backend: add supportsTraceContext() and degrade tracing, not transfers - #2335
Conversation
nixlBackendEngine gains supportsTraceContext(), defaulted to false, for a backend to declare that it carries the request's trace context to its peer. Core reads it once, when a remote-capable backend is created with tracing on. A sampled request on a backend that cannot carry the context runs as before, and core logs that once per backend rather than once per request. Request creation no longer lets a failure to generate a trace context escape createXferReq or makeXferReq: the request runs with the zeroed context and the first failure is logged as an error. NIXL_PLUGIN_API_VERSION stays at 2. Version 2 is in no release yet (v1.5.0 reports 1), so the new virtual joins it, appended last so that no existing vtable slot moves. Review round 1 on ai-dynamo#2335: - CorrelationScope pushes nothing for id 0, the projection of an invalid context, so requests whose context generation failed no longer share NVTX correlation id 0. - supportsTraceContext() gets a comment in backend_engine.h like its neighbours, and BackendGuide.md lists it as a fifth capability indicator. - The unsupported-backend warning now says it is logged once per backend and agent; docs/tracing.md matches and names the current correlation key. - The agent tests' log counter lowers the minimum log level while it counts, so the tests hold under any NIXL_LOG_LEVEL. Review round 2 on ai-dynamo#2335: - release/1.6.0 was cut with NIXL_PLUGIN_API_VERSION 2 but without supportsTraceContext(), so plugins built against it would load here and miss the new vtable slot. Bump to 3; the stale-version test now rejects 1.6.0's version. - Contain the failure injection to the trace context generator: the tracer carries the random-byte source its contexts are drawn from, and the generator owns the fallback to an untraced context and the per-tracer log-once. The getentropy interposer, and the agent-level test that needed it, are gone. - logOnce moves to tracing/log_once.h, shared by both degradation paths, and the needle-counting log sink moves to the shared test header, replacing the tracing test's own.
