Current head f6a449c31ea087b4985b4c2fc4108c63fd5c5038 sets a CPU default for expert-layout tests while preserving per-test 2/4/8-process plans; no production or numerical code changed. The focused CPU/Gloo suite passed 2 cases with 1 optional native skip, and make quality passed. Existing 16-rank validation on combined source d0652f9d2040260e34e94ecbae07da77ee319fa9 remains tied to the earlier head and does not claim an isolated run of this head. Official accelerator CI remains pending.
Earlier test review follow-up (a50fdb6c)
Removed the rank-divergent model fixture and both launchers as requested in #1397. Uniform-model pre-write, dense/load and coordinator-call tests remain; production checkpoint code is unchanged. The scoped CPU tests passed 20 cases. The earlier two-device result on a5f03a608e8c5b0194ce5dfa5c54213e13d5e515 used the removed fixture and is historical evidence only, not supported TP training coverage.
Documentation sync (6d5f7722) and native preflight evidence
The preceding documentation update corrected one source link. The native two-device error-propagation test passed on combined #1374 source a5f03a608e8c5b0194ce5dfa5c54213e13d5e515 (1 passed, 0 skipped). It simulates TP=2 and does not validate real TP training, async/staged saves or cold resume. That is a combined-source result, not a separate exact-head test for this PR.
Earlier checkpoint review fixes (8feba69a)
Dynamic/longrope training is no longer rejected at runtime construction; MultiOptimizer checkpoint save and resume retain their coordinated cache and identity checks. TP > 1 saves with detected expert or EP-sharded model tensors are conservatively rejected before writes, including frozen or custom layouts that might be canonical; checkpoint loads and TP1 are unaffected.
Targeted CPU/Gloo checkpoint and runtime tests passed; the accelerator result is scoped to the combined source below. The two-accelerator error-propagation test passed on combined #1374 source a5f03a608e8c5b0194ce5dfa5c54213e13d5e515 (1 passed, 0 skipped); earlier native evidence remains tied to its original source identity.
Earlier documentation sync (81c8bbea)
Links the adapter context helper and the optimizer save/load call sites requested in #1397, using branch-specific source line numbers. The latest update changes documentation only. Link targets and make quality were checked locally; earlier native evidence remains tied to its original validated source.
Latest preflight review follow-up (3745392a)
The RoPE and composed-Omni pure-configuration checks now reject locally, as requested; checkpoint I/O and allocation failure coordination remain. The distributed contract requires consistent model configuration across ranks. Unexpected one-rank exceptions in those two local guards are no longer synchronized by the guards themselves.
The focused CPU/Gloo suites passed 36 tests; the combined downstream optimizer/PLE/checkpoint regression passed 147 tests. Native results remain tied to their original source identities.
Earlier functional head c917429cf995de30755196ab3951a34ae2e1c4e5
Uses simple same-step bookkeeping to reuse DCPs across HF and epoch saves for single-model and SeedOmni module owners. It also handles an Omni epoch with no new batch after an HF-only epoch. Missing or unknown owners are not counted as saved. Save-time optimizer identity/receipt policing and its synthetic mutation fixtures were removed; persisted generation and trainer-state validation remain. An actual asynchronous Future failure makes standard callbacks require a restart from a complete checkpoint.
72 CPU/Gloo tests passed plus the separate unknown-owner check and make quality. The two-rank tests use real Omni fan-out and two module checkpoint managers, check one DCP write per owner, and restore model parameters, Adam step/m/v and the trainer sidecar. Epoch callback cadence is manually driven and HF export uses prepare_export, not actual safetensors serialization. Independent review passed. Earlier NPU results belong to their original source identities; the final combined source still needs targeted native recovery validation.
Earlier head 2ae3848de2a14b3dff3ae8c027184e9bbb425e14
Fixes same-step HF→epoch duplicate saves for the single-model synchronous MultiOptimizer route using a same-process step/generation/optimizer-identity receipt. The MultiOptimizer manifest overwrite guard remains; #1377 carries the broader ordinary/async/Omni and proven same-output recovery work. Removed reviewer-identified rank-inconsistent configuration tests while retaining uniform rejection and rank-local build-failure coverage. CPU/Gloo: 6 receipt tests, 98 proven-resume tests, 30 trainer-state tests, and the checkpoint/preflight suite passed (one accelerator-only test skipped). The real two-rank receipt test exercises DCP and prepare_export, not HF serialization. Native accelerator validation of this exact head remains pending.
Earlier head 830d6254a9d44ddfdd865749e94415b5e729fa5b
Removes the reviewer-requested cross-rank optimizer leaf consensus and the intentionally divergent-trainability fixture; rank-indexed source/target identity checks remain. The documented contract requires consistent model configuration and optimizer leaf order across ranks; owner-specific leaf removal is unsupported and may hang. CPU/Gloo: 98 proven-resume and 6 EP optimizer/fresh-process tests passed. Exact-head native accelerator validation remains pending.
Earlier head 478ae4c3f34dd5e44db39b871bf84e1218fd1e29
New TP1/EP1 expert saves record canonical provenance only for the supported VeOmni FSDP meshes and placements; unknown or conflicting sources remain fail-closed. Layout is captured before checkpoint writes, and saved sidecar, generation, inventory and dtype checks remain. Inventory digest mismatches are propagated to all ranks before optimizer loading. CPU/Gloo regression on the preceding candidate ran 139 checkpoint/trainer and 67 EP/adapter cases; the final inventory error-path test and an independent 2-rank FSDP2 cold round trip also passed. Exact-head NPU validation is pending. Synchronous checkpoint hooks must not mutate the live model, optimizer or layout during a call.
Earlier reviewer fixes (f73d4161)
Trusted scheduler instrumentation is permitted while scheduler type, optimizer binding and persisted recipe checks remain. Wrapper code itself is not verified: callers must preserve serializable state and equivalent LR behavior across save and restore. Four CPU DCP wrapper placements, including the next parameter update, pass. Trainable-only checkpoints still hash local frozen parameters on save and load; device-to-CPU copies can be significant. No tensor-value hashing is performed for replica-consistency checks. The full checkpoint CPU regression passed 125 tests.
Earlier head 02f0753ac6bb43b7ea9504cf4128cdf74ca9aa64
Head 02f0753a makes the newly introduced export options keyword-only to preserve existing GDN positional parameters in dependent #1374; the same CPU 4-rank export test passed after this change.
Adds the reviewer-requested, model-only legacy source declarations veomni_tp1_ep0_fsdp1 and veomni_tp1_no_ep, with explicit caller responsibility for source identity. Undeclared ambiguous expert shards remain rejected; recorded noncanonical layouts always fail, and a different target expert axis or partial metadata cannot silently authorize other experts. The declaration does not permit optimizer-state migration or direct loading into a canonical v2 namespace. The HF conversion CLI supports the same declarations and --save-dtype preserve to retain each saved FP32/BF16 tensor dtype. CPU/Gloo 44 passed, 0 skipped, including 4/8-rank legacy/v2/LoRA recovery, wrong-axis and partial-metadata regressions, and mixed-dtype CLI export. Existing unversioned optimizer shards without provenance may still fail closed, including non-EP FSDP expert bias/moments. This code requires final combined accelerator acceptance.
