fix(privacy)+gauntlet: narrow placeholder backstop (rc2-caught over-block), audit P0 fixes, rc3 prep - #391
Conversation
… lines (#389; rc2-gauntlet over-block) The v0.23.2-rc2 Phase-A gauntlet caught a real over-block regression from #384: _pem_fragment_near_private_key_placeholder blocked ANY 16+ base64 token within 160 chars of a private_key placeholder, so a redacted private key followed by a nearby git SHA (ubiquitous in deploy runbooks/configs) refused to embed — degrading recall on a common pattern. Fix: replace the proximity-TOKEN backstop with _pem_full_width_line_near_ placeholder — it blocks only a whole LINE that is pure base64 of full PEM wrap width (>=40 chars, non-English) within 3 lines of a private_key placeholder. That still catches the round-6 truncated-body-split leak (its orphaned body lines ARE full-width base64 lines) while a git SHA / hash embedded in a prose line does NOT match. Single sub-threshold fragments near a placeholder become the accepted #389 boundary (consistent with the other documented boundaries); a base64 hash on its OWN line beside a redacted key is a rarer accepted fail-closed over-block. Verified: 214 tests green; 'key + git SHA in prose' now DISPATCHES; the round-6 multi-line-split leak still BLOCKS; '2 keys + prose' dispatches; ruff clean.
…ndow/test/comment fixes (audit P0+P1) Adversarial audit (5-auditor workflow, 2-vote verified) caught a P0 in the previous commit BEFORE merge: _pem_full_width_line_near_placeholder iterated raw text.splitlines(), blind to serialized \n escapes — a JSON-serialized truncated key DISPATCHED its body while the plain spelling blocked (broken round-16 escape-spelling symmetry; every sibling backstop is serialization- aware). Fixed: iterate _pem_line_model segments like _has_orphan_full_width_ base64_run; verified fn-level and end-to-end (both spellings now BLOCK) with a plain-vs-escaped symmetry regression. Also from the audit: blank/near-empty segments no longer consume the 3-line adjacency window (P1 — blank lines shrank it far below the old 160-char budget; regression added); the markdown-prefixed single-fragment case moved into the documented #389 boundary test instead of silently deleted (P1); the residual-check and THREAT MODEL comments updated to describe the actual backstop set (P2 — they still described the removed token-proximity check). 219 tests green; 'key + git SHA in prose' still dispatches; ruff clean.
…eak outcomes (audit P0 #2, corrected design) The audit proved the planned try/except was a NO-OP: chunk backfill REPORTS a privacy refusal (status: error / stop_reason: privacy_refused / privacy_blocked count), it does not raise. Correct reconciliation, verified LIVE (planted_secret PASSED, known-leak False, real Voyage dispatches): - chunk step: accept 'status: complete' OR the SPECIFIC privacy_refused report shape (any other error still fails); the raw-secret outbound sweep still covers everything that did dispatch. The engine's chunk splitter can cut a dense planted fixture mid-key and the #383/#384 backstops then refuse that chunk — a loud refusal satisfies the battery's no-leak invariant. - per-fixture recall probes: a probe whose 48-char prefix is itself a truncated key shape gets its QUERY fail-closed-refused (#370 loud) — tolerated (<=3), nothing leaked; probes whose prefix is entirely secret-bearing redact to pure placeholders and are unretrievable BY DESIGN — skipped with the durable byte-identity check as their losslessness coverage. - RELEASE-READINESS-V1 Phase-A battery paragraph amended to document the accepted refusal shape (the spec and runner change together). 22 gauntlet tests green.

…review) + battery coverage Cross-model Opus review of #391 FAILED the over-block fix: the replacement backstop re-opened a >=40-char PEM-body leak class main blocks — a body line that is prefixed (log/label), glued to the placeholder, or sitting above it dispatched raw. 7 shapes verified first-hand (REPRO_391.py); all now block, both #389 controls still dispatch. ingest_protection.py: rewrite _pem_full_width_line_near_placeholder to a linear single pass — bidirectional 160-char window (matching main's proven window) + bounded deque ring buffer, keyed on a base64 BODY TOKEN (prefixed lines no longer slip a whole-segment fullmatch), with pure-hex _HEX_DIGEST_RE exclusion so git SHAs / hashes keep dispatching (#389). Same-segment glue + backward orphan both covered. 5 regressions added. Phase-A gauntlet (review F5/F6): the short-sentinel corpus could never exercise the >=40-char criterion and the outbound sweep only caught whole secrets. Add _assert_full_width_orphan_classes_blocked (runs the canonical orphan shapes through the real protect+validate path; proven to catch the pre-fix leak and pass post-fix), an independent partial-fragment (>=40-char) outbound sweep replacing the tautological validate re-run, honest probe_token-based recall skip (only genuinely secret-only fixtures skip; refusal bound anchored), and a chunk-coverage-collapse guard (selected>=1). LIVE battery PASS, known-leak False. rc3 notes: past-tense the superseded rc2 placeholder-adjacency rule; describe the final token-based bidirectional design; disclose the audit + cross-model review. 253 tests green; linearity gates hold. Refs #391 #389. Closes #390 (battery reconciliation).

