Summary

contrib/Dockerfile, contrib/Dockerfile.manylinux and benchmark/nixlbench/contrib/Dockerfile clone their third-party dependencies from github.com anonymously. github.com intermittently answers an anonymous clone with an HTTP 401 (www-authenticate: Basic realm="GitHub"). With no credential git tries to prompt, finds no TTY, and fails the image build:

fatal: could not read Username for 'https://github.com': No such device or address

That message refers to the missing terminal, not to DNS or connectivity. Given a credential, git answers the 401 and the clone succeeds.

Second of three smaller PRs replacing #2263. Note this makes a 401 survivable; it does not reduce anonymous traffic, since git only sends credentials after a 401.

Changes

  • Every RUN that clones from github.com mounts an optional build secret, --mount=type=secret,id=ghconfig,target=/root/.gitconfig, holding http.https://github.com/.extraheader = AUTHORIZATION: basic <base64 user:token>, so every github.com request is authenticated. Includes the $UCX_REPO clones. Without the secret the clone is anonymous, as today. ARG GIT_TERMINAL_PROMPT=0 alongside — an ARG, so it does not persist into the shipped images.
  • extraheader rather than a URL rewrite or netrc: the token is sent proactively, never appears in a URL or on git-remote-https's argv, and needs no percent-encoding. The flip side: an invalid token fails every github.com clone in these jobs instead of falling back to anonymous.
  • contrib/build-container.sh and benchmark/nixlbench/contrib/build.sh: new DOCKER_BUILD_EXTRA_ARGS, a generic passthrough appended to their docker build command. Empty by default, so the command is unchanged for everyone else; listed in --help.
  • build-container.sh defaults DOCKER_BUILDKIT=1 (overridable). RUN --mount is rejected by Docker's legacy builder, which pre-23 Docker still uses by default; podman ignores the variable. nixlbench/contrib/build.sh already required BuildKit through --build-context.
  • build-container-pr-matrix.yaml, build-container-matrix.yaml, build-wheel-nightly-matrix.yaml: the setup step binds svc-nixl-github-read-only-token and calls write_github_gitconfig /tmp/ghconfig (new, .ci/scripts/common.sh; tracing off, mode 600); each build step sets DOCKER_BUILD_EXTRA_ARGS="--secret id=ghconfig,src=/tmp/ghconfig"; the agent-side clones (ucx-src, nightly nixl-src) use the same file via git -c include.path=/tmp/ghconfig, leaving existing global config intact.
  • build-wheel-matrix.yaml is unchanged: --wheel-base-image skips the wheel_base stage that holds the manylinux clones. That base and Dockerfile.base are built by ci-demo and come in the third PR.
  • .ci/docs/ci-overview.md updated.

With the variable unset, build-container.sh produces exactly the same docker build command as main. The config writes were checked under sh -xe (Jenkins' default) and inside the set +x -v block: correct content, mode 600, token absent from the output. The secret mount itself was verified on podman 5.7.1 against Ubuntu 22.04 / git 2.34.1 in the earlier investigation.

Credential and exposure

svc-nixl-github-read-only-token is a fine-grained token with read-only access to public repositories and no other permissions. PR builds run PR-controlled Dockerfiles and scripts with it available — a PR can cat the mounted config — so it must not carry write scopes, and it doesn't need any: the clones are public and the token only has to answer GitHub's 401. PR CI starts only after an authorized maintainer comments /build (blossom-ci.yml: the comment must be exactly /build, and the Authorization job must accept the commenter).

Builder behaviour without the secret

A RUN --mount=type=secret whose secret is not passed, tested with the same mount line:

Builder no --secret empty secret
podman 4.4.4 / 4.9.4 / 5.0.3 / 5.7.1 builds, target absent builds, empty file
Docker 29.1.3 BuildKit builds, target absent builds, empty file
Docker legacy builder (DOCKER_BUILDKIT=0) fails: the --mount option requires BuildKit same

No # syntax= line: the legacy builder ignores it, so it would not help that case, and under BuildKit it would pull the frontend image from Docker Hub on every build. Built-in frontends since Docker 20.10 support secret mounts.

