What?

The GPU side of the CPU proxy, in two parts.

  1. Dispatch by execution mode. A prepared memory view now records which implementation runs it, and the
    device API routes every call on that view to that implementation:
    • nixl_device_exec_mode_t (UCX_DIRECT = 1, PROXY = 2) and memViewWrapper { execution_mode, backend_memview } in device_types.cuh. Zero is deliberately invalid, so an untagged handle can never
      select a backend by accident.
    • device_memview.{h,cpp} in device_utils: nixl::deviceMemViewAllocate / GetBackend / Free, the
      owning wrapper a backend hands out from prepMemView, and nixl::deviceViewHandle, the name for it.
    • device_dispatch.cuh: nixlPut, nixlAtomicAdd, nixlGetPtr and nixlGetXferStatus dispatch on the mode.
    • level_utils.cuh: laneId, isLeader, sync and broadcastStatus for the thread/warp/block/grid levels,
      shared by the dispatch layer and the implementations.
    • The UCX engine wraps its direct views as UCX_DIRECT; one prepMemViewImpl serves the local and remote
      overloads.
  2. The proxy arm. impl/proxy/device_proxy.cuh and device_proxy_ring.cuh: the GPU producer that turns a
    device API call on a PROXY view into a 64-byte ring command for the host runtime (utils: add the device proxy runtime and its worker threads [CPU Proxy part 3] #2223), and polls the
    ring's completion slot for its status.

Nothing creates a PROXY view yet; the UCX backend does that in part 6 (#2327). Existing users see no change:
every view is still a direct UCX view, and kernels are unchanged.

This PR carries production code only. Its tests, including the real-GPU ProxyDeviceApiTest suite, are in the
tests PR #2283, the last PR of the stack (on part 6, #2327).

Why?

The CPU proxy runs the same device API calls through a different implementation. Kernel code must not change
between the two, so the choice has to travel with the memory view, and the transfer status has to remember it
for polling.

How?

Dispatch

  • A put or atomic add dispatches on the destination view's mode: the destination is the view that names the
    peer.
  • On an accepted submission (NIXL_IN_PROG), the leader writes the mode into the transfer status's mode
    field (after the implementation's 60-byte payload), behind a barrier at every level, so a poll in the same
    kernel never reads it untagged. nixlGetXferStatus dispatches on that stored mode.
  • nixlGetPtr dispatches on the view's mode, and returns null for a mode that offers no direct pointer.
  • Optional compile-time mode. nixlPut, nixlAtomicAdd, nixlGpuGetXferStatus and nixlGetPtr take a mode
    template argument after the level, defaulting to DYNAMIC (the runtime selection above), e.g.
    nixlPut<nixl_gpu_level_t::WARP, nixl_device_exec_mode_t::PROXY>(...). A fixed mode compiles out the other
    implementation, the mode load, and the status tag with its barrier. It must match the backend's views (a
    mismatch is undefined, asserted in debug builds), and its status must be polled with the same mode. Fixing
    UCX_DIRECT without UCX's GPU device API is a compile error. For a warp-level put, atomic add, poll and
    get-pointer kernel, the optimized code is 2120 instructions with DYNAMIC, 1520 with UCX_DIRECT (-28%) and
    496 with PROXY (-77%).
  • The proxy arm needs only CUDA, so unlike the UCX arm it is always compiled in, with no capability gate.
  • The UCX plugin always links device_utils, which builds without CUDA; without a device implementation loaded,
    prepMemView returns NIXL_ERR_NOT_SUPPORTED. There is no compile-time guard.
  • Device-side submission and completion errors now reach the host in the integration tests instead of being
    dropped.

Producer

  • The GPU never dereferences a host view: a command carries the view tokens from utils: add the proxy memory-view manager [CPU Proxy part 2] #2226 and the element
    index/offset, and the worker resolves them.
  • A command goes to the ring of its (channel, peer). The producer claims a ticket, waits while the ring is full
    (reading a device-cached consumer index, refreshed from the published consumer index only when the ring looks
    full), writes the command, and publishes it with a system-scope release store of its op index. A runtime
    shutdown word turns a blocked producer into an error instead of a hang; the shutdown drain retires the ticket
    it gave up on.
  • Collective levels follow UCX: at warp and block level every thread returns the leader's submission and
    completion status. At grid level, which needs a cooperative launch, the call is a grid barrier and each thread
    polls the completion itself.
  • As in UCX's device API, handle and context invariants (a null or mismatched context, a peer outside the
    runtime, a missing ring) are asserts, not returned errors. Only states a running proxy can reach return a
    status: shutdown, a full ring (which waits), and failures reported on completion.
  • Status is a collapsed completion queue per ring. The host writes completion_status, then failed_idx (the
    first failed op), then completed_idx; a poll reads completed_idx before failed_idx. An op at or after the
    first failure reports that failure's status, an op up to completed_idx succeeded, and anything else is pending.
  • The protocol headers are installed with the GPU API. Each proxy worker makes the CUDA device its rings were
    allocated on current before it runs, so transport calls from worker threads target the right device.

