Summary

Two follow-ups to the top-level lazy-export table _LAZY_EXPORTS (#8932), for the #8928 family PRs that move top-level names into it:

  • The PR API diff check stops reporting names moved into _LAZY_EXPORTS as removed.
  • The lazy-export test no longer fails when a module-valued row and attribute rows come from the same module.

An earlier revision of this PR also listed Cake backends whose csrc/** the release wheel would drop. The decision on #8928 (#8928 (comment)) keeps the csrc/** of every package under experimental/cake/ in the release wheels, so that change is removed and build_backend.py is unchanged.

ci: read _LAZY_EXPORTS in the API diff check

In scripts/check_pr_api_diff.py, exported_names() read only module-scope from ... import statements in flashinfer/__init__.py. So when a name moved into a _LAZY_EXPORTS row, the check reported it as public_export_removed (level error), even though flashinfer.<name> still resolves.

The new lazy_exported_names() reads rows as follows:

  • A row ("<module>", "<attribute>") counts like from <module> import <attribute> as <name>.
  • A module-valued row ("<package>.<module>", None) counts like from <package> import <module> as <name>.
  • Relative modules resolve against flashinfer.
  • Rows outside flashinfer are not read. Neither are **-spread rows, which are computed at runtime.

LazyExportTableTest in scripts/tests/test_check_pr_api_diff.py checks that rows resolve as described, that moving names from imports into rows produces no finding, and that dropping a row is reported as public_export_removed.

test: check that no row is bound before accessing any row

test_every_row_is_bound_on_first_access_only walked the rows in sorted order and accessed each one. Accessing an attribute row imports its module, and Python binds that submodule on flashinfer, so a module-valued row for the same module that sorts later was reported as "bound by import flashinfer" although import flashinfer does not bind it. The test now checks all rows first, then accesses them.

Tests

Run on a CPU compute node against the base (#8932 head 866fd69) and this branch, in the same environment. Test files: tests/cpu/test_build_backend_slim_wheel.py, scripts/tests/test_check_pr_api_diff.py, tests/cpu/test_flashinfer_lazy_exports.py, tests/experimental/test_containment.py.

At 8812443: the base gives 25 passed and 1 skipped; this branch gives 29 passed and 1 skipped. The extra tests include LazyExportTableTest (4 tests) and the reordered lazy-export binding test. pre-commit passed on the changed files.

…d from other modules

`flashinfer.__getattr__` served only the prims_ts names. Replace it with one
table, `_LAZY_EXPORTS: name -> (module, attribute)`, where an attribute of None
binds the module itself. The prims_ts names become rows of the table and behave
as before. Packages whose backend moves under `flashinfer.experimental` (issue
flashinfer-ai#8928) add their top-level names as rows, so `import flashinfer` does not import
the experimental tree. `tests/cpu/test_flashinfer_lazy_exports.py` checks that
every row is bound on first access only, that module rows bind modules, and that
unknown names still raise AttributeError.
…ck stable facades and keep their sources in every wheel

flashinfer-ai#8928 moves each Cake training backend to flashinfer/experimental/cake/<module>/
behind a stable top-level facade. State in the experimental README that these
facades are not experimental APIs, load their backend lazily (facade functions
or module __getattr__, top-level names through flashinfer._LAZY_EXPORTS), and
that their csrc/** ships in every wheel. The release-wheel exclusion already
matches only flashinfer/experimental/<pkg>/csrc/**; say so next to the rule and
pin it in test_entry_rules for experimental/cake/<pkg>/csrc/**.
…lease wheel

The release wheel (FLASHINFER_WHEEL_EXCLUDE_EXPERIMENTAL_SOURCES=1) drops
flashinfer/experimental/<package>/csrc/**. flashinfer-ai#8928 moves the Cake training
backends one level deeper, to flashinfer/experimental/cake/<module>/, where
the pattern does not match. Several of them were dropped at their old place;
moving them as is would add about 12 MB (compressed) to a wheel that is
93.7 MB today, over PyPI's 100 MB per-file cap.

_RELEASE_WHEEL_DROPPED_CAKE_BACKENDS lists the experimental/cake modules
whose csrc/** the flag also drops. It starts empty: each PR that moves a
backend that is dropped today adds its new module name as one row, so the
release wheel contents stay the same per package. Every other backend under
experimental/cake keeps its sources in every wheel.
exported_names() read only the module-scope `from ... import` statements
of flashinfer/__init__.py. A name moved into a row of the lazy-export
table (flashinfer-ai#8932) was therefore reported as public_export_removed although
`flashinfer.<name>` still resolves. Rows now count like the import they
replace: ("<module>", "<attribute>") like `from <module> import
<attribute> as <name>`, ("<package>.<module>", None) like
`from <package> import <module> as <name>`. Rows spread in with `**` are
computed at runtime and are not read, as before.
The test walked the rows in sorted order and accessed each one. An
attribute row from a module imports that module, and Python binds the
submodule on flashinfer, so a module-valued row for the same module that
sorts later was reported as "bound by import flashinfer" although
`import flashinfer` does not bind it. Check all rows first, then access.