Verified in CI with a temporary probe (since dropped) in the nixl-ci-build-container-pr nixl build: the secret reached the build, a public clone succeeded with the header sent, and nonexistent repos under both abseil and ai-dynamo returned repository ... not found — the token is valid, used, and not blocked by either org.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep · commit 8507211c

TL;DR: The Build Docker stage for the EP image failed at Dockerfile step 35/38 because the BUILD_VLLM_ELASTIC_TEST block resolves VLLM_REF with an unauthenticated call to api.github.com/repos/vllm-project/vllm/releases/latest, which returned HTTP Error 403: rate limit exceeded; pin VLLM_REF or pass a GitHub token into that request.

Full analysis

Summary: nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep #1408 — the aarch64 Build Docker branch of the Parallel stage aborted: Error: building at STEP "RUN if [ "${BUILD_VLLM_ELASTIC_TEST}" = "true" ]; ...": exit status 1.

Root cause: Everything up to step 34 succeeded (Mooncake, azure-sdk-for-cpp, gtest-parallel all built and installed). At step 35/38 the image build determines the vLLM release tag with an inline Python one-liner:

urllib.request.Request("https://api.github.com/repos/vllm-project/vllm/releases/latest",
    headers={"Accept": "application/vnd.github+json", "User-Agent": "nixl-ci"})

No Authorization header is set, so the request is subject to GitHub's unauthenticated 60-req/hour-per-IP quota. The shared CI egress IP was over quota and GitHub answered:

urllib.error.HTTPError: HTTP Error 403: rate limit exceeded
subprocess exited with status 1

VLLM_REF never got set, the && chain short-circuited and buildah failed the layer. This is an external-dependency/authentication defect, not a hang (the log is continuously active; the largest gap is the ~95 s vLLM/uv layer, well under the stage budget) and not a code regression in NIXL itself — note the sibling Build Docker branch (stage 55, no EP vLLM layer) passed in 118 s. Ironically the branch under test, ci/dockerfile-github-auth (PR #2310), is the work to add GitHub auth to Dockerfile network access — this call site was evidently missed.

Implicated commit: c984ce6 — lishapira, "CI: add vLLM + NIXL EP test to the EP CI job (#2154)" (introduced the unauthenticated release-lookup step); .gitlab/build.sh/dockerfile area last touched by 6d92952 (Fergus) and [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] (NirWolfer).

File: EP CI Dockerfile under .ci/dockerfiles/ — the RUN at step 35/38 guarded by BUILD_VLLM_ELASTIC_TEST, in the VLLM_REF="$(python3 -c '... api.github.com/repos/vllm-project/vllm/releases/latest ...')" sub-shell.

Suggested fix: Three changes, in order of value:

  1. Don't call the GitHub API at build time by default. Pin ARG VLLM_REF=<vX.Y.Z> in the Dockerfile / job config so the lookup is skipped entirely; bump it deliberately like the other pinned deps (UCX, DOCA, libfabric). This removes a network SPOF from every EP image build.
  2. If auto-latest must stay, authenticate it. Since PR ci: authenticate the Dockerfiles' github.com clones in CI #2310 is already plumbing GitHub credentials into the Dockerfile, reuse that path here: mount the token as a BuildKit/buildah secret (--mount=type=secret,id=gh_token) and add headers={"Authorization": "Bearer " + token, ...}. Authenticated requests get 5000 req/hr, which this CI will never exhaust. Do not pass it via ARG/ENV — that bakes it into image history.
  3. Fail loudly and retry. Wrap the lookup in a small retry-with-backoff and fall back to a known-good pinned tag, so a transient 403/timeout degrades instead of killing a ~32-minute build. Same treatment PR CI: retry git fetches and trim gRPC submodules in dependency builds #2291 applies to git fetches.

Related: PR #2310 (this build's branch, ci/dockerfile-github-auth); PR #2263 "ci: authenticate third-party github.com clones" — same class of problem, should cover this call site; PR #2300 "nixl_ep: Test vLLM Elastic EP without patching vLLM" (touches this same Dockerfile block); PR #2291 "CI: retry git fetches and trim gRPC submodules in dependency builds"; original PR #2154 that added the step.

