Earlier test review follow-up (e2349e10)

Removed the rank-divergent model fixture and both launchers as requested in #1397. Uniform-model pre-write, dense/load and coordinator-call tests remain; production checkpoint code is unchanged. The scoped CPU tests passed 18 cases. The earlier two-device result on a5f03a608e8c5b0194ce5dfa5c54213e13d5e515 used the removed fixture and is historical evidence only, not supported TP training coverage.

Documentation sync (46bd9704) and native preflight evidence

The preceding documentation update corrected one source link. The native two-device error-propagation test passed on combined #1374 source a5f03a608e8c5b0194ce5dfa5c54213e13d5e515 (1 passed, 0 skipped). It simulates TP=2 and does not validate real TP training, async/staged saves or cold resume. That is a combined-source result, not a separate exact-head test for this PR.

Earlier checkpoint review fixes (8a97fe9d)

Dynamic/longrope training is no longer rejected at runtime construction; MultiOptimizer checkpoint save and resume retain their coordinated cache and identity checks. TP > 1 saves with detected expert or EP-sharded model tensors are conservatively rejected before writes, including frozen or custom layouts that might be canonical; checkpoint loads and TP1 are unaffected.

The combined CPU/Gloo checkpoint tests passed 34 cases, with one accelerator-only case skipped. The two-accelerator error-propagation test passed on combined #1374 source a5f03a608e8c5b0194ce5dfa5c54213e13d5e515 (1 passed, 0 skipped); earlier native evidence remains tied to its original source identity.

Earlier documentation sync (0ef1fed3)

Links the adapter context helper and the optimizer save/load call sites requested in #1397, using branch-specific source line numbers. The latest update changes documentation only. Link targets and make quality were checked locally; earlier native evidence remains tied to its original validated source.

Earlier dependency sync (c40f08d2)

Syncs #1397's local configuration preflight. The optimizer/offload implementation is unchanged. The combined downstream CPU/Gloo regression passed 147 tests. Earlier native results remain tied to their validated source identities; this exact head has not been retested natively.

Earlier functional head bcfd462a30194d3c7fbf7df108b01533c580ae8d

Syncs #1397 checkpoint owner bookkeeping, including single-model and SeedOmni HF/epoch reuse. Save-time optimizer identity/receipt policing was removed; persisted generation checks and FP32 master/offload behavior remain. CPU/Gloo: 52 targeted tests passed, plus 130 tests in the earlier broader run and an updated 46-test callback suite. make quality passed. Older native evidence applies only to its original source; the final combined source still needs targeted native recovery validation.

Earlier head bdc3f155f2fbcd4710868ae45d5fbd57a1ba48ad

Addresses the reviewer-reported TP1/EP1 FSDP LoRA export path by passing the named runtime parallel state into the DCP planner and coordinating rank-0 failures. Targeted CPU/Gloo: 47 tests passed; existing four-rank EP2 layout tests: 6 passed. The optimizer arithmetic is unchanged. Exact-head native verification remains pending.

Earlier head 43739c8f59f78b6ce9cad587d1988044e15b4692

Syncs #1397 830d6254 without changing the AdamW/offload implementation. CPU/Gloo: 42 focused checkpoint and optimizer tests passed. The checkpoint runtime requires consistent model/configuration and optimizer leaf order on every rank. Exact-head native accelerator validation remains pending.

Earlier head 8ef9cfde2d67c2c7770cdb701c87ac0f6d663bbd

Includes #1397 478ae4c3: newly saved TP1/EP1 FSDP expert model and optimizer states carry explicit source evidence, while unknown old optimizer layouts remain fail-closed. The merged head passed 41 focused CPU/Gloo tests, including fresh-process EP1 FSDP2 model/optimizer recovery, next updates, FP32 master, offload and inventory failure coordination. Native acceptance of the updated combination remains pending; earlier NPU results apply only to their stated SHAs.

Earlier checkpoint-cadence fix (1b95bcee)

The standard callback writes the DCP needed by a step-scheduled HF/LoRA export through the callback when epoch DCP saves are enabled, so the epoch cadence reuses the same step rather than attempting a second write after the manifest. A 5-step CPU MultiOptimizer test covers DCP, manifest, restore into a new runtime, and the next identical update, including conversion failure and retry; callback/integration regression 47 passed. Custom HF-only exporters receive a DCP at HF step cadence when epoch saves are enabled, and callers making direct out-of-band DCP saves must coordinate with the callback. Async DCP failure followed directly by a train-end retry remains an existing separate limitation; MultiOptimizer uses synchronous DCP.

Earlier head 2e8c29ebdcf54df674f3477f71c48c67f3de31c9

Head 2e8c29eb includes the subsequent keyword-only interface fix from #1397 02f0753a; no optimizer math changed. The four-rank legacy export test passed after this interface change.

