What?

nixl::xfer.complete is now recorded once per completed post, under the request's trace context, by whichever call first sees the transfer complete: postXferReq when the backend completes it inside postXfer, and otherwise getXferStatus, a repost of the same request, or releaseXferReq. Until now only getXferStatus recorded it.

Why?

A transfer completed at once, or first seen complete by a repost or a release, had no completion on the timeline: in the tracing_nsys capture, 17 of 50 UCX posts had none (NIX-2261, under NIX-1537).

How?

Details
  • Each mark follows the postXfer or checkXfer call that returns NIXL_SUCCESS, under the request's correlation scope: postXferReq already opens one, and releaseXferReq now opens one as getXferStatus does. Each check runs only on a request still in progress, so no completion is marked twice. A transfer that releaseXferReq cancels is not marked, although its status ends as NIXL_SUCCESS.
  • Telemetry is unchanged and still records no finish when a repost or a release sees the completion first: postXferReq restarts the request's timer before its repost check, so that needs its own change.
  • The test recorder's mark() now writes a line, as a zero-length span.
  • recorderTracingAgentFixture in unit/agent/agent.cpp covers a post completed at once, one completed later and seen by the status check, a repost or a release, a request posted twice, and a failed post.
  • docs/tracing.md names the calls that emit the marker.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added tracing events for completed transfers across immediate completion, status checks, reposts, and release operations.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Mark a completed transfer before reposting it.

If checkXfer returns NIXL_SUCCESS here, the previous in-progress post has completed. postXferReq can then start another post without emitting a completion mark for the previous one. A later getXferStatus cannot recover that mark because the request status has been replaced. Emit the mark under the request’s trace context when this check first observes success, and cover an in-progress post followed directly by a repost.

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff comment at src/core/nixl_agent.cpp:1184-1185 (mark a completed transfer before reposting it): deliberate. The repost check and releaseXferReq stay unmarked because telemetry records no finish there either, so the mark follows telemetry's completion accounting exactly. Noted in the description.

@e-eygin Thanks for clarifying. I verified that the repost check and releaseXferReq record neither a completion mark nor a telemetry finish update. Leaving both paths unmarked matches the intended accounting contract. I withdraw the outside-diff comment.

Learning: In ai-dynamo/nixl, completion tracing in src/core/nixl_agent.cpp intentionally follows telemetry completion accounting. nixlAgent::postXferReq emits nixl::xfer.complete when postXfer returns NIXL_SUCCESS. nixlAgent::getXferStatus emits it when an in-progress request first returns NIXL_SUCCESS. Completion detected by the repost check or nixlAgent::releaseXferReq intentionally remains unmarked because those paths do not record a telemetry finish update. Do not recommend adding completion marks to those paths independently of telemetry accounting.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-gpu-vr · commit 032f650d

TL;DR: The build didn't fail on code — the "Allocate Environment" stage couldn't get a Slurm allocation on the vrnvl72 partition and died after the full --immediate=3600 window with salloc: error: Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out. Re-run the job; if it keeps failing, the four --excluded VR nodes plus partition contention are leaving too little capacity to satisfy --gres=gpu:2 --mem=128G --mincpus=24.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage "Allocate Environment" (node 164) failed after ~60 min; salloc for job name nixl-ci-gpu-vr-433 (Slurm allocation 2691582) never got resources and returned "Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out". The parent Parallel stage then failed the build.

Root cause: Resource starvation / queueing in the vrnvl72 Slurm partition, not a defect in commit 032f650. Evidence from the stage log:

  • 16:06:32 — ssh + salloc -N 1 -p vrnvl72 --job-name=nixl-ci-gpu-vr-433 --immediate=3600 --time=02:00:00 --no-shell --account=rubin --gres=gpu:2 --mem=128G --mincpus=24 --exclude=vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp137,...-comp139,...-comp141,vr-nvl72-ts2b-l10-comp102
  • 17:06:40 — salloc: Pending job allocation 2691582 / job 2691582 queued and waiting for resources / salloc: error: Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out

The ~60-minute gap between those two lines is not an application hang: it matches --immediate=3600 exactly. salloc was deliberately blocking for its full 1-hour grace window waiting for a matching node, and Slurm then aborted it. Everything before this stage succeeded — "Compiling NIXL Docker Image" (node 149) completed in ~13.6 min and the test image nixl-ci-gpu-vr-test:433 was built and pushed cleanly, so build/compile of the PR is healthy. The only failure signal in the whole log is the allocation.

Contributing factor: four VR nodes are hard-excluded from this partition (added by PR #2339), which narrows the pool of candidates that can satisfy the gpu:2 / 128G / 24 CPU request.

Implicated commit: none for the code under test. The allocation parameters come from [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] (NirWolfer, "CI: request 2 GPUs instead of a whole node for nixl-ci-gpu-vr", #2352) and the exclude list from PR #2339.

File: Jenkins pipeline "Allocate Environment" stage (slurm.allocation call with partition:vrnvl72, immediateTimeout:3600, extraArgs exclude list) — stage ID 164 of nixl-ci-gpu-vr #433.

Suggested fix:

  1. Retry the build — this is a transient capacity failure and nothing in PR tracing: mark xfer.complete when postXferReq completes the transfer #2462 is implicated.
  2. If it recurs, have an admin check allocation 2691582's pend reason on dlcluster.nvidia.com (sacct -j 2691582 -o JobID,State,Reason,NodeList) to confirm it was queued on resources rather than blocked by account/QOS on --account=rubin.
  3. Re-evaluate the --exclude list from PR CI: exclude misconfigured Vera Rubin nodes from nixl-ci-gpu-vr #2339: if vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp{137,139,141} and vr-nvl72-ts2b-l10-comp102 have since been repaired, dropping them restores four candidate nodes and makes the 1-hour window far more likely to be satisfiable.
  4. Make the pipeline distinguish allocation failure from test failure — wrap slurm.allocation in a bounded retry(2) and report it as UNSTABLE/infra rather than a red build, so PR authors aren't misled into debugging their change.

