Implements AIC-1890. Base: main; risk: medium.

Agentic replay applies runtime-owned feedback in graph-ordinal order, separates causal terminal from resource quiescence, and exposes state-preserving settled steps in aggregated and P/D runtimes. Request identity and a canonical lifecycle transcript travel across the workload/runtime boundary. Equal-time events and handoffs use stable semantic ordering; the first step settles zero-time scaling and worker startup while preserving the telemetry baseline.

Client lanes now count whole client plays. A successful play releases its lane after all authored requests finish, including delayed and background requests. Under the existing strict failure policy, undispatched work is skipped and the lane waits for all dispatched requests to become terminal. The next play can then submit while earlier server cleanup is pending. Quiescence still tracks P/D source holds, cancellation actions, play settlement, and final drain. Late cleanup cannot release a lane twice, and request completion does not flush reusable prefix-cache entries.

This boundary follows AIPerf's root-finished and no-outstanding-descendants tree condition. Final decode/observed failure is a client-terminal proxy: HTTP/SSE delivery and client teardown latency are not modeled. The existing strict failed-play policy is not full AIPerf error-policy parity.

Review order:

  1. loadgen/driver.rs / components/admission.rs: client completion versus resource settlement, feedback ordering, and lifecycle transitions.
  2. event.rs, agg.rs, and disagg.rs: timestamp fixed points, stable handoff order, and pause/resume.
  3. Driver and P/D regressions: delayed nodes, background terminals, failed/canceled/rejected requests, late cleanup, and deterministic transcripts.

Includes main 8c4929d3544938b5878430236dd861a7f5412237. Stack: main → #121 → #122 → #190. Conflict resolution preserves #184's idempotent canceled-handoff cleanup, #203's G3 counters/drain behavior, and the client-terminal lane boundary. The moved CLI guide and both sets of CLI tests are retained. CI workflow changes are inherited from main, with no CI changes in these PR diffs.

Earlier validation on downstream stack head 4ea261c626d46da02d7fb7a7f69cf60c54d14e47:

CodeRabbit follow-ups addressed in 2d28ea6fa6cd2575b722a68b85020f6dd02bd58d: live resumption now pauses with in-flight requests before run(); feedback time ordering rejects batches earlier than the last successful batch without changing state. Equal timestamps remain valid and failed batches do not advance the recorded batch timestamp. Both threads have replies and are resolved; the downstream report-propagation thread was already resolved by CodeRabbit.

Current PR #121 validation

At head 7f6e7d602d5a3965e8343aced7071c8caa7d91b4, feedback batches validate all causal terminals and prospective quiescence before applying any lifecycle effects. A rejected batch preserves request state, dependencies, pending cleanup, lifecycle records, and the last successful timestamp. This addresses the mixed valid/invalid batch finding.

  • Both new regressions (premature quiescence and duplicate terminal after valid completion) failed before the fix and pass afterward. They also verify same-time recovery, child dispatch at 12 ms, and monotonic lifecycle timestamps.
  • Full local Rust package: 1,373 passed, 1 existing ignore. Rust formatting and whitespace checks passed.
  • Exact-head Full CI, attempt 2: 53 jobs succeeded, with only release staging skipped as expected for PR validation. Standalone Fast CI, DCO, CODEOWNERS integrity, and CodeRabbit passed. All four inline review threads are resolved.
  • Dynamo currently pins aisimulate-core to =0.12.0-dev.1. When that pin advances to consume this public-field addition, its complete ReplayRequestContext initializer must add agentic: None in the same downstream update; the current pin is unaffected.

📝 Summary

Risk and attention areas

Risk: High. The three areas needing human attention are:

  1. Agentic lifecycle semantics. Client completion, request terminal state, quiescence, background work, and final drain now use separate transitions.
  2. Deterministic ordering. Equal-time events, feedback batches, and runtime handoffs now use explicit semantic ordering.
  3. Resumable runtime state. Aggregated and disaggregated runtimes now preserve state across incremental step() calls.

Changed behavior and contracts

  • Added ReplayStepOutcome and step() drivers for both runtime types.
  • Added deterministic event phases and semantic tie-breakers.
  • Made handoff IDs deterministic.
  • Added AgenticRuntimeIdentity to ReplayRequestContext.
  • Added validated agentic feedback and lifecycle transcript APIs.
  • Added JSONL transcript serialization and BLAKE3 digests.
  • Separated client completion from resource quiescence.
  • Updated lane reuse and drain behavior for failures, delayed requests, background requests, cancellation, rejection, and late cleanup.
  • Added lifecycle data to ReplayReport and compact report output.

Evidence supplied

  • Source inspection confirms the new identity contract, step outcomes, deterministic event stages, lifecycle transcript propagation, and stepped-versus-continuous regression coverage.
  • Supplied validation reports 1,381 passing Rust tests, one existing ignored test, and 12 successful native-extension qualification replays.
  • Re-review notes report passing mixed valid/invalid feedback regressions and a request for full CI on the exact fix commit.

