feat(sidecar): restart the TensorRT-LLM sidecar when TensorRT-LLM stops serving - #17973
The TensorRT-LLM sidecar now exits when TensorRT-LLM stops serving after startup. Its supervisor restarts it, and it registers again once TensorRT-LLM is back. This is the TensorRT-LLM version of #17728 and uses #17727's engine_lost() hook.
What counts as lost: any status other than SERVING, the Watch ending or failing, or the Watch not opening within the connect-attempt timeout. Any of these resolves engine_lost() with "TensorRT-LLM engine lost: ". The error includes the engine's instance ID.
Then: the worker withdraws from discovery, drains, and exits with code 1, as on SIGTERM. Kubernetes restarts only the sidecar container, and the restarted sidecar waits for TensorRT-LLM as at any startup.
Readiness (inference) is not watched, so a pause or other readiness change never restarts the sidecar.
Older images: a TensorRT-LLM image without the health service answers NotFound or Unimplemented. The sidecar then logs one warning and keeps today's behavior.
One exit path: the existing exits on stale routing load (30 s) and on a new engine identity (multinode) now resolve through engine_lost(), instead of a separate select! in lib.rs.
Messages: their text is kept, wrapped as "TensorRT-LLM engine lost: (instance )".
One difference: during an ongoing SIGTERM drain, a routing-monitor failure no longer changes the exit code to 1, because the Worker stops polling engine_lost() once shutdown starts.
Drain on SIGTERM: TensorRT-LLM stops with a fixed 5 s grace, so requests that run longer are cut and left to request migration, as today.
Pod deletion takes this path. Kubernetes stops the engine container before the native sidecar.
Effect: on TensorRT-LLM's graceful stop the liveness Watch ends, so the worker leaves discovery as soon as TensorRT-LLM starts stopping.
Cost: the sidecar logs the loss at error level and exits with code 1, rather than exiting cleanly on its own SIGTERM.
Unchanged: startup, generate(), the manifests and their probes. A gRPC liveness probe would restart engines on images older than #20437, so the probes stay as they are. Request migration and KV events are out of scope.
Stack: #17727 → this PR, alongside #17728 (vLLM) and #17972 (SGLang). All three touch separate parts of the shared testkit files, so they merge in any order once #17727 lands. Design: #17643.
Where should the reviewer start?
watch_liveness in lib/sidecar/trtllm/src/client.rs, then engine_lost() and the end of start() in lib/sidecar/trtllm/src/engine.rs.
Validation
New tests
Mocker test (sidecar_mocker_integration): trtllm_engine_lost_on_liveness_not_serving. engine_lost() stays pending while liveness reports SERVING. After liveness goes NOT_SERVING, it resolves with EngineShutdown.
Process test (router_sidecar_mocker_integration, real sidecar binary): trtllm_engine_loss_withdraws_worker_and_fails_the_process.
The TensorRT-LLM fixture stops after the sidecar has registered.
The worker must leave discovery while the process is still running. The process must then exit with code 1 and log "TensorRT-LLM engine lost".
Existing monitor tests (lib/sidecar/trtllm/src/tests/kv_routing.rs): the stale-load, restarted-engine and metadata-outage tests now go through engine_lost(), with the same message assertions.
Fixture support: the testkit's TensorRT-LLM fixture serves liveness, with a setter. The LPX fixture is unchanged.
Dependency:tonic-health 0.13.1, already a workspace dependency used by dynamo-llm and the TensorRT-LLM Mocker, is added to the TensorRT-LLM sidecar and to the testkit's dev-dependencies. The root and Python-bindings lockfiles record it.
Local runs on 80f825e (since then: the Python-bindings lockfile line and a tighter Mocker-test assertion):
cargo fmt --check and cargo clippy --all-targets -D warnings are clean for backend-common and the sidecar crates.
cargo test for backend-common, the four sidecars, sidecar-common and the testkit: 666 passed, 0 failed, 9 ignored (the existing ignored live-server tests). This includes both new tests and the three monitor tests. The testkit process tests ran with --test-threads=8.
Add optional availability(), recover() and on_recovered() engine hooks. The worker withdraws its endpoint while the engine is NotReady, also withdraws the model card while it is Lost, calls recover(), re-registers fresh metadata with the caller's taints, and calls on_recovered() before the endpoint is routable again. Operator pause survives recovery. Pause, resume, taint, recovery and shutdown discovery writes share one lock, record an unknown state before each write so a dropped HTTP request cannot leave a stale record, and skip endpoint writes that discovery already matches. A prefill worker whose engine is lost skips the shutdown drain.