Merges #1397 09a428a0 to address the reviewer-requested legacy VeOmni TP1 source declaration for model-only restore/export. Undeclared ambiguous shards, noncanonical source metadata, changed source expert axes, and partial metadata remain fail-closed; the declaration does not enable optimizer-state migration. The export CLI now offers --save-dtype preserve for FP32/BF16 tensor dtypes. CPU/Gloo legacy/v2/LoRA regressions: 44 passed, 0 skipped; #1226 offload/PLE regressions after this merge: 40 passed. Full combined NPU acceptance on this new head remains pending. The provided 16-card SFT result 7a47314b belongs to the previous head e5902a53 and does not validate the new commit.

Earlier head 77b63b1ed925bc382149a9906c9db938c767411b

Merges #1397 4e40d317 and preserves FP32 master/m/v, CPU optimizer offload and saved layout validation. Removes remaining trusted-runtime replica geometry/trainability gathering and scheduler wrapper inspection; direct MultiOptimizer DCP callers explicitly declare the scheduler (or None) and restore scheduler state before resuming. CPU/Gloo offload, adapter, frozen-owner and DCP tests: 66 passed, 7 accelerator skipped. Independent public validation source 7a47314b passed 16-card small-model SFT cold recovery with the previous #1226 head e5902a53; it is not evidence for this new head. The older unversioned model-only EP source-layout compatibility issue remains open for reviewer discussion, and accelerator CI/final combined native validation remain pending.

Earlier head e5902a5342da4fcb702759474e5ee8aade9fc3f8

This head also updates the Muon and DeepGEMM test fixtures to the proven DCP API; affected CPU suites report 124 passed, 16 GPU-specific skipped. DeepGEMM native execution awaits maintainer GPU CI.

Synchronizes #1397 reviewer fixes while retaining FP32 master/m/v, CPU offload, frozen optimizer ownership and format/dtype/shape checks. PyTorch's wrapped empty AdamW is saved without triggering a synthetic step. CPU/Gloo optimizer, offload, scheduler and DCP tests: 67 passed; independent review and make quality passed. Same-process CPU results do not establish native cold recovery: EP2 × FSDP2 save, fresh-process restore and next update remain to be validated on the final combined head.

Earlier head 6ba0494a431b8f09755cc55f57a47523c3638477

Merges #1397/main checkpoint layout and precision fixes. FP32 master/m/v, CPU offload and frozen optimizer ownership are retained. CPU optimizer/harness suite: 43 passed; adapter and PLE cold-recovery suite: 13 passed; quality passed. The merged version is a candidate: actual NPU EP2×FSDP2 checkpoint save, fresh-process restore and next update with CPU offload still require validation. The redundant static-configuration and replica-digest review is not yet resolved.

Earlier head 1105150fb393e2eec26cd34c76cbfa4396d1d1b9

Fixes the accelerator trainer checkpoint test harness: EP MultiOptimizer uses synchronous DCP and restores into a newly built optimizer and scheduler in the correct model mesh; EP1 retains async coverage. CPU policy tests: 5 passed, and quality passed. This harness uses the same model process and does not establish fresh-process or accelerator correctness. The #1397/main merge conflict, dependency synchronization, open reviewer findings and final native verification remain.

Earlier head cf0b6ab6133e7ba540147f25dbc1755ea15e5501

Adds the requested rank-local AdamW checkpoint adapter contract and CPU launch plan. The adapter suite passed 8 CPU tests, the offload reference suite passed 31 CPU tests, and make quality passed. This commit changes no optimizer implementation. The current head is still blocked by #1397/main compatibility and has not been retested on NPU.

Earlier head 94a9199049020ab297a5ac08ec1fb8cba82f1339

Synchronizes #1395 CPU test registration and the #1396 removal of redundant full-layout signature gathers. The checkpoint path assumes identical logical model and layout configuration across ranks; local validation and error propagation remain. On combined source 3be7b5402bb7fbfe7143126cb650924a2dcfe6f2, targeted CPU/Gloo optimizer, save/restore/update, configuration and GDN precision tests passed 273 cases plus two subtests. The earlier accelerator evidence below is tied to its specified source; this new head has not been retested on NPU.

Earlier head df8cbe5d2e3a3f0a6eece4282d550f3a467698fd

Adds CPU regressions comparing string and torch.dtype moment configuration across BF16/FP32 and resident/offloaded groups. tests/optim/test_cpu_offload_adamw.py: 31 passed on this head; no optimizer production code changed from the preceding head. The earlier native evidence remains tied to its stated source.

Earlier head e6bb56f40dd11b51321e45223351cf2fe571369c

This head synchronizes the #1397 strict boolean configuration fix; optimizer arithmetic is unchanged. Its exact-head CPU config regression passed 10 cases. The 16-rank native result cited below belongs to the earlier combined source and is not an exact-head claim.