🛡️ This comment had 1 potential secret(s) redacted (Hex High Entropy String). See request_id ffe35142-756e-4abe-b29b-3485534d1f01 in the triage console for the audit trail.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-non-gpu · commit 0b1a8093

TL;DR: The ucx_tracing_no_pt/TestTransferTracing.NvtxNotifications/0 gtest failed because, with the progress thread disabled, verifyNotifs() only polls the receiving agent, so the sender's UCX worker is never progressed and the 4 active-message notifications are never delivered (0 received vs 4 expected) — it is a test-harness bug/flake unrelated to the Dockerfile-auth commit under test.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage 599 ("Test CPP", one of 6 parallel matrix legs) failed on gtest-parallel test 248/260: ucx_tracing_no_pt/TestTransferTracing.NvtxNotifications/0, exit code 42 after 101 s.

Root cause: From the stage log:

../test/gtest/test_transfer.cpp:335: Failure
Expected equality of these values:
  notif_list.size()  Which is: 0
  expected_count     Which is: 4
E0930 14:53:42 ucx_utils.cpp:210] UCX AM send failed with status -16 (Request canceled) (x4)

The 101 s runtime is not a hang or a wall-clock kill — it is exactly the test's own retry budget (retry_count = 10000 × retry_timeout = 10 ms = 100 s, test/gtest/test_transfer.cpp:500-501) being spent in verifyNotifs().

The *_no_pt instantiations run with cfg.useProgThread = false (test_transfer.cpp:110, NIXL_INSTANTIATE_TEST(ucx_tracing_no_pt, TestTransferTracing, "UCX", false, 2, 0, "") at line 881), so UCX only makes progress when the test calls getNotifs(). In doNotificationTest() both sides are progressed, but only inside the send loop (from.getNotifs() / to.getNotifs(), lines 362-365) — here just 4 iterations. After the threads join, verifyNotifs() (lines 324-332) polls only the receiving agent (agent.getNotifs()); the sender's worker is never progressed again. The four genNotif active messages therefore stay queued on agent_0's worker for the whole 100 s window, arrive nowhere, and are cancelled at agent teardown — which is exactly the "Request canceled" errors, and those in turn trip the nixl_test_t "fail on unexpected error/warning" rule (problem count 4), yielding exit code 42.

This is a latent race in the no-progress-thread notification tests: the high-repeat variants (NotificationOnly, 100×4) mask it because the in-loop polling gives the sender hundreds of progress calls, while NvtxNotifications uses only repeat=4, num_threads=1. Corroborating evidence that it is a flake and not the commit: the other five parallel "Test CPP" legs of build #3262 ran the identical test and passed, and the commit under test (0b1a8093, branch ci/dockerfile-github-auth, PR #2310) touches Docker/CI auth only, not UCX or the gtest harness.

Implicated commit: Not the triggering commit. The fragile pattern comes from the tracing test additions by e-eygin — 471a64e9 ("tracing: NVTX completeness + cross-thread correlation", #1852) added NvtxNotifications and the ucx_tracing_no_pt instantiation; df3acf40 (#2137) last touched this file. The underlying single-sided polling in verifyNotifs predates both.

File: test/gtest/test_transfer.cpp:318-340 (verifyNotifs, assertion at line 335); instantiation at test/gtest/test_transfer.cpp:881; retry budget at lines 500-501.

Suggested fix: Make verifyNotifs() progress both agents while polling, as NvtxDemoWalkthrough already does deliberately (lines 860-873, whose comment notes that an undrained AM logs a cancel warning at teardown):

  • Pass the sending agent into verifyNotifs(nixlAgent &from, nixlAgent &to, ...) and, inside the retry loop, call from.getNotifs(notif_map) in addition to to.getNotifs(notif_map) when !isProgressThreadEnabled().
  • Apply the same change to the doTransfer() completion loop (line 432-434), which likewise progresses only to.
  • While there, drop the 100 s worst case: a 10 000-iteration × 10 ms budget turns a deterministic harness bug into a two-minute CI stall. Bounding it to a few seconds for the notification path would surface this class of bug immediately.

Re-running build #3262 will very likely pass, but the test should be fixed rather than retried.

Related: PR #2310 (the branch under test, unrelated to the failure); test/gtest/test_transfer.cpp history — #1852 (471a64e9), #2137 (df3acf40), and #1288 (c7e97a41, "Fail on unexpected error or warning log", which converts the cancelled-AM warnings into the exit-code-42 failure). No existing issue tracking this flake was found.