Testing

Note: #2194

The device tests for this PR (in #2283) depend on #2194 ("test: make the device API tests actually run"). Without
it, gtest::hasCudaGpu() is compiled out in .cu test files, so every device API test reports "No CUDA-capable
GPU" and is skipped rather than run. The results above were produced with #2194's flag applied locally.

Commits

  • b50b773f device_api: tag a prepared memory view with the implementation that runs it
  • 183291b7 device_api: dispatch a transfer to the mode its memory view names
  • 31f7f403 device_api: add the GPU-side ring producer for the CPU proxy

  • 78a98cbd device_api: give every proxy thread the leader's submission status
  • cf9c92cd utils: name the failed proxy op before publishing its frontier
  • 1bdbfb8d utils: retire proxy tickets abandoned at shutdown
  • 03f006ae device_api: stop promising mixed direct and proxied views
  • 8251aa55 device_api: address the proxy device-code review

  • dcf2f55a PLUGIN/UCX: declare the memory-view helper in the private section
  • 4e2a4652 device_api: keep the execution mode in a named status field

Based on main 464c8638, with main merged in up to f2086f56 (#2230). Part 6 (#2327) is stacked on this PR, part 7
(#2328) and the tests PR #2283 on #2327.

Changes in this revision

  • New commit 4e2a4652, for review: xferStatusH is storage[60] plus a named exec_mode_t mode field
    instead of a tag in the last four bytes of storage. Still 64 bytes; backends keep the same 60-byte
    payload.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • GPU operations can now use proxy execution as well as direct UCX, including transfers, atomic updates, completion checks, and pointer lookup.
    • UCX memory views can be used with the GPU device API.
  • Bug Fixes
    • GPU transfer calls now report operation failures instead of always returning success.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — Copyright Checks · commit 7dfd5c8f

TL;DR: The Copyright Checks job failed because test/gtest/device_api/meson.build was modified in this PR (2026) but its SPDX copyright header still says 2025; update the header to 2025-2026.

Full analysis

Summary: .github/workflows/copyright-check.sh reported test/gtest/device_api/meson.build (copyright year 2025 < last modified 2026) and exited 1.

Root cause: The check script derives each file's last-modified year from git log -1 --pretty="%cs" and requires the SPDX copyright end-year to be >= that year (copyright-check.sh:61-76). Commit 7dfd5c8 ("test: exercise the CPU proxy from real GPU kernels", Tomer Davidor, 2026-09-03) edited test/gtest/device_api/meson.build — adding the proxy_device_api_test_sources block — but left line 1 of the header at Copyright (c) 2025, so end_year=2025 < last_modified=2026. This is a genuine code-hygiene violation in the PR, not CI flakiness; no other files failed.

Implicated commit: [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] — Tomer Davidor

File: test/gtest/device_api/meson.build:1

Suggested fix: Update the copyright line to span the range:

# SPDX-FileCopyrightText: Copyright (c) 2025-2026 NVIDIA CORPORATION & AFFILIATES. All rights reserved.

Then re-check the rest of the PR's touched files the same way before pushing — run .github/workflows/copyright-check.sh locally, since any other file edited in this branch whose header still ends at 2025 will fail identically.

Related: PR #2326 (branch cpu-proxy-4-gpu-producer); no existing issue found for this check.

🛡️ This comment had 1 potential secret(s) redacted (Hex High Entropy String). See request_id 983531a4-4114-4caf-a6f8-a8822b15e238 in the triage console for the audit trail.

The dispatch layer stored a transfer's execution mode in the last four bytes of the opaque status storage; make it an explicit mode field after a 60-byte storage, as suggested in review. The handle stays 64 bytes and backends keep the same 60-byte payload.

I think we can remove it. We added aliases for the old C-style names. We do not need aliases for new names and types.

This is a suboptimal use of a template variable. it should be smth like:

    if constexpr (mode == exec_mode_t::UCX_DIRECT) {
        return ucx::put();
    } else if constexpr (mode == exec_mode_t::PROXY) {
        return proxy::put();
    } else {
        if (runtime_mode == exec_mode_t::UCX_DIRECT) {
            return ucx::put();
        }
        assert(runtime_mode == exec_mode_t::PROXY);
        return proxy::put();

Done in 96a807f9 (#2463): a fixed mode dispatches with if constexpr, so the other backend isn't instantiated, and only DYNAMIC branches on the tag; the same for atomicAdd, getXferStatus and getPtr. In the DYNAMIC branch I kept the NIXL_ERR_INVALID_PARAM result (nullptr from getPtr) for an untagged view instead of the assert, since a zero tag means an invalid view, not a backend.

