CABLE depencies on JULES

Whilst co-opting specific land-surface processes from either the CABLE or JULES might be the long term ambition of the project, the more immediate and achievable goal (albeit still complicated) is to: Via a simple namelist switch, enable CABLE to be the LSM executed instead of JULES (both standalone and online), whilst using either (standalone) the JULES I/O or (online) the JULES-UM coupling.

However there are elements of the JULES model which will still be required. These are (but not limited to):

  • Sea Ice - The UM in particular uses components of JULES to evaluate the flux contributions to the atmosphere from sea ice. CABLE has no such equivalent routines and as such is forced to co-opt these components from JULES. In the past this has been quite complicated as the sea-ice components have been a part of the same routines that are used to evaluate land fluxes. This has progressively improved with subsequent versions and it is been agreed to by the JULES-UKMO team that they will endeavour to further isolate these sea ice components.