The token is exposed to PR-controlled code.

build-container-pr-matrix.yaml builds the PR's own Dockerfile and scripts with the secret available. Anyone who can trigger PR CI can add RUN --mount=type=secret,id=ghconfig cat /root/.gitconfig, or just cat /tmp/ghconfig in a script.
Please confirm two things. The svc-nixl-github-token PAT should be read-only with no write scopes, ideally a fine-grained token limited to public repos. PR CI should also be gated for external contributors, for example behind maintainer approval.
Given the stated goal (surviving anonymous 401s), a no-scope token is enough. Please say so in the PR.

Check the behaviour when the secret is absent, and on legacy builders.

The PR says an unsupplied secret gives an empty mount. That is BuildKit semantics.
The PR only reports verifying the supplied-secret case on podman 5.7.1. Please also test a plain podman build (buildah) and a Docker build with no --secret. Buildah behaviour on a missing non-required secret has varied by version.
The legacy builder (DOCKER_BUILDKIT=0) rejects --mount outright. The PR says local and external builds are unchanged, which is no longer true for them. Either document "BuildKit required" or add a # syntax=docker/dockerfile:1 line if it is missing.

@dpressle thanks — all three points held up. Addressed in the current revision:

Token exposure. Agreed: PR builds run PR-controlled Dockerfiles and scripts with the credential available, and the old svc-nixl-github-token had write access (it also posts commit statuses). Switched to a new svc-nixl-github-read-only-token, a fine-grained token with read-only access to public repositories and no other permissions. As you say, that is all it needs to answer the 401s; the PR description now says so. Gating: PR CI only starts when the comment is exactly /build and Blossom's Authorization job accepts the commenter (blossom-ci.yml), so external contributors can't trigger it themselves. The same token replaces the old one in #2313; the repository checkout from the already-merged #2309 will get it in a follow-up.

Behaviour without the secret. Tested the mount line with no --secret and with an empty one:

Builder no --secret empty secret
podman 4.4.4 / 4.9.4 / 5.0.3 / 5.7.1 builds, target absent builds, empty file
Docker 29.1.3 BuildKit builds, target absent builds, empty file
Docker legacy builder fails: the --mount option requires BuildKit same

You're right that "empty mount" was BuildKit-style wording — the target is simply absent when no secret is passed. Corrected.

Legacy builder. Also right: "local and external builds are unchanged" was false for DOCKER_BUILDKIT=0. build-container.sh now defaults DOCKER_BUILDKIT=1 (overridable), which covers pre-23 Docker, where the legacy builder is still the default; podman ignores it. nixlbench/contrib/build.sh already required BuildKit via --build-context. The requirement is documented in the Dockerfiles and ci-overview.md. I didn't add # syntax=docker/dockerfile:1: the legacy builder ignores it, so it wouldn't help that case, and under BuildKit it would pull the frontend image from Docker Hub on each build; the built-in frontend since Docker 20.10 already supports secret mounts.

The top commit is a temporary probe that forces a 401 so git must use the credential — it confirms the new token is accepted (including under ai-dynamo) and will be dropped before merge.

contrib/Dockerfile, contrib/Dockerfile.manylinux and nixlbench's Dockerfile clone
their third-party dependencies anonymously. github.com intermittently answers an
anonymous clone with an HTTP 401; with no credential git tries to prompt, finds
no TTY, and fails the build as "could not read Username".

Every cloning RUN now mounts an optional "ghconfig" build secret at
/root/.gitconfig holding an http.extraheader that authenticates every github.com
request. Unsupplied, the target is absent and the clone is anonymous as before.
GIT_TERMINAL_PROMPT=0 is an ARG, so it does not persist into the shipped images.

build-container.sh and nixlbench's build.sh gain DOCKER_BUILD_EXTRA_ARGS, a
generic passthrough appended to their docker build command and empty by default.
build-container.sh also defaults DOCKER_BUILDKIT=1: RUN --mount is rejected by
the legacy builder, which pre-23 Docker still uses by default.

The container and nightly wheel matrices write the config with
write_github_gitconfig (common.sh) in their setup step, pass it to the build as
--secret through that variable, and use it for their agent-side clones via
git -c include.path, which leaves existing global config such as safe.directory
intact. build-wheel-matrix needs nothing, since --wheel-base-image skips the stage
that clones.