Related: #2352 (switched this job to --gres=gpu:2 instead of a whole node), #2339 (added the VR node exclude list)

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-test-sanitizers · commit 00cf0759

TL;DR: The TSAN sanitizer stage failed on a single gtest case, MDManagerEtcdFixture.InvalidateLocalRemovesRemote, which is an etcd-watcher race unrelated to this PR's tracing changes; the fix is the watch-revision change already open as PR #2413 (or skip/mark this etcd case as flaky under sanitizers meanwhile).

Full analysis

Summary: nixl-ci-test-sanitizers #1717 failed in the Test Sanitizer stage of the x86_64-tsan variant (stage id 191); the ASAN/UBSAN variant (stage 206) passed. All standalone binaries (agent_example, nixl_example, ucx_backend_test, nixl_posix_test, serdes_test, test_plugin) printed PASSED, and the only failure was in the meson gtest suite:

[ FAILED ] 1 test, listed below:
[ FAILED ] MDManagerEtcdFixture.InvalidateLocalRemovesRemote
 1 FAILED TEST

followed by ==== Sanitizer test FAILURES: meson sanitizer suite ==== / + exit 1.

Root cause: MDManagerEtcdFixture.InvalidateLocalRemovesRemote (test/gtest/md_manager.cpp:305) publishes metadata to the live etcd store, fetches it on a second agent, then calls src.agent->invalidateLocalMD(nullptr) and polls checkRemoteMD until it returns NIXL_ERR_NOT_FOUND (test/gtest/md_manager.cpp:313-315). The destination agent only learns of the key removal through the etcd agent watcher. If the watcher is established after the key is read, the DELETE revision produced by invalidateLocalMD falls in the gap between the fetched revision and the start of the watch, the delete event is never delivered, and the cached remote entry is never dropped — so the poll keeps returning NIXL_SUCCESS until the 15 s sanitizer timeout (kRemoteMdTimeout, md_manager.cpp:89-90) expires and the EXPECT_EQ fails. The window is wide enough to hit only under the heavily-slowed TSAN build, which is exactly why the ASAN/UBSAN variant of the same commit passed. This is a known defect: open PR #2413, "etcd md: start the agent watcher at the fetched revision", changes precisely this ordering.

Nothing in the triggering commit touches this code path. [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] ("tracing: mark completions that a repost or a release sees first", Efraim Eygin) and its parents on this branch are tracing/telemetry changes in src/core; no commit in the recent history touches the metadata manager or the etcd backend. The stage log also shows no hang — timestamps advance continuously with no gap larger than ~1 s, so this is a genuine assertion failure, not a wall-clock kill.

Implicated commit: none for the trigger — 00cf0759 (Efraim Eygin, tracing) is unrelated to the failing test. The defect lives in the etcd metadata backend's watcher-start ordering, addressed by open PR #2413.

File: test/gtest/md_manager.cpp:305-316 (failing assertion at :314); underlying defect in the etcd metadata backend's watcher start (see PR #2413)

Suggested fix: Land PR #2413 so the agent watcher is created at the revision returned by the metadata fetch, closing the gap in which an invalidateLocalMD delete can be missed. Until then, unblock this PR by rebasing/re-running — the failure is independent of the tracing commit under test. If it recurs, add MDManagerEtcdFixture.InvalidateLocalRemovesRemote to the existing sanitizer --gtest_filter exclusion in test/gtest/meson.build:196-198 (which already excludes MetadataExchangeTestFixture.* for a similar sanitizer-only reason), with a comment pointing at #2413. Do not simply raise kRemoteMdTimeout: a missed watch event never resolves, so a longer wait cannot fix it.

Related: #2413 (etcd md: start the agent watcher at the fetched revision), #2424 (CI: print gtest failures when the sanitizer suite fails — the change that made this failure visible in the stage log), #2349 (test: lengthen the md_manager remote-MD wait under sanitizers — prior timing mitigation in this same file)

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-gpu-vr · commit 00cf0759

TL;DR: The build never ran any tests — it failed in the "Allocate Environment" stage because salloc on the vrnvl72 Slurm partition sat queued for the full --immediate=3600 (1 h) window and gave up with "Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out". This is a cluster-capacity/infra failure unrelated to PR #2462; re-run the job (and review the 4-node --exclude list that shrinks the usable pool).

Full analysis

Summary: Stage "Allocate Environment" (node ID 164) failed after 3,609,696 ms when the Slurm allocation for job name nixl-ci-gpu-vr-437 could not be satisfied.

Root cause: The pipeline requests a node via SSH to dlcluster.nvidia.com:

salloc -N 1 -p vrnvl72 --job-name=nixl-ci-gpu-vr-437 --immediate=3600 --time=02:00:00 --no-shell \
  --account=rubin --gres=gpu:2 --mem=128G --mincpus=24 \
  --exclude=vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp137,vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp139,vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp141,vr-nvl72-ts2b-l10-comp102

Slurm accepted it as pending allocation 2692839 ("queued and waiting for resources") and then, after exactly the --immediate=3600 deadline (submitted 18:04:35Z, failed 19:04:43Z), returned salloc: error: Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out. The ~60-minute gap in the log is not a hung process — it is Slurm legitimately waiting in the scheduling queue, which is what --immediate=3600 instructs it to do, and the failure message is Slurm's own immediate-timeout path. No node in vrnvl72 matching gpu:2 / 128G / 24 CPUs freed up within the hour; the --exclude of four vr-nvl72-* compute nodes further reduces the eligible pool.

Everything before this succeeded: "Compiling NIXL Docker Image" built nixl 1.6.0 + nixlbench cleanly and pushed nixl-ci-gpu-vr-test:437. The commit under test (00cf075, tracing/xfer.complete work on nix-2261-sync-completion-mark) was never exercised, so there is no evidence of a code defect in this build.

