fix(compression): analytics reports lite again when lite runs as a scoped stacked step - #19012
Fixes the last red in #18791. The scheduled Release-Green run 41829575406 (head dbc0f4ed) failed integration shard 2 on chatCore integration: modular compression records analytics row best-effort:
TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'count') // summary.byMode.lite
It reproduces on the tip 3/3, so it is not flaky.
Cause.#18818 made the lossy-request policy run a configured lite plan as a one-step stacked pipeline (LOSSLESS_LITE_STEP), so it can carry a scoped Lite config. Dispatch is right, but compression analytics reads plan.mode. It now recorded stacked as both the mode and the engine of the row, so the dashboard's mode and engine breakdowns stopped showing lite for anyone who configured it:
#18818 updated the unit tests for the new plan shape, but not this integration test, which checks what analytics reports.
Fix. Analytics only; dispatch is unchanged.
DerivedPlan gains an optional reportedMode. downgradeUnrequestedLossy sets reportedMode: "lite" only when it wraps lite as a stacked step.
chatCore passes reportedMode, only while the dispatched mode is still stacked, to writeCompressionAnalytics and writeCompressionSkip. The row records it as mode and engine.
Validation
tests/integration/chatcore-compression-integration.test.ts: 16/16. The failing test passes unchanged.
New and updated unit tests:
lossy-request-policy: the lite wrapper sets reportedMode, and a plain stacked plan does not.
chatcore-compression-analytics-write: a wrapped plan records lite as mode and engine, and without reportedMode the dispatched values are kept.
With the related compression tests: 33/33.
All of tests/unit/compression plus the chatcore compression files:
2125 tests pass.
3 timing and heap tests fail on this loaded host (load average around 30): the rtk-discover-redos < 1000 ms check, the splitCompositeCommand bound and the #7849 512 MiB heap check. None of them touches the changed code.
Run alone, only the ReDoS timing check still fails, at 1.5 s against a 1 s limit.
An interrupted check reported no result, so it says nothing about this pull request.
Look at the check run to find out why it stopped. A reclaimed runner or a cancelled workflow run are the usual causes.
You can then requeue the pull request, without updating it, by posting a @mergifyio queue comment.
Compression analytics now report lite as the mode and engine when Lite runs through a stacked pipeline, instead of reporting stacked.
Dispatch behavior is unchanged.
Compression plans can now retain a configured mode separately from their dispatch mode. Analytics rows and no-savings skip records use that reported mode when it is present. The lite downgrade still dispatches as a stacked plan.

Record the configured mode open-sse/services/compression/deriveDefaultPlan.ts, open-sse/services/compression/lossyRequestPolicy.ts, tests/unit/compression/lossy-request-policy.test.ts, changelog.d/fixes/19012-compression-analytics-reports-lite.md
DerivedPlan supports an optional reportedMode. The default policy sets it to lite when it wraps an unrequested lite plan in a stacked pipeline. Tests cover the wrapped plan and safe stacked plans. The changelog describes the analytics reporting change and unchanged dispatch.
Write the reported mode open-sse/handlers/chatCore.ts, open-sse/handlers/chatCore/compressionAnalyticsWrite.ts, tests/unit/chatcore-compression-analytics-write.test.ts
Chat handling passes reportedMode to analytics writes and no-savings skip records when the resolved mode is stacked. Both writers use it for mode and engine when present. Tests cover the lite override and the stacked fallback.
Some compression dashboard engine labels and per-engine averages can be inaccurate for affected runs. The impact is limited to analytics, but both localized corrections should be addressed before relying on these metrics.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 7430d
The change affects compression reporting labels, not compression execution or access controls. The reviewed paths preserve request identity, database protections, and best-effort failure handling. No material security risk was identified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The introduced effect is bounded to attribution of affected requests in compression analytics. The inspected flow does not add credential access, a new tenant or principal scope, or additional compression authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The new producer assigns the literal lite rather than copying arbitrary request text. Analytics persistence binds mode and engine as SQL values, and the inspected summary endpoint invokes management authorization before reading analytics. These controls are unchanged by the PR.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title uses the required Conventional Commits form with type fix and scope compression. It states the main change: analytics again report lite when lite runs as a scoped stacked step. The title matches the changeset, which adds reportedMode to analytics writes and the lossy policy.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template in substance. It has a Summary that explains the cause and fix, and it lists validation results with test counts. It names the changed test files and the failing integration test. It does not follow every template heading: it has no Related Issues section with a closing reference, the Target Branch checklist is missing, and the Coverage Notes and Reviewer Notes sections are absent. The Summary and Validation sections carry the key context, so the check passes.

Keep the dispatched engine in analytics when the default combo replaces a lite plan.
A configured lite plan is wrapped with reportedMode: "lite". When the seeded default combo runs instead, the dispatched pipeline can contain session-dedup and lite. The analytics writer then sets engine to lite in the summary row, so the row does not name the engine that ran. The per-engine breakdown still lists each step.
Keep the configured mode in mode. Set engine from the dispatched pipeline. Use the reportedMode label for engine only when the single lite wrapper step runs. Apply the same rule to the skip record path. The second engine fallback in compressionAnalyticsWrite.ts (around lines 74 and 118) needs this change. Add a test for the default-combo case.

Exclude skip rows from the legacy per-engine totals.
For a lite run wrapped as a stacked step, the no_savings row now records engine = "lite". It has no per-engine breakdown. The legacy branch of getPerEngineAnalytics() in src/lib/db/compressionAnalytics.ts does not filter on skip_reason. It therefore counts the row as a lite run and adds its tokens to the savings average, which lowers the reported average.
