refactor(cake_gdn_det_kcp)!: remove the legacy no-det GDN KCP names - #8921
Removes the pre-rename names of the deterministic context-parallel GDN training route without aliases. Every public name of this route now carries det. Follow-up to the review on #8916.
Deleted: flashinfer.gdn_train, the flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_train compatibility package, and the no-det aliases in flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_det_train_kcp (chunk_gdn_kcp, chunk_gdn_fwd_kcp, chunk_gdn_bwd_kcp, KcpContext, KcpOptions, kcp_partition, build_kcp_context, gdn_kcp_*_bytes, ...). Use chunk_gdn_det_kcp, ContextDetKcp, partition_det_kcp, build_context_det_kcp, gdn_det_*_bytes_kcp, ...
The package exports only names that carry det. SCALE, LAST_CALL, the backend controls and the option helpers stay in their modules (cake_kcp, cake_options).
The legacy-alias test becomes absence tests. The removed modules do not import, no deterministic module binds a removed name, and no deterministic entry takes a deterministic keyword.
The README and the flashinfer.cake_gdn_det_train_kcp docstring state that the names were removed and add a "Mode and dispatch rules" section.
Merge order: this branch contains #8918, #8916 and #8912, and merges after them. Kernels, numerics and performance do not change.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Breaking Changes
Removed legacy GDN training import paths and compatibility aliases. Update imports to use the current deterministic API.
Deterministic entry points no longer accept a deterministic keyword. Backward operations reject saved data or workspaces created in non-deterministic mode.
The deterministic API exposes only det-named entries; non-deterministic training is available through a separate experimental package and requires deterministic=False.
Documentation
Clarified the distinction between deterministic and non-deterministic APIs and their usage requirements.
…rename aliases
The deterministic causal conv1d packages now expose only names that carry
"det". The compatibility names kept by flashinfer-ai#8055 are removed, with no alias left:
- modules flashinfer.cake_causal_conv1d_train and
flashinfer.cake_causal_conv1d_train_backend (and its submodules);
- top-level flashinfer.cake_causal_conv1d, CakeCausalConv1dFunction and
cake_causal_conv1d_train_{forward,backward}[_workspace_bytes];
- cake_causal_conv1d_kcp, cake_causal_conv1d_kcp_multi and
KcpRecomputeHandle of flashinfer.cake_causal_conv1d_det_train;
- the non-det names of the det backend package and of its kcp module.
Callers use the det names that already exist:
flashinfer.cake_causal_conv1d_det_train (cake_causal_conv1d_det, ...)
and flashinfer.cake_causal_conv1d_det_train_kcp (cake_causal_conv1d_det_kcp,
cake_causal_conv1d_det_multi_kcp, RecomputeHandleDetKcp). Kernels, programs
and numerics are unchanged. The KDA / GDN KCP tests, benchmarks, docs and
READMEs that called the convolution by an old name use the det names.
…(partition_det_kcp, build_context_det_kcp, ContextDetKcp)
The det conv KCP tests built their contexts through the KDA / GDN legacy
packages (cake_kda_train, cake_gdn_train) and pre-det names, which the KDA
and GDN det renames remove; the single-rank KCP test would then silently
fall back to its stand-in context. They now import the det plan modules.
…refuse other-mode saved sets
- The plan-parity test reads the KDA deterministic KCP plan through its
canonical module and names (cake_kda_det_train_kcp.cake_kcp_plan:
partition_det_kcp, build_context_det_kcp); the loader-bytes test reads
cake_kda_det_train.cake_build. Both are the objects the legacy names bind.
- The package hygiene checks refuse an import of any cake_kda* package.
- The benchmark's local arm runs the deterministic single-rank entry
(cake_gdn_det_train.chunk_gated_delta_rule_det) instead of a name that
never existed, so `--base local` no longer drops the arm silently.
- chunk_gdn_det_bwd_kcp refuses a saved set that is not a SavedDetKcp and a
caller-held workspace that is not a WorkspaceDetKcp with ValueError naming
the deterministic mode and the expected type, before any launch. The
saved sets of both modes have the same fields and version, so the field
checks alone accepted the other mode's saved set. Tests: a CPU stand-in of
the other mode's classes, and on GPU the non-deterministic package's own
forward.
Every public name of the deterministic GDN KCP route carries det; the
pre-rename names are removed outright, without an alias or a shim.