Implicated commit: unknown — no product code is implicated. The nearest related CI change is [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] "CI: request 2 GPUs instead of a whole node for nixl-ci-gpu-vr (#2352)" by NirWolfer, which introduced the --gres=gpu:2 --mem=128G --mincpus=24 shape used here.

File: Slurm allocation step in the nixl-ci-gpu-vr Jenkins pipeline definition (the slurm.allocation call with partition:vrnvl72, immediateTimeout:3600, extraArgs:[--account=rubin, --gres=gpu:2, --mem=128G, --mincpus=24, --exclude=...]) — the .ci/jenkins pipeline config for this job.

Suggested fix:

  1. Re-trigger build nixlbench: Add libgtest dependency to build gtest #437 for PR tracing: mark xfer.complete when postXferReq completes the transfer #2462 — the failure carries no signal about the PR.
  2. Ask the cluster owners whether the four excluded vr-nvl72-* nodes (ts3-l06-comp137/139/141, ts2b-l10-comp102) can be returned to service; with them excluded the vrnvl72 pool is small enough that an hour of queueing is routinely exceeded.
  3. Make this class of failure non-blocking: wrap the slurm.allocation step so an Unable to allocate resources / immediate-timeout result either retries the salloc once or two times, or marks the build UNSTABLE/NOT_BUILT rather than FAILURE, so queue contention doesn't read as a PR regression. Do not simply raise jobTimeout — the 2 h job limit was never reached; it's the 1 h immediateTimeout queue wait and the lack of free nodes that matter.

Related: PR #2352 (CI: request 2 GPUs instead of a whole node for nixl-ci-gpu-vr), PR #2462 (the PR under test, unaffected by this failure).

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-gpu-vr · commit 00cf0759

TL;DR: The build never reached any test — the Allocate Environment stage sat in the slurm queue on partition vrnvl72 for the full --immediate=3600 window and salloc gave up with "Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out". This is a cluster-capacity/allocation failure, unrelated to commit 00cf075; retry the build and re-check vrnvl72 node availability (including the four nodes CI currently excludes).

Full analysis

Summary: Stage Allocate Environment (node 164) failed after 60 minutes: slurm job 2693893 stayed queued and waiting for resources and salloc aborted, failing the parallel branch build_helper_dl/aarch64/1 and the whole pipeline.

Root cause: The pipeline built successfully (Compiling NIXL Docker Image passed in 11 min, image nixl-ci-gpu-vr-test:439 pushed at 19:20:12). The next stage requested an allocation:

salloc -N 1 -p vrnvl72 --job-name=nixl-ci-gpu-vr-439 --immediate=3600 --time=02:00:00 \
  --no-shell --account=rubin --gres=gpu:2 --mem=128G --mincpus=24 \
  --exclude=vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp137,vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp139,vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp141,vr-nvl72-ts2b-l10-comp102

Submitted at 19:20:19, result at 20:20:27 — exactly the 3600 s --immediate budget:

salloc: Pending job allocation 2693893
salloc: job 2693893 queued and waiting for resources
salloc: error: Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out

The one-hour gap in the log is salloc deliberately blocking in the slurm queue, i.e. the expected behaviour of --immediate=3600, not a hung build step — no nixl code ever ran. No node in vrnvl72 satisfying --gres=gpu:2 --mem=128G --mincpus=24 with four nodes explicitly excluded became free inside that hour. The commit under test (00cf075, a tracing change in PR #2462) is not implicated: compilation and image push both succeeded before the allocation attempt.

A secondary, cosmetic issue in the same run: pipeline_stop reported WARNING: No job ID files found in /mnt/pvc/nixl-ci-gpu-vr/ — because salloc never succeeded, jobIdFile:/mnt/pvc/nixl-ci-gpu-vr/job_id_439.txt was never written, so the stale allocation 2693893 was not explicitly cancelled by the cleanup stage.

Implicated commit: unknown — no code commit is responsible. The exclude list that narrows the eligible node pool was added in 1f87bd7b "CI: exclude misconfigured Vera Rubin nodes from nixl-ci-gpu-vr (#2339)" (NirWolfer), and the 2-GPU/partial-node request in [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] (#2352, NirWolfer).

File: Jenkins slurm allocation config for nixl-ci-gpu-vr (the slurm.allocation call with partition: vrnvl72, immediateTimeout: 3600, extraArgs exclude list) — under .ci/jenkins/; exact file not resolvable via the source tool in this checkout.

Suggested fix:

  1. Re-trigger build Python: bindings optimizations and support numpy arrays for xfer_dlist #439 — this is a transient capacity failure, not a code defect.
  2. Have an admin check sinfo -p vrnvl72 / squeue -p vrnvl72 for drained or fully-booked nodes; with four nodes excluded the eligible pool may now be too small to absorb normal CI load. If vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp137/139/141 and vr-nvl72-ts2b-l10-comp102 have since been fixed, drop them from --exclude (reverting CI: exclude misconfigured Vera Rubin nodes from nixl-ci-gpu-vr #2339) to restore capacity.
  3. Make Allocate Environment resilient: wrap it in a Jenkins retry(2) and/or mark the build UNSTABLE rather than FAILURE when salloc exits without an allocation, so a queue timeout is not reported as a PR test failure.
  4. Fix the cleanup gap: write the pending job ID to jobIdFile as soon as salloc prints "Pending job allocation " (or scancel --name=nixl-ci-gpu-vr-<build> in pipeline_stop) so an allocation that times out cannot linger.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-gpu-vr · commit 00cf0759

TL;DR: The build failed in the "Allocate Environment" stage — salloc on the vrnvl72 partition sat queued for the full --immediate=3600 window and gave up with "Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out". This is a Slurm capacity/availability problem on the Vera Rubin partition, not a defect in the commit under test; retrigger the build and/or re-check whether the four hard-excluded vr-nvl72 nodes can be returned to service.