The credential is svc-nixl-github-read-only-token, a fine-grained token with
read-only access to public repositories and no other permissions. PR builds run
PR-controlled Dockerfiles and scripts with it available, so it must not carry
write scopes. Because the header is sent on every request, an invalid token fails
every clone in these jobs rather than falling back to anonymous.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-test-sanitizers · commit 37326615

TL;DR: The tsan variant of nixl-ci-test-sanitizers failed on one flaky gtest, MDManagerEtcdFixture.InvalidateLocalRemovesRemote, where the ETCD metadata invalidation didn't propagate to the peer inside the test's hard-coded 3 s poll window under ThreadSanitizer; the PR's Dockerfile/CI changes are unrelated. Fix by scaling (or skipping) that timeout under sanitizer builds.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage "Test Sanitizer" (x86_64-tsan, stage id 262) failed because the meson nixl:sanitizer / gtest suite reported 1 failed test out of 249: MDManagerEtcdFixture.InvalidateLocalRemovesRemote. All standalone binaries in that stage (agent_example, nixl_example, ucx_backend_test, nixl_posix_test, serdes_test, test_plugin) passed; the asan_ubsan variant passed entirely.

Root cause: From meson-logs/testlog.txt in sanitizer-logs-x86_64-tsan.tar.gz:

../test/gtest/md_manager.cpp:298: Failure
Expected equality of these values:
  waitForRemoteMD(dst.agent.get(), src.name, {DRAM_SEG}, NIXL_ERR_NOT_FOUND)
    Which is: 0
  NIXL_ERR_NOT_FOUND
    Which is: -4
[  FAILED  ] MDManagerEtcdFixture.InvalidateLocalRemovesRemote (3685 ms)

src.agent->invalidateLocalMD(nullptr) returned NIXL_SUCCESS, but dst's checkRemoteMD() still reported NIXL_SUCCESS (0 — metadata still cached/present) for the entire polling window. waitForRemoteMD has a hard-coded 3 s deadline (test/gtest/md_manager.cpp:83), and the test's 3685 ms duration shows it burned the whole deadline and gave up — i.e. the ETCD-mediated invalidation simply hadn't reached the peer yet. This is a timing margin problem, not a hang: the suite ran continuously (100513 ms total, 220 passed) and the stage exited normally; there are no large gaps in the log.

Two pieces of evidence that it's a margin/flake rather than a real regression:

Implicated commit: No commit in this build introduced the failure. The test and its 3 s bound come from 2ff0105f "Metadata manager pr5 (#1930)" (aschwartz12); the sanitizer job itself from 226d87bf (#1709, NirWolfer). The build's own commit 3732661/1af64f85 is not implicated.

File: test/gtest/md_manager.cpp:298 (assertion), with the root of the tightness at test/gtest/md_manager.cpp:83 (timeout = std::chrono::seconds(3) default in waitForRemoteMD).

Suggested fix: Make the metadata-propagation wait sanitizer-aware instead of a fixed 3 s:

  • Give waitForRemoteMD a timeout that scales when built under a sanitizer, e.g. a multiplier derived from __has_feature(thread_sanitizer) / __SANITIZE_THREAD__ (and the ASAN equivalents), or read a NIXL_TEST_TIMEOUT_SCALE env var that the sanitizer CI wrapper sets. A 5–10× factor matches the observed slowdown elsewhere in the same log.
  • Pass an explicit longer timeout at md_manager.cpp:298 specifically, since invalidation must round-trip through ETCD plus the peer's comm thread — strictly more work than the SendAndFetchByName case that passed.
  • As a short-term unblock, re-run the job; the failure is not reproducible-by-construction. If it recurs on main, treat it as a genuine invalidation-propagation latency bug in the MD manager's KV backend rather than a test bound, and instrument how long invalidateLocalMD takes to become visible to checkRemoteMD.
  • Optionally mirror the existing pattern and GTEST_SKIP() the ETCD fixture under TSAN, as nixlDurationTest already does for timing-sensitive cases.

Related: PR #2310 (the triggering PR, unrelated to the failure); #1930 (introduced MDManagerEtcdFixture); #1709 (introduced the sanitizer CI job). No existing issue tracking this flake was found.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-gpu-vr · commit 37326615

TL;DR: The build didn't fail on code — the Allocate Environment stage's salloc on the vrnvl72 partition sat queued for the full --immediate=3600 window and gave up ("Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out"), so the fix is a capacity/retry matter on the Vera Rubin slurm partition, not a source change.

