Summary

Dockerfile.base (through .gitlab/build.sh and the vLLM clone) and the manylinux wheel_base clone their dependencies from github.com anonymously. github.com intermittently answers an anonymous clone with an HTTP 401; with no credential git tries to prompt, finds no TTY, and fails the image build as could not read Username for 'https://github.com'.

These images are built by ci-demo outside any step. This uses the credentialsId support for runs_on_dockers images added in Mellanox/ci-demo#165.

Third of three PRs replacing #2263 (with #2309 and #2310).

Changes

  • Each Dockerfile.base / manylinux wheel_base entry in the 7 matrices that build them sets credentialsId: 'svc-nixl-github-read-only-token', bound by ci-demo around that image's build. It is a fine-grained token with read-only access to public repositories and no other permissions, since the build runs PR-controlled code with it available.
  • pipeline_on_image_build calls write_github_gitconfig /tmp/ghconfig — the common.sh helper added by ci: authenticate the Dockerfiles' github.com clones in CI #2310 — which writes an http.https://github.com/.extraheader git config in the ephemeral build pod (tracing off, mode 600), or an empty file when nothing is bound. The hook runs under #!/bin/bash -e, since common.sh uses $RANDOM, which a POSIX sh lacks.
  • The entries' build_args pass it as --secret id=ghconfig,src=/tmp/ghconfig; Dockerfile.base mounts it at ${_HOME}/.gitconfig (mode=0444, non-root) on the build.sh and vLLM RUNs. It never lands in a layer or podman history. GIT_TERMINAL_PROMPT=0 is an ARG, so it does not persist into the image.
  • .ci/docs/ci-overview.md updated.

Because the header is sent on every request, an invalid token fails every clone in these builds rather than falling back to anonymous. Unbound, the file is empty and the clones stay anonymous as today, so this is safe to merge before or after ci-demo#165. The manylinux wheel_base has mounted the secret since #2310, so its clones are authenticated too.

Relies on Mellanox/ci-demo#165 (merged), which adds credentialsId on runs_on_dockers images. Verified end to end before merge with the library pinned to that branch: the token was bound around each base-image build (Masking supported pattern matches of $NIXL_GITHUB_TOKEN in every Build Docker stage), and docker build received --secret id=ghconfig,src=/tmp/ghconfig.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Build Improvements
    • CI image builds can now authenticate GitHub dependency clones, helping builds succeed when anonymous access is unavailable.
    • Builds continue without authentication when no token is configured; invalid, expired, or restricted tokens cause GitHub clones to fail.
  • Documentation
    • Updated CI guidance to explain authenticated dependency clones and their behavior.

vLLM now includes a NIXL EP CUDA-graph scaling test, so the CI patch no
longer applies. Run the upstream test directly without patching vLLM.
The current vLLM release also includes the FlashInfer CUDA 13.3 fix, so
remove the CUTLASS MLA workaround.

## Summary by CodeRabbit

* **Tests**
* Updated Elastic EP validation to run the NIXL EP CUDA graphs scenario
in place of two previous test cases.
* The test image now uses vLLM 0.30.0. The validation setup no longer
applies an additional vLLM test patch or sets the associated backend and
rank options, reflecting the updated test invocation.

Excludes four `vrnvl72` nodes from the `nixl-ci-gpu-vr` Slurm
allocation:

- `vr-nvl72-ts3-l06-comp137`, `comp139`, `comp141`
- `vr-nvl72-ts2b-l10-comp102`

These nodes are configured differently from the rest of the partition.
On them `test_prep_mem_view` fails deterministically — UCX rejects the
remote mem-view with `lane not found for element 0` — while the same
image and commit pass on the other nodes. In the bring-up runs every
failure landed on an affected node and every pass on an unaffected one.

Changes:

- `.ci/jenkins/lib/test-vr-matrix.yaml` — new `SLURM_EXCLUDE` env entry,
passed as `--exclude=${SLURM_EXCLUDE}` in the allocation step's
`extraArgs`, the same way `test-llm-container-matrix.yaml` already does.
- `.ci/docs/ci-overview.md` — note the exclusion on the `nixl-ci-gpu-vr`
entry.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-non-gpu · commit 04a4dc9f

TL;DR: The build failed only in the aarch64 Test Python leg: test_tcpstore_metadata_exchange could not connect to its own in-process PyTorch TCPStore master on the CI-assigned port 10507 within the test's hard 5-second timeout. This is a flaky test-harness timing/port issue introduced with the test itself, unrelated to PR #2313 (CI base-image git auth) — let the kernel assign the port and give the store a realistic timeout.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage Test Python (node 804, ubuntu22/aarch64 leg) failed with torch.distributed.DistNetworkError: The client socket has timed out after 5000ms while trying to connect to (127.0.0.1, 10507) in test/python/test_tcpstore_metadata.py::test_tcpstore_metadata_exchange; 24 passed, 1 failed, 3 skipped.