## What?

The UCX backend as the CPU proxy's transport, and the switch that turns
the proxy on:

- `nixlUcxEp::atomicAdd`: a post-mode remote `UCP_ATOMIC_OP_ADD`, for
the counters a receiver waits on to learn
  that data has landed (`ucx_utils.{h,cpp}`).
- `nixl::ucx::proxyEngine` (`ucx_proxy_engine.{h,cpp}`): the
`nixlUcxEngine` subclass that `create()` picks for
`device_proxy=true`. It owns a `nixl::proxyRuntime` (#2223) with a
`nixl::proxyTransport` (#2225) over the
engine's UCX workers, and hands out `PROXY` memory views (part 5)
instead of direct ones.
- Proxy threads may outnumber channels, up to one thread per (channel,
peer) ring, while each pass still makes
  one call per channel.
- The proxy transport and runtime are ready once constructed: no
`init()`/`shutdown()`, and
  `proxyRuntime::create()` returns a running runtime or throws.
- Tests: the backend-parameter table, and the existing single-write
device tests run in both modes. The
  real-UCX lifetime test is in the tests PR (#2283).

Direct mode is unchanged and remains the default: without
`device_proxy=true` the engine is main's.

## Why?

Parts 1 to 5 give a GPU a way to hand work to host threads, but nothing
posts that work to a network. This PR
makes UCX the transport, so a kernel written against the device API can
run over any UCX transport the host can
drive (for example where UCX's direct GPU API is unavailable), without
changes to the kernel.

## How?

**Transport** (`ucx_proxy_engine.cpp`)

- The engine's shared workers are partitioned one per (channel, peer)
ring, so each proxy thread progresses only
the UCX workers of the rings it owns, and a ring's operations are
ordered on one UCX worker.
- `submit` posts a PUT (`ucp_put_nbx`) or an atomic add. Before an
atomic, the transport fences the worker, so a
counter update is not visible before the PUTs issued ahead of it on that
ring.
- Request status, terminal release, per-ring progress and quiescence map
directly onto UCX requests and
`ucp_worker_progress`. A post-mode atomic completes inside
`ucp_atomic_op_nbx` and never yields a request, so
  only PUTs are tracked.
- `resolveDirectPtrs` fills a remote view's direct pointers with
`ucp_rkey_ptr` where the remote key allows
direct access, and leaves them null otherwise. It skips holes (the null
agent, or no metadata), which the
  memory-view manager marks unusable.

**Engine** (`nixl::ucx::proxyEngine`)

- Backend parameters: `device_proxy=true` enables the proxy;
`proxy_channel_count`, `proxy_thread_count`,
`proxy_max_peers`, `proxy_ring_depth` and `proxy_drain_timeout_ms` tune
it (parsed by `nixl::parseProxyConfig`).
Tuning without `device_proxy=true`, `num_threads` and the agent progress
thread are rejected. Without a loaded
device implementation (a build without CUDA), creating an engine with
`device_proxy=true` fails.
- `proxy_thread_count` defaults to the channel count and may go up to
one thread per ring: up to the channel
count each thread owns a block of whole channels, and beyond it each
channel's peers are strided over
thread_count / channel_count threads. Only counts that split the rings
evenly are accepted. Each thread gets
its span of channels and the peers it serves in them when the runtime is
built, so the proxy loop is the
  previous per-channel loop over a slice of peers.
- The constructor sizes the shared workers to one per ring (channels x
peers): a smaller `num_workers`, such as
the default of 1 that `getPluginParams()` seeds, is raised to that
count, and a larger one is rejected, since only
the proxy threads progress the workers. It runs with
`NIXL_THREAD_SYNC_RW`, since proxy threads call into UCX outside the
agent
lock, and sets `ucx_error_handling_mode=none`: under `peer`, UCX
disables every AMO protocol and the proxy's
atomics would complete as cancelled, so an explicit `peer` is rejected.
It then creates the runtime, which
starts its threads; the runtime is a member, so it stops its threads
before the base engine destroys the workers.
- `prepMemView` registers the descriptors with the runtime and wraps the
result as a `PROXY` view.
`releaseMemView` retires it: the runtime waits until every operation on
the view reaches a terminal status
and the owning UCX workers are quiescent, and only then frees it. A view
that was never published rolls back
  without a runtime drain.
- A failed peer's endpoint does not make release fatal, and a view the
runtime cannot retire logs a warning; a
  view that cannot be read is fatal.