Breaking compatibility changes
This PR intentionally changes existing MultiOptimizer checkpoint behavior: asynchronous MultiOptimizer saves are rejected, and optimizer-state restore requires the recorded owner/mesh/world-size/shard-axis layout. Cross-layout model-only resharding is not evidence for cross-layout optimizer-state restore. Legacy optimizer checkpoints without provable group and scheduler identity are rejected; no validated general migration tool is provided. A weights-only restart resets optimizer/scheduler state and is not equivalent to exact resume. Supported CPU optimizer offload remains available with synchronous DCP; it is separate from asynchronous checkpointing. Model-only and ordinary optimizer checkpoint paths retain their separately documented support.
Head 4e40d317 removes redundant replica geometry/trainability gathers and private scheduler-wrapper inspection under the documented trusted-runtime contract. Direct MultiOptimizer DCP callers must explicitly declare their supported live scheduler or None for no scheduler; direct callers also apply the returned scheduler state before the next step. The framework manager handles these details automatically. The saved layout and scheduler recipe identity checks, as well as coordinated optimizer-leaf ordering, remain. Current-head CPU/Gloo regression: 272 passed, 1 accelerator skipped, plus 6 FSDP2/PLE/Omni tests passed. This is not NPU/GPU acceptance; the maintainer's accelerator CI and the final combined native acceptance remain separate.
Earlier head 4e40d31709d3d3f44408e51d0950f5803b4928bf
This head additionally migrates the generic Muon and FP8 DeepGEMM CI fixtures to proven DCP recovery and marks CPU-only suites for CPU workers. CPU collection inventory preserves explicit 2/4/8-process plans. The affected CPU suites report 124 passed, 16 skipped; the skipped GPU cases require the maintainer's 4× Hopper/Blackwell CI. Model cross-axis resharding is tested separately from fixed-layout optimizer recovery.
Addresses the latest review by removing internal hook/adapter policing and repeated replica payload hashing under the documented trusted-runtime contract. Ordered optimizer leaves are checked in the existing layout exchange: an owner-specific freeze that removes a whole leaf on only some ranks now fails before per-leaf checkpoint collectives. A non-reconstructible dynamic RoPE cache is rejected before writing. The known PyTorch DCP optimizer wrapper is unwrapped without synthetic steps when a leaf is empty, while real class methods and registered hooks are preserved.
CPU/Gloo checkpoint regression: 278 passed, 2 xfailed before the final wrapper adjustment; subsequent combined checkpoint/wrapper regression 114 passed, plus 15 sparse-optimizer tests covering initialized/empty state, patched/unpatched target, DCP resume and next update. make quality and independent review passed. These do not establish NPU cold recovery for this head; the combined four-rank EP2 × FSDP2 native gate remains pending. Distinct mutable tensor views that share storage are outside the supported trusted-runtime contract.
Earlier head 01f67286e1b22155f012f6a90c19ae05a7193abb
Merges upstream main while retaining its per-tensor expert layout and ordinary asynchronous DCP. Resolves v2 DCP-to-HF marker handling, same-axis and negative-axis expert layouts, EP-only mesh selection, and SeedOmni module-scope canonical layout. Unversioned expert-axis-split checkpoints now require a verified source-layout migration; offline recognition is limited to standard experts names. Dynamic/longrope MultiOptimizer DCP training rejects before training until its transient cache can be restored. Static/default RoPE is unaffected.
CPU/Gloo: 40 expert layout/LoRA tests, 28 rank-local optimizer tests, 19 RoPE tests, 88 SeedOmni runtime tests, and one real two-rank ordinary async AdamW test passed; quality passed. Earlier combined checkpoint suites had 291 passed and 2 expected failures before the final layout refinements. The final head is a candidate: four-card EP2×FSDP2 same-axis NPU save, fresh-process resume and next update still require native validation. Composed SeedOmni model-scope canonical ExtraParallel remains explicitly unsupported.
Earlier head 6a86a20d10a17d832aaea82b2cb58f63a26016c1
Synchronizes #1395 CPU test registration and the #1396 removal of redundant full-layout signature gathers. The checkpoint path assumes identical logical model and layout configuration across ranks; local validation and error propagation remain. On combined source 3be7b5402bb7fbfe7143126cb650924a2dcfe6f2, targeted CPU/Gloo optimizer, save/restore/update, configuration and GDN precision tests passed 273 cases plus two subtests. The earlier accelerator evidence below is tied to its specified source; this new head has not been retested on NPU.
Earlier head 29797c9601737d414ee83adc54cdb11248fcec42
The canonical-layout flag rejects non-boolean YAML values before runtime; valid booleans and CLI conversion are unchanged. The exact head passed 10 CPU config cases, 4 Gloo checkpoint coordination cases and make quality. Prior Ascend preflight evidence is tied to source 5ec0a861..., not this new head.
Multi-optimizer checkpoint restoration can silently attach saved state or scheduler settings to the wrong parameter group, especially for empty or previously frozen parameters. This change stores and checks optimizer ownership, parameter-group and scheduler identity, state inventory, and model/checkpoint generation before applying a proven restore. It also keeps an absent optimizer state lazy and preserves previously owned frozen state.
This is the generic DCP portion extracted from #1226. It is stacked on #1395 and #1396; its diff against main includes those dependencies until they land.
Scope and compatibility
Synchronous and staged DCP saves are supported. Async save for this strict MultiOptimizer route is explicitly rejected.
Unproven legacy optimizer grouping, changed optimizer owner layout or incompatible scheduler identity is rejected; no automatic migration is claimed. The versioned model-only EP layout in [checkpoint] fix: version canonical extra-parallel model layout #1396 does not by itself migrate optimizer states across layouts.
Registered optimizer adapters preserve their specified state dtypes and lazy state. Snapshot inspection does not authorize raw load_state_dict recovery.
A late read or I/O failure can occur after model tensors have been copied; rebuild the runtime before retrying.
The trainer data-cursor association and model-specific integrations will be reviewed separately; this PR alone does not prove end-to-end training recovery.
Validation
Independent code review and pinned Ruff make quality passed on tree 020552a2a413d5cd05b782e46d92f94a4c899c77 (an earlier tree, before subsequent configuration compatibility and validation changes).
CPU/Gloo checkpoint, rank-local EP/PLE, optimizer and runtime regression: 361 passed, 5 hardware-dependent skips, 2 expected failures. Four-rank owner checks and two-rank tied-parameter alias order checks passed.
Native Ascend and end-to-end fresh-process training for the eventual combined stack remain to be validated on its exact final SHA; no NPU result is claimed by these CPU tests.