Root cause: The test constructs dist.TCPStore(host_name="127.0.0.1", port=int(os.environ["NIXL_TCPSTORE_PORT"]), is_master=True, timeout=timedelta(seconds=5)). The port comes from .gitlab/test_python.sh → get_next_tcp_port() in .ci/scripts/common.sh, which picks a port from a fixed per-executor slot (nixl_concurrent_id=0 in this container, so the range is deterministic: etcd got 10505/10506, the store got 10507) and only verifies freeness with a one-shot ss -tuln | grep -q :10507. At selection time (14:34:41) the port was free, yet 9 s later the master's own loopback connect timed out after 5000 ms — i.e. the store server never accepted inside the 5 s budget. Contributing evidence in the same log: the container's name resolution is degraded ([c10d] The hostname of the client socket cannot be retrieved. err=-3, EAI_AGAIN) and this leg is the slow aarch64 one running concurrently with five other matrix legs (the pip install . metadata step alone took ~68 s). There is no hang elsewhere — the suite ran 8.45 s total and the surrounding stages are healthy — so this is a timing/port-assignment fragility in the test, not a product defect and not related to the commit under test (PR #2313 only adds write_github_gitconfig usage for Dockerfile/agent git auth, which the log shows working: checkout and all six Docker builds succeeded, and builds 3341–3343 on the same branch passed Test Python).

Implicated commit: aed5ef2 — "test: add Python TCPStore metadata integration (#2148)", aschwartz12 (added both the test and the NIXL_TCPSTORE_PORT plumbing)

File: test/python/test_tcpstore_metadata.py:21-28 (port/timeout), with .gitlab/test_python.sh:70-71 and .ci/scripts/common.sh:38-61 (get_next_tcp_port)

Suggested fix:

  1. Stop pinning the store to a CI-allocated port — the test already derives its endpoint from tcp_store.port, so nothing depends on the specific value. Default to port=0 (kernel-assigned) and only honour NIXL_TCPSTORE_PORT if explicitly set:
    tcp_store = dist.TCPStore(
        host_name="127.0.0.1",
        port=int(os.environ.get("NIXL_TCPSTORE_PORT", "0")),
        world_size=None, is_master=True,
        timeout=timedelta(seconds=60),   # was 5s
        wait_for_workers=False,
    )
    and drop the NIXL_TCPSTORE_PORT export from .gitlab/test_python.sh (the get_next_tcp_port TOCTOU check cannot guarantee the port stays usable).
  2. Raise the store timeout to ≥30-60 s (keeping @pytest.mark.timeout(20) → bump to e.g. 90) so a loaded aarch64 runner can't fail a loopback accept, and optionally wrap the construction in a short retry loop.
  3. Re-run the build; this is a flake and should not block PR ci: authenticate github.com clones in the ci-demo-built base images #2313.

Related: PR #2313 (branch under test), PR #2148 (introduced the test), PR #1965 "CI: bind test_sync_mode_agent listener on an ephemeral port" — the same ephemeral-port remedy already applied to a sibling test.

Dockerfile.base (via .gitlab/build.sh and the vLLM clone) and the manylinux
wheel_base clone their dependencies from github.com anonymously. github.com
intermittently answers an anonymous clone with an HTTP 401; with no credential
git tries to prompt, finds no TTY, and fails the image build as "could not read
Username".

These images are built by ci-demo outside any step, so their runs_on_dockers
entries carry credentialsId: 'svc-nixl-github-read-only-token', which ci-demo binds
around the build. A pipeline_on_image_build hook calls write_github_gitconfig
(common.sh, added by the container-build PR) to write an
http.extraheader git config at /tmp/ghconfig in the build pod, or an empty file
when nothing is bound, and build_args hand it to docker build as the "ghconfig"
secret. Dockerfile.base mounts it at ~/.gitconfig for the build.sh and vLLM RUNs,
so it never lands in a layer; GIT_TERMINAL_PROMPT=0 is an ARG so it does not
persist into the image. The hook runs under bash explicitly: common.sh uses
$RANDOM, which a POSIX sh lacks.

