fix(privacy): redact truncated PEM body preceding an inline BEGIN (#383, gauntlet-caught P0) - #384
Conversation
…ng inline BEGIN (#383) P0 caught by the v0.23.2-rc1 Phase-A gauntlet: a truncated (unterminated) PRIVATE KEY block whose base64 body begins a physical line that also ends with a second inline BEGIN marker (the RFC 1421 encrypted-armor variant) leaked that body to the cloud embedding provider, and the fail-closed residual validator missed it too. Root cause: a line ending in a BEGIN marker was classified wholly as BEGIN with redact_start at that marker, orphaning the leading truncated-body token — the prior open block found no body run and the following block's redaction began at its own marker. Fix: _pem_line_model splits such a line into two virtual model entries (a STRICT_B64 for a base64-shaped leading token + the BEGIN marker) so the open block consumes and redacts its truncated tail while the next block still redacts from its own marker. Classify-normalized / redact-raw offsets; first-token gate keeps prose prefixes (password:, English tokens) untouched. Verified: full test_embedding_privacy.py + test_lcm_recall.py (194) green; the 10-fixture battery join leaks zero non-#365 secrets and the validator rejects cleanly; isolation matrix closed; linear perf (100k-char token 18ms). Closes #383.
📝 WalkthroughPriority Level: P0 Finding: Truncated PEM content could leak to the cloud embedding provider.
The fix covers private-key, encrypted-key, certificate, public-key, serialized-whitespace, log-prefix, escaped-solidus, underscore-label, and markdown/diff-prefix variants. It preserves precision boundaries for prose, SHAs near non-key placeholders, standalone certificates, and ambiguous short fragments. Regression tests cover redaction, validator rejection, aggregate fixture leakage, marker adjacency, adversarial residual cases, and linear-time performance. Reported verification includes 211 passing tests, successful live re-verification, and preserved linear performance. Confidence: 97% WalkthroughThe private-key scanner now handles generic markers, fragmented base64 bodies, serialized separators, and adjacent PEM content. Residual validation adds marker-independent fail-closed checks. Regression tests cover redaction precision and linear-time behavior. Confidence: 95%. ChangesPEM protection

…versarial-review finding)
Cross-model adversarial review (Opus) + my own probing found the first-token-only
fix incomplete: three residual bypasses, all with body tokens <16 chars, still
leaked — a multi-token run (only token 1 redacted), a lone short digit-bearing
token, and the escaped-newline serialized variant.
Generalized: _pem_line_model now splits off the ENTIRE leading run of
base64-body tokens before an inline BEGIN (strict OR short), requiring
digit/base64-symbol evidence somewhere in the run so all-caps doc headings
("IMPORTANT NOTICE") before a quoted BEGIN are not swept (round-21 precision
preserved). Classify-normalized / redact-raw offsets.
Verified: full test_embedding_privacy.py + test_lcm_recall.py green; all three
bypasses + the original single-token case now redact at both layers; doc-heading
precision preserved; linear perf (30k-token run 79ms). Regression cases added.

Maintainer Analysis
Changed behavior:
- Splits a leading Base64-like token run from a following inline PRIVATE KEY BEGIN marker so an already-open truncated block can redact that run.
- Requires the leading run to contain a digit or Base64 symbol before applying the split.
- Adds truncated-key, multi-token, short-token, serialized-newline, precision, and joined-gauntlet tests.
Affected invariants:
- Private-key material must never be dispatched to an embedding provider unredacted.
- Precision safeguards must not exclude syntactically valid PEM body content.
Evidence:
- ingest_protection.py:591 gates the virtual body-line split on digit or
+/=evidence. - The adjacent comment states that falling back to whole-line BEGIN classification orphans the preceding run.
- The new tests cover digit-bearing bodies but no all-letter Base64 body.
Limitations:
- Review was limited to the supplied checkout diff; no tests or executable code were run.
No-finding rationale: No additional correctness, data-loss, CI, or compatibility defect was validated from the supplied diff.

…ker (#383 finding #3) Cross-model adversarial review (Opus) found a third residual: a truncated PRIVATE KEY body glued to a following CERTIFICATE / PUBLIC KEY BEGIN on the same line still leaked — that line has no 'PRIVATE KEY-----', so the leading-run split never fired. Added a generic-marker (_PEM_ANY_MARKER_RE) branch: a leading base64-body run (digit-evidence gated) before ANY inline PEM marker is emitted as a forced STRICT_B64 entry so an open truncated block redacts it; the trailing marker is OTHER (opens nothing). Standalone certs/public keys stay intact (the split only redacts when consumed by an open truncated block). Verified: 202 tests green; the CERTIFICATE/PUBLIC KEY/multi-token-#3 variants redact at both layers; standalone cert preserved; doc-heading precision held; linear perf (30k-token run 11ms). Regression cases added.