An earlier candidate synchronized CPU-only test resource plans.

Earlier tested head 97c8975871eb28a3e25d9c25578fcd59e9445ceb synchronized the independently reviewed strict checkpoint failure-coordination and barrier/file-state safety fixes. CPU/Gloo on that earlier head: 165 passed. The combined source ef0a25b31b9c9e12bcfa795f0c9ee17391c4ff6b passed targeted native precision and fresh-process recovery checks on a small model; this is a combined-source result, not a standalone head or full-model claim.

BF16 model parameters can lose small optimizer updates, and keeping every FP32 state on the accelerator can exceed the memory budget. This PR adds FP32 master-weight AdamW variants and selective CPU offload with explicit FP32/BF16 moment storage choices; model compute precision is unchanged.

Scope

Validation and status

  • Prior candidate head 488ff88ca431d25b42b66353e6bc0e38199ca488 has the same source tree as the independently reviewed CPU candidate 94a5327b9783019ceb367fec88120822661dfcd5: targeted CPU/Gloo optimizer/offload/PLE tests 55 passed, and pinned make quality passed. The pre-existing optimizer-config compatibility tests also pass.
  • Native staging tests are included for BF16/FP32 compute parameters, non-default streams, buffer growth and frozen-to-unfrozen recovery. The combined-source native run included the accelerator optimizer tests and a small-model save, fresh-process restore and next-update comparison. It did not test this head as an isolated checkout.
  • Ready for peer review. Merge is still gated on the prerequisite PRs and maintainer review of the documented legacy-group and cross-EP-layout restrictions. The combined small-model result does not claim full 48-layer training, cross-layout migration or completion of GitHub accelerator CI.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly affected assets are the selected model parameters and optimizer shards within a training job. Broad regexes can select the full optimizer parameter inventory; regex selection is a placement policy, not an isolation boundary.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The current run owns offload placement through runtime parameter identities; the offload flag is removed from serialized groups. Saved tensors must match configured precision and shape, and planner validation checks original metadata before loading can conceal a mismatch through casting.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Successful restore removes placeholders for wholly absent states so the first real gradient initializes from the restored parameter. Zero-state markers conflicting with saved tensor state are rejected, and ephemeral restore markers have reset paths. These controls do not provide a transaction spanning model and optimizer restoration.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make the failure contract explicit: discard or reconstruct live training state after a failed restore rather than catching the error and continuing. This would formalize containment around the existing nontransactional split-load behavior; it is not evidence of an introduced vulnerability.

Explanation

The title "[optim, ckpt] feat: add fp32 masters and selective cpu adamw" matches the main change. The PR adds FullFP32AdamW, MasterFP32AdamW, and CPUOffloadAdamW, which store FP32 master weights and allow selective CPU offload of optimizer state. The title omits the large checkpoint-layout and validation work, which is expected for a short title.

Add native DCP placement coverage.

The DCP test uses CPU parameters and the default cpu_offload=False. Running this file in GPU or NPU CI does not make the test device-native. Add GPU and NPU coverage that saves and reloads an optimizer with accelerator parameters in a cpu_offload=True group, then asserts that the compute parameter remains on the accelerator while master_weight, exp_avg, and exp_avg_sq remain on CPU.

A generic native staging or state_dict reload test does not cover this unless it exercises dcp.save/dcp.load and these placement assertions.

Merge-order correction after the integrated review: #1232 now contains this FP32 master/offload foundation plus the Qwen3.8 Muon implementation and the latest strict resume/ExtraParallel fixes, with the combined optimizer/DCP suite passing. Land #1232 as the integrated path first; this PR can remain as the isolated foundation review or be superseded afterward. The earlier “merge this PR first” note is stale for the current candidate stack.

Merged current main eba362dd4ca43b6cba53dc69c1d378cf3eda57b6 in 85b79fce9688ee955307bfe6de2187bf0c3d097f. The safetensor conflict keeps both upstream converter-driven export/rank ownership and this PR's DCP layout-metadata filter. The original added/deleted PR content is preserved across all 14 PR files; no optimizer precision or checkpoint policy changed.

Independent merge review passed. CPU/Gloo validation: 280 tests and 2 subtests passed across save_safetensor, checkpoint conversion, FP32 master and CPU-offload AdamW. Pinned make quality passed. Native hardware qualification remains separate.

31-53: Trivial · Stability & Availability · Quick win

No test runs the accelerator staging branch of CPUOffloadAdamW.step.