Evidence still missing

  • Current review-finding severity counts were not supplied.
  • Full CI completion for the exact fix commit was not supplied.
  • Reviewer approval and merge readiness remain unconfirmed.

Walkthrough

The replay system adds agentic runtime identities, deterministic lifecycle feedback, semantic event ordering, resumable step() execution for aggregation and disaggregation runtimes, and lifecycle transcript data in final reports.

Explanation

The new agentic identity field is dropped at the reporting boundary. WorkloadDriver now places AgenticRuntimeIdentity in ReplayRequestContext (protocol.rs:62-63, driver.rs:1293), but TraceCollector::on_request_context copies only authored/session/turn/metadata (report.rs:1021-1034). PerRequestRecord has no agentic identity field, so lane, root, parent, and cache IDs do not reach report serialization or the Python/CLI outputs. The PR tests cover driver identity creation and Rust lifecycle behavior, but no test covers this context-to-report path. The new compact lifecycle fields (agentic_lifecycle_event_count and agentic_lifecycle_digest, report.rs:328-333) also have no Python binding or CLI assertion; the Python code only passes unknown native fields through generically (runner.py:1476-1492), and the CLI writes them without testing them (main.py:191-225).

Resolution

Trace ReplayRequestContext.agentic through TraceCollector and PerRequestRecord, or explicitly remove the reporting-boundary claim if the identity is not report data. Preserve the identity in per-request serialization and verify it in both aggregated and disaggregated paths. Add Rust serde compatibility tests for omitted agentic fields and exact report assertions for lifecycle count and digest. Add a Python binding test that runs an agentic replay and checks both lifecycle keys, plus a CLI test that checks the saved JSON and JSON stdout. Document the lifecycle output keys and the per-request identity shape in the replay and CLI documentation.

Full details: Modeling And Data Evidence

Explanation

The PR changes replay selection and timing behavior, including agentic admission, equal-time event ordering, and predicted timing paths. The diff adds regression tests that compare continuous and stepped runs and compare reversed feedback order, but these are self-consistency checks. They do not provide a base-versus-head result, an independent oracle, a held-out comparison, or an explained golden diff. The authoritative diff adds no JSON, JSONL, CSV, snapshot, or golden artifact. The lifecycle report exposes only an event count and digest, not a machine-readable before/after performance summary with anomaly checks. The PR description's test counts and claim that qualification JSON is identical are binary-only validation; the AIPerf link provides semantic provenance but not reproducible output evidence.

Resolution

Add a checked-in or attached machine-readable before/after evidence artifact for representative agentic workloads. Include exact inputs, baseline and PR outputs, report fields, timing differences, and anomaly checks. Document the command, revision, and environment needed to reproduce it. For the changed scheduling and timing behavior, also provide either an explained golden diff, an independent oracle such as a directly comparable reference implementation, or a held-out workload comparison.

Full details: Compatibility Boundaries

Explanation

The PR introduces an unsynchronized Rust source-compatibility break. It adds the public agentic field to ReplayRequestContext and the public agentic_lifecycle field to the crate-root ReplayReport. Existing downstream Rust struct literals no longer compile, even though Serde input remains backward-compatible. The repository compatibility rules state that an unavoidable incompatible API change requires a pre-1.0 minor-version bump (docs/core-api.md:256-267), but the workspace, crate, and Python wheel remain at 0.12.0. The Python report path accepts the added flat JSON keys generically, and the diff adds no new artifact, dependency, or Dynamo runtime coupling. Those facts do not remove the Rust public-surface mismatch.

Resolution

Either preserve the 0.12.0 Rust source surface by avoiding new fields on existing public structs and expose the new data through compatible methods or separate extension types, or deliberately make the API change for the next minor release. For the latter, bump the synchronized workspace/crate and wheel versions to the next minor (for example 0.13.0), update docs/artifact-contract.md and release metadata, and add compatibility coverage for downstream ReplayReport and ReplayRequestContext consumers. Keep the one-wheel/one-crate artifact contract and record that the Python and Rust versions remain equal.

Full details: Review Evidence

Explanation

The description reports results and lists relevant boundary cases, including failed, canceled, rejected, delayed, background, cleanup, feedback-validation, and live-resumption coverage. It does not name the exact validation commands. It also does not explicitly distinguish local, fake-runner, parity, and production evidence. The reviewed diff changes no workflow files, and the description does not cite inactive nested workflows as hosted CI evidence.

Resolution

Update the validation section with the exact commands and results. Label each result as local, fake-runner, parity, production, or hosted CI evidence. State clearly which hosted checks ran for the reviewed head and exclude inactive nested workflows from the evidence.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description gives detailed context, review risks, behavioral changes, regression coverage, and CI evidence. However, it does not follow the required template structure and omits the required Codex reviewed commit for the stated medium risk. Modeling or data provenance and Tracking sections are also absent.

