PR-media UI tours were routed through the E2E auto fast path, which called simple_pool_picker before the UI-owned resolver. That picker has no test-filter or console-session semantics, so run 36958065338 landed on locked blacksmith-6vcpu-macos-26 despite online GUI minis.

This change keeps UI-filtered auto picks on the UI-aware resolver, selects glaeda-gui-std-xcode-26.6 when configured, and queues on that GUI label when its current capacity is zero instead of falling back to a root or Blacksmith console. Non-UI auto picks keep the shared simple picker.

Validation:

  • python3 -m unittest tests.test_ci_pr_runner_pool tests.test_ci_pr_media tests.test_pr_media (354 tests passed)
  • Regression coverage proves the UI auto path bypasses simple_pool_picker, prefers an online GUI label, and never chooses root/Blacksmith when GUI capacity is busy or temporarily zero.

The org-level GUI runners on cmux10s and cmux11s were checked read-only. Both retain the glaeda-gui-std-xcode-26.6 registration and current deployment stamp. Their listener gates temporarily withdrew instance 4 during CPU saturation or a held host.lock; at the latest ci-dash snapshot both GUI listeners were online. No restart, relabel, sudo, keychain, or reboot was performed.

Summary by cubic

Routes UI PR-media tours through the UI-aware E2E picker so they land on glaeda-gui-std-xcode-26.6 GUI minis instead of the shared simple_pool_picker, which ignores test-filter and console-session semantics.

  • Non-UI auto picks still use the simple picker.
  • When GUI capacity is zero or a console is locked, the tour queues on the GUI label rather than falling back to a root or Blacksmith console.
  • Adds regression tests covering the UI auto path, GUI label preference, and zero-capacity queuing.

Written for commit 4a3e3b8. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • UI-based test runs now prioritize pools configured for graphical sessions, even when those runners are busy or report no available capacity. This lets runs wait for a compatible runner rather than being routed to a pool that may not support interactive sessions.
    • When no owned pool has machines, runs use the first configured owned pool’s graphical-session label when available; otherwise, the original label is retained.
    • Non-UI runs continue to use the existing automatic pool selection behavior.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

UI E2E runs now bypass the shared simple-picker shortcut and use resolver routing. Owned-pool selection prefers the GUI label in the covered capacity and availability cases. Added tests cover the routing and label selection behavior.

Changes

UI E2E runner routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Route UI filters through resolve()
scripts/ci/e2e_runner_pool.py, tests/test_ci_pr_runner_pool.py
The auto simple-picker shortcut now applies only to non-UI filters. A test verifies that an auto media-tour request passes its filter to the resolver and resolves to the GUI label.
Select owned GUI labels
scripts/ci/e2e_runner_pool.py, tests/test_ci_pr_runner_pool.py
When no owned pool has machines, UI routing selects the first configured owned pool’s GUI label when available. When a pool has machines, it prefers the GUI label, then a root label with available slots, then the pool label. Tests cover GUI and mini capacity cases.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to d67fc

The UI auto path lacks a test that exercises the real resolver through the command entry point, leaving a bounded regression-detection gap. The evidence does not show a current routing failure.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d67fc

The intended GUI routing improves console-aware placement, but the new auto-selection path can still return non-GUI owned-runner labels. Dedicated console ownership is therefore not guaranteed across the complete routing flow. Runner access permissions and deployment behavior were not fully verified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The newly selected UI auto-resolution path does not enforce GUI-only placement. When auto_runner() selects an owned pool or root-runner label, ui_owned_runner() returns that persistent label unchanged. Such jobs can bypass the dedicated GUI listener's console-aware scheduling and inherit the documented contention and refusal behavior of non-GUI listeners. The underlying passthrough existed before this PR; the concern is its newly selected use by the changed UI auto entrypoint, not a demonstrated new privilege escalation.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is execution placement within the configured owned CI fleet and its shared console resources. No added IAM authority, network access, datastore access, or operating-system privilege was established. Actual runner-group membership and host credential boundaries remain outside the verified evidence.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The former simple-picker path explicitly excludes fork state from owned selection; the UI resolver path does not consume that fork identity. The inspected caller is dispatch-only and overrides labels to hosted runners outside the owning organization, so this difference alone does not establish a newly reachable fork attack. Authorization for other callers and dispatched revisions remains unresolved.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Routing is read-only and repeated selection creates no selector-owned reservation requiring cleanup. Failure containment nevertheless depends on the selected listener and external scheduling: GUI labels preserve console-aware waiting, whereas persistent non-GUI labels escape that conversion. Retry routing repeats the prior persistent label rather than repairing its console classification.