Dependency and checkpoint-mode follow-up
This branch includes #1391 for backend-correct distributed error propagation. The runtime rejects unsupported DCP MultiOptimizer asynchronous saves before training and coordinates local optimizer-build failures. Rewinding into an existing completed checkpoint remains fail-closed; use a new output directory. The two-accelerator HCCL checkpoint-preflight test passed on combined source 5ec0a861ae072cd2fc04bb8d0f036e8c810ca39f (1 passed, 0 skipped). Subsequent heads add configuration positional-argument compatibility and strict boolean validation after that test; this is startup-preflight evidence only, not full training or checkpoint recovery.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The change adds versioned ExtraParallel checkpoint layouts, MultiOptimizer save and restore validation, rank-local optimizer state handling, and coordinated checkpoint lifecycle checks. It also updates export paths, documentation, and distributed regression coverage.
Checkpoint configuration adds the canonical-layout flag. Parallel plans retain global shape and layout metadata. Model runtimes apply the layout and validate plan and wrapping constraints.

Explanation
The title "[checkpoint, optim] fix: validate multi-optimizer resume identity" matches the main change. The raw summary and objectives both center on identity validation for MultiOptimizer resume, covering optimizer ownership, parameter groups, scheduler identity, state inventory, and model/checkpoint generation. The changeset adds multi_optimizer_checkpoint.py, optimizer_resume_layout.py, and related manager, callback, and test changes that enforce these checks. The title is specific and concise. It omits the related expert-layout and dynamic RoPE work, which is expected for a title. Verdict: the title clearly summarizes the primary change.