Full analysis

Summary: nixl-ci-gpu-vr #441 failed in the Allocate Environment stage (ID 164) after a 60-minute Slurm allocation wait; all build/compile/image stages succeeded.

Root cause: The pipeline requested a node via SSH to dlcluster.nvidia.com:

salloc -N 1 -p vrnvl72 --job-name=nixl-ci-gpu-vr-441 --immediate=3600 --time=02:00:00 --no-shell
  --account=rubin --gres=gpu:2 --mem=128G --mincpus=24
  --exclude=vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp137,vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp139,vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp141,vr-nvl72-ts2b-l10-comp102

Slurm accepted it as pending job allocation 2695006 — salloc: job 2695006 queued and waiting for resources — and then, after exactly the --immediate=3600 (one hour) limit, returned salloc: error: Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out. The stage duration (3,610,068 ms ≈ 60.2 min) matches that limit precisely.

The one-hour gap between the ssh ... salloc line at 20:37:49 and the output at 21:37:58 is not a hang in a build step — it is the buffered SSH session returning all at once when salloc gave up. Slurm itself reported the job as queued and waiting for resources for that entire window, i.e. no node in vrnvl72 satisfying gpu:2 + 128G + 24 CPUs became free. Nothing in the NIXL build was running or stuck: the preceding stage ("Compiling NIXL Docker Image", 663 s) completed cleanly, built all 358 ninja targets, installed, built nixlbench, and successfully pushed nixl-ci-gpu-vr-test:441 to Artifactory.

The capacity pressure is aggravated by the four vr-nvl72 nodes hard-excluded from every allocation on this partition (added in #2339 for misconfiguration), which shrinks the pool this job can land on.

Implicated commit: none — commit 00cf0759 (PR #2462, "tracing: mark xfer.complete when postXferReq completes the transfer") is unrelated; the failure occurs before any test binary runs. The allocation arguments were last shaped by [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] (NirWolfer, "CI: request 2 GPUs instead of a whole node for nixl-ci-gpu-vr", #2352) and the exclude list by #2339.

File: Jenkins stage Allocate Environment (stage ID 164) of nixl-ci-gpu-vr — the slurm.allocation call with partition:vrnvl72, immediateTimeout:3600; allocation ID 2695006.

Suggested fix:

  1. Retrigger the build — this is a transient resource-starvation failure with no code signal, so PR tracing: mark xfer.complete when postXferReq completes the transfer #2462 should not be blocked on it.
  2. Ask the cluster admins to look at allocation 2695006 on partition vrnvl72 to see what was occupying the partition during 20:37–21:38 UTC on 2026-10-20, and whether the four excluded nodes (vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp137/139/141, vr-nvl72-ts2b-l10-comp102) can be repaired and removed from the --exclude list to restore capacity.
  3. Make the failure mode cheaper and clearer: the job burns a full hour of Jenkins executor time to produce one error line. Either lower immediateTimeout (e.g. 900 s) so the queue wait fails fast and retries, or wrap the salloc in a bounded retry loop so a busy partition produces a quick retry rather than a 60-minute red build. Emitting squeue/sinfo -p vrnvl72 output on allocation failure would also make the next occurrence diagnosable without guessing.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-gpu-vr · commit 00cf0759

TL;DR: The build failed in the "Allocate Environment" stage because salloc on the vrnvl72 Slurm partition never got resources within its 1-hour --immediate=3600 window (job 2696686 stayed queued, then salloc: error: Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out). This is a cluster-capacity/infra failure, not a defect in PR #2462 — retry the build, and consider shrinking the --exclude node list or raising the immediate-wait handling to a clean "no capacity" retry.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage "Allocate Environment" (node 164) failed after 3610s — Slurm could not allocate a node on partition vrnvl72, so the GPU test stage never ran.

Root cause: Everything the PR touches built successfully: the "Compiling NIXL Docker Image" stage completed in 663s, meson/ninja built all 358 targets, nixlbench built and installed, and the test image nixl-ci-gpu-vr-test:444 was committed and pushed to Artifactory at 21:55:07. The pipeline then entered the Slurm allocation step:

  • 21:55:13 — salloc -N 1 -p vrnvl72 --job-name=nixl-ci-gpu-vr-444 --immediate=3600 --time=02:00:00 --no-shell --account=rubin --gres=gpu:2 --mem=128G --mincpus=24 --exclude=vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp137,...comp139,...comp141,vr-nvl72-ts2b-l10-comp102
  • 22:55:22 — salloc: Pending job allocation 2696686 / job 2696686 queued and waiting for resources / salloc: error: Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out

The 60-minute gap between those two lines is not a hang in any nixl code — it is salloc itself blocking on --immediate=3600, which is exactly 3600 s, and the stage duration (3610613 ms) matches that to the second. The allocation request was pending the whole time and was rejected when the immediate window expired. No nixl process was running during the silence; the job was simply queued behind other work on vrnvl72.

Two aggravating factors visible in the request itself: the partition is a small Vera Rubin pool, and the --exclude list removes four nodes from it (added in #2339 for misconfigured hardware), further narrowing an already contended partition. The gpu:2/mem=128G/mincpus=24 constraints were introduced by #2352 specifically to avoid needing a whole node, so the shape of the request is already minimal.

Implicated commit: None in the PR under test. The relevant CI-side commits shaping the allocation request are [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] (NirWolfer, "CI: request 2 GPUs instead of a whole node for nixl-ci-gpu-vr", #2352) and 1f87bd7b (NirWolfer, "CI: exclude misconfigured Vera Rubin nodes from nixl-ci-gpu-vr", #2339). Commit 00cf0759 (PR #2462, tracing xfer.complete) is not implicated — its code compiled cleanly and never executed.

