A data plugin cannot emit tracing today, by construction: trace backends are separate .so files from data plugins, and the only thing core hands a backend at construction is nixlBackendInitParams, which carries no tracer, sink or trace handle. Every merged span therefore lives in nixl_agent.cpp and backend work appears only as elapsed time inside a core span. Add nixlBackendTraceSink, a pure interface owned by core, reachable through a pointer appended to nixlBackendInitParams and left null when tracing is off. Phases are named by a closed nixl_trace_stage_t enum defined in core rather than free-form per-plugin strings, so timelines stay comparable across backends; the generic STAGE enumerator carries a plugin-supplied label for anything genuinely plugin-specific. Core forwards a recorded phase to the composite tracer, tagged with the recording backend, the plugin's timestamp and any plugin attributes. No plugin emits stages yet: UCX and libfabric map onto the vocabulary in their own changes. NIXL_PLUGIN_API_VERSION goes from 1 to 2, keeping the loader's strict-equality check. The bump is what makes appending a field safe: without it, a plugin built against the new header and loaded by an older core would read a field that core never allocated. It is also the first floor this API has had. The value has read 1 since the header was created in March 2025, while the plugin ABI itself broke at least three times underneath it - ai-dynamo#562 added three data members to nixlBackendEngine, ai-dynamo#701 and ai-dynamo#1342 removed virtuals - so binaries built before those changes already miscompute offsets or vtable slots when loaded today. After the bump such a binary is refused with a clear error instead of corrupting memory. All in-tree plugins pass the macro symbolically and rebuild unchanged. Tests cover both halves. A stale plugin (MOCK_STALE_BACKEND, reporting version 1) asserts the loader's rejection rather than assuming it, which is the first test this check has ever had. The sink's forwarding, stage vocabulary, plugin label and attribute pass-through are asserted against a mock trace backend, and an agent-level case pins that the pointer stays null when no trace backend is enabled. Signed-off-by: Efraim Eygin <eeygin@nvidia.com>
Addresses external review of the plugin-facing phase sink. Tracing is documented as an internal NIXL API (docs/tracing.md): the nixl::trace headers are deliberately not installed. Installing backend_trace.h contradicted that and would have frozen the stage vocabulary as public ABI before UCX and libfabric have validated it. backend_aux.h now forward-declares nixlBackendTraceSink instead of including the header, so the install list is untouched and an out-of-tree plugin sees an opaque pointer it cannot dereference. Teardown: tracer_ was declared after backendEngines_, so it was destroyed first. A phase recorded from an engine's progress thread as that engine joins in its own destructor would have reached a freed Tracer. tracer_ now precedes both the sinks that reference it and the engines. Latent today because no plugin emits a phase yet, but this is the change that defines the lifetime contract. The seven phase span names are registered with NVTX up front; without that, every phase took the unknown-name fallback, which allocates a std::string and calls nvtxDomainRegisterStringA on each call. Phases are per-operation on progress threads, unlike the per-API-call core spans. clang-format repacks the whole name array as one braced list. Two tests could not fail. TracingOffLeavesTraceSinkNull compared a member that was already initialised to nullptr, so it passed even if the mock never observed the pointer; the member is now optional and the test asserts it was recorded. InertWhenNoBackendIsEnabled asserted Tracer::empty(), which held regardless of what recordPhase did, and an empty Tracer never exists in production since makeTracer returns nullptr. It is replaced by InactiveSpanRecordsNothing, which uses a backend that declines the span -- the production-reachable path the !span.active() guard exists for. Signed-off-by: Efraim Eygin <eeygin@nvidia.com>
Second external review round. The sink header moves from src/api/cpp/backend/ to src/core/tracing/, next to trace.h. It was the only file in the public backend directory that is not installed, which invited someone to add it back to install_headers or a packager to glob it in. Its location now says what it is. src/core is already on the plugin include path. recordPhase is noexcept. Backends call it from progress threads and completion callbacks, where an escaping bad_alloc is std::terminate; core catches and drops instead, because tracing must never break a transfer. A label passed with any stage other than STAGE was silently discarded -- not recorded, not rejected -- even though label is a parameter on every call. It is now always recorded as nixl.stage.label, and still doubles as the span name for STAGE so the Nsight timeline stays readable. The per-call NVTX string registration that naming costs is confined to labelled STAGE, which the vocabulary is designed to make rare. The header now documents what a plugin author has to know and cannot infer: what each stage means, that the timestamp is the nixlTime microsecond counter rather than a wall clock, that label and attrs are borrowed for the call only, that the pointer is null when tracing is off, and that concurrent calls are safe. New test covering the agent wiring in the positive direction: with NVTX active the plugin receives a non-null sink. The existing agent fixture forces tracing off, so only the null case was covered. docs/tracing.md no longer says backend sub-spans are unplanned and now carries the stage vocabulary; BackendGuide.md no longer claims the version check gives backward/forward compatibility, which it does not. Signed-off-by: Efraim Eygin <eeygin@nvidia.com>