Follow-up: restored the original positional order of all CheckpointConfig fields and appended the new canonical-layout flag; positional and parsed keyword configurations pass CPU regression. Addressed in f1b3e033912f4d59e3d02dcb0ba347597e7a9842: removed the collision guard and documented _veomni_ extra-state keys as framework-reserved for custom runtimes. The manager still writes the optimizer step and scheduler recipe, and the existing recovery checks and generation validation remain. CPU/Gloo checkpoint regressions passed.

[P3] The collision guard is removed, and extra_state() now documents veomni keys as framework-reserved. The manager still writes the optimizer step and scheduler recipe, with both fields asserted by the existing test.

[P3] This adds an undocumented optimizer cleanup hook, so adapter authors have no defined ownership or lifecycle contract. Document checkpoint_abort_file_backed_state(), its final-barrier failure call site and cleanup/error semantics, or remove the unused hook and its mock-only assertion.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Addressed in d075345: documented the optional zero-argument file-backed abort hook, its owner responsibilities, the manager final-barrier failure call site, idempotency, and preservation of the original barrier exception. The documentation also distinguishes cleanup performed by lower-level checkpointers.
Upstream #1286 introduces SwapAdamW after this branch diverged. Its EP path constructs MultiOptimizer leaves with an integer live step and optimizer-owned CPU buffers, while this PR currently accepts only the explicitly supported leaf codecs. A mechanical conflict resolution would either reject that path or risk loading directly into live buffers before identity validation. I am working on a dedicated synchronous DCP codec that preserves group/scheduler identity and stages CPU state before applying it; the existing FP32 master/Muon codecs remain separate. The documented MultiOptimizer async restriction is unchanged. @FoolPlayer@Coach257 please flag any upstream compatibility constraints we should also account for.
Please review cccc1df, which tightens scheduler identity for nested code and documents the trusted-runtime boundary. CPU scheduler tests passed; an older checkpoint restored in a fresh process with the next update identical. The new upstream SwapAdamW/MultiOptimizer integration remains a separate unresolved main conflict and is not claimed fixed by this change.

