- Line 206: Update OpenEngineControlServicer._engine_is_healthy and its polling
flow so a recoverable TypeError from _llm._check_health is handled within the
current poll rather than terminating _monitor_inference_health; subsequent polls
must still observe a healthy result while liveness remains SERVING. Add a test
that raises once and then returns healthy.
Review comments at @tests/unittest/grpc/openengine/test_openengine.py:
- Line 22: Move the health_pb2 and health_pb2_grpc import below the existing
pytest.importorskip("grpc") call so environments without gRPC skip the test
module before importing optional health packages.

tests/unittest/check_pip_install.pyis a standalone wheel-metadata script and is never collected by pytest. The OpenEngine tests usepytest.importorskip("grpc"), but no test covers loadingconftest.pyand collecting one of those modules whengrpcis unavailable.Add the test in a module that does not itself require
grpc. Keeptest_node.pyandtest_frontend_lifecycle.pyout of this case because they importgrpcdirectly.Test coverage summary:
test_coordinator.pyandtest_openengine.pyadd health, watch, recovery, shutdown, listener-isolation, and monitor-error cases. Both are listed intests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml. No test was added for no-gRPC collection. Coverage is insufficient for that changed path.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Took a closer look. The custom _health.py makes sense (the stock aio servicer drops other watchers when one disconnects), but I’d drop the separate health port. The vLLM version adds Health to the existing gRPC listener and adds no new port. If loopback is the concern, handle that in the pod (NetworkPolicy, or have the Dynamo sidecar answer the k8s probes, since it’s already watching the engine) rather than adding a second listener. Two more things: (1) use the real proto service name instead of inference/liveness so Dynamo can treat every engine the same way, and (2) once the executor fails, keep it NOT_SERVING instead of allowing a later poll to restore it. That removes the need for the sidecar to revalidate the engine before re-registering, and ideally the failure is pushed from the executor rather than polled every second. |

Approving — the comments below are optional touch-ups, not blockers.
This defines a new Kubernetes-facing probe contract (service names, port semantics, Watch guarantees) that Dynamo will build against. Please file a JIRA for it instead of [None]; the title tag is how that contract gets found later.
Two whole-PR points:
- The port-equality rule is now validated three times (CLI,
launch_server,OpenEngineServer.__init__). One place with a test is enough; the__init__check is the only one that also covers theport == 0ephemeral case, so I'd keep that one and the CLI one. - The description's "a failed poll sets inference to NOT_SERVING; later successful polls restore it" is only true for coordinator/group failures. For an engine-level
_check_health() == False, the existingsupervise()loop inlaunch_serverfails the whole process within a second, so there is no recovery window. Worth stating in the README so operators don't expect a flapping engine to come back on its own.
Unrelated churn: the f-string cleanups in check_pip_install.py and the line re-wraps in test_coordinator.py are fine but not mentioned; a one-line note in the description would help the next reader.

Comments on alignment with the engine health probe contract in Dynamo #14897. The shutdown semantics comment is non-blocking.

Description
OpenEngine serves standard
grpc.health.v1.Healthon its gRPC listener. Health, Inference, and Control use one port.Check("inference")reports whether the engine and frontend group can accept inference.Control.Healthuses the same readiness conditions.Check("")mirrors inference.Check("liveness")reports server lifecycle, so temporary inference unavailability does not trigger a liveness failure.Watchsends the current status and later observed status changes. Rapid changes can coalesce; the stream reports the latest state and is not an event log. A failed monitor poll sets inference toNOT_SERVING; a later successful poll can restore it. A poll that exceeds five seconds also withdraws inference, with at most one engine check in flight. Known fatal executor or worker failures set both inference and liveness toNOT_SERVINGand stop the serving process; temporary readiness failures leave livenessSERVING. The production launcher also checks startup engine health with a deadline. It uses the published engine status for multi-frontend readiness, so coordinator requests do not run the predicate on the event loop.Control.Healthand standard Health use the same engine predicate; the background poll can lag a live Control check by a poll interval or the check deadline. Graceful shutdown sends inferenceNOT_SERVING, preserves liveness until the listener closes, and ends active streams. A background task checks engine health once each second; Health RPCs read published status.Single-port flow
flowchart LR K["Kubernetes native gRPC probes"] -->|"Pod IP:30001, Health.Check"| O["OpenEngine gRPC<br/>0.0.0.0:30001"] D["Dynamo sidecar"] -->|"127.0.0.1:30001<br/>Health.Watch, Inference, Control"| O M["Background health monitor"] -->|"Published status"| OThe port is an example. Start the same-Pod sidecar deployment with
--host 0.0.0.0 --port 30001 --grpc --grpc-protocol openengine. Use native gRPC startup and liveness probes on port30001, serviceliveness. Use serviceinferencefor the readiness probe. This bind makes Inference and Control reachable through the Pod IP. Those RPCs have no general client authentication or encryption. Review the deployment's network exposure. If only same-Pod clients need access, bind to loopback and use exec probes instead. The serving ingress and node metadata listeners now report the same engine-incarnation UUID through
GetServerInfo.instance_idandServerInfo.extra.trtllm_node.engine_id. The Dynamo sidecar should useWatch("inference")on loopback. After a lost stream or an engine identity change, it must validate health and KV state again before restoring worker registration. No Dynamo sidecar PR exists yet.Validation
Control.Healthexception cases and the CLI install-hint test passed on the previous PR revision.grpciopresent andgrpcio-health-checkingabsent, all seven dependent OpenEngine test modules skipped cleanly during collection. With both packages installed, the focused health and coordinator suite passed (32 tests).Image build
No published TensorRT-LLM image is known to contain this change. The cached image used for CPU tests (
nvcr.io/nvidia/tensorrt-llm/release:1.4.0rc0.dev202610080650) supplied dependencies only; the tests mounted this PR's source. Build and identify an image from commit69c3fd5729or a later PR revision before updating a DGD image reference.OpenEngine gRPC does not yet expose sleep or weight updates. When added, those operations must mark inference unavailable while it cannot run.
Dependency maintenance
OpenEngine maintainers own Health API behavior and compatibility with
grpcio-health-checking. The package is a base TensorRT-LLM requirement. Cached CI images can temporarily lack it; dependent OpenEngine test modules skip during collection until the image is refreshed. The locally cached release image hasgrpciobut lacksgrpcio-health-checking. The exact pre-merge CI image was not available locally for package inspection. Requirements changes receive requirements CODEOWNER review. Adopt health-checking updates after checking theirgrpcioand protobuf requirements, wheel installation, and OpenEngine Check/Watch CI tests. Route Health behavior failures to OpenEngine maintainers and dependency resolution failures to requirements maintainers. The runtimegrpciofloor is1.73.1; the proto generator remains pinned separately to1.67.1.