The copyright-check job compares the SPDX end year against the file's last modified year, and this file was edited in 2026. Signed-off-by: Efraim Eygin <eeygin@nvidia.com>
The recordPhase doc claimed the timestamp shares a clock with telemetry and is converted at export. Neither holds: nixlTime::getUs() has no other caller in the tree, and the value is attached to the span verbatim as nixl.stage.timestamp_us. The catch-all also swallowed silently, unlike the two other catch (...) blocks in core, which both log. Report the first drop per sink. Signed-off-by: Efraim Eygin <eeygin@nvidia.com>
NIXL_ERROR is absl LOG(ERROR), whose LogMessage constructor heap allocates a ~30 KB LogMessageData (two 15000-byte buffers). The most likely exception reaching the catch-all is bad_alloc from the span path, which is exactly when the log line would throw again -- and an exception escaping recordPhase terminates the process, on a progress thread. Wrap the log in its own handler. Also name nixlTime::getUs() in the timestamp doc, and cover the catch path: a backend that throws must not propagate, and repeated drops must produce a single log line. Signed-off-by: Efraim Eygin <eeygin@nvidia.com>
createBackend inserted the sink with try_emplace, which does not move its argument when the key is already present. The duplicate-type guard at the top of the function makes that unreachable today, but if the later backendEngines_ insert throws, a stale traceSinks_ entry outlives it and the next call silently drops the new sink while the engine keeps the init_params.traceSink pointer it was handed. insert_or_assign always takes ownership. Standardize on phase rather than mixing it with stage: nixl_trace_stage_t becomes nixl_trace_phase_t, its escape hatch STAGE becomes OTHER, the span attributes become nixl.phase.*, and stageSpanName becomes toStringView. Default attrs to an empty span, since most phases carry none. Signed-off-by: Efraim Eygin <eeygin@nvidia.com>
The phase-to-span-name mapping is a pure function of nixl_trace_phase_t, so it now sits beside the enum in backend_trace.h as a [[nodiscard]] constexpr, like the toStringView helpers in ucx_enums.h. Signed-off-by: Efraim Eygin <eeygin@nvidia.com>

Review round 2 on ai-dynamo#2324. The paragraph on what core spans cover sat under "Backend phase spans" since ai-dynamo#2295 inserted that section; it describes the instrumented-operations table, so it moves back directly below it. NIX-1877 Signed-off-by: Efraim Eygin <eeygin@nvidia.com>
## What? Backends can now see the trace context of the request they are executing. `nixl_opt_b_args_t` gains `traceContext`, a pointer to the context the request handle owns, set by `makeXferReq`, `createXferReq` and `postXferReq`. It is the same context at prep and at every post of that request, so a plugin copies it onto its own request handle once at prep. It points at the zeroed, invalid context when tracing is off, and is null in `prepMemView`, which has no request. No plugin reads it yet. ## Why? [NIX-1877](https://linear.app/nvidia/issue/NIX-1877), part of distributed tracing ([NIX-1537](https://linear.app/nvidia/issue/NIX-1537)). #2295 let a plugin record phases; this lets it tell which request a phase, or a message it puts on the wire, belongs to. The UCX carrier (NIX-1879) is the first consumer. ## How? Plugins get the `TraceContext` value rather than the encoded 26-byte record, so a plugin that only records phases does not pay for encoding; a carrier calls `encodeTraceContext` itself. As with the sink, the type is only forward-declared in the installed `backend_aux.h`, so only in-tree plugins can dereference it. **No `NIXL_PLUGIN_API_VERSION` bump, deliberately.** An older plugin with this core is safe: the member is appended, so no existing offset moves, and every `nixl_opt_b_args_t` is constructed in core while plugins only receive a `const` pointer. The reverse, a plugin that reads the field loaded by a core from before this PR, is the case #2295 bumped for. Here it is covered by sequencing instead: version 2 is in no release yet (v1.5.0 predates #2295), the first reader is the UCX carrier (NIX-1879), and NIX-1878 lands before it with the bump to 3 that its new `nixlBackendEngine` virtual requires. Every plugin that reads `traceContext` will therefore report 3, and a core without the field refuses it. A reposted request hands over the same ids, by design: the context belongs to the request handle, not to a post (`Tracing.RequestContextsAreDistinctAndStable`), so a carrier will send the same ids for every post of a reused handle. <details> <summary>Tests</summary> - Tests go through the mock backend, which now records the context it sees in `prepXfer`/`postXfer`. They check that each request's own context reaches prep and post with tracing on (including a repost and the prepped `makeXferReq` path), that tracing off hands over the zeroed context, and that the request exposes the context it owns. - Verified in normal, ASan+UBSan, standalone UBSan and TSan builds. </details> <!