LGTM

Decision on flashinfer-ai#8928 (issuecomment-6680034584): release wheels keep the
csrc/** of every package under flashinfer/experimental/cake/. Restore
build_backend.py, its slim-wheel test and the experimental README to main;
no family adds rows to a drop set.

CODEOWNERS gap attestation (not a code review).

A code owner of a changed path has approved this PR:

  • @yzh119 -> tests/cpu/test_flashinfer_lazy_exports.py

The following files match only the catch-all rule; this approval covers that technical gap under the one-approval policy. GitHub still requires each owned path's own owner.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Keep the bound eager mapping when a lazy row has the same name.

If an eager import binds api from .new and a lazy row maps api to .old, exported_names records .old. The comparison can then report a false move or miss an eager-import move. Account for eager bindings without discarding lazy fallbacks for conditional imports.

…es, backends under experimental/cake, no deterministic= keyword) (#8922)

## Summary

#8928 puts the mode (`det` or `nondet`) into every Cake training name
and removes the `deterministic=` keyword. This PR applies that scheme to
the SiLU-gated RMSNorm training family. The det module keeps the name
`flashinfer.cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_det_train`. The non-deterministic
module becomes `flashinfer.cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_nondet_train`. Both
backend packages move as whole directories under
`flashinfer/experimental/cake/`. Former names fail at import, and there
are no aliases. Kernels, library names, kernel names and `csrc` do not
change.

**Supersedes the earlier scope of this PR.** That scope kept a
non-deterministic entry without a mode word that accepted only
`deterministic=False`.

**Depends on:**

- #8932 (merged): adds the `_LAZY_EXPORTS` table. The top-level names of
this family are rows of that table.
- #8937 (merged; its commits are also in this branch's history, so the
squash adds nothing for its 3 files: `scripts/check_pr_api_diff.py`,
`scripts/tests/test_check_pr_api_diff.py` and
`tests/cpu/test_flashinfer_lazy_exports.py`).

### Functions, class and helpers

The former names were in three places:

- the former module
- the former nondet backend package (nondet only)
- the det facade and the det backend package, as aliases of the det
objects

This PR removes all of them. Each new name has the same spelling in the
facade and in its backend package.

`ARCHES` and `SUPPORTED_COMPUTE_CAPABILITIES` do not change in any of
the four namespaces. The `__all__` of each facade equals the `__all__`

Top-level names come only from 12 rows of `flashinfer._LAZY_EXPORTS`
(#8932). Each name is bound on first access. Each mode has six rows:

- the facade module

- the autograd class

Each autograd class resolves to the same object as the facade's class.
`flashinfer/__init__.py` no longer contains a SiLU import statement.

## Behavior

1. No entry point of either mode takes `deterministic=`. This includes
the functions and `Cake...Function.forward` / `.backward`. If you pass
it, you get a plain `TypeError`.
2. A call into one package never runs the other package. Neither mode
falls back to the other.
3. Under `torch.use_deterministic_algorithms(True)`:
   - det entries never alert. Every det launch sums in a fixed order.
   - The nondet forward never alerts.
- The nondet backward that computes the weight gradient raises PyTorch's
alert immediately before its order-varying launch. The `RuntimeError`
names the nondet entry and the det entry that does the same work:
`flashinfer.cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_det_train.cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_det_train_backward`,
or `...CakeRMSNormSiLUGateDetFunction` for the autograd backward.
- With `warn_only=True`, the call issues a `UserWarning`. Then it runs
the nondet kernel.
   - These calls do not alert:
- the one-cluster backward of up to 256 rows, which sums in a fixed
order
     - a call with no rows
     - a call with `compute_grad_weight=False`
- The check runs on the host. A CUDA Graph does the check at capture,
not at replay.
4. **Change from `main`:** before this PR, `deterministic=False` under
`use_deterministic_algorithms(True)` raised at the call, including the
forward. With `warn_only=True`, it warned and ran the det kernels. Code
that relied on that fallback must call the det entry.
5. Workspaces: the det backward workspace is FP32 and the nondet
backward workspace is FP64. If a backward call with rows gets the
workspace of the other mode, it raises a `ValueError` that names both
workspace functions. A call with no rows returns before it reads the
workspace, as on `main`.
6. Former names fail at import:
   - The three former modules / packages raise `ModuleNotFoundError`.
- The former names are attributes of neither `flashinfer` nor either
facade, so `from <module> import <former name>` raises `ImportError`.
- No alias, shim, compat module or `__getattr__` resolves a former name.
7. Each facade imports its backend package on first use
(`functools.cache` and a function-local import). The module
`__getattr__` / `__dir__` of a facade resolves exactly three
backend-owned names: its autograd class, `ARCHES` and
`SUPPORTED_COMPUTE_CAPABILITIES`. It raises `AttributeError` for any
other name. `import flashinfer` loads no module of this family under
`flashinfer.experimental`.
8. Both facades are stable top-level APIs. They have no
`@flashinfer_experimental_api` and they issue no `ExperimentalWarning`.