**Notifications**: on main, the base engine's notification list relies
on the agent lock, which holds while
only agent calls progress its workers. In proxy mode every shared worker
is a ring worker, so a proxy thread
progresses worker 0 and runs the notification callback outside the agent
lock. `proxyEngine` overrides
`appendNotif` and `getNotifs` with its own mutex, so the regular engine
stays lock-free, and its `getNotifs` only
swaps the list: the proxy threads already progress every shared worker
on each pass, worker 0 with its
notifications and incoming connections included, so the application no
longer competes with them on the ring
workers.

**Build**: the UCX plugin always links `libnixl_device_proxy` and
`libdevice_utils` and builds the transport,
with no compile-time guard; neither library needs CUDA to build. CUDA is
still loaded at run time, through the
device operations library and UCX's own modules.

## Known limitations and follow-ups

To be fixed as follow-up work; none affects the tested configurations.

- **Connection fan-out.** Every UCX worker the engine creates connects
to every peer, as in direct mode, but in
proxy mode there are channels x peers workers and each peer is served by
only one of them, so each rank makes
about channels x peers x peers endpoints, and connection setup grows
with it. Keep `proxy_max_peers` at the
real peer count, as EP does. The fix is to connect only the worker that
serves each peer.
- **Software atomics on GPU memory.** If UCX cannot do a NIC atomic on
the counter's GPU memory (seen with a NIC
that is not PCIe-local to the GPU), it falls back to its software atomic
protocol, which performs the add with a
CPU instruction on the target and crashes the remote process. The
transport should detect that fallback at
  setup and fail with a clear error.
- **Unbounded quiesce.** `quiesce` waits for `ucp_worker_flush_nbx`,
which is bounded only by the transport's own
retry timeouts. When the peer above crashed (same host), release waited
indefinitely; the likely cause is a
shared-memory lane, which has no retry timeout, under
`ucx_error_handling_mode=none`, which has no keepalive.
The fix is an application-level deadline that reports the peer as
failed.
- **Proxy threads spin and are not bound to the GPU's NUMA node.**
Across ranks the threads must fit the
physical cores, and threads on the GPU's NUMA node are faster; the proxy
should bind its threads itself and
  warn on oversubscription.

## Testing

- L40S over RoCE, main `d1c6fb9e`: unit 191 pass; single-write device
tests 18/18 in direct and proxy mode;
UCX suites 90/90; the proxy cases at 4, 32 and 64 threads over 32
channels (local thread-count override, with
the dropped many-elements test added back locally) 12/12 each; #2283's
real-UCX lifetime test 3/3. Every
commit builds with `-Werror`, and so does the release build;
clang-format clean; PR size 387.
- NIXL EP's CI elastic tests with #2328 on top, on one 8x H100 node: all
six single-node plans, direct and
  proxy, NVLink and RDMA only, 88/88.
- `ProxyConfigTest`: parameter parsing, thread splits, and that the
threads' shares cover every ring once.
- Proxy unit, GPU and lifetime tests: #2283. NIXL EP, with performance:
#2328.

## Changes in this revision

For hbadihi's and rakhmets's reviews; every change is folded into the
commit it belongs to.

- The proxy engine is `nixl::ucx::proxyEngine` (`2f49ebcf`). Its
transport reads the memory handle through
`getMem()`, so the friend declaration is gone and `nixlUcxEp::write()`
takes the handle as const.
- `proxyRuntime::create()` builds the runtime and starts its workers,
and throws on any failure; `startWorkers()`
  and the runtime's stopped state are gone (`f956bf6b`).
- `proxyRuntime::releaseMemView()` returns nothing and warns on failure,
and the engine no longer treats a
  failed release as fatal (`f956bf6b`, `2f49ebcf`).
- The runtime, not the memory-view manager, maps each remote agent to a
peer and checks `proxy_max_peers`
  (`54c54d8b`).
- The transport frees a completed request with `ucp_request_free()`
directly (`2a3a1b5d`).
- Removed: `deviceChannelViews()`, `proxyChannel::deallocate()`, the
transport header's `proxy_config.h`
include, a few comments, and the `ManyElementsOnePeerPut` test commit,
which nixlbench covers (#2328).
- The `num_threads` error now points to `proxy_thread_count`.
- For ColinNV's comments on #2328, on this PR's code: the peer check is
spelled out, the peer list is reserved,
  and its copy size follows the element type (`54c54d8b`).
- Our own change: a `num_workers` below channels x peers, such as the
default of 1 from `getPluginParams()`, is
raised to that count instead of rejected, so applications no longer
erase it (#2328 drops its erases); a larger
one is still rejected, since nothing but the proxy threads would
progress the extra workers (`5b15101d`,
  `2f49ebcf`).