[P3] This test replaces standard math.cos between identity checks, exercising a hostile Python environment outside the trusted-runtime contract. Remove this synthetic test and the corresponding math/builtin object-identity policing; keep the scheduler recipe and nested-reference checks needed for checkpoint compatibility.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Addressed in 82fbfc9. Removed math-member/builtin object-identity policing and the monkeypatch-only test; kept the scheduler recipe, recursive code/global checks, and the trusted standard-runtime requirement, now documented for the full save/resume/training lifetime. Built-in constant, linear and cosine recipe hashes remain unchanged.
During review we also found custom schedules that can vary between processes despite matching bytecode, so the guard now rejects set/frozenset construction and f-string formatting. The docs explicitly require callers to ensure custom-schedule determinism; the recipe is not a proof for arbitrary Python. CPU checkpoint/optimizer regression: 121 passed; quality checks passed. @FoolPlayer
Updated the canonical checkpoint stack in be8195a6b847201c5383d9592090aba5fe009592: v2 model saves reject an unproven expert layout before publishing DCP metadata, and save/load coordinate optimizer-policy errors and rank-inconsistent MultiOptimizer/Swap paths before checkpoint collectives. Raw ExtraParallel optimizer rejection is coordinated within its process group.
CPU/Gloo checks on this head passed 13 asymmetric save/load and subgroup cases. Two-device Ascend 910B2C/HCCL targeted probes have now also passed: each rank rejected one-rank inspection errors and a SwapAdamW/AdamW mismatch before reader or writer creation; failed loads cleared stale identity/generation receipts, and the process group remained usable.
These are targeted native probes, not GitHub CI or a full-model run. Asynchronous MultiOptimizer DCP and cross-topology optimizer recovery remain unsupported.

c917429cf995de30755196ab3951a34ae2e1c4e5Uses simple same-step bookkeeping to reuse DCPs across HF and epoch saves for single-model and SeedOmni module owners.
72 CPU/Gloo tests passed plus the separate unknown-owner check and
make quality. The two-rank tests use real Omni fan-out and two module checkpoint managers, check one DCP write per owner, and restore model parameters, Adam step/m/v and the trainer sidecar. Epoch callback cadence is manually driven and HF export usesprepare_export, not actual safetensors serialization. Independent review passed. Earlier NPU results belong to their original source identities; the final combined source still needs targeted native recovery validation.Earlier head

The documented contract requires consistent model configuration and optimizer leaf order across ranks; owner-specific leaf removal is unsupported and may hang.
Earlier reviewer fixes (
f73d4161)Trusted scheduler instrumentation is permitted while scheduler type, optimizer binding and persisted recipe checks remain. The full checkpoint CPU regression passed 125 tests.

veomni_tp1_ep0_fsdp1andveomni_tp1_no_ep, with explicit caller responsibility for source identity. Undeclared ambiguous expert shards remain rejected; recorded noncanonical layouts always fail, and a different target expert axis or partial metadata cannot silently authorize other experts. The declaration does not permit optimizer-state migration or direct loading into a canonical v2 namespace. The HF conversion CLI supports the same declarations and--save-dtype preserveto retain each saved FP32/BF16 tensor dtype. CPU/Gloo 44 passed, 0 skipped, including 4/8-rank legacy/v2/LoRA recovery, wrong-axis and partial-metadata regressions, and mixed-dtype CLI export. Existing unversioned optimizer shards without provenance may still fail closed, including non-EP FSDP expert bias/moments. This code requires final combined accelerator acceptance.Breaking compatibility changes

4e40d317removes redundant replica geometry/trainability gathers and private scheduler-wrapper inspection under the documented trusted-runtime contract. Direct MultiOptimizer DCP callers must explicitly declare their supported live scheduler orNonefor no scheduler; direct callers also apply the returned scheduler state before the next step. The framework manager handles these details automatically. The saved layout and scheduler recipe identity checks, as well as coordinated optimizer-leaf ordering, remain. Current-head CPU/Gloo regression: 272 passed, 1 accelerator skipped, plus 6 FSDP2/PLE/Omni tests passed. This is not NPU/GPU acceptance; the maintainer's accelerator CI and the final combined native acceptance remain separate.Earlier head
