Both findings from the earlier round are fixed, and the type fix that landed while I was reviewing is the correct one of the two candidates I tested. I verified each result by execution and not by reading. No P0, P1, P2 or P3 stays open.
What I verified this round, and where verification stopped
The download limit at image_loader.py:248 now applies whenever shared caching is configured. I proved the new case by mutation. It fails against the d29b6e405 copy of image_loader.py and passes against the current one, while three neighboring cases pass in both runs. The full file plus test_image_loader_metrics.py gives 56 passed in the vLLM runtime test image.
The redis ceiling at pyproject.toml:23 now accepts the 8.1.0 client the vLLM image already runs. I drove the real client on 5.0.0, 7.4.1 and 8.1.0. The constructor kwargs, the three operations and the fail-open exception tuple hold across the whole range.
The three runtime requirements lines are needed. The SGLang and TensorRT-LLM runtime test images carry no redis today, and all three frameworks import image_loader at module scope. The dynamo-runtime image gets redis from the wheel instead, because its install carries no --no-deps.
The ceiling raise broke the mypy guard, and 995a4ff14 fixed it the right way. Widening the return type would have moved the error onto BytesIO in image_loader.py:232, where a str raises a TypeError that the surrounding except (OSError, ValueError) does not catch. The cast keeps the contract instead. mypy 1.18.2 on the three touched files now reports Success: no issues found in 3 source files under redis 8.1.0. I left the full measurement on the pyproject.toml thread.
The new tests do run in CI. The job dynamo-runtime / test / sequential cuda13.0, amd64 selects this file by marker and passed on d124b64c2.
The push shape is two plain fast-forward commits, one on top of d29b6e405 and one on top of d124b64c2. The compare API reports ahead 1, behind 0 for each, and the issue timeline records no head_ref_force_pushed event after 2026-09-17.
I merged the current main tip, ae5ca99fb, into the head. The merge was clean with no conflicts, and mypy stays clean on it. main also edits pyproject.toml, and the redis line survives untouched.
The repository guards pass on the changed files and leave the tree clean: ruff, black, isort, requirements-txt-fixer, check-yaml, check-toml, trailing-whitespace and end-of-file-fixer.
Verification stopped at three places. I did not pull the 995a4ff14 runtime images from the registry, so I read the redis version inside them from the mypy output and from the Dockerfiles. I did not test LMCache against any redis version. I ran the cast expression on Python 3.12.3 and 3.14, which covers every shipped image, but not on 3.10, which is the floor in requires-python.
- add an opt-in Redis Cluster/Dragonfly cache for encoded multimodal image bytes - retain the existing per-worker decoded-image LRU and in-flight deduplication - fail open to the origin when shared-cache reads, writes, or deletes fail - validate cached payloads, evict corrupt entries, and refill them from the origin - split Redis connection and I/O timeouts for large image transfers - expose shared-cache GET and SET latency histograms through the existing image-loader metrics registry The cache is disabled by default. It is enabled with `DYN_MM_SHARED_IMAGE_CACHE_ENABLED=1` and configured through `DYN_MM_SHARED_IMAGE_CACHE_URL`, TTL, connect-timeout, and I/O-timeout environment variables. No distributed lock is introduced because this workload does not require cache-stampede protection. - `dynamo_component_image_shared_cache_get_duration_seconds` with bounded outcomes `hit`, `miss`, and `error` - `dynamo_component_image_shared_cache_set_duration_seconds` with bounded outcomes `success` and `error` - both histograms use 1 ms–4 s latency buckets and a bounded `size_bucket` label: `le_64kib`, `le_256kib`, `le_1mib`, `le_4mib`, `le_16mib`, `le_32mib`, `gt_32mib`, or `unknown` GET misses/errors use `size_bucket="unknown"`; SET errors retain the attempted payload size class. Metrics use the image loader's dedicated Prometheus registry to preserve Dynamo's multiprocess initialization order. URLs and cache keys are never used as labels. Workers can share compressed image payloads through a cluster-aware redis-py client, reducing repeated blobproxy/origin downloads across replicas. Existing deployments behave as before unless the feature flag is enabled. - 53 image-loader and metrics tests passed; one expected HEIF test skipped because test-only encoding support is not installed - Python compilation passed - isort, Black, flake8, Ruff, and codespell passed for the cache changes - `git diff --check` passed The repository-wide pytest marker report remains blocked by a pre-existing collection error in `test_vllm_processor_unit.py` where `request` is used as a parametrized argument. Signed-off-by: Dao Le <daole@inferact.ai> - read `x-session-affinity` at the Rust HTTP boundary and propagate it through both agent context and router session affinity - pass the propagated session ID into the vLLM image loader - scope local decoded-image LRU entries, in-flight fetch deduplication, and Dragonfly encoded-image entries by a hashed session identifier - gate session scoping behind `DYN_MM_IMAGE_CACHE_SESSION_SCOPED=1` (default off); when enabled without a valid session scope, bypass image caches This was originally stacked on ai-dynamo#261. Now that ai-dynamo#261 is merged, this PR targets `kimi-dev`. - `cargo test -p dynamo-llm --no-default-features session_affinity_ --lib` (35 passed) - targeted agent-context/header tests (4 passed) - ImageLoader unit tests (50 passed, 1 expected HEIF skip) - Black, isort, Ruff, codespell, targeted rustfmt, Python compile, and `git diff --check` - vLLM request-processor runtime tests were not run locally because vLLM is unavailable on macOS; the modified module and tests compile successfully Ported from Inferact/dynamo#264 to ai-dynamo/dynamo main. Signed-off-by: Dao Le <daole@inferact.ai> ## Summary - fail open when redis-py raises `RedisClusterException` during shared image-cache reads, writes, or corrupt-entry deletion - preserve origin image fetching and decoding when Dragonfly is unavailable - add regression coverage for the observed `Timeout connecting to server` failure ## Root cause redis-py defines `RedisClusterException` directly under `Exception`, outside the `RedisError` hierarchy. The shared cache only caught `RedisError`, so Dragonfly cluster connection timeouts escaped the optional cache layer and failed uncached multimodal requests instead of falling back to the image origin. ## Impact When Dragonfly is down, image-bearing requests now continue through origin fetch/decode. Cache read, write, and cleanup failures remain logged and recorded as cache errors without becoming image-load failures. ## Validation - ImageLoader unit tests: 52 passed, 1 expected HEIF skip - reproduced the exception hierarchy with supported redis-py 5.0.0 and 7.4.1 - Black, isort, Ruff, codespell, Python compile, and `git diff --check` Ported from Inferact/dynamo#265 to ai-dynamo/dynamo main.