Previous revisions:

- Rebased on main at `d1c6fb9e`, which includes #2423 (no garbage error
handler under
  `ucx_error_handling_mode=none`) and #2412.
- For iyastreb's review: the proxy is a separate `nixlUcxProxyEngine`
that `create()` picks (`d72887b8`); the base
engine is main's code apart from that. The notification lock moved into
the proxy engine, whose `getNotifs`
no longer progresses the workers, which also removes `getNotifs` stalls
under host polling.
- For rakhmets's review: the proxy engine sets up the runtime in its
constructor and tears it down in its
destructor (`d72887b8`); the transport and runtime are ready once
constructed, and `proxyRuntime::create()`
  returns a `unique_ptr` (`0efb4f4c`).
- For Colin's review on #2328: `ucx_error_handling_mode` defaults to
`none` with the proxy and `peer` is rejected
  (`b240e1e6`), and `proxyTransport` is no longer copyable (`0efb4f4c`).
- Proxy threads up to one per (channel, peer) ring, even splits only
(`10fa8327`): each thread gets a span of
  channels and a peer slice, so the loop keeps one call per channel.
- The base engine's memory-view comment now says that a mode fixed at
compile time is checked against the
  handle's tag.
- Rebased on main at `d59f99c3` now that #2326 has merged; the PR shows
only its own 12 commits.
- Review fixes folded into their commits: no stray blank lines in the
engine commit (`d56d2688`), and
  `nixlUcxEp::atomicAdd` is const (`b0e23d91`).
- `f1e597b5` picks a proxy ring by the element's remote agent instead of
its index in the view, and
  `93eee926` puts to more elements of one peer than `proxy_max_peers`.

- Merged #2326's named status `mode` field (`57311ecc`); no code changes
here.
- Rebased on #2326's merge of main (`d52c5c36`, #2230's Device API
comments); no code changes.
- New commit `5b2a988b`, for CodeRabbit's review:
`discardUnpublishedMemView` is removed. When the engine fails to
allocate a
view's device wrapper, it rolls the proxy view back with the regular
`releaseMemView`, so the runtime API is
prepare and release only. The drain this adds runs only on that
allocation-failure path.
- New commit `53dcc156`, for CodeRabbit's review: the proxy helpers are
declared in the engine's existing
private section (with #2326's `dcf2f55a`, the engine's public interface
is unchanged from main), and the
transport's opcode switch has no `default`, so a new opcode triggers a
compiler warning.
- Rebased on #2326's compile-time mode argument (`dc0959c2`); new commit
`4878665d` adds the single-write case
  with the mode fixed. No other changes.
- Rebased on #2326's review fixes (`8251aa55`). Following them, the
transport and engine commits no longer
use `HAVE_NIXL_DEVICE_API`: the plugin always builds the transport and
links the proxy library, and the
build-time rejection of proxy parameters without CUDA is gone (engine
creation fails instead). The engine
  uses the `nixl::deviceMemView*` names.
- Stacked directly on #2326 instead of on the tests PR #2283. The two
test `meson.build` changes are made
against main, and `proxy_lifetime` and
`UnpublishedRollbackDoesNotDrainLiveTraffic` moved to #2283. No code
  changes.

- Rebased on main at `d790ad4f`; no code changes.
- Restacked after the reorder that makes #2283 the post-feature tests
PR: this PR now sits on #2283 (which sits
on #2326), and `RetirementSelectsTheOwningDevice` moved to #2283.
Includes #2326's review fixes; no code
  changes here.
- No longer carries #2325's commit.
- Rebased on #2283's test simplification; no code changes.

- Carries #2325's reworked single commit as a plain commit instead of
merging the old two-commit
  branch; the EP release reordering is no longer part of it.
- The engine keeps the device allocator it built the runtime with, and
passes it to
  `proxyRuntime::create` and to the device memview wrappers.
- `ProxyConfigTest` covers the new `proxy_drain_timeout_ms` parameter.
- Rebased on #2223's review fixes; no code changes.
- Rebased on main at `40b38570` after #2226 merged.
- `proxy_lifetime` now depends on `ucx_dep`, so it builds against the
configured UCX instead of
whatever UCX headers are on the default include path (an incomplete
system UCX broke the build).
- Follows #2226's review renames: the engine releases a view through
  `proxyRuntime::releaseMemView`, and `discardUnpublishedMemView` takes
  `proxy_view_handle_t`.
- The transport's submit debug log prints only the fields an operation
uses: an atomic
  add has no source, so it logs its destination address and value.