- Delete flashinfer/gdn_train.py and the flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_train
compatibility package (and its labeler entry).
- Delete the alias blocks of the package __init__, cake_kcp, cake_kcp_plan,
cake_bytes and cake_options (chunk_gdn_kcp, KcpContext, kcp_partition, ...).
- The package exports the names that carry det only. SCALE, LAST_CALL,
PROGRAMS, KCP_SAVED_VERSION, the backend controls and make_options /
validate_* stay in their modules (cake_kcp, cake_options).
- The legacy-alias test becomes absence tests: the legacy modules do not
import, no det module binds a legacy name, the package exports det names
only, and no det entry takes a deterministic keyword (TypeError).
- README and facade docstring: the names were removed; a "Mode and dispatch
rules" section states the deterministic-only contract.
BREAKING CHANGE: flashinfer.gdn_train, flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_train
and the no-det names (chunk_gdn_kcp, KcpContext, kcp_partition, ...) are gone;
use the det names (chunk_gdn_det_kcp, ContextDetKcp, partition_det_kcp, ...).
Package-level SCALE / LAST_CALL / set_backend / ... are read from cake_kcp or
cake_options.
…er names exist
The non-deterministic GDN tests, bench and READMEs no longer depend on the
former no-det names of the deterministic GDN packages (cake_gdn_det_train,
cake_gdn_det_train_kcp) or on the former KDA package path
(flashinfer.experimental.cake_kda_train), so they stay green before and
after those names are removed:
- test_cake_gdn_train_kcp_api.py: drop the test that the former names
(flashinfer.gdn_train, flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_train and the
module-level aliases of cake_gdn_det_train_kcp) are the det objects. Keep
one absence test over a single list of the former spellings, now also on
cake_backend, cake_build and cake_l2n, and a test that this package's
entries and types are not the det package's (det names only). The KDA
hygiene test refuses any import containing "cake_kda".
- test_cake_gdn_train.py: compare this package's entries with the det
package's det names instead of asserting its former aliases.
- test_cake_gdn_train_kcp.py, test_cake_gdn_train_kcp_build.py: the KDA
references use cake_kda_det_train_kcp.cake_kcp_plan (partition_det_kcp,
build_context_det_kcp) and cake_kda_det_train.cake_build.
- bench_cake_gdn_train_kcp.py: read LAST_CALL and graph_cache_clear of both
routes through the package's cake_kcp module.
- READMEs: the deterministic packages are named by their det names only.
- cake_gdn_train_kcp provenance docstrings (cake_jit.py, cake_kcp.py,
cake_kcp_plan.py) keep the historical KDA path at the cited commit and
add the file's current det KDA path (text only).
The former conv1d names used in the same files (bench, dist test, facade
docstring) are migrated by the conv1d owner's own change.
The deterministic GDN KCP package removes legacy names and import paths, narrows package exports, and documents deterministic-only entry points. Tests check the updated API surface and argument behavior. The linear-attention labeler no longer matches one legacy GDN directory pattern.
The facade and README describe deterministic-only behavior and the separate non-deterministic package. The package initializer narrows its exports, and compatibility aliases are removed from the deterministic KCP modules.
The legacy package shims and the top-level compatibility module are removed.
API and package-hygiene tests tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_det_train_kcp_api.py
Tests check that legacy paths and names are absent, package exports follow the deterministic naming rule, deterministic entry points reject a deterministic keyword, and imports do not reference KDA packages.
[cake] pplx kernel name refactor #8928: The issue calls for mode-specific training names, removal of old aliases, and no deterministic= keyword; this PR applies those changes to deterministic GDN KCP.
Possibly related PRs
flashinfer-ai/flashinfer#8022: Introduces the deterministic GDN KCP names and retains the aliases and import paths removed here.
flashinfer-ai/flashinfer#8916: Updates tests and the benchmark to stop using deterministic GDN package names and package-level controls that this PR removes.
flashinfer-ai/flashinfer#8920: Separates deterministic and non-deterministic GDN KCP routes, which this PR also documents.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 71da5
The change removes the legacy GDN names as intended. The remaining concerns are small: PRs from older branches may not get the linear attention label automatically, and some documentation and benchmark follow-ups from earlier reviews are still open. These should not block the merge.

Import the multi-convolution function in the example.