Full analysis

Summary: nixl-ci-gpu-vr #93 failed in the Allocate Environment stage: slurm job 2380569 never got nodes on partition vrnvl72 within the 1-hour immediate window, aborting the parallel branch build_helper_dl/aarch64/1.

Root cause: Pure resource starvation in the slurm allocation step, not a hang in nixl code. Everything the build actually compiles succeeded: UCX install, meson setup/ninja for nixl and nixlbench, the container image was built and pushed (nixl-ci-gpu-vr-test:93, finished 11:43:48). The allocation was then requested at 11:43:55 with salloc -N 1 -p vrnvl72 --immediate=3600 --time=02:20:00 --no-shell --account=rubin --exclude=vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp137,vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp139,vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp141,vr-nvl72-ts2b-l10-comp102. Slurm itself reported Pending job allocation 2380569 / job 2380569 queued and waiting for resources, and at 12:44:04 — exactly 3600 s later, matching --immediate=3600 — salloc: error: Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out. The ~60-minute silence is slurm's own queue wait (the stage duration 3,610,739 ms equals the immediate window), i.e. the documented expiry of --immediate, not a stuck build step. Note also that the job requests exclusive whole-node allocation (salloc: lua: Setting job to exclusive mode as no gpu count was specified) while four nodes are hard-excluded (added by PR #2339), which further shrinks an already small Vera Rubin pool. With no usable node free for an hour, the stage fails and the pipeline aborts with script returned exit code 1.

Implicated commit: None in nixl source — the tested commit 37326615 (NirWolfer, "ci: authenticate the Dockerfiles' github.com clones in CI") built and pushed its image successfully. Contributing CI config change: PR #2339 "CI: exclude misconfigured Vera Rubin nodes from nixl-ci-gpu-vr", which added the four-node --exclude list seen in the salloc argv.

File: CI pipeline slurm.allocation invocation for nixl-ci-gpu-vr (partition vrnvl72, immediateTimeout:3600, extraArgs --account=rubin + 4-node --exclude), as echoed at Jenkins stage 208 log line 2.

Suggested fix:

  1. Re-run the build — this is a transient capacity failure, and the PR's own changes were fully validated up to the allocation step.
  2. Ask the cluster owners whether vrnvl72 had any non-excluded node idle in the 11:43–12:44 window; if the four excluded nodes have since been repaired, drop them from --exclude to restore the usable pool (the exclusion list is the only thing in CI's control that reduces eligibility).
  3. Make the allocation step resilient instead of failing the PR: wrap slurm.allocation in a retry (e.g. 2–3 attempts with a shorter immediateTimeout, say 900–1200 s each) so one busy window doesn't burn 60 minutes and then hard-fail, and mark allocation-exhaustion as UNSTABLE/aborted-infra rather than a red build, so it isn't mistaken for a code regression.
  4. Do not raise jobTimeout (02:20:00) — the job never started; only the queue-wait budget is implicated.

Related: PR #2339 (CI: exclude misconfigured Vera Rubin nodes from nixl-ci-gpu-vr) — source of the --exclude list narrowing the vrnvl72 pool; PR #2310 is the change under test and is not implicated.

Excludes four `vrnvl72` nodes from the `nixl-ci-gpu-vr` Slurm
allocation:

- `vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp137`, `comp139`, `comp141`
- `vr-nvl72-ts2b-l10-comp102`

These nodes are configured differently from the rest of the partition.
On them `test_prep_mem_view` fails deterministically — UCX rejects the
remote mem-view with `lane not found for element 0` — while the same
image and commit pass on the other nodes. In the bring-up runs every
failure landed on an affected node and every pass on an unaffected one.

Changes:

- `.ci/jenkins/lib/test-vr-matrix.yaml` — new `SLURM_EXCLUDE` env entry,
passed as `--exclude=${SLURM_EXCLUDE}` in the allocation step's
`extraArgs`, the same way `test-llm-container-matrix.yaml` already does.
- `.ci/docs/ci-overview.md` — note the exclusion on the `nixl-ci-gpu-vr`
entry.

## Summary

`Dockerfile.base` (through `.gitlab/build.sh` and the vLLM clone) and
the manylinux `wheel_base` clone their dependencies from github.com
anonymously. github.com intermittently answers an anonymous clone with
an HTTP 401; with no credential git tries to prompt, finds no TTY, and
fails the image build as `could not read Username for
'https://github.com'`.