The serve loop waited on LLMEngine::recover() without watching its
endpoint, so a runtime shutdown during recovery left the worker waiting
and could re-register the model card after shutdown started. Race
recover() against the endpoint and the shutdown token; the discovery
writes before and after it still run to completion.

Engine recovery now records the new model card on the admission gate
created at startup (`WorkerAdmissionGate::get`), since #17481 made
`get_or_create` fallible.
Signed-off-by: Julien Darve <jdarve@NVIDIA.com>
A discovery write that failed when the engine's availability changed was
only logged, so one transient error could leave a healthy worker out of
discovery until its next change. The serve loop now retries the sync
every second until it succeeds.
Also correct the registration docs, which said these writes are never
cancelled, and the comment on skipping the drain for a lost engine.
Signed-off-by: Julien Darve <jdarve@NVIDIA.com>
Replace the availability, recover and on_recovered hooks with one optional
LLMEngine hook, engine_lost(). When it resolves, the Worker shuts down as on
SIGTERM (withdraw from discovery, grace period, drain, cleanup) under the
same shutdown deadline, and returns the engine's error so the process exits
and its supervisor restarts it. Engines that don't implement it never
resolve it, so their behavior is unchanged.

…ps serving
After startup the sidecar follows TensorRT-LLM's gRPC `liveness` health. When
it stops reporting SERVING, or the watch ends or fails, engine_lost() resolves:
the worker withdraws, drains and exits with code 1 so its supervisor restarts
it. Engines without `liveness` keep today's behavior. The existing stale-load
and new-identity checks move onto the same hook, replacing their own select!.
Signed-off-by: Julien Darve <jdarve@NVIDIA.com>
The Python bindings workspace has its own Cargo.lock that includes the
TensorRT-LLM sidecar, so it needs the new tonic-health dependency too. The
Mocker test now also checks that the liveness watch, not the routing monitor,
reported the loss.

Walkthrough
The worker now supports an optional engine-loss hook and uses its shutdown flow when the hook resolves. The TensorRT-LLM sidecar reports gRPC liveness and routing failures through the hook. Tests cover loss detection, worker withdrawal, cleanup, and sidecar exit.
LLMEngine gains an optional engine_lost hook. The worker handles a resolved hook through its existing bounded shutdown flow and returns the engine error. A worker test checks withdrawal, cleanup, and the returned error.
The TensorRT-LLM engine watches gRPC liveness and routing supervision, records a failure reason, and exposes loss through engine_lost. Test fixtures provide controllable liveness status, and tests cover liveness and routing-loss detection.
Worker integration and process tests lib/sidecar/trtllm/src/lib.rs, lib/sidecar/testkit/tests/router_sidecar_mocker_integration.rs
The leader path runs the worker directly and returns its result. The integration test checks that the worker withdraws before the sidecar exits after engine loss.
A compatible engine without a registered liveness service could cause the sidecar to withdraw and repeatedly restart. Handle that response before merging unless the compatibility risk is explicitly accepted.

Explanation
The changed backend-common shutdown hook, TensorRT-LLM client and engine logic, routing tests, fixture support, dependencies, and integration tests support the engine-loss and restart behavior in #17721 or its required #17727 foundation. The summary shows no demonstrated changes for KV events, request migration, or unrelated functionality.

Explanation
PR #17973 implements the liveness watcher, engine-loss path, routing-monitor migration, fixture support, and core tests required by #17721. The PR does not implement all coding requirements in #17721. The PR description states that manifests and probes remain unchanged, but #17721 requires native gRPC readiness and liveness probes in the single-node manifests. The change summary lists no README update, although #17721 requires documentation of TensorRT-LLM's fixed 5-second SIGTERM grace. The committed tests cover NOT_SERVING, but the summary provides no tests for a liveness Watch that ends or errors, which #17721 explicitly requires.
Resolution
Update the single-node manifests to use the required native gRPC probes. Update the README with the fixed 5-second SIGTERM grace behavior. Add committed tests for liveness Watch end and Watch error, and retain the existing NOT_SERVING coverage.