File: Jenkins pipeline Slurm allocation step for nixl-ci-gpu-vr — the slurm.allocation call with partition: vrnvl72, immediateTimeout: 3600 (swx-jenkins-lib slurm.allocation, invoked from the nixl-ci-gpu-vr job definition under .ci/jenkins/)

Suggested fix:

  1. Immediate action: retry build [Question]: Is etcd required for metadata exchange between agents on different nodes? #444. The allocation failure is transient contention; nothing in the commit needs changing.
  2. Reduce false failures: have the pipeline distinguish Unable to allocate resources from a real test failure and auto-retry (or mark UNSTABLE/skip) rather than failing the PR — right now a busy partition reads as a red PR check, which is misleading to the author of tracing: mark xfer.complete when postXferReq completes the transfer #2462.
  3. Widen the pool: re-verify whether the four nodes excluded by CI: exclude misconfigured Vera Rubin nodes from nixl-ci-gpu-vr #2339 (vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp137/139/141, vr-nvl72-ts2b-l10-comp102) are still misconfigured. With a partition this small, four excluded nodes materially increases queue time; if any have been repaired, dropping them from --exclude is the cheapest capacity win.
  4. Ask the cluster admins to look at allocation 2696686 on vrnvl72 / account rubin to confirm whether the hour of pending was ordinary queueing or nodes being down/drained.

Do not raise jobTimeout/--time — the job never started, so the 2-hour run limit was never the constraint. Raising immediateTimeout past 3600 would only make the job sit longer before reporting the same thing.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-gpu-vr · commit 00cf0759

TL;DR: The build never ran any tests — the "Allocate Environment" stage's salloc on the vrnvl72 Slurm partition sat queued for exactly its --immediate=3600 window and then failed with Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out, so this is a cluster-capacity/infra failure unrelated to PR #2462's code.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage "Allocate Environment" (node ID 164) of nixl-ci-gpu-vr #446 failed after ~60 min when the Slurm allocation request for the Vera Rubin partition could not be satisfied.

Root cause: Everything up to allocation succeeded — "Compiling NIXL Docker Image" finished and the test image was pushed to Artifactory at 05:14:15. The pipeline then ran:

salloc -N 1 -p vrnvl72 --job-name=nixl-ci-gpu-vr-446 --immediate=3600 --time=02:00:00 --no-shell \
  --account=rubin --gres=gpu:2 --mem=128G --mincpus=24 \
  --exclude=vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp137,vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp139,vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp141,vr-nvl72-ts2b-l10-comp102

Slurm accepted it as job allocation 2706592, reported queued and waiting for resources, and then ended with salloc: error: Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out. The log gap is 05:14:24 → 06:14:32 — exactly 3600 s, i.e. the --immediate=3600 deadline, not an arbitrary hang. Nothing in the job was executing during that window; it was pending in the scheduler queue. This is the expected failure mode when the vrnvl72 partition has no node matching the request (2 GPUs, 128 GB, 24 CPUs) free within an hour, aggravated by the four --excluded nodes from PR #2339 shrinking the eligible pool. No NIXL code was exercised, so commit 00cf075 / PR #2462 cannot be the cause.

Implicated commit: unknown — no product commit is implicated. The relevant CI config history is [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] (NirWolfer, "CI: request 2 GPUs instead of a whole node for nixl-ci-gpu-vr", #2352) and the node-exclusion change in #2339, but neither is a defect; the failure is partition capacity.

File: Jenkins nixl-ci-gpu-vr pipeline definition, "Allocate Environment" stage — the slurm.allocation call with partition: vrnvl72, immediateTimeout: 3600, and the 4-node --exclude list (build log stage 164, lines 2–6). The declarative pipeline file is not present under .ci/jenkins/pipeline/ in this checkout, so the exact path could not be confirmed.

Suggested fix: Treat this as a retryable infra failure, not a code failure:

  1. Re-run build CI: Reduce log verbosity in AWS EFA test waiting loops #446 — the allocation is transient and will succeed once a vrnvl72 node frees up.
  2. Ask the cluster admins to check allocation 2706592 on vrnvl72 / account rubin for its pending state_reason; if the four excluded nodes (vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp137/139/141, vr-nvl72-ts2b-l10-comp102) have since been repaired, drop them from --exclude to restore the eligible node pool.
  3. Make the pipeline distinguish "could not allocate" from "test failed" — wrap the salloc step in a bounded retry and mark the build UNSTABLE/NOT_BUILT on Unable to allocate resources, so PR authors aren't shown a red build for scheduler contention.
  4. Also worth fixing while in that stage: the ssh ... echo ...; salloc ... command is unquoted, so the salloc half runs on the Jenkins agent rather than remotely as likely intended — quote the remote command string.

Related: PR #2352 (reduced request to 2 GPUs), PR #2339 (excluded the misconfigured Vera Rubin nodes), PR #2462 (the PR under test — not implicated).

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-gpu-vr · commit 00cf0759

TL;DR: The build didn't fail on code — the "Allocate Environment" stage spent its full --immediate=3600 window queued for a slurm allocation on the vrnvl72 partition and gave up with salloc: error: Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out. Retry the build; if vrnvl72 capacity is chronically short, trim the --exclude list or raise/handle the immediate timeout with a retry loop rather than a hard failure.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage "Allocate Environment" (node 164) failed after 3,610 s because the slurm salloc for job nixl-ci-gpu-vr-450 never got resources on partition vrnvl72.