Maintainer Analysis
Changed behavior:
- Replaces the 16-character placeholder-adjacency residual check with a 40-character, non-hex body-token check around private-key placeholders.
- Extends the Phase-A privacy battery with orphan-body shapes, partial-fragment sweeps, and probe-token recall checks.
- Updates release workflow expectations and notes from rc2 to rc3.
Affected invariants:
- Cloud-bound text must not expose private-key body fragments.
- Legitimate text outside the declared adjacency window must not be refused.
- Every clean planted fixture must remain retrievable raw while provider payloads remain protected.
- Release Phase B must review the full candidate diff.
Evidence:
- ingest_protection.py:1866 uses whitespace-only tokenization before a whole-token base64 match.
- ingest_protection.py:1896 scans the whole placeholder segment without measuring token distance.
- bench/instruments/release_gauntlet/phase_a_tool_matrix.py:506 permits clean-probe failures based on fixtures that were never probed.
- .github/release-notes/v0.23.2-rc3.md:6 names rc1 as the Phase-B endpoint.
Limitations:
- Review was limited to the supplied checkout diff; project tests, builds, scripts, shell commands, and arbitrary PR code were not executed.
No-finding rationale: No additional correctness, data-loss, migration, dependency, Unity, or CI defect was reported without a concrete failing path visible in the supplied diff.

…rator leak, #391 re-review P0) The cross-model re-review found the corrected backstop still leaked when a >=40-char PEM body is glued to a NON-whitespace separator (key_tail:<body>, -<body>, credential=<body>, PRIVATE_KEY=<body>): _qualifying_body_token split on whitespace and required the WHOLE token to fullmatch base64, so a mid-token :/=/-/> defeated it. main blocked all these via an embedded-run scan; this diff had swapped that for a whole-token fullmatch — a one-character gap (key_tail: <body> blocked, key_tail:<body> leaked). Verified first-hand: 15/16 separators leaked pre-fix, all block post-fix. Root fix (convergent — adopts main's proven detection): _qualifying_body_token scans for an EMBEDDED >=40-char base64 run (_PRIVATE_KEY_BODY_RUN_RE) inside each whitespace token, keeping the pure-hex exclusion so the #389 key+git-SHA control still dispatches. Separator-agnostic: closes the whole glued family at once, not one shape at a time. Gauntlet: add the glued (no-space) shapes to _assert_full_width_orphan_classes_ blocked (my earlier orphan shapes all used a space and missed this); tighten the recall probe-refusal bound to ==0 per its own contract (a clean non-secret token must never fail-closed) with skip_set proven non-empty (F6 P2). Verified: glued colon/dash/equals/gt BLOCK; original 7 + C1/C2 unchanged; 254 tests; linearity gates hold; LIVE planted-secret battery PASS (known-leak False). Over-block + linearity re-review lenses found nothing. Refs #391 #389.

Maintainer Analysis
Changed behavior:
- Replaces the 16-character placeholder-adjacency backstop with a 40-character, non-hex body-run detector using a bidirectional 160-character window.
- Expands Phase A with orphan-body shapes, partial-fragment leak checks, non-secret recall probes, and an accepted chunk privacy-refusal outcome.
- Moves release workflow expectations and release notes from rc2 to rc3.
Affected invariants:
- Private-key material must never survive in cloud embedding dispatches across supported serialization forms.
- Phase A must exercise a working supported path rather than pass vacuously on blanket refusal.
- Phase B evidence must cover the full release candidate diff.
Evidence:
- ingest_protection.py:1870 uses a fixed raw-character window with raw offsets from the serialized input.
- bench/instruments/release_gauntlet/phase_a_tool_matrix.py:439-459 accepts privacy refusal without requiring any chunk dispatch.
- .github/release-notes/v0.23.2-rc3.md:6 explicitly names the rc1 endpoint for an rc3 candidate.

