Problem

A sparse MultiOptimizer save skips an optimizer leaf whose state is empty. Its parameter groups can still have scheduler-updated settings: for example, a leaf whose learning rate changed from 0.01 to 0.0025 resumes with the new optimizer's 0.01. This affects the non-extra-parallel sparse-save path and is reproducible on upstream main.

Change

Save the empty leaf's parameter-group metadata without asking PyTorch DCP to synthesize optimizer state. The serialization preserves ordinary state-dict hooks and captures the packed parameter IDs before a post-hook can reorder live or serialized groups. It rejects ambiguous custom/instance-patched state_dict implementations and reentrant serialization of an empty leaf. As with optimizer state access generally, callers must not serialize and mutate the same optimizer concurrently.

This PR does not change extra-parallel layout, fix DCP's separate synthetic-step initialization on restore, or claim full Qwen/EP training qualification. It is split from optimizer offload work so its generic behavior can be reviewed independently.

Validation

  • The test-only CI registration follow-up 1b81246a9db704b9eac1a3d285e210020ec34b1c was verified with the actual CPU scheduler: all 12 cases passed, including the two-process Gloo FSDP2 round trip. Both GPU and NPU manifests select the file with CPU plans.

  • CPU optimizer/checkpoint regressions: 146 passed, 2 expected failures on the preceding code-identical head. The latest head adds a two-rank FSDP2 regression; its 12-test suite passed.

  • Two local Gloo ranks: real DCP save/restore preserved the empty leaf's 0.0025 learning rate on both ranks without creating source state.

  • Real DCP post-hook group-reordering regression, tensor LR, hook failure and reentrancy tests passed; independent code review and make quality passed.

  • Two-rank CPU FSDP2: real DCP save/restore retained the empty-leaf LR and identical model shards. The targeted native NPU FSDP2 LR/model-shard save/load gate below passed on the earlier production-code-identical head e9f451fc; synthetic-step behavior, first resumed update and fresh-process recovery remain outside its scope.

Earlier-head native FSDP2 save/load — 2026-11-01

Two Ascend910B2C ranks on e9f451fcb2ab834bce94be7b22a75cd98680fdaf: rank0 PASS, rank1 PASS, torchrun exit0. Real NPU FSDP2 dp_shard2, unchanged standalone probe, actual DCP save/load, source empty leaf remains empty on save, restored target leaf LR=0.0025, all model local shards restored exactly (rtol0/atol0). Target model is newly constructed in the same workers. No synthetic-step, first resumed update, fresh-process cold restart, full Qwen/EP or GitHub CI acceptance claim. Exact script, source/runtime/image identity and evidence.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Checkpoints now preserve learning rates and parameter-group settings for optimizers that have not yet created state. This includes rates updated by a scheduler, so restored training can continue with the same optimizer settings.
    • Optimizer state serialization now respects supported state-dict hooks and parameter-group ordering, and reports errors for ambiguous or unsupported custom serialization cases.

Walkthrough

MultiOptimizer sparse state-dict serialization now includes parameter groups for sub-optimizers with no optimizer state. The helper captures groups through optimizer hooks and maps parameter IDs to checkpoint names. Tests cover learning-rate retention, hook behavior, rejection cases, and DCP round trips.

Add a multi-rank sharded round trip for the empty-leaf path.

The repository already has a real two-rank FSDP2 MultiOptimizer round trip, but it steps every leaf before saving. The new tests cover empty-leaf learning-rate restoration only with plain tensors in one process. Add a focused FSDP2 sharded-model case in which one leaf remains empty, then assert that its scheduler-updated learning rate is restored and that the source leaf has no optimizer state.

Use the existing distributed launcher and ParallelState setup. An extra-parallel fixture is not a substitute unless it reaches _sparse_state_dict(), because the extra-parallel-aware save branch calls optimizer.state_dict() directly.

Addressed the FSDP2 coverage suggestion in e9f451fcb2ab834bce94be7b22a75cd98680fdaf. The new two-rank CPU/Gloo test leaves one leaf without state, advances its learning rate with a scheduler, and uses the non-ExtraParallel DistributedCheckpointer save/load path. It checks that the source leaf stays empty and the restored learning rate is 0.0025. Source and target use different initial seeds; source shards are snapshotted before saving and checked again after save and restore. The 12-test CPU suite passes.

This does not claim that DCP's separate synthetic-step-on-resume issue has been fixed or that accelerator execution has already passed.

@Coach257 @FoolPlayer I split the generic non-ExtraParallel empty-leaf learning-rate issue from the offload review into this standalone PR. The current head e9f451fcb2ab834bce94be7b22a75cd98680fdaf includes a real two-rank CPU FSDP2 checkpoint round trip and the CodeRabbit coverage request. Please review the scoped save behavior and the explicit custom-optimizer/reentrancy limits.

The separate synthetic-step-on-resume problem is still open; this PR does not claim it is fixed. Native Ascend FSDP2 is being checked separately.

@FoolPlayer @Coach257 — the requested two-rank native NPU FSDP2 save/load check passed on exact e9f451fcb2ab834bce94be7b22a75cd98680fdaf (tree d8678ebdb08853cb06ef66f4ba151de0aea9ca1c).

Rank Result Restored empty-leaf LR Model local shards
0 PASS 0.0025 exact, rtol=0 / atol=0
1 PASS 0.0025 exact, rtol=0 / atol=0

Parent torchrun exit code: 0. Both ranks emitted exactly one PASS rank=N head=e9f451fcb2ab834bce94be7b22a75cd98680fdaf empty_leaf_lr=0.0025 source_state=empty. Completed 2026-11-01 00:18:57 Asia/Shanghai (2026-10-31 16:18:57 UTC). No source/probe changes or relaxed assertions.

The user-provided standalone script below was run once under torchrun against a genuine clean shallow Git checkout of this exact commit; each worker checks HEAD and the optimizer/checkpointer diff. It constructs a two-layer Linear model with real NPU FSDP2 (dp_shard=2, two devices, HCCL), creates state on the active first AdamW leaf, leaves the second source leaf state empty while setting its LR from0.01 to0.0025, then performs actual DistributedCheckpointer.save/load. Source state remains empty after save; saving does not change the source model shards. The target model is newly built with a different seed and initially different shards; restoring reproduces all source model shards exactly and the second leaf LR is0.0025. Model and optimizer DCP metadata/data files, combined torchrun output, and full rank0/rank1 stdout/stderr were retained. An independent evidence audit confirmed the exact identities, native mesh, both PASS lines, exit0 and asserted scope.

Scope boundary: the target model is newly constructed in the same worker processes. This does not validate the target empty optimizer state's synthetic-step behavior, the first resumed optimizer update, a fresh-process cold restart, or full Qwen/EP training. It does not close those separate gates or replace GitHub CI.

[P2] This file is absent from both accelerator suite manifests, and tests/optim/ is not collected wholesale, so none of these regression tests runs in CI. Please register it in the applicable GPU/NPU manifests with CPU launch plans, or move the cases into an already collected test.

Fixed in 1b81246: the file is now selected by both GPU and NPU suite manifests. All cases use CPU launch plans, with the FSDP2 case retaining its two-process CPU override. The actual CI scheduler collected and ran 12/12 cases successfully, including the two-rank Gloo DCP round trip; no accelerator cards were used. @FoolPlayer

[P2] Verified in 1b81246a9: both suite manifests now select this file, and the module CPU plan preserves the FSDP2 test’s two-process override. This resolves the CI registration gap.