…y part 7] (#2328)

## What?

NIXL EP and nixlbench can run over the CPU proxy (#2327):

- `NIXL_EP_DEVICE_MODE=proxy` runs EP over the proxy; `direct`, the
default, keeps UCX's direct GPU Device API
  path. The kernels are the same in both modes.
- `nixlbench --use_device_api --device_mode=proxy` does the same for
nixlbench; `direct` is the default.

## Why?

UCX's direct device API path needs GPU-initiated RDMA, which not every
NIC, driver or transport supports. The CPU
proxy (#2327) runs the same kernels without it. This PR lets EP and
nixlbench use it: with 8 channels and 8 threads,
EP over the network matches direct's dispatch + combine bandwidth on
H100 and GB200 and reaches 88-104% on GB300.

## How?

**EP** (`Buffer::_nixl_agent_init()`, `nixl_ep.cpp`):

- `NIXL_EP_DEVICE_MODE` must be `direct` or `proxy`; anything else
throws.
- `NIXL_EP_NUM_CHANNELS` (default 4) sets the channel count in either
mode: `ucx_num_device_channels` in direct
mode, `proxy_channel_count` in proxy mode. Proxy mode also passes
`device_proxy=true`, `proxy_thread_count`
(`NIXL_EP_PROXY_THREADS`, default: the channel count) and
`proxy_max_peers` (`max_num_ranks`). The backend
  validates the counts and sizes its workers.
- It also sets `ucx_num_device_channels=1` and
`engine_config=FENCE_MODE=ep_based`, UCX's cheaper way to order
each atomic add after the puts before it, and turns the agent's progress
thread off: the proxy threads
  progress UCX.
- Both modes use `ucx_error_handling_mode=none`, which the proxy
requires, and `num_workers=1`, which the proxy
  raises to its ring count. Direct mode is otherwise unchanged.
- `README.md` lists the three variables.

**nixlbench** (`utils.{h,cpp}`, `nixl_worker.cpp`): proxy mode creates
the backend with `device_proxy=true`,
one proxy channel per device channel, one peer,
`ucx_error_handling_mode=none` and
`engine_config=FENCE_MODE=ep_based`, and leaves the worker count to the
backend. `--device_proxy_threads`
sets `proxy_thread_count` (0: one per channel). Proxy mode turns off
`--enable_pt` with a warning and rejects `--progress_threads`. The
kernel is unchanged.

## Performance

### Setup

One node at a time, UCX 1.23, release builds:

| Node | GPUs | CPUs | NICs, one per GPU |
|---|---|---|---|
| H100 | 8x H100, 80 GB | 2x 32-core x86 | 8x 400 Gb/s NDR InfiniBand |
| GB200 | 4x B200 | 2x 72-core Grace | 4x 400 Gb/s NDR InfiniBand
(ConnectX-7) |
| GB300 | 4x B300 | 2x 72-core Grace | 4x 200 Gb/s RoCE (ConnectX-8
virtual functions) |

The proxy has two settings: channels, the command queues that GPU
kernels write to, and threads, the CPU threads
that serve them. EP's default is 4 channels and 4 threads.

**EP**: each point is one `elastic.py` run with a single phase of all
its GPUs (steady state, no expansion). The
test harness pins each rank to its GPU's NUMA node (CPU affinity and
memory). A proxy run with 4 GPUs, 8 channels
and 8 threads, network only:

```bash
NIXL_EP_DEVICE_MODE=proxy NIXL_EP_NUM_CHANNELS=8 NIXL_EP_PROXY_THREADS=8 \
python3 examples/device/ep/tests/elastic/elastic.py --plan noexp_4.json --num-processes 4 \
    --num-tokens 128 --hidden-dim 7168 --num-topk 8 --num-experts-per-rank 64 --disable-ll-nvlink
```

- `noexp_N.json` is `[[0, 1, ..., N-1]]`, and `--num-experts-per-rank`
is 256 / N (256 experts in total).
- Direct runs set `NIXL_EP_DEVICE_MODE=direct`; NVLink runs drop
`--disable-ll-nvlink`.
- H100 and GB200 runs also pass `--kineto`.