…xclusion (#391 owner decision) Three successive line-model rewrites of the placeholder-proximity backstop each re-opened a leak shape main blocked — (1) splitlines escape-blindness, (2) whole-token fullmatch vs glued separators, (3) a placeholder glued to a following BEGIN marker being sliced out of the modeled segment — each caught by an independent cross-model review, the third verified first-hand (branch DISPATCH raw40, main BLOCK). Root cause: reconstructing adjacency through the line model keeps introducing blind spots the raw-text scan never had. Owner-decided resolution (2026-08-27): restore main's _pem_fragment_near_private_key_placeholder verbatim (raw-text finditer over placeholders + 16+ base64 runs in a 160-char window, immune to line classification, O(window) per placeholder) with ONE surgical delta — pure-hex runs (_HEX_DIGEST_RE: git SHAs / hash digests) are excluded, removing exactly the #389 over-block. Result = main's proven robustness minus the over-block. Semantics: 16-39-char fragments near a placeholder BLOCK fail-closed again (boundary narrows back to sub-16); key+git-SHA prose embeds. Tests updated to the restored semantics (test_single_fragment_near_placeholder_blocks_fail_closed) + new regressions for review-3's marker-glued shape; gauntlet orphan battery gains the marker-glued shape. Line-model variant + _PRIVATE_KEY_BODY_RUN_RE + deque removed. Verified: all 12 review-round leak shapes BLOCK (7+3+2), C1 key+SHA and C2 DISPATCH, 255 tests, linearity gates, LIVE planted-secret battery PASS (known-leak False, real Voyage). Refs #391 #389 #383.

1524-1526: Accept complete transform-layer redaction as fail-closed success.Line 1524 still fails when
protect_embedding_textremoves every fragment. That outcome prevents dispatch and is safer than validator refusal. This concern was already reported in the previous review.Confidence: 99%.

…review threads) Three bot threads correctly flagged the pipeline paragraph scoping Phase B to 'v0.23.1→rc1' — stale from the rc1 notes lineage; per RELEASE-READINESS-V1 Phase B is diff-scoped to previous-GA→rc and re-runs on every respin. Notes-only one-line delta over the confirm-review head 870b74b (noted in the acceptance receipt).
All findings dispositioned, threads terminally resolved, receipt-validated gate PASS at exact head e38518c. Dismissing the stale request-changes state to reflect that record.

Merge receipt. Merged 59bba76 via the gated path: update-branch → CI green at exact head → 17/17 review threads dispositioned+resolved → two-lane receipts (acceptance claude-fable-orchestrator 97 / adversarial opus-deep-reasoner 96 — true reviewer id per the #384 correction; codex is filter-blocked on PEM content) → dispatch-run watched by id → gate PASS → conditional merge. Review record: 5-auditor audit → adversarial review 1 (FAIL 68/7: orphan shapes) → review 2 (FAIL: glued separators) → review 3 (FAIL: placeholder-glued-to-BEGIN) → owner decision: restore main's raw-text backstop + pure-hex exclusion → confirm review PASS 96/0 (AST-faithful; 200 real keys → 0 excluded runs; 40k differential fuzz, 0 unexplained flips; gauntlet assertion mutation-tested). Non-blocking follow-ups on #389. rc3 status: v0.23.2-rc3 tagged @ 59bba76, prerelease published. Phase A PASS (30/30 matrix rows, 4/4 batteries incl. planted-secret on this tree — rc1 caught the leak, rc2 the over-block, rc3 proves both sealed). Phase B + C in flight. |
…364 characterization, issue→PR notation F1: #352 is the V1-M benchmark provider-accounting PR (already covered under #368's boundary rows); the exact-head governance pair is #349 + #358. F2: #364's clones are Hermes per-agent host clones — the failure mode was a silent fallback to the built-in lossy compressor under a concurrent WAL writer (#363); the credit line now states that accurately. F3: consistent issue→PR notation (#383→#384, #389→#391).
…nsform-change count, not a blocked counter Review thread on #412: a redaction changes provider-bound text without blocking, and the harness has no privacy_blocked field, so 'privacy_blocked == 0' cannot verify the #366 / #384-#391 boundaries as inert. The rows now require the transform-change count (documents where protect_embedding_text returned changed=True or raised, measured by a full prewarm pass = input-hash parity) as the discharge measurement.
Summary
Everything required to cut v0.23.2-rc3, through a 5-auditor work-so-far audit + THREE independent cross-model adversarial reviews:
Semantics of record
16–39-char fragments near a private_key placeholder fail-closed again (the accepted precision boundary narrows back to sub-16); the durable store is lossless throughout — only the cloud embedding copy is withheld. Deliberate re-encoding remains out of scope.
Verification
255 tests green (privacy+recall+gauntlet+release-workflow); linearity gates hold; 12/12 leak shapes block + 2/2 controls dispatch; live battery PASS. Review history: audit (5 Opus auditors) → review 1 (7 leaks) → review 2 (glued separators) → review 3 (marker-glue) → owner decision → confirm review on the restored design (in flight; receipt will carry reviewer_id=opus-deep-reasoner — codex is filter-blocked on PEM content, see the #384 correction).
Closes #390. Refs #389 #383.