Root cause: Pure resource-availability failure in the scheduler, not a defect in commit 00cf075. The preceding stage "Compiling NIXL Docker Image" (node 149) completed successfully — the full NIXL + nixlbench build, install, image commit and podman push all succeeded at 07:54:50. The allocation request was then submitted at 07:55:00:

salloc -N 1 -p vrnvl72 --job-name=nixl-ci-gpu-vr-450 --immediate=3600 --time=02:00:00 \
  --no-shell --account=rubin --gres=gpu:2 --mem=128G --mincpus=24 \
  --exclude=vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp137,vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp139,vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp141,vr-nvl72-ts2b-l10-comp102
salloc: Pending job allocation 2710797
salloc: job 2710797 queued and waiting for resources
salloc: error: Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out

Slurm accepted the request (allocation ID 2710797 was created and went Pending), then slurm itself emitted the terminal error at 08:55:09 — exactly 3600 s later, matching --immediate=3600. The one-hour gap between the two log lines is slurm's own queue wait inside a single blocking salloc call, i.e. the documented behaviour of --immediate expiring, not a hung process or a build step that stopped producing output. The job never started, so no test ever ran, and the parallel branch build_helper_dl/aarch64/1 aborted with exit code 1. The --exclude of four vr-nvl72 nodes further narrows an already contended partition.

Implicated commit: none — this is not a code regression. The commit under test ([REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String], PR #2462) built cleanly.

File: CI pipeline slurm allocation config (slurm.allocation call with immediateTimeout: 3600, partition: vrnvl72) — visible in the stage log at [2026-10-21T07:54:59.642Z]; not a repo source file.

Suggested fix: Re-run build #450 — this is a transient capacity failure and should pass once vrnvl72 frees a node. To reduce recurrence: (1) have the pipeline treat a --immediate expiry as a retryable condition and loop/re-submit instead of failing the branch outright; (2) re-audit the four excluded vr-nvl72 nodes — if any have since been repaired, removing them from --exclude restores scheduling headroom; (3) quote allocation ID 2710797 to the cluster admins if you need to know what was occupying the partition during the 07:55–08:55 window.

Related: PR #2352 "CI: request 2 GPUs instead of a whole node for nixl-ci-gpu-vr" (closed) — prior work on this same job's allocation footprint, which already reduced the request to --gres=gpu:2; the current failure suggests vrnvl72 contention persists even at that reduced size. Build under test: PR #2462.

A transfer that the backend completes inside postXfer makes postXferReq
return NIXL_SUCCESS, and getXferStatus marks only requests still in
progress, so such a transfer recorded no nixl::xfer.complete. Mark it in
postXferReq on NIXL_SUCCESS, under the request's context, so a successful
post is marked once whether it completes at once or later.

The test recorder now writes a line for marks, and agent unit tests cover
a post completed at once, completed later, posted twice and failed.

The repost check in postXferReq and releaseXferReq can be the first
calls to see a transfer complete, and neither recorded
nixl::xfer.complete. Both now mark it when their checkXfer returns
NIXL_SUCCESS, under the request's context, so every completed post is
marked once, whichever call sees it first. A transfer that
releaseXferReq cancels is not marked. Telemetry is unchanged.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep · commit 70af087b

TL;DR: The --disable-ll-nvlink (RDMA) elastic-EP test failed because UCX selected a lane set that cannot back a device memory list (ucp_device.c: lane not found for element 1 / failed to pack uct memory element), making nixlUcxEngine::prepMemView return NIXL_ERR_BACKEND and killing all 4 workers; the RDMA branch of .gitlab/test_ep.sh leaves UCX_TLS/UCX_NET_DEVICES unpinned, so fix the test's transport selection (already proposed in PR #2430) rather than the PR under test.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage "Run DL NIXL EP tests" (node 207) failed: examples/device/ep/tests/elastic/elastic.py --plan no_expansion.json ... --disable-ll-nvlink aborted with RuntimeError: Worker processes failed: worker 0..3 (exit code 1), and srun: error: gb-nvl-118-compute01: task 0: Exited with exit code 1.

Root cause: Environment/transport selection in the RDMA variant of the EP test, not a hang and not a timeout. The two NVLink plans passed cleanly (bandwidth ~450 GB/s, fault/contraction phases all validated). The third invocation adds --disable-ll-nvlink, and .gitlab/test_ep.sh deliberately skips the UCX_TLS=^rc_gda pin in that case (if [[ "$extra_flags" != *--disable-ll-nvlink* ]]) while also unset UCX_NET_DEVICES. With nothing pinned, UCX built an endpoint whose lanes don't all support device-side memory lists, and all four ranks failed immediately at buffer registration:

ucp_device.c:669 UCX ERROR failed to pack uct memory element for first element
ucp_device.c:700 UCX ERROR lane not found for element 1
ucp_device.c:819 UCX ERROR failed to create handle: Invalid parameter
E ucx_backend.cpp:845] Failed to prepare remote memory view: Failed to create device memory list(remote): Invalid parameter

This is nixlUcxEngine::prepMemViewImpl catching the exception from nixl::ucx::createMemList and returning NIXL_ERR_BACKEND. The node is a mixed-NIC GB200 (mlx5_0..3 CX-8 InfiniBand PORT_ACTIVE; mlx5_4/mlx5_5 Ethernet PORT_DOWN), and the script's gate all_rdma_nics_active only checks mlx5_0..mlx5_3, so the RDMA tests were allowed to run on a host where auto-selection can still land on an unusable lane. The immediately preceding build #1858 passed the same stage, and nothing in the commit's area (sync completion mark) is touched by prepMemView/createMemList — this is an infrastructure/test-harness defect, consistent with the already-open PR #2430 "ci: pin UCX transports for the RDMA elastic EP tests".

Implicated commit: unknown — not caused by 70af087 (branch nix-2261-sync-completion-mark). The failing code path is pre-existing; the relevant harness logic dates to 55bcf4d / [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] (lishapira, Itay Alroy) in .gitlab/test_ep.sh.

File: .gitlab/test_ep.sh:74-76 (the UCX_TLS pin skipped for --disable-ll-nvlink) and .gitlab/test_ep.sh:95-103 (all_rdma_nics_active gate); failure surfaces at src/plugins/ucx/ucx_backend.cpp:845.