[P3] No test covers a clean end of the liveness Watch, which is how TensorRT-LLM reports a graceful stop. lib/sidecar/trtllm/src/client.rs:434, with a tested test inline for a follow-up.
Open items:
The resolved CodeRabbit thread on client.rs:432 asks to treat a first SERVICE_UNKNOWN as "no liveness service". Its premise does not hold. The health servicer of TensorRT-LLM registers liveness in its constructor. In TensorRT-LLM 1.3.0rc29, 1.4.0rc0, 1.4.0rc1 and 1.4.0rc2, the OpenEngine server registers no health service at all. Against 1.4.0rc2, the sidecar of this head gets Unimplemented, as the code expects.
container/context.yaml pins TensorRT-LLM 1.4.0rc2, which does not contain NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM#20437. With that image, the new watch only logs its warning. This review did not run a TensorRT-LLM image that serves liveness, and no CI job before merge runs this sidecar against a real TensorRT-LLM.
What this review measured.
Merge with main at 9e4cdef873 by git merge-tree: no conflict. The squash adds only the two TensorRT-LLM commits 80f825e1f6 and 74be53a150: 11 files, +198/-25, with the same changed lines. lib/backend-common at this head is the same tree that #17727 merged.
The landed commit 37144cc68d has the same tree as a merge of this head into its parent 1c537be8c9, with the same changed lines. That parent also has #17972, which changes the same testkit files. On the landed tree, dynamo-trtllm-sidecar lib tests 84 passed, sidecar_mocker_integration 49 passed and trtllm_multimodal 10 passed. router_sidecar_mocker_integration passed 39 of 40. The SGLang prefill test timed out again, and it passed alone.
Lock files: no package is added and no version changes in the three lock files. cargo metadata --locked and cargo tree --locked pass in ., lib/bindings/python and lib/runtime/examples. With the Python lock file of 80f825e1f6, cargo tree --locked fails. cargo deny check reports the same 27 advisories at this head and at the merge base.
Tests on the merge with main: dynamo-trtllm-sidecar lib tests 84 passed, sidecar_mocker_integration 48 passed, trtllm_multimodal 10 passed. With the request plane on 127.0.0.1, router_sidecar_mocker_integration passed 38 of 39 in each of two runs. In one run the vLLM prefill test timed out, and it passed alone three times. In the other run the SGLang prefill test timed out, and main shows the same SGLang time-out in one of two runs.
Tests at this head: dynamo-trtllm-sidecar lib tests 80 passed, with the three kv_routing monitor tests. The 4 trtllm_ tests in sidecar_mocker_integration and the 8 in router_sidecar_mocker_integration pass, with both new tests.
watch_liveness against gRPC health servers that this review controlled: NOT_SERVING, UNKNOWN, an unknown status value and a first SERVICE_UNKNOWN give a loss. A clean end gives "liveness stream ended". A server error or a dropped server gives "liveness stream failed". A Watch that does not open gives "liveness watch did not open in 300ms". NotFound and Unimplemented stay pending with exactly one warning.
Startup: TensorRT-LLM sets liveness to SERVING in the next statement after its gRPC server starts. The sidecar opens its Watch only after its control calls succeed. TensorRT-LLM sets NOT_SERVING only after a fatal executor failure. Thus a short state at startup does not reach the sidecar.
Deliberate breaks: if the watch ignores NOT_SERVING, trtllm_engine_lost_on_liveness_not_serving fails. If the watch never starts, that test and trtllm_engine_loss_withdraws_worker_and_fails_the_process fail. If Unimplemented counts as a loss, the three kv_routing monitor tests fail.
Real engine, older image: TensorRT-LLM 1.4.0rc2 with Qwen/Qwen3-0.6B on one GPU, next to the CI sidecar image of this head. The sidecar logs one warning with code=Unimplemented and registers. After a graceful stop of TensorRT-LLM, the sidecar keeps running and stays registered. After a SIGKILL of TensorRT-LLM, the sidecar keeps running and logs nothing new. A sidecar that starts while TensorRT-LLM does not listen retries for 109 s. It is ready less than 1 s after TensorRT-LLM starts its server, and then it registers.

[P3] No test covers a clean end of the liveness Watch, which is how TensorRT-LLM reports a graceful stop. lib/sidecar/trtllm/src/client.rs:434. If this arm waits forever instead, every test of this PR still passes. Please add a test for this arm in a follow-up, such as the one below.
A deliberate break of this arm passes every test of this PR. The test below fails on it.
The break: Ok(None) => return std::future::pending().await,. With it, these runs pass on the merge of this head with main at 9e4cdef: cargo test -p dynamo-trtllm-sidecar --lib (84 passed), the 4 trtllm_ tests in sidecar_mocker_integration, and the 8 trtllm_ tests in router_sidecar_mocker_integration.
trtllm_engine_loss_withdraws_worker_and_fails_the_process still passes with the break, because the fixture drops its server and the sidecar gets a stream error, not a clean end.
The test below fails with the break (timed out: engine lost on liveness Watch end). It passes on this head and on the merge with main.
