachment: N/A — CLI parser behavior with no visual UI change

Checklist

  • Behavior changes have added or updated tests, or Testing says why not
  • UI, settings, menu, schema, help-text or user-facing docs change: localization audited, and the result is stated above
  • New or changed v2 socket method allowlisted for cmux ssh: the relay authorization questions are answered above — N/A, no socket method changed
  • iOS connectivity, auth, lifecycle, workspace action, terminal I/O or mobile RPC contract change: deterministic soak coverage updated, or explained why existing coverage still applies, with the affected workload result recorded — N/A, macOS CLI argument validation only
  • User-facing docs updated if needed — N/A, the documented auth grammar is unchanged
  • Reviewed with a subagent before merge (cmux-review), and all bot and human review comments resolved

Summary by cubic

Fixes malformed cmux auth invocations executing even when passed trailing tokens or unknown subcommands. auth, login, and logout commands now validate their fixed-arity arguments in the pure CLI parser and return the usage error before the socket connection is opened or any auth RPC is dispatched. Fixes #15743.

Written for commit 4b15929. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid or unsupported authentication command arguments now display a usage message instead of being treated as a status request.
    • Extra arguments to status, login, or logout are rejected with a usage message.
  • New Features
    • Authentication commands accept status, login, logout, and team subcommands. Omitting the subcommand defaults to status.
    • The team command defaults to list when no team subcommand is provided.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in Packages/macOS/CmuxFoundation/Tests/CmuxFoundationTests/CmuxCLIArgumentParserTests.swift: Added parsesAuthSubcommands, with expectations for empty and documented auth arguments and for nil results when unknown arguments are appended to status, login, logout, or team-list arguments.
  • observed — Modified behavior in Packages/macOS/CmuxFoundation/Sources/CmuxFoundation/CmuxCLIArgumentParser.swift: Adds parseAuthSubcommand(_:), which lowercases the first argument and defaults to status. It returns nil when status, login, or logout has trailing arguments, or when team list has trailing arguments; team with no subcommand is treated as list. Other team subcommands and unknown subcommands are returned without additional argument validation.
  • observed — Modified behavior in CLI/cmux.swift: The command prepares the localized auth usage error and parses the subcommand for auth, login, or logout; a failed parse now throws that error.
  • observed — Modified behavior in CLI/cmux.swift: The auth command branch now requires a parsed subcommand and throws the usage error if it is absent, replacing lowercasing the first argument and defaulting to status.

Review of af8988874ef (both commits). Verdict: land it, once the CLA check can run. Everything below is non-blocking.

A review subagent built a throwaway SwiftPM package on Linux with the real CmuxCLIArgumentParser.swift plus a driver reproducing CLI/cmux.swift run() (pre-command global-flag loop, parse(), the early --help dispatch, your new pre-socket guard, the switch command auth case, and runAuthTeamCommand's own arity checks), then ran 47 hand-picked shapes and an exhaustive 3,615-case brute force over a 15-token alphabet. So the shapes below were executed, not read off the diff.