The token is a fine-grained one with read-only access to public repositories and
no other permissions, since the build runs PR-controlled code with it available.
Because the header is sent on every request, an invalid token fails every clone
in these builds rather than falling back to anonymous. Unbound, the file is empty
and the clones stay anonymous as before, so this is safe ahead of ci-demo support
for image credentialsId. The manylinux wheel_base has
mounted the secret since the container-build PR, so its clones are authenticated too.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-dl-gpu · commit fceeda7d

TL;DR: test_prep_mem_view failed because UCX rejected NIXL's registered VRAM memory handle for the device md it selected on this node (invalid memh for md_index=7/6), so ucp_device_local_mem_list_create returned Invalid parameter and prepMemView returned NIXL_ERR_BACKEND. This is node/transport-dependent: the same test passed in build #2611 on a node without accelerated IB, and the fix is to make the registration cover the device-capable md (or gate the test on a runtime device-lane probe rather than only the compile-time HAVE_UCX_GPU_DEVICE_API flag).

Full analysis

Summary: Stage "Run DL Python tests" (node 229) failed — pytest -s test/python reported 1 failed, 25 passed, 2 skipped, with test/python/test_nixl_api.py::test_prep_mem_view raising nixl_cu13._bindings.nixlBackendError: NIXL_ERR_BACKEND.

Root cause: Both spawned ranks failed identically inside the local overload of prep_mem_view. UCX logged, for each rank:

ucp_device.c:249 UCX ERROR invalid memh for md_index=7 (rank 1)
ucp_device.c:249 UCX ERROR invalid memh for md_index=6 (rank 0)
ucp_device.c:341 failed to pack local mem list element for element=0
ucp_device.c:466 failed to create local mem list handle: Invalid parameter
E ucx_backend.cpp:766] Failed to prepare local memory view: Failed to create device memory list(local): Invalid parameter

nixl::ucx::createMemList(const nixl_meta_dlist_t&, ...) builds each element with field_mask = MEMH | LOCAL_ADDR and hands UCX the handle from md->getMem().getMemh() (src/plugins/ucx/mem_list.cpp:117-121). ucp_device_local_mem_list_create then validates that this memh has an entry for the md backing the device lane it picked — md_index 6/7 here — and it does not. The exception is caught at ucx_backend.cpp:796-799 and converted to NIXL_ERR_BACKEND, which propagates through the pybind layer into mp.spawn.

This is environment-dependent, and the logs show the pivot directly. Build #2611 ran the identical test on gb-nvl-057-compute02, where every agent logged 6 IB device(s) were detected, but accelerated IB support was not found! — fewer/different mds, and test_prep_mem_view passed (26 passed, 2 skipped). Build #2613 ran on gb200-nvl4-ts2-93, where that warning is absent, i.e. accelerated IB is present and UCX exposes extra device mds (the build stage confirms libuct_ib_mlx5_gda and the GPU device API are compiled in: "UCX GPU Device API: YES"). On that node UCX selects a device md the NIXL VRAM registration never mapped. The failure is deterministic on this node class (both ranks, same symptom), not a race, and not related to the PR under test — commit fceeda7d only touches .ci GitHub-clone authentication.

Secondary note: .gitlab/build.sh:438 sets export UCX_TLS=^cuda_ipc, but that only applies to the build script; .gitlab/test_python.sh does not set it, so the test process runs with all transports enabled and is free to pick a GDA/mlx5 device md.

Implicated commit: [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] — x41lakazam, "BINDINGS/PYTHON: Expose prepMemView (local + remote overloads)" (#1715), which added test_prep_mem_view. The underlying local-path element construction dates to 1f64b71c / 8181319e (Raul Akhmetshin).

File: src/plugins/ucx/mem_list.cpp:109-122 (local element built from getMemh()), surfaced at src/plugins/ucx/ucx_backend.cpp:787-800; test at test/python/test_nixl_api.py:293.

