I've retained descriptor-ring ownership through completion and reposting, and partial launch failures now drain submitted work before reporting an error. The ASan and UBSan lifecycle replay also covers failed cancellation followed by polling and release. Could you enable the CUDA and DOCA build and GPUNetIO runner for this head? My available H100 environment has CUDA 12.9; DOCA and RDMA devices are unavailable. |

updated against main after #2290 and resolved the conflicts. reused its descriptor ownership and kept the device guards and error handling. also kept failed releases attached to their handle, including completion errors. |

@ZenAlexa please rebase, fix conflicts and address comment. Did you check if/how performance is affected by this change? |
Preserve peer-GPU transfers, paired writes, READ coalescing, and request release state from main. Move completionStatus into the existing backend translation unit and remove its dedicated header and build entries. Retain inline constexpr header constants as requested in the review. the GPU/NIC latency and throughput comparison is still pending, so this is now a draft. merged current main and addressed the header comment. the remaining check needs DOCA 3.5 or newer and a working GPUNetIO GPU/NIC transfer setup, using the two-process stream workload and NIXLBench against main. |

|
@ZenAlexa should I convert this PR into a draft and you tell me once you have perf info and it's ready to be merged? |
Yeah it's ok. Also I'll test asap. |
what
preserve each gpunetio request and notification until its final consumer releases ownership.
why
a prepared or completed handle can outlive descriptor and completion ring wraps. early reuse can overwrite a retained notification, associate release with another request, or lose track of work after a partial launch failure.
how
integrated main
13a896bdatd29255c7, retaining #2290 and the newer peer-gpu, paired-write, and read-coalescing paths.positions, descriptor reservations, andpostLock_. descriptor storage stays with the handle until release, including fragmented allocations.the completion-status helper now lives in the existing backend source; its separate header and build entries are removed.

Current main integration — 2026-10-19
The GPUNetIO ownership changes remain identical to
16611f1cafter the mainline merge. The current checkout and caller paths were rechecked; the host and historical native results below retain their original revisions. Kept this PR in draft while the requested GPU/NIC performance comparison is pending. The available H200 host exposes eight RDMA device names and GPU/NIC topology.
ibv_devinfo -d mlx5_bond_0 -vfails to open the device, and the DOCA runtime/development libraries are unavailable. No GPUNetIO native workload or performance measurement ran on this host. The project GPU/NIC checks requested below remain outstanding.on october 17, rebuilt the host scenarios from the integrated source and ran them with addresssanitizer and undefinedbehaviorsanitizer.
git diff --checkpassed.the host scenarios replace cuda launches, completion polling, and notification transport with recording fixtures. they cover host ownership and control flow. the concurrent sender fixture uses an atomic cpu mailbox.
historical native validation remains tied to the earlier revision: ubuntu 24.04, gcc 13.3, cuda 12.9.86, doca 3.5.0098, and
sm_90compiled and linked the plugin, kernels, stream test, and regression executables. the earlier unit run passed 156 cases with three skips. earlier full-suite failures included unavailableio_uring, missing ucx, and telemetry counter warnings.the remaining project checks are a linux plugin build and two-process execution on a compatible gpu and nic with doca 3.5 or newer. gpu/nic latency and throughput against current main remain unmeasured. cpu-gpu memory visibility remains unverified. the existing stream scenario retains a handle across 4,096-request notification churn, checks both received payloads after repost, and uses a 120-second deadline.
Project CI: Please run a Linux plugin build with DOCA 3.5 or newer, the two-process GPUNetIO stream workload, and NIXLBench against current main on the project GPU/NIC setup. These checks cover native publication ordering, retained-request correctness, latency, and throughput beyond the host scenarios above.