These images are built by ci-demo outside any step. This uses the
`credentialsId` support for `runs_on_dockers` images added in
Mellanox/ci-demo#165.

Third of three PRs replacing #2263 (with #2309 and #2310).

## Changes

- Each `Dockerfile.base` / manylinux `wheel_base` entry in the 7
matrices that build them sets `credentialsId:
'svc-nixl-github-read-only-token'`, bound by ci-demo around that image's
build. It is a fine-grained token with read-only access to public
repositories and no other permissions, since the build runs
PR-controlled code with it available.
- `pipeline_on_image_build` calls `write_github_gitconfig /tmp/ghconfig`
— the `common.sh` helper added by #2310 — which writes an
`http.https://github.com/.extraheader` git config in the ephemeral build
pod (tracing off, mode 600), or an empty file when nothing is bound. The
hook runs under `#!/bin/bash -e`, since `common.sh` uses `$RANDOM`,
which a POSIX `sh` lacks.
- The entries' `build_args` pass it as `--secret
id=ghconfig,src=/tmp/ghconfig`; `Dockerfile.base` mounts it at
`${_HOME}/.gitconfig` (`mode=0444`, non-root) on the `build.sh` and vLLM
`RUN`s. It never lands in a layer or `podman history`.
`GIT_TERMINAL_PROMPT=0` is an `ARG`, so it does not persist into the
image.
- `.ci/docs/ci-overview.md` updated.

Because the header is sent on every request, an invalid token fails
every clone in these builds rather than falling back to anonymous.
Unbound, the file is empty and the clones stay anonymous as today, so
this is safe to merge before or after ci-demo#165. The manylinux
`wheel_base` has mounted the secret since #2310, so its clones are
authenticated too.

Relies on Mellanox/ci-demo#165 (merged), which adds `credentialsId` on
`runs_on_dockers` images. Verified end to end before merge with the
library pinned to that branch: the token was bound around each
base-image build (`Masking supported pattern matches of
$NIXL_GITHUB_TOKEN` in every Build Docker stage), and `docker build`
received `--secret id=ghconfig,src=/tmp/ghconfig`.

* CI image builds can now authenticate GitHub dependency clones, helping
builds succeed when anonymous access is unavailable.
* Builds continue without authentication when no token is configured;
invalid, expired, or restricted tokens cause GitHub clones to fail.
* **Documentation**
* Updated CI guidance to explain authenticated dependency clones and
their behavior.

`meson setup` clones two `[wrap-git]` subprojects from github.com:
`taskflow` (`subprojects/taskflow.wrap`, a `[wrap-git]` since #2121) and
`prometheus-cpp`. #2310 mounted the `ghconfig` build secret on every
explicit `git clone` `RUN` in the Dockerfiles, but not on the `RUN`s
that call `meson setup`, so those two clones stayed anonymous. When
github.com answers an anonymous clone with an HTTP 401, the two clones
fail in different ways:

- `taskflow` is required, so `meson setup` fails. In
`nixl-ci-build-container-pr` #1012 (PR #2378), two of the four `Build
image` branches failed with `fatal: could not read Username for
'https://github.com': terminal prompts disabled` / `ERROR: Subproject
taskflow is buildable: NO`.
- `prometheus-cpp` is an optional CMake subproject, so meson continues
without it and the Prometheus telemetry exporter is not built. This
already happened in CI on 2026-09-23 and 2026-09-28:
`libtelemetry_exporter_prometheus.so` was missing and 15
`prometheusTelemetryTest` cases failed.

`contrib/Dockerfile.manylinux` has the same unmounted `meson setup`, in
the `wheel` stage. The PR wheel build (`build-wheel-matrix.yaml`) bound
the github.com token only around the ci-demo build of `wheel_base`, so
its `Build Wheel` step, which builds the `wheel` stage, passed no secret
at all.