UCX environment, the same for direct and proxy unless noted, with
`CUDA_DEVICE_ORDER=PCI_BUS_ID`:

| Variable | H100 | GB200 | GB300 |
|---|---|---|---|
| `UCX_TLS` | `all`; direct over NVLink: `^rc_gda` | `all` | `all` |
| `UCX_NET_DEVICES` | `all` | the 4 GPU NICs and their `cuda0-` devices:
`mlx5_0:1,mlx5_1:1,mlx5_3:1,mlx5_4:1,cuda0-mlx5_0:1,...` | the 4 RoCE
rails and their `cuda0-` devices:
`rdma_vf_rail0:1,...,cuda0-rdma_vf_rail0:1,...` |
| `UCX_MAX_RMA_RAILS` | `1` | `1` | `1` |
| `UCX_IB_GID_INDEX` | default | default | `3` (RoCE v2) |
| `UCX_IB_GDA_RETAIN_INACTIVE_CTX` | `yes` | `yes` | `yes` |

On H100, direct mode needs `UCX_TLS=^rc_gda` to use NVLink at all;
otherwise it sends same-node traffic over the
NIC. The proxy is not affected.

**Metric**: dispatch + combine bandwidth in GB/s per GPU, as
`elastic.py` reports it, averaged over GPUs. Each
proxy run is paired with a direct run in the same round, and each
percentage is the median of proxy / direct over
3 rounds.

- **8 channels and 8 threads** is the best setting that works on every
node; the default stays 4 and 4. The
16-thread column comes from a separate set of paired runs. Proxy threads
spin, so
all the threads on a NUMA node must fit its cores: on H100, 4 GPUs share
32 cores, and 16 threads per GPU is
too many. Other settings, at 4 GPUs (and 8 on H100): 2 channels and 2
threads reach 48-87% of direct, 4 channels
  and 8 threads 82-99%, 16 channels and 16 threads 2-79%.
- **NVLink:** the proxy is within 2% of direct on every node, at 196-366
GB/s.
- **Smaller transfers:** the proxy pays a fixed cost per operation, so
it loses the most when there is little
data per operation. With 8 channels and 8 threads, across 16 to 256
tokens per GPU and 2, 4 or 8 experts per
token, it reaches this share of direct; the low ends are mostly at 16
tokens and 2 experts:

  | Node | 2 GPUs | 4 GPUs | 8 GPUs |
  |---|---|---|---|
  | H100 | 100-121% | 74-114% | 67-100% |
  | GB200 | 91-123% | 65-99% | |
  | GB300 | 82-109% | 55-91% | |

A smaller hidden size has the same effect: at 2048 instead of 7168, 55%
on H100 with 8 GPUs, 81% on GB200 and
  72% on GB300; at 8192, 92-106%.
- **Pinning:** without it, the default setting reaches 45% of direct
with 4 GPUs on H100 (99% pinned), 88% with 8
  (95%), 79% on GB200 (86%) and 76% on GB300 (81%).
- **Connection setup** grows with channels times peers, since every
proxy worker connects to every peer. A
  follow-up connects only the worker that serves each peer.

The EP numbers were measured on the previous revision; this revision
changes no data path, and nixlbench and the
H100 CI tests below were re-run on it.

### nixlbench

GPU0 to GPU1 over each GPU's local NIC, VRAM to VRAM. Each GPU's process
runs, with `<nic>` its PCIe-local NIC:

```bash
UCX_TLS=^cuda_ipc UCX_MAX_HCA_PER_GPU=inf UCX_IB_GDA_RETAIN_INACTIVE_CTX=yes \
UCX_NET_DEVICES=<nic>:1,cuda0-<nic>:1 CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES=<0 or 1> \
nixlbench --runtime_type ASIO --backend UCX --use_device_api --initiator_seg_type VRAM --target_seg_type VRAM \
    --num_iter 1024 --warmup_iter 128 --start_batch_size 1 --max_batch_size 4 \
    --start_block_size 4096 --max_block_size 1048576 \
    --num_threads <GPU threads> --device_mode proxy --device_channel_num <channels> --device_proxy_threads <threads>
```

Small transfers use `--start_block_size 8 --max_block_size 4096`, and
direct runs `--device_mode direct --enable_pt`.
Proxy throughput as a share of direct:

| Transfer | GPU threads | Proxy setting | H100 | GB200 | GB300 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 MiB, peak | 4-256 | 1 channel, 1 thread | same peak, 48.4 GB/s |
same peak, 48.4 GB/s | same peak, 57.3 GB/s |
| 64 KiB, 1-4 buffers per transfer | 16-32 | 1 channel, 1 thread |
71-96% | 75-96% | 65-79% |
| 8 B to 4 KiB, 1 buffer per transfer | 1, 32 or 256 | 1, 32 or 8
channels, one thread per channel | 67-89% | 93-106% | 80-96% |

At 64 KiB the proxy gets closer to direct as more buffers go into each
transfer. Direct runs use
`--device_channel_num 0` for the transfer sweeps and the same channel
counts as the proxy for small transfers.