Suggested fix: Pin the transports and devices explicitly for the RDMA variant instead of relying on UCX auto-selection — e.g. in run_elastic_test, when extra_flags contains --disable-ll-nvlink, export UCX_TLS=rc_gda (or the explicit device-capable TLS list) and UCX_NET_DEVICES=mlx5_0:1,mlx5_1:1,mlx5_2:1,mlx5_3:1 so the known-down Ethernet HCAs (mlx5_4/mlx5_5) and non-device-capable lanes can never be chosen. Land PR #2430, which addresses exactly this. Separately, consider making nixlUcxEngine::prepMemViewImpl log the selected TLS/device set alongside the error at ucx_backend.cpp:845 — the current message gives no hint which lane was missing.

Related: PR #2430 (ci: pin UCX transports for the RDMA elastic EP tests) — open, same signature; PR #2462 is the build under test and is not implicated.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-build-container-pr · commit 70af087b

TL;DR: The build did not fail on PR code — one of four parallel "Setup docker" lanes died with Error: logging into "il.artifactory.nvidia.com": invalid username/password (podman exit 125), while the other three lanes authenticated successfully seconds apart; fix is to add a retry/backoff (and credential verification) around the registry login in the Setup docker step.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage Setup docker (node id 89) in the Parallel block failed with podman exit code 125 — registry login to il.artifactory.nvidia.com was rejected — aborting the whole pipeline even though all three Build image stages succeeded.

Root cause: A transient authentication rejection from the IL Artifactory registry, not a bad credential or a code defect:

  • Failing lane (stage 89, 10:17:02–10:17:03Z): Error: logging into "il.artifactory.nvidia.com": invalid username/password, then Setup docker failed with exit code=125.
  • The other three lanes (stages 99, 143, 193) ran the same login in the same 15-second window (10:17:03–10:17:20Z) and each printed Login Succeeded! twice.
Identical credentials succeeding 7 times and failing once in parallel points at a registry-side transient 401 / concurrent-login throttling, not an expired or wrong secret. The login step has no retry, so a single rejection fails the stage, and the pipeline's parallel has no failFast tolerance — it aborts the build (hudson.AbortException: parallel task failed ... Setup docker failed with exit code=125) despite "Container build verification passed" for nixl and nixlbench on both x86_64 and aarch64.

There is no hang: the longest gap in the failing lane's log is under 2 seconds, and the build's 2492949 ms duration is the still-running sibling lanes, not a stall.

Implicated commit: [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] — "ci: Move to the IL Artifactory instance (#2342)", NirWolfer (and the follow-up [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String], "CI: Move urm.nvidia.com refs to artifactory.nvidia.com (#2410)", Alexey Rivkin), which introduced the il.artifactory.nvidia.com login now failing. Not related to PR #2462 / commit 70af087.

File: the Setup docker step of the nixl-ci-build-container-pr pipeline definition under .ci/jenkins/ (the podman/docker login il.artifactory.nvidia.com invocation) — exact path not resolvable via the source tool from here; search_git_history on .ci/jenkins/pipeline confirms [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] as the change that added it.

Suggested fix:

  1. Wrap the registry login in a bounded retry with backoff, e.g. for i in 1 2 3; do podman login ... && break; sleep $((i*5)); done (or a Jenkins retry(3) around the Setup docker step), so a single transient 401 does not kill a 40-minute build.
  2. Reduce concurrent logins: perform the login once and share --authfile / REGISTRY_AUTH_FILE across the four parallel lanes instead of each lane logging in twice independently.
  3. Separately confirm with the Artifactory/IT owners that the CI identity token for il.artifactory.nvidia.com is current and not rate-limited for concurrent auth; if the token is near expiry, rotate it (do not paste it into the ticket).
  4. Re-run build libfabric: remove cm thread [Will squash before merge] #1251 — this is expected to pass as-is.

Also worth cleaning up as noise in the same step: shutting down container storage: umount /var/lib/containers/storage/overlay ... no such file or directory appears in all four lanes, including the passing ones, so it is not the failure cause.

Related: #2342 (ci: Move to the IL Artifactory instance), #2410 (CI: Move urm.nvidia.com refs to artifactory.nvidia.com), #2447 (ci: Use basic auth for jf in the Artifactory cleanup job) — the same Artifactory migration series; #2433 (ci: Move verification images and wheels to IL Artifactory) is still open and touches the same registry.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-gpu-vr · commit 70af087b

TL;DR: The build and image push succeeded; the job failed only because the slurm allocation on partition vrnvl72 never got resources — salloc sat queued for the full --immediate=3600 hour and exited with "Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out". This is a cluster-capacity/infra failure, not a defect in commit 70af087.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage "Allocate Environment" (node 164) failed after 3610 s when salloc could not obtain a node in the vrnvl72 partition; the parallel branch build_helper_dl/aarch64/1 then aborted the pipeline.

Root cause: The pipeline's "Compiling NIXL Docker Image" stage completed successfully (698 s, image nixl-ci-gpu-vr-test:451 built, pushed, nixl + nixlbench compiled and installed with no errors). The subsequent allocation step ran:

salloc -N 1 -p vrnvl72 --job-name=nixl-ci-gpu-vr-451 --immediate=3600 --time=02:00:00 --no-shell \
  --account=rubin --gres=gpu:2 --mem=128G --mincpus=24 \
  --exclude=vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp137,vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp139,vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp141,vr-nvl72-ts2b-l10-comp102

slurm accepted it as pending job 2714026 ("queued and waiting for resources") at 10:29:00Z and the command returned at 11:29:09Z with salloc: error: Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out. The single ~60-minute gap between log lines is exactly the --immediate=3600 deadline being consumed by queue wait — this is salloc blocking on unavailable resources, not a hung test or a slow build. No NIXL test ever executed, so nothing in this PR's code was exercised. The four --excluded vr-nvl72 nodes shrink the eligible pool further, making a no-resources outcome more likely when the partition is busy or partly drained.