## Backend directory map

Each backend moves as a whole directory with `git mv` (`__init__.py`,
`build.json`, `cake_build.py`, `cake_jit.py`, `csrc/`). The files keep
their contents, except `__init__.py` and the `package` field of
`build.json`. The old path
`flashinfer/cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_train_backend/` held a different mode
in v0.7.3 than from v0.7.4rc1 on.

| Former directory | New directory |
| --- | --- |
| `flashinfer/cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_det_train_backend/` (first released
in v0.7.4rc1; 10 `csrc` files) |
`flashinfer/experimental/cake/cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_det_train/` |
| `flashinfer/cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_train_backend/` from v0.7.4rc1
(nondet; 32 `csrc` files) |
`flashinfer/experimental/cake/cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_nondet_train/` |
| `flashinfer/cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_train_backend/` in v0.7.3 (det
programs) |
`flashinfer/experimental/cake/cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_det_train/` |
| `flashinfer/cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_train.py` (facade) | deleted; new
facade `flashinfer/cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_nondet_train.py` |

Each backend directory is self-contained, as the standalone-build
constraint of #8928 requires:

- No module-level or relative import goes outside the directory. The
only `flashinfer` imports are function-level, on the JIT path of
`cake_build.py`.
- Every quoted `#include` in `csrc` resolves inside the directory.
- With `flashinfer` blocked, each directory imports and reads its
`build.json` as a vendored top-level package.

## Kernels and build identities

`cake_jit.py`, `cake_build.py` and all `csrc/**` files of both packages
have the same git blobs as on `main` before this PR. Git detects the
renames at 100 %: 10 det and 32 nondet `csrc` files. In `build.json`,
only the `package` field changes: it is now the dotted import path that
the manifest schema check requires. Libraries, sources, flags and
digests do not change. The JIT library names
(`cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_train_<hash>`,
`cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_det_train_<hash>`), the kernel symbols and the
numerics also do not change. The library stems are build identities, not
Python names.

## Other files

- `docs/api/norm.rst`: SiLU-gated sections only. "Mode and dispatch
rules" is rewritten for the mode in the name. The sections now have the
migration table and an autosummary of both facades. The RMSNorm sections
do not change.
- `pyproject.toml`: 2 package-data lines. Both moved packages keep
`csrc/**` and `build.json` in the wheel, also when
`FLASHINFER_WHEEL_EXCLUDE_EXPERIMENTAL_SOURCES=1` is set.
- `scripts/check_cake_build_manifests.py`: 2 package entries.
- `tests/test_helpers/cake_package.py`: 2 keys.

## Where former names remain

A whole-word grep (`git grep -w -F`) runs over `flashinfer/ tests/
benchmarks/ docs/ scripts/ .github/`. It covers every former name,
former dotted path and former file path. It must find no hit outside
these places:

-
`flashinfer/experimental/cake/cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_{det,nondet}_train/csrc/**`:
generated, byte-pinned kernel sources.
-
`flashinfer/experimental/cake/cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_{det,nondet}_train/{build.json,cake_jit.py,cake_build.py}`:
build identities, such as JIT library stems and the `cake_jit` MODULES /
KERNELS / record literals.
- `docs/api/norm.rst`, in the "Former name" list-table of the SiLU-gated
section: the migration table.
- `tests/norm/test_cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_det_train_names.py`: asserts
that the former names fail at import.

## Tests

Each cell shows passed/failed/skipped for
`tests/norm/test_cake_rmsnorm_silu_gate_<column>.py`. Skips are per-arch
gates: routes and stall probes that are not defined for that arch. The
commits after `0cbd010e` change only docs (`docs/api/norm.rst` and
docstrings) and the API-diff tooling of #8937.

| GPU | Head | det_train | det_train_api | det_train_names |
det_train_stall | nondet_train | nondet_train_api | nondet_train_stall |

CPU checks, all pass: pre-commit, manifest check, containment,
lazy-export test, slim wheel, API diff, wheel+sdist and the standalone
vendoring check at `0cbd010e`; pre-commit, API diff, docs and the
former-name grep again at `0ae636a1` and `df418601`.