Updated after cross-model adversarial review (Opus). Three residual leaks the initial fix missed — all confirmed by reproduction, all now closed:

Maintainer Analysis
Changed behavior:
- Splits a leading base64-like run from an inline private-key BEGIN marker so a preceding truncated block can redact it.
- Adds analogous splitting before certificate, public-key, and other matched PEM markers.
- Adds privacy regressions and a joined release-gauntlet fixture.
Affected invariants:
- Private-key material must never reach embedding dispatch.
- Redaction must preserve unrelated prose and standalone public certificate content.
Evidence:
- ingest_protection.py:315 restricts generic marker labels to letters, digits, and spaces.
- ingest_protection.py:635-639 requires digit or base64-symbol evidence before splitting.
- tests/test_embedding_privacy.py defines an existing alphabet-only
_KEY_BODY, while all new inline-tail fixtures contain digits. - New non-private-marker tests cover CERTIFICATE and PUBLIC KEY only, not hyphenated labels.
Limitations:
- Only the supplied checkout diff was reviewed; no commands or tests were run.
No-finding rationale: No additional defect was validated from the supplied diff without executing project code.

…-run scanner (#383 round 5) The final adversarial review found 5 more marker-adjacency variants leaking through BOTH layers, proving the strategic point: the transform heuristic is an unbounded frontier, and the fail-closed second layer must catch residuals independently of markers (as the module's own design comment promises). Validator backstops (the real fix): - _pem_marker_with_inline_body: a surviving private-key marker sharing a line with a non-English 16+ base64 run blocks dispatch (catches the single-line BEGIN+body+marker composition; prose marker mentions still pass). - _pem_fragment_near_private_key_placeholder: any 16+ base64-charset token within 160 chars of a private_key placeholder blocks dispatch (catches interrupted/resumed runs, no-digit tails, markdown-prefixed fragments — even word-shaped ones: beside a redacted KEY, a loud block beats a leak). Scoped to private_key placeholders; SHAs near other placeholders pass. Transform fixes: - _PEM_ANY_MARKER_RE accepts hyphenated armor labels (CERTIFICATE-REQUEST). - _pem_leading_body_run: shared hand-rolled scanner for both split branches, treating serialized escaped tabs (backslash-run + t, any depth) as token separators with run-jumps (no backslash-run regex — the ReDoS lesson). Outcome per variant: realistic (>=16-char) bodies now redact or block at one of the two layers; sub-16 fragments remain the documented short-token boundary. 209 tests green; battery join still transforms cleanly (not over-blocked); linear perf (100k backslash run 24ms, 30k tokens 11ms, 2000 placeholders 15ms).
|
Round 5 (156beb9) — architectural response to the round-4 findings. The reviewer's 5 variants proved the real point: the transform heuristic is an unbounded frontier, so the fail-closed second layer must catch residuals independently of markers. Round 5 makes the validator marker-independent (two backstops: surviving private-key marker + non-English 16+ base64 run on one line ⇒ block; any 16+ base64-charset token within 160 chars of a private_key placeholder ⇒ block) plus transform fixes (hyphenated armor labels, escaped-tab-aware shared leading-run scanner). Class-level guarantee now regression-tested: every variant either redacts or BLOCKS — a raw dispatch is the only failure mode. Realistic (≥16-char) bodies from all 5 round-4 findings now redact or block; sub-16 fragments remain the documented short-token boundary. Battery join still dispatches cleanly (no over-blocking); prose marker mentions and SHAs near non-key placeholders pass; linear perf incl. 100k backslash runs. 209 tests green. This also substantially delivers #383 finding #4 (validator independence) ahead of schedule. Round-5 confirmation review in flight — the merge receipt. |

Maintainer Analysis
Changed behavior:
- Splits leading base64-like runs from following private-key or other PEM markers so truncated key tails can be redacted.
- Adds validator backstops for inline private-key markers and base64-like fragments near private-key placeholders.
- Adds regressions for joined gauntlet fixtures, serialized separators, alternate armor markers, and several marker-adjacency forms.
Affected invariants:
- Private-key material must never be dispatched raw after best-effort transformation.
- Fail-closed validation must not share the transform's marker-recognition or adjacency blind spots.
Evidence:
- ingest_protection.py:320 restricts generic armor labels to
[A-Z0-9 -]. - ingest_protection.py:1788 limits placeholder-adjacent fragment inspection to 160 characters.
- The added adjacency tests cover prefixed/interrupted fragments but do not cross the 160-character boundary or use a marker label outside the regex alphabet.
Limitations:
- Review was limited to the supplied checkout diff; no shell commands, project tests, builds, or arbitrary PR code were executed.
- Surrounding implementation details not present in the diff were not independently inspected.
No-finding rationale: No additional correctness, data-loss, CI, Unity, or test defects were validated directly from the supplied diff.