Implicated commit: unknown — no commit is implicated; the failure is in environment allocation, before any test ran.

File: Jenkins pipeline allocation step (slurm.allocation call, args logged at Allocate Environment stage, node 164) — partition: vrnvl72, immediateTimeout: 3600

Suggested fix:

  1. Re-run build If I initiate a send/recv communication, how can I know when the send or receive has completed? #451 — a pending-then-timeout allocation is transient; the artifact/image build is already green.
  2. If it recurs, have an admin check vrnvl72 capacity and the state of the excluded nodes (vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp137/139/141, vr-nvl72-ts2b-l10-comp102) — quote slurm allocation ID 2714026 when asking; if those nodes are back to healthy, drop them from --exclude to restore the eligible pool.
  3. Make the pipeline distinguish this case: on Unable to allocate resources from salloc, retry the allocation (e.g. 2–3 attempts with backoff) or mark the build UNSTABLE/NOT_BUILT rather than FAILURE, so a capacity shortage is not reported as a PR regression against tracing: mark xfer.complete when postXferReq completes the transfer #2462.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep · commit 70af087b

TL;DR: The --disable-ll-nvlink (RDMA) variant of the elastic EP test fails because UCX auto-selects transport lanes that don't support the GPU-initiated device API, so createMemList fails with "lane not found for element 1 / Invalid parameter"; pin UCX_TLS (and the NIC list) for the RDMA runs in .gitlab/test_ep.sh — this is pre-existing and not caused by PR #2462.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage "Run DL NIXL EP tests" (node 207) failed on the third sub-test — elastic.py --plan no_expansion.json --disable-ll-nvlink — with all 4 worker processes exiting code 1.

Root cause: Not a timeout and not a node fault: the two NVLink elastic runs passed cleanly (448–505 GB/s, phases 0–3 complete, including the planned SIGTERM fault-injection), and the log shows continuous activity to the end. The RDMA run fails immediately at connection setup:

ucp_device.c:669 UCX ERROR failed to pack uct memory element for first element
ucp_device.c:700 UCX ERROR lane not found for element 1
ucp_device.c:819 UCX ERROR failed to create handle: Invalid parameter
E ucx_backend.cpp:845] Failed to prepare remote memory view:
Failed to create device memory list(remote): Invalid parameter

nixlUcxEngine::prepMemViewImpl calls nixl::ucx::createMemList, which throws and is logged at ucx_backend.cpp:845, returning NIXL_ERR_BACKEND → all ranks abort → RuntimeError: Worker processes failed at elastic.py:707.

The reason UCX can't find a device-capable lane is the test's own environment handling. In .gitlab/test_ep.sh, run_elastic_test unsets UCX_NET_DEVICES and only sets UCX_TLS for the NVLink runs:

unset UCX_NET_DEVICES # line 72
if [[ "$extra_flags" != *--disable-ll-nvlink* ]]; then
    export UCX_TLS=^rc_gda # line 75
fi

So the RDMA run executes with no transport or device pinning at all (visible in the log: + [[ --disable-ll-nvlink != *--disable-ll-nvlink* ]] with no export UCX_TLS following). UCX then auto-selects across all HCAs on this GB200 NVL node — including mlx5_4/mlx5_5, which ibv_devinfo reports as PORT_DOWN (1), Ethernet. The all_rdma_nics_active gate (lines 95–103) only checks mlx5_0..mlx5_3, so it passes and the RDMA test runs anyway. The resulting lane set has no GPU-direct-async (rc_gda) lane for element 1, which is exactly what the device memory-list packing requires.

Evidence this is pre-existing, not from this commit: build #1861 (different commit, same job, same node gb-nvl-118-compute01) fails with a byte-for-byte identical signature — same ucp_device.c:669/700/819 errors, same ucx_backend.cpp:845, same traceback at elastic.py:713/707, same four-worker abort. PR #2462 ("tracing: mark xfer.complete when postXferReq completes the transfer") touches the tracing path and cannot produce a failure in UCX lane selection during memory-view prep.

Implicated commit: unknown — not introduced by 70af087b (PR #2462). The gap is in the CI test harness, which has lacked RDMA transport pinning since 55bcf4dc (lishapira, "ci: Add nixl ep to new dl ci pipeline", #1802); the nearest related plugin changes are 466ebb1c (Yaser Afshar, VRAM memtype hint query behavior) and [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] (Thomas Vegas, GET over CUDA IPC without NVLINK).

File: .gitlab/test_ep.sh:72-76 (missing UCX_TLS/UCX_NET_DEVICES for the --disable-ll-nvlink path) and .gitlab/test_ep.sh:95-103 (NIC gate ignores mlx5_4/mlx5_5); failure surfaces at src/plugins/ucx/ucx_backend.cpp:845 in prepMemViewImpl.

Suggested fix: Land PR #2430 ("ci: pin UCX transports for the RDMA elastic EP tests"), which addresses exactly this. Concretely, give the RDMA branch an explicit transport and device list instead of leaving auto-selection unconstrained:

if [[ "$extra_flags" != *--disable-ll-nvlink* ]]; then
    export UCX_TLS=^rc_gda
else
    # RDMA path needs the GPU-direct-async lane; restrict to the
    # four PORT_ACTIVE IB HCAs so UCX cannot pick the down
    # Ethernet devices (mlx5_4/mlx5_5).
    export UCX_TLS=rc_gda,cuda_copy
    export UCX_NET_DEVICES=mlx5_0:1,mlx5_1:1,mlx5_2:1,mlx5_3:1
fi

Two follow-ups worth doing: (1) make prepMemViewImpl log the resolved UCX_TLS/lane set when createMemList throws, since "Invalid parameter" alone doesn't point at transport selection; (2) re-run #2462's CI after #2430 merges, as this job currently cannot pass on gb-nvl-118-compute01 regardless of the PR under test — it should not be treated as a signal against #2462.