## Testing

- NIXL EP's CI elastic tests, as `.gitlab/test_ep.sh` runs them:
`--num-processes 4 --num-tokens 256
--num-experts-per-rank 32 --num-topk 8 --timeout-ms 10000
--validate-phase-failures`, with and without
`--disable-ll-nvlink` (`UCX_TLS=^rc_gda` with NVLink), direct and proxy:
  - H100: all six single-node plans, 88/88 on this revision.
- GB200 and GB300: the three plans that fit 4 GPUs, 60/60 each, on an
earlier revision.
- Every rank ends every phase, and the plans that kill ranks detect the
failures.
- Every EP run passes `elastic.py`'s dispatch and combine checks before
it benchmarks; all 1,056 performance
  runs passed.
- nixlbench: every direct and proxy configuration completes on all three
nodes (H100 on this revision).
- With `NIXL_EP_NUM_CHANNELS=8 NIXL_EP_PROXY_THREADS=2`, every rank's
proxy starts with 8 channels and 2 threads,
  as the backend logs it.
- The UCX backend's tests: #2327.

## Commits

- `19ab5cd9` nixl_ep: run the expert-parallel example over the CPU proxy
- `2ae2244e` nixlbench: run the device API over the CPU proxy

## Changes in this revision

- Rebased on main (`98a17bb1`) after #2327 merged; the rebase changes no
code.
- README: the GPU Device API section lists only the three variables,
right after Features.
- nixlbench: proxy mode passes `engine_config=FENCE_MODE=ep_based`, as
EP does; `--device_proxy_threads` is
  unsigned; `--device_channel_num`'s help no longer says UCX.
- An EP comment no longer says UCX.

<details><summary>Previous revisions</summary>

- EP: `NIXL_EP_NUM_CHANNELS` sets the channel count in either mode, so
`NIXL_EP_PROXY_CHANNELS` is gone, and
`NIXL_EP_PROXY_WORKER_COUNT` is now `NIXL_EP_PROXY_THREADS`, matching
`proxy_thread_count` and nixlbench's
`--device_proxy_threads`. `num_workers=1` and error mode `none` are set
the same way in both modes, and the mode
  parsing is shorter.
- The two nixl_ep commits are now one.
- README: there is no fallback when the direct path is unavailable; EP
fails when it prepares its
  memory views.
- nixlbench prints one device API configuration line for both modes.
- Rebased on #2327's review revision (`f956bf6b`); this PR was its own
three commits on top, without merges.
- New commit: nixlbench runs its device API benchmark over the proxy.
- EP and nixlbench no longer erase `num_workers`: the backend now raises
the default to one UCX worker per
  channel and peer.
- README: documents the faster 8-channel, 8-thread setting, and its
disconnect order now matches the code; a
  stale `nixl_ep.cpp` comment is fixed.
- No longer depends on #2325.
- Performance is reported as dispatch + combine bandwidth, on H100,
GB200 and GB300 nodes.
- Merged #2327 with #2326's named status `mode` field (`3e33263c`); no
code changes here.
- Rebased on #2327, after #2326's merge of main (`d52c5c36`); no code
changes.
- New commit `903e15e8`, for CodeRabbit's review: EP passes
`NIXL_EP_PROXY_CHANNELS` (or `NIXL_EP_NUM_CHANNELS`) and
`NIXL_EP_PROXY_WORKER_COUNT` to the backend as given, only in proxy
mode, instead of parsing them with
`std::stoul`. The backend rejects malformed, negative, out-of-range and
zero counts, and direct mode no
longer reads them. Built on a 2x H100 NVL node: the proxy lifecycle
passes, and `NIXL_EP_PROXY_CHANNELS=abc`
and `NIXL_EP_PROXY_WORKER_COUNT=-1` fail backend creation with the
parameter named in the error.
- Rebased on #2326's and #2327's declaration moves; no code changes.
- Rebased on #2326's compile-time mode argument and #2327's matching
test; no code changes. EP keeps runtime
  mode selection.
- Rebased on #2326's review fixes and the matching #2327 changes; no
code changes.
- Rebased on part 6 (#2327), now stacked directly on part 5 (#2326); no
code changes.
- Rebased on #2283's test simplification; no code changes.
- Rebased on the drain deadline (#2223), the explicit device allocator
(#2326, #2327) and #2325's
  reworked commit; no code changes.
- Rebased on #2223's review fixes; no code changes.
- Rebased on main at `40b38570` after #2226 merged; no code changes.
- Rebased on the review changes in #2226 to #2327; no code changes.