🔀 Multi-repo context ai-dynamo/dynamo, ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • The offline Python adapter constructs its public ReplayReport using only native.summary, native.per_request, and native.coverage; any new native agentic_lifecycle field is discarded. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::] components/src/dynamo/replay/api.py:90-100
  • The public Python report model and serialization expose only summary, per_request, coverage, and planner. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::] components/src/dynamo/replay/report.py:45-58
  • An integration test asserts this exact four-key report shape, so exposing the new lifecycle transcript downstream would require updating this adapter and test. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::] lib/bindings/python/tests/replay/test_replay_smoke.py (test_offline_replay_report_serializes_complete_result)

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • No direct consumer of the new agentic identity or lifecycle transcript APIs was found. Its architecture documentation treats Mocker Replay as the owner of request lifecycle/runtime semantics, while AIC supplies forward-pass timing only. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::] docs/universe/index.html:429-435

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • lib/mocker/src/replay/offline/extensions/kv_router/mod.rs:1206-1212 is the only direct ReplayRequestContext literal found and omits the new agentic field. It will require an update when Dynamo consumes the changed aisimulate-core. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Dynamo pins aisimulate-core exactly to 0.12.0-dev.1 in Cargo.toml:58-59, with the same locked version in Cargo.lock:36-39; publishing this contract change requires coordinated dependency/version updates. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • components/src/dynamo/replay/api.py:90-100 drops the native lifecycle transcript when constructing ReplayReport, while components/src/dynamo/replay/report.py:45-58 serializes only the existing four fields. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Existing report fixtures in components/src/dynamo/replay/tests/test_report.py:29-33,59-64 and components/src/dynamo/replay/tests/test_simulation.py:60-74 construct reports with the old four-field shape. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • No references to the changed replay protocol, identity, lifecycle transcript, or stepping APIs were found. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
🔇 Additional comments (5)
crates/core/src/replay/loadgen/driver.rs (2)

1460-1465: Feedback timestamps can still move backward.

The validation accepts any finite non-negative at_ms. A later batch with a lower at_ms records a lower timestamp at a higher lifecycle ordinal, and releases dependents into the simulated past. Track the last applied feedback timestamp and reject a lower value.

This repeats an earlier review comment on the same validation block.

🟡 Minor · Coordinate the Dynamo pin update with this public-field addition. · crates/core/src/replay/loadgen/driver.rs:1299-1299

1299-1299: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Coordinate the Dynamo pin update with this public-field addition. ReplayRequestContext has public fields, no #[non_exhaustive], and no Default derive. The complete Dynamo literal omits agentic, so it will fail to compile when Dynamo changes its exact aisimulate-core pin from 0.12.0-dev.1 to a version containing this field. Keep agentic: None with that future dependency update. The current pin is not broken by this PR, so this is not a current release blocker.

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • lib/mocker/src/replay/offline/extensions/kv_router/mod.rs:1206-1212 constructs ReplayRequestContext without the new agentic field, requiring an update when consuming the new core version. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Cargo.toml:59, lib/bindings/python/Cargo.toml:63, and corresponding lockfiles pin aisimulate-core to 0.12.0-dev.1; release/version updates must be coordinated. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • components/src/dynamo/replay/api.py:90-100 ignores the native lifecycle transcript when creating ReplayReport; components/src/dynamo/replay/report.py:45-58 also does not expose or serialize it. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • No direct references to the changed replay APIs or lifecycle types were found. The repository identifies itself as maintenance-only and directs new development to AISimulate (CONTRIBUTING.md:11-14). [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

Re-review follow-up: verified Dynamo still pins aisimulate-core to =0.12.0-dev.1, and its KV-router test constructs ReplayRequestContext without agentic. The downstream compatibility note applies when that dependency pin advances: the initializer must add agentic: None in the same update. No current Dynamo pin or source change is needed for this PR.

Fast CI and CodeRabbit have completed successfully on 7f6e7d602d5a3965e8343aced7071c8caa7d91b4, with no unresolved review threads. Full CI, attempt 2 is now running after those prerequisites; attempt 1 was canceled while waiting for the separate manual Fast CI prerequisite.

Reviewed 7f6e7d6, including the feedback-batch correction and current main 8c4929d. Mixed valid/invalid feedback now fails before lifecycle effects are applied; both new regressions failed before the fix and pass afterward, with unchanged state on rejection and monotonic same-time recovery.

Validation: full local Rust package 1,373 passed / 1 existing ignore; formatting and whitespace checks passed. Exact-head Full CI attempt 2 completed successfully (53 successful jobs; release staging skipped as expected), and Fast CI, DCO, CODEOWNERS integrity, and CodeRabbit are green. All four review threads are resolved. No remaining actionable issue found in this PR. The future Dynamo pin update must include the documented agentic: None initializer adjustment.
