fix(compression): keep the dispatched engine in analytics for multi-engine and skip rows - #19056
Follow-up to #19012, from CodeRabbit's two comments there. #19012 made compression analytics record the configured lite (reportedMode) as both the mode and the engine, whenever lite runs as a one-step stacked pipeline. Two cases got the engine wrong:
Multi-engine runs. When a combo takes over the lite plan, the pipeline runs several engines, for example session-dedup and lite. The summary row still said engine = "lite". The engine label now uses reportedMode only when at most one step ran (stats.engineBreakdown). Otherwise it keeps the dispatched engine.
Skip rows. A no_savings row has no per-engine breakdown, and the legacy per-engine totals count it under the engine it names. It now keeps the dispatched engine, and its mode still reports lite.
mode keeps the configured value in every case, so the integration test's byMode.lite still holds.
Validation
tests/unit/chatcore-compression-analytics-write.test.ts gains two tests: a multi-engine run keeps engine = "stacked" with mode = "lite", and a skip row does the same. With lossy-request-policy and the flat-rate writer test: 24/24.
Compression analytics now retain the dispatched engine for multi-engine combinations and skipped operations, while still recording the configured mode separately.
Compression analytics now distinguish reported mode labels from dispatched engine labels. Saving rows use the reported mode when the engine breakdown has at most one step. Multi-engine saving rows and skip rows retain the dispatched engine, with a mode fallback.

Saving rows use reportedMode as the engine label when the breakdown has at most one step. Multi-engine saving rows and skip rows use stats.engine, falling back to opts.mode. Tests cover the multi-engine and skip cases. The changelog describes the label rules.
cheaper-inference/OmniRoute#19012: Adds reportedMode to the compression plan and passes it to analytics writers; this PR changes how analytics writers use that value.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 5ba52
No-savings lite runs can be omitted from per-engine analytics, skewing averages. The impact is bounded but merits follow-up.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 5ba52
This changes how compression activity is categorized in reports, without changing permissions, compression execution, or request ownership. No introduced or worsened security risk was identified in the reviewed change.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated effect is changed categorization of compression records and aggregate reports. The inspected consumers do not use the changed engine label to grant privileges, select credentials, route requests, or determine billing entitlement.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The public-entrypoint signal identifies an exported persistence helper, not a newly exposed network handler. Its callers and export surface are unchanged, and the inspected engine-reporting endpoint retains management authentication.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Receipt attachment remains correlated by request_id after awaiting the pending write, and retention cleanup remains timestamp-based. Engine relabeling therefore does not alter these ownership or lifecycle selectors, including their existing behavior after duplicate or partial writes.

Explanation
The title follows the Conventional Commits format with the type "fix" and the scope "compression". It states the main change: analytics keep the dispatched engine for multi-engine and skip rows. The changeset matches this, since the write logic in compressionAnalyticsWrite.ts uses stats.engine for these cases and the tests cover both.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the core content: the problem from #19012, the two affected cases (multi-engine runs and skip rows), the rule that mode keeps the configured value, and the validation steps with test results. It does not follow the repository template. The Target Branch checklist, the Related Issues section with a Closes or Related reference, the Tests Added Or Updated list, the Coverage Notes, and the Reviewer Notes are missing or incomplete. The author used a base-red reference (#18791) instead of a Related Issues entry. The description therefore meets most of the intent but omits several required template sections.
Resolution
Consider adding the following to match the template: a Related Issues entry (for example, Related to #19012), a Target Branch checklist confirmation, the change type selected under Validation, a Tests Added Or Updated list naming tests/unit/chatcore-compression-analytics-write.test.ts and tests/integration/chatcore-compression-integration.test.ts, a Coverage Notes section for open-sse/ changes, and a Reviewer Notes section.

Preserve per-engine counts for lite skip rows.
A no-savings lite wrapper now records stacked and writes no breakdown. getPerEngineAnalytics therefore stops counting that run under lite, which also inflates its average savings. Preserve the dispatched row label, but record or otherwise retain the actual engine attribution for skip rows. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