-- This is an auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> ## Summary by CodeRabbit * **New Features** * Transfer backends now receive the trace context associated with a request during preparation and posting, including reposts. …2323) ## What? Counts backend trace phases that `TracerPhaseSink` drops in the agent's telemetry, as `agent_trace_phases_dropped_total` on the Prometheus, multi-process Prometheus and DOCA exporters. The new event type bumps `TELEMETRY_VERSION` (4 → 5), the multi-process store schema (1 → 2) and the telemetry plugin API (V2 → V3). ## Why? Follow-up to [Colin's review on #2295](#2295 (comment)): after the first log line, a trace backend that keeps throwing loses phases silently. [NIX-1920](https://linear.app/nvidia/issue/NIX-1920). ## How? - The sink gets the agent's `nixlTelemetry *` (null when telemetry is off). Drops accumulate in an atomic and are emitted as one delta per flush, outside the staging queue, like `agent_telemetry_events_dropped`, so a backend that keeps throwing never crowds out real telemetry. `telemetry_` now outlives the engines, which record from progress threads until they join. - `AGENT_TRACE_PHASES_DROPPED` goes before `AGENT_TELEMETRY_EVENTS_DROPPED`, which must stay last and moves from 20 to 21. Readers exact-match `TELEMETRY_VERSION`, so none can misread the renumbered stream. - V3 because an exporter built before this change would misattribute: it would report trace-phase drops (now 20) as `agent_telemetry_events_dropped_total` and skip the renumbered 21. The loader now refuses it, and `NIXL_TELEMETRY_PLUGIN_API_VERSION` names the current version. Out-of-tree telemetry plugins must be rebuilt. <!-- This is an auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> ## Summary by CodeRabbit * **New Features** * Added the `agent_trace_phases_dropped` telemetry counter for backend trace phases that could not be recorded. Counts are reported per flush, and the first drop per backend is logged. * Added support for the counter in telemetry exporters and user-facing documentation. * **Bug Fixes** * Trace-recording failures no longer cause transfers to fail. Dropped phases are counted when tracing and telemetry are enabled and the metric is allowed. * **Compatibility** * Telemetry plugins must use API version V3; V2 plugins are rejected. * Updated the telemetry data format to version 5. <!-- end of auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> --------- Signed-off-by: Efraim Eygin <eeygin@nvidia.com>
What?
Data plugins cannot emit tracing today: the only thing core hands a backend at construction is
nixlBackendInitParams, which carries no tracer and no sink. This adds the path from core into a plugin.nixlBackendTraceSink— a core-owned interface, reached through atraceSinkpointer appended tonixlBackendInitParams, null when tracing is off.nixl_trace_stage_t:SUBMIT,WIRE_SUBMITTED,WIRE_COMPLETED,NOTIF_SENT,NOTIF_RECEIVED,REMOTE_OBSERVED, plus a genericSTAGEcarrying a plugin label. Core turns each recorded phase into a span.NIXL_PLUGIN_API_VERSION1 → 2, plus the first test that check has ever had.Tracing stays internal: the sink header is not installed and
backend_aux.honly forward-declares the type, so the public delta is one forward declaration, one pointer, and the version macro. No plugin emits stages yet — UCX and libfabric map onto the vocabulary in their own PRs.Why?
NIX-1876, a child of NIX-1537 (distributed tracing). Trace backends are separate
.sos from data plugins, so a plugin cannot call thenixl::tracefacade directly and backend work shows up only as elapsed time inside a core span. This is the prerequisite for in-backend visibility. How?
Appending to
nixlBackendInitParamsmoves no existing field offset and the sink is a pure interface, so a plugin rebuilt from older source keeps working. The version bump is what makes it safe in the other direction: a plugin built against the new header and loaded by an older core would read a field that core never allocated. Why strict equality rather than a version floor
A floor that keeps accepting version 1 preserves the existing hazard instead of removing it. The macro has read
1since March 2025 (#25) while the ABI broke underneath it at least three times:nixlBackendEnginesizeofand derived member offsets shiftsupportsProgTh()andprogress()virtualsSuch a binary already miscomputes offsets or calls the wrong vtable slot today, silently; after the bump it is refused with a clear error. All three version checks in
nixl_plugin_manager.cppare exact-match, and telemetry's V1→V2 (#1522) kept strict equality. Cost is a rebuild: every in-tree plugin passes the macro symbolically.Tested in normal, ASan, UBSan and TSan builds.