This PR fixes a Phase-B-caught P1, so per the release gate the candidate must advance rather than keep validating rc1. Adds .github/release-notes/v0.23.2-rc2.md (rc1 notes + the #383/#384 marker-independent-validator hardening paragraph) and points RC_TAG at 0.23.2-rc2 so the notes-coverage test validates the new rc. Identity stays the stable 0.23.2 (unchanged rc1→rc2→GA); only the notes file and git tag carry the rc number.
…-body-split leak (#383 round 6) Independent adversarial review (Opus) found a residual through both layers: a TRUNCATED private key whose body is split by one long non-base64 line leaves full-width base64 body lines with no surviving marker AND no placeholder in range — invisible to every marker/placeholder-keyed check. Confirmed: 3 verbatim 64-char body lines dispatched. Fix (the reviewer's spec): _has_orphan_full_width_base64_run flags >=2 contiguous full-width (>=40-char) strict base64 body lines not inside a placeholder — the private-key body signature, transform- and marker-independent; ordinary prose/config never produces it, and a genuine multi-line base64 blob blocking on the cloud path is acceptable fail-closed (durable store untouched). Wired as a fifth private_key residual check. Backstop B (_pem_fragment_near_private_key_placeholder): fixed the window so a run STARTING inside it isn't truncated below 16 (bounded endpos = window+16, NOT scan-to-EOF — the latter is O(placeholders*text), which the 20000-marker linearity test caught). Kept it PRIVATE_KEY-placeholder-specific: a 16+ base64 token beside a non-key placeholder (a git SHA next to a redacted api_key) is ambiguous and must not over-block — multi-line key bodies are covered by the orphan-run check; a lone token beside a non-key placeholder is the accepted precision boundary. Verified: 211 tests green; the round-6 headline leak blocks at both layers; git SHA near api_key still dispatches; linearity preserved (20000 markers <3s).

Round 6 (c3da2b8) — independent Opus review found a real residual through both layers, now closed. The round-5 review constructed a truncated PRIVATE KEY whose body is split by one long non-base64 line: the post-break full-width base64 body lines had no surviving marker and no placeholder in range, so every marker/placeholder-keyed check missed them (3 verbatim 64-char lines dispatched). Fix per the reviewer's spec: a marker-INDEPENDENT orphan-run backstop ( |

…(round-6 review honesty) Round-6 independent review confirmed the class closed for realistic PEM key material but honestly flagged that the module threat-model comment over-claimed: it implied the validator blocks 'structures the redactor cannot parse', while a deliberately de-contiguated body (a >=159-char non-base64 line between EVERY body line, so no two full-width lines are adjacent and none is within a placeholder window) is NOT blocked. That shape is out-of-declared-scope adversarial re-encoding (the author owns the key), not accidental leakage. Tightened the comment to say so explicitly and to stop claiming universal unparseable-structure blocking. No behavior change.

Changed behavior:
- Leading base64 body tokens before an inline private-key or other PEM marker are split into virtual line-model entries so truncated key material can be redacted.
- Private-key residual validation now checks marker-adjacent runs, tokens near private-key placeholders, and contiguous full-width markerless base64 lines.
- New tests cover truncated PEM compositions, generic armor markers, residual-validator variants, the release privacy fixture set, and a wall-clock linearity check.
Affected invariants:
- Private-key material must never reach embedding dispatch.
- Sanitized ordinary text should remain dispatchable when no secret fragment survives.
- Privacy scanning should remain bounded for documents containing many placeholders.
Evidence:
- ingest_protection.py:1813 unconditionally accepts any 16+