What holds up

  • Accepted, correctly: auth, auth status, auth login, auth logout, login, logout, auth status --json, auth --json status, auth status --id-format both, repeated flags, auth team, auth team list, auth team list --json, auth team use t_1, auth team create My Team, auth --help, auth status --help, auth -h, and auth Logout. Presentation flags are stripped by parse() before your guard sees the args, and --help/-h dispatches at CLI/cmux.swift:5010-5018, before the guard. Neither is a false positive.
  • Rejected, correctly: auth status --typo, auth login --typo, auth logout --typo, auth team list --typo, login --typo, logout --typo, auth logout extra, auth login status, auth status --token=x, auth status --token x, auth status -v, auth status --team x. auth takes no options, so all of those are genuinely malformed.
  • False-positive surface, complete: of the 3,615 argument lists, 1,230 flip from accepted to rejected, and 1,196 of those contain a real unexpected token. The other 34 are the ones whose only extra tokens are a bare -- or an empty string (cmux auth status --, cmux auth logout '', and permutations), because parse() deliberately keeps -- in remaining (CmuxCLIArgumentParser.swift:79-83). Every auth invocation in the repo was checked against that list: scripts/lib/mobile-attach.sh:193, scripts/e2e/mac-host.sh:55, skills/cmux-cloud-vm/references/commands.md:706-708, Resources/en.lproj/cloud-agent-skill.md:153, the docs, and cmuxTests/CLIAuthAliasTests.swift (which runs ["login"] and ["logout"]). Nothing regresses. The residual risk is a wrapper doing cmux auth status "$FLAGS" with FLAGS empty, and rejecting that is arguably right.
  • team validation is complete even though it looks asymmetric: CmuxCLIArgumentParser.swift:66-72 only guards team list, but use and create were already arity-checked in CLI/CMUXCLI+AuthTeam.swift:27 and :47. Verified by execution.
  • Error path matches the file's convention: CLIError(message: authUsage) keeps the default exitCode: 1 and goes to stderr, byte-identical to the message the removed default: case produced. 22 other CLIError(message: "Usage…") sites in CLI/cmux.swift do the same.
  • Mutation testing on parsesAuthSubcommands: 8 of 10 injected mutants died (inverted rejection, strictness narrowed to logout only, narrowed to status only, dropped team list check, team made strict for any trailing arg, reverted to old lenient behavior, count <= 2, and the empty-args default changed to login).
  • No em dashes or en dashes in the added lines. No BSL-licensed path is touched; CLI/ and Packages/macOS/CmuxFoundation/ are GPL-3.0-or-later. tests/test_ci_test_execution_registry.py and the four Swift-testing guards pass.

Worth a look, none of it blocking

  1. CmuxCLIArgumentParser.swift:62 drops .lowercased() without a test noticing. cmux auth LOGOUT does work today (executed), but nothing pins it. One assertion like parseAuthSubcommand(["LOGOUT"]) == "logout" closes it.
  2. Commit 2's "validate auth before socket connection" is half delivered: CmuxCLIArgumentParser.swift:73-74 returns the subcommand for unknown values, so cmux auth bogus still skips the guard, reaches client.connect(), and reports a socket failure instead of the usage message when the app is quit. Pre-existing, and default: return nil would finish the job with a byte-identical message.
  3. CLI/cmux.swift:5413-5418 hoists authArgs, authUsage and authSubcommand out of the case "auth" block, so every cmux list, cmux send and cmux hooks ... now does an array concat plus a String(localized: "cli.auth.usage") bundle lookup it never uses. Cheap, but cmux hooks enqueue is wall-clock budgeted (AgentHookEnqueueWallClock.budgetSeconds). Moving the three inside the if ["auth","login","logout"].contains(command) block costs nothing.
  4. The inner guard let sub at CLI/cmux.swift:5581-5583 is unreachable: the pre-socket guard at 5419 fires on the same three commands the dispatch at 5580 switches on, so authSubcommand is always non-nil there. Harmless.
  5. Only the parser is tested. Replacing parseAuthSubcommand(authArgs) at CLI/cmux.swift:5418 with the old authArgs.first?.lowercased() ?? "status" reintroduces the bug with a green suite. cmuxTests/CLIAuthAliasTests.swift already drives the real CLI against a mock socket and would be the natural home for a ["logout","--typo"] case. auth CLI silently ignores trailing arguments #15743 asked for pure parser tests, so this is a suggestion, not a gap in the ask.

Merge state

Four of the five required checks are green at af8988874ef: CLA policy guard, ci-status, Web complexity, web-validation. CLA Assistant has not run at all, and that is the one thing holding this. If you have not signed the CLA yet, doing that should let it report and the PR can go in.

The branch is 215 commits behind main but test-merges clean (only CLI/cmux.swift auto-merges, no conflicts), and in the merged tree the guard still sits immediately before var client = SocketClient(...) with nothing inserted between. So no catch-up is needed for correctness. Nice, tight fix :)

Thanks @nightcityblade, rejecting trailing auth arguments closes a real CLI gap. The changelog now has a Fixed: line. Approved CI completed with an iOS routing/test failure, so please resolve that before merge. :)

I inspected the failed iOS workflow. The failure is infrastructure-only: detect-ios-changes was cancelled while actions/checkout was fetching the repository, exactly five minutes after the fetch started, before any project code or routing logic ran. The downstream ios-tests aggregate then failed because it correctly treats a cancelled routing job as untrustworthy.

I attempted to rerun the failed jobs, but GitHub rejected the rerun because fork contributors do not have repository admin permission. Could a maintainer please rerun the failed jobs? No source change is indicated by the logs.