Main now bounds every remote media download by DYN_MM_MAX_FILE_SIZE_MB (ai-dynamo#15005), so the shared-cache-only wording in the environment table no longer matches ImageLoader after the rebase. Compare
redis-py's RedisCluster replaces the configured startup node with the addresses the cluster announces. On Kubernetes those are pod IPs, so once every cache node restarts (a single-node Dragonfly pod, or a rolling restart of a multi-node Redis Cluster), running workers keep dialing dead addresses and the shared cache stays off until each worker restarts. Pass dynamic_startup_nodes=False so rediscovery always goes through the configured endpoint, typically a Service in front of the nodes, and disable cluster-level retries so a failed cache operation falls back to the origin instead of retrying (redis-py 8 retries up to 10 times). The async client accepts dynamic_startup_nodes from redis-py 6.2.0, so raise the dependency floor from 5.0.0 to 6.2.0. …ckends Explain that the shared image cache URL is only the discovery endpoint and should be a Service in front of every cache node, and describe single-node Dragonfly, Redis Cluster, and multi-node Dragonfly layouts, including the redis-py 6.2 floor and why a node must not announce the URL's own address. Replace the outage latency sentence: each cache operation is now attempted once, so an unreachable node costs one failed GET and one failed SET, each bounded by the connect or I/O timeout. The PR's only remaining change to lib/llm/src/protocols/agents.rs was a deleted blank line left over from earlier iterations. Restore main's version so the file is no longer part of the diff. Merges origin/main at 938d89b. Two main commits conflicted: - 938d89b (#14614), instrumented_scheduler.py class attributes: kept main's _bench_hybrid_live_state next to _bench_random_kda, followed by this branch's six benchmark evidence attributes. - 938d89b (#14614), instrumented_scheduler.py two-step save path: the kept steady sample is main's copy marked kvwarm_steady_sample, as on the median path, and this branch's last_step reduction, raw sample index and benchmark_measurement block still apply to it. The marker stays on the retained FPM and never enters raw_fpms (deep-copied before reduction). - 9ae086b (#14676), test_vllm_worker_factory.py imports: both _register_request_cache_metrics and _restore_benchmark_workers. Main's giant off-by-batch correction records a point at its measured coordinate after every rank has keyed its benchmark_measurement at the declared one, so the merger would reject the artifact with a measurement identity mismatch. The correction now re-keys every rank's evidence to the recorded point. Main's test_save_records_only_the_steady_fpm now allows for the evidence block on the copied sample; one new test covers the re-key on an attention-DP follower, and the evidence test checks where the steady marker goes. Closes DIS-2912
Why
Multimodal workers each download every image URL themselves, so replicas behind the same origin repeat identical downloads, and the per-worker decoded-image LRU does not help across processes. This adds an opt-in shared cache of encoded image bytes in Redis Cluster or Dragonfly, in front of the origin and failing open to it on any cache error. Deployments where one URL serves different content per session can partition the caches by the session identity the frontend already derives from
x-dynamo-session-idor agent headers. Cache nodes on Kubernetes change IPs on restart, so the client always rediscovers through the configured endpoint (typically a Service) instead of the node addresses it last learned, and does not retry a failed cache call.Effect
Every cache node gets a new IP while traffic is idle, then traffic resumes (2 × Qwen3-VL-2B workers on Kubernetes):

Porting notes
This is a port of internal Inferact changes onto upstream main. Adaptations relative to the originals:
Image.UnidentifiedImageError/ValueError) rather than Inferact-specific exception typesregister_image_loader_metricsexports only the shared-cache latency histograms and a cache-entries gauge; the Inferact per-worker fetch-outcome/hit/miss counters depend on separate internal metrics infrastructure not included hereDependency
redis>=6.2.0,<9.0.0is new and backs the shared cache client. 6.2.0 is the first release whose asyncioRedisClusteracceptsdynamic_startup_nodes, which seed rediscovery needs; 6.1.1 cannot construct the client. The upper bound excludes the untested next major.--no-deps.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