…d 7)
CodeRabbit + ground-truth verification found 4 more real single-fragment leaks;
3 are cheap in-scope fixes with no over-block cost:
- escaped-solidus (chwFQ): the marker-independent backstops scanned raw text, so
\/ split a base64 run into sub-16 chunks and hid it — now also run them on the
solidi-normalized text (detection-only; placeholders/markers carry no solidi).
- underscore marker label (ch9ZL): _PEM_ANY_MARKER_RE now accepts '_' so a body
tail before -----BEGIN FOO_BAR----- splits (permissive detection = fail-closed).
- markdown/diff prefix (ckrYc): strip a leading '> '/'+ '/'- ' before the
generic-marker leading-body scan so a prefixed tail before a non-private marker
still redacts (offset the emitted span past the prefix).
The 4th (chSC7: a no-digit base64 chunk before a marker) is the irreducible
digit-evidence precision boundary — a no-digit base64 fragment is
indistinguishable from a long word ('internationalization'), so catching it
over-blocks legitimate prose; accepted + tracked (follow-up issue).
Verified: 211 tests green; all 3 fixed variants redact/block; round-5/6 leaks
still block; prose / git-SHA-near-api_key / normal markdown-quote still dispatch;
linear perf preserved.

- Adds residual-dispatch backstops for inline marker/body combinations, fragments near private-key placeholders, and contiguous full-width markerless base64 lines.
- Adds regression, precision, gauntlet, and performance coverage for truncated and serialized PEM compositions.
Affected invariants:
- Private-key material must not reach embedding dispatch when parsing or redaction leaves recognizable residual structure.

…eak outcomes (audit P0 #2, corrected design) The audit proved the planned try/except was a NO-OP: chunk backfill REPORTS a privacy refusal (status: error / stop_reason: privacy_refused / privacy_blocked count), it does not raise. Correct reconciliation, verified LIVE (planted_secret PASSED, known-leak False, real Voyage dispatches): - chunk step: accept 'status: complete' OR the SPECIFIC privacy_refused report shape (any other error still fails); the raw-secret outbound sweep still covers everything that did dispatch. The engine's chunk splitter can cut a dense planted fixture mid-key and the #383/#384 backstops then refuse that chunk — a loud refusal satisfies the battery's no-leak invariant. - per-fixture recall probes: a probe whose 48-char prefix is itself a truncated key shape gets its QUERY fail-closed-refused (#370 loud) — tolerated (<=3), nothing leaked; probes whose prefix is entirely secret-bearing redact to pure placeholders and are unretrievable BY DESIGN — skipped with the durable byte-identity check as their losslessness coverage. - RELEASE-READINESS-V1 Phase-A battery paragraph amended to document the accepted refusal shape (the spec and runner change together). 22 gauntlet tests green.

…364 characterization, issue→PR notation F1: #352 is the V1-M benchmark provider-accounting PR (already covered under #368's boundary rows); the exact-head governance pair is #349 + #358. F2: #364's clones are Hermes per-agent host clones — the failure mode was a silent fallback to the built-in lossy compressor under a concurrent WAL writer (#363); the credit line now states that accurately. F3: consistent issue→PR notation (#383→#384, #389→#391).
…nsform-change count, not a blocked counter Review thread on #412: a redaction changes provider-bound text without blocking, and the harness has no privacy_blocked field, so 'privacy_blocked == 0' cannot verify the #366 / #384-#391 boundaries as inert. The rows now require the transform-change count (documents where protect_embedding_text returned changed=True or raised, measured by a full prewarm pass = input-hash parity) as the discharge measurement.
…rrences, 5 questions; manifest classes 43 of 90 units) — ledger #384 cell says 'at least one of the 90', F62 §8a carries the corpus-not-PEM-free fact with its evidence pointer (r8 confirm finding)
Summary
Closes the P0 the v0.23.2-rc1 Phase-A gauntlet caught: a truncated PRIVATE KEY body leaked to the cloud embedding provider (and past the fail-closed validator) when it began a physical line that also ended with a second inline BEGIN marker.
Change class
Product security fix (ingest_protection.py, the #366 redaction scanner) + regression tests. Blocks v0.23.2 GA; enables the rc2 respin.
Root cause & fix
A line ending in a BEGIN marker was classified wholly as BEGIN with redact_start at the marker, orphaning a base64-shaped leading token that was the prior open (truncated) block's body tail.
_pem_line_modelnow splits such a line into two virtual entries (STRICT_B64 leading token + BEGIN marker), so the open block consumes and redacts its truncated tail while the next block still redacts from its own marker. Classify-normalized / redact-raw offsets; a first-token gate preserves prose prefixes (password:, English tokens).Verification
Cross-model
Codex-authored fix; reviewed by the orchestrator against the #366 declared threat model; independent adversarial pass in flight.