Changes:

- `contrib/Dockerfile`, `contrib/Dockerfile.manylinux`,
`benchmark/nixlbench/contrib/Dockerfile`: mount `ghconfig` on the NIXL
`meson setup` `RUN`. The later meson-python builds in the same
Dockerfiles reuse the subprojects already downloaded into the source
tree, and nixlbench's own subprojects are `[wrap-file]` tarballs, so
these are the only `RUN`s that clone.
- `.ci/jenkins/lib/build-wheel-matrix.yaml`: the `Build Wheel` step
binds `svc-nixl-github-read-only-token`, writes `/tmp/ghconfig` with
`write_github_gitconfig` (in a subshell, so sourcing `common.sh` does
not change the build step's environment) and passes it as `--secret
id=ghconfig,src=/tmp/ghconfig`, as `build-wheel-nightly-matrix.yaml`
already does.
- `.ci/docs/ci-overview.md`: cover the `meson setup` mounts and the
wheel matrix in the authenticated-clones section.

Not covered here: `nixl-ci-non-gpu`, `nixl-ci-gpu` and
`nixl-ci-test-sanitizers` run `meson setup` directly in their containers
rather than in an image build, so their `taskflow` and `prometheus-cpp`
clones remain anonymous. Removing the configure-time clone is tracked
separately.

`meson setup` clones the `taskflow` and `prometheus-cpp` `[wrap-git]`
subprojects, plus prometheus-cpp's civetweb and googletest submodules,
from github.com. The test pipelines run it through `.gitlab/build.sh`
outside the image builds that #2310 and #2391 authenticate, so those
clones are anonymous. When github.com answers an anonymous clone with an
HTTP 401, `taskflow` fails `meson setup`, as in `nixl-ci-non-gpu` #3426
(PR #2378):

```
Cloning into 'taskflow'...
fatal: could not read Username for 'https://github.com': No such device or address
meson.build:233:16: ERROR: Git command failed: [... 'clone', '--depth', '1', '--branch', 'v3.10.0', 'https://github.com/taskflow/taskflow.git', 'taskflow']
```

`prometheus-cpp` is optional, so the same failure on its clone drops the
Prometheus telemetry exporter from the build instead. This happened on
2026-09-23 and 2026-09-28, and 15 `prometheusTelemetryTest` cases then
failed because `libtelemetry_exporter_prometheus.so` was missing. Since
`taskflow.wrap` became a `[wrap-git]` (#2121), the CI triage history
shows these failures in `nixl-ci-non-gpu`, `-gpu`, `-dl-gpu-ep` and
`-test-sanitizers`.

This uses the same read-only token and `write_github_gitconfig` config
file as #2310.

Changes:

- `.ci/jenkins/lib/build-matrix.yaml` (`nixl-ci-non-gpu`) and
`test-sanitizer-matrix.yaml`: these run `build.sh` directly in the job
container, so there is no image build to mount a secret into. The
`Build` step binds `svc-nixl-github-read-only-token`, writes
`/tmp/ghconfig` in a subshell, and exports `GIT_CONFIG_COUNT=1
GIT_CONFIG_KEY_0=include.path GIT_CONFIG_VALUE_0=/tmp/ghconfig`. Every
git process the step starts inherits these variables, including meson's
clones and their submodule fetches. `~/.gitconfig` is not written, and
the variables carry only the file path. This needs git 2.31 or later;
the CI images have 2.34 and 2.43.
- `.ci/jenkins/lib/test-matrix.yaml`, `test-dl-matrix.yaml`,
`test-vr-matrix.yaml` and `test-dl-ep-matrix.yaml`: the image-build step
binds the token next to the Artifactory one, writes `/tmp/ghconfig` and
passes `--secret id=ghconfig,src=/tmp/ghconfig` to `podman build`.
- `.ci/dockerfiles/Dockerfile.gpu-test`: the `build.sh` `RUN` mounts the
secret at its default `/run/secrets/ghconfig` (`mode=0444`, so the
non-root build user can read it) and points `build.sh` at it with the
same `GIT_CONFIG_*` variables. No home directory is involved, and the
secret exists only for that `RUN`.
- `.ci/docs/ci-overview.md`: add a section describing both paths.

Without a token, or with an empty config, the clones stay anonymous as
before. An invalid token fails them.

Both wraps stay `[wrap-git]`. `prometheus-cpp` could later become a
`[wrap-file]` using its uploaded `prometheus-cpp-with-submodules.tar.gz`
release asset, but authentication already covers its clones. taskflow
has no release asset, and its auto-generated GitHub archive changed hash
once already, which is why #2121 switched it to `[wrap-git]`.