Suggested fix: Make the local device mem-list path and the memory registration agree on the md:

  1. Preferred — register VRAM so the memh covers the device-capable md used by the worker passed to ucp_device_local_mem_list_create (the local path already passes &worker via UCP_DEVICE_MEM_LIST_PARAMS_FIELD_WORKER, but the memh comes from a registration that didn't request that md). Add the device/exportable mem-map flags at registration time when the UCX GPU device API is enabled.
  2. Harden the gate — @pytest.mark.skipif(not bindings.HAVE_UCX_GPU_DEVICE_API, ...) is a compile-time flag only and cannot tell whether a usable device md exists on the node. Add a runtime capability probe (attempt a trivial local mem-list create, skip on Invalid parameter) so the test skips instead of hard-failing on nodes whose transport set has no valid device md.
  3. Short term, to unblock the pipeline — export the same UCX_TLS=^cuda_ipc (or an explicit device-capable TLS list) in .gitlab/test_python.sh so the test environment matches the transports the device mem list supports, rather than relying on whichever node slurm allocates.

Related: #2194 — bugfix: test: make the device API tests actually run (directly adjacent: device-API test gating); #1715 — BINDINGS/PYTHON: Expose prepMemView. Note build #2612 failed earlier on the same job for an unrelated infra reason (srun: _fwd_tree_get_addr: can't find address for host gb200-nvl4-ts2-65, check slurm.conf), so #2613 is the first build to actually reach this test on a gb200-nvl4-ts2 node.

🛡️ This comment had 1 potential secret(s) redacted (Hex High Entropy String). See request_id 5e63d636-db51-4fa8-b3f4-28275a05f7f2 in the triage console for the audit trail.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep · commit fceeda7d

TL;DR: The "Allocate DL EP Environment" stage failed because salloc on the gb200nvl72_cx8 partition never got resources within its 1-hour --immediate=3600 window (job 2405200 stayed queued, then "Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out") — an infrastructure/capacity issue unrelated to the PR's code; the allocation request should ask for GPUs explicitly (so it isn't escalated to whole-node exclusive) and/or retry rather than failing the build outright.

Full analysis

Summary: Build #1541 of nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep failed in stage 209 "Allocate DL EP Environment" — the slurm salloc for a GB200 node timed out waiting for resources; all build/compile stages (Build Docker, "Compiling NIXL EP Docker Image for DL") succeeded.

Root cause: Resource starvation on the slurm partition, not a defect in the commit under test. The stage log shows:

  • 09:33:52 — ssh … salloc -N 1 -p gb200nvl72_cx8 --job-name=nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep-1541 --immediate=3600 --time=02:00:00 --no-shell --account=blackwell
  • 10:34:00 — salloc: Pending job allocation 2405200 / salloc: job 2405200 queued and waiting for resources / salloc: error: Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out

The stage duration (3,609,822 ms) matches the --immediate=3600 window almost exactly, so this is not a hang: salloc was deliberately blocking for its full configured hour and then gave up because no gb200nvl72_cx8 node became free. The single gap in the log is the salloc wait itself, which is the expected behavior of --immediate, and salloc emitted its own diagnostic rather than being SIGTERM'd.

A contributing factor is visible one line earlier: salloc: lua: Setting job to exclusive mode as no gpu count was specified. Because the request passes no --gpus/--gres, the site's lua job_submit plugin promotes it to exclusive whole-node, which is far harder to schedule on a contended GB200 partition than a GPU-count request would be. The preceding build stages consumed ~61 min of pipeline time before the allocation was even attempted, so the job entered the queue late and competed for a fully-busy partition.

Implicated commit: unknown — not caused by fceeda7d ("ci: authenticate github.com clones in the ci-demo-built base images", NirWolfer), whose affected stages (Build Docker, EP image compile) all passed.

File: Jenkins shared-library slurm.allocation call site for this job — args logged as partition:gb200nvl72_cx8, nodes:1, jobTimeout:02:00:00, immediateTimeout:3600, jobName:nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep-1541 (defined in the nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep job config / swx-jenkins-lib; not present under .ci/ in this repo)

Suggested fix:

  1. Add an explicit GPU request (e.g. --gpus-per-node=4 or the appropriate --gres) to the extraArgs of the slurm.allocation call so the lua plugin does not escalate the job to exclusive whole-node mode — this materially widens the set of schedulable nodes on gb200nvl72_cx8.
  2. Make the allocation failure retryable/non-fatal: wrap it in a retry loop, or drop --immediate and rely on a queue wait with a Jenkins-level timeout, so a transiently-full partition requeues instead of red-flagging the PR.
  3. Re-run build Revert "CI: replace scripts with slurm jenkins library" #1541; if salloc fails again, ask the DL cluster admins to check capacity/reservations on gb200nvl72_cx8 for account blackwell — reference slurm allocation ID 2405200.