Every test here builds CPU parameters and CPU gradients. In CPUOffloadAdamW.step, the condition offload and g.device.type != "cpu" is therefore never true. The following code never runs in tests:

  • the pinned buffer from _buffer(...) with pin_memory(device=...)
  • the non-blocking D2H copy and its _synchronize
  • the bf16 round-trip of effective through staging
  • the non-blocking H2D copy into w[section]

gpu.json and npu.json run this file on accelerator runners. Those runs still execute only the CPU path, so the suites give no device coverage for the offload transfer.

Add one test that skips when no accelerator is available. It should put a bf16 parameter and its gradient on the accelerator and use cpu_offload=True. It should then compare opt.state[p]["master_weight"] and p against the FP32 torch.optim.AdamW reference used at Line 37. Assert that master_weight and both moments are on CPU and that p stays on the accelerator. Use a chunk_size smaller than numel so the reused buffer handles several chunks.

As per path instructions, "Flag tests that mock away the behavior under test, or that only run on one hardware path when the change is device-sensitive."

@coderabbitai review

Updated in 0229e912ba3ff9ddad48640fdbf55aedfe412706. The documentation issue and the review-body native-coverage suggestion in review5661218657 are addressed. New native device test uses a BF16 accelerator parameter/gradient, real D2H/H2D staging over four full chunks plus a tail for three updates, independent FP32 AdamW reference and CPU FP32 state checks. It is separate from the unchanged CPU-only suite and selected once in each GPU/NPU manifest with a one-card plan. 50 CPU checks passed; the new native case skipped on CPU and still requires actual GPU/NPU CI approval/execution. No native pass is claimed. Independent review safe.

@coderabbitai review

Fixed in 0ad85b2edac9e11149adb34e1c281fe47867a184. Native eligibility reads declared CI capabilities when present: an assigned non-CPU backend without a usable runtime fails instead of skipping. Optional local CPU/unsupported hosts skip without probing the runner's CUDA/NPU-only discovery. CPU-planned regressions exercise assigned non-CPU failure, optional CPU skip and unsupported-local discovery avoidance using real metadata parsing. Base optimizer/guard suite: 53 passed / 1 native skip; quality/device-API and independent review passed. Actual one-card GPU/NPU transfer execution remains pending CI.

@Coach257 @FoolPlayer Supplemental native validation for current head 0ad85b2edac9e11149adb34e1c281fe47867a184:

  • Ascend 910B2C, Torch 2.10.0 and torch-npu 2.10.0.post2: tests/optim/test_cpu_offload_adamw_device.py::test_accelerator_offload_staging_matches_fp32_reference passed with no skips.
  • Three updates covered a 257-element parameter and 64-element chunks, including the tail. CPU master, m, and v were FP32. FP32 states matched the independent PyTorch AdamW reference at the test's existing rtol=1e-6, atol=1e-7; BF16 parameter write-back matched bitwise.

This is a focused arithmetic/offload test, not full-model or 32-card validation. NPU CI is still awaiting approval. Please review/approve the CI jobs when convenient.

@Coach257 @FoolPlayer Updated to 966acbdde1508feaf316e2255329d8431ed0e3da and resolved the current-main merge conflicts (main b5e79b4543b3f44489780667b222dfa91d9ff208). The optimizer stack is ordered #1226 → #1232 → #1374.

Preserved the PR-specific precision/packing behavior while retaining the accepted #1376 cleanup; no optimizer dtype or arithmetic policy was relaxed. Targeted CPU/localhost-Gloo regression: 69 passed (FP32 master/moments, CPU offload and optimizer/DCP state checks); make quality passed, and an independent merge review found no introduced correctness issue.

Current GitHub readback is mergeable. Existing per-feature native evidence is reused within its documented scope. The final composed SFT cold-resume acceptance has been queued on 16×910B2: continuous step 1 (save DCP) and step 2 versus a fresh-process resume followed by the same step 2. It includes the pinned #1381 PLE fix and checks batch/RNG, loss, gradients, parameters, FP32 optimizer states, GDN-sensitive parameters, PLE empty shards and absent indexer state. DPO/EP-gradient validation is tracked separately and is not duplicated; no extra 20-step or performance run is scheduled. The final composition remains Candidate until that gate completes. Please re-review and approve the fork CI workflows when convenient.

[P2] For BF16 parameters, super().load_state_dict creates BF16 copies while preserved retains all FP32 originals. FullFP32AdamW consequently allocates about six extra accelerator bytes per local parameter during resume and can OOM a job that fits during training. Load group metadata with empty state, then install the preserved tensors directly, as CPUOffloadAdamW does.

Fixed in d7c2c11. The loader keeps the original FP32 master/moment tensors without materializing parameter-dtype copies, while preserving load hooks, parameter-group metadata and unassigned state. The regression detects the previous FP32-to-BF16 copies and compares the restored state and next update. CPU/Gloo: 54 optimizer/checkpoint tests passed; native NPU was not rerun.

[P2] The loader now validates and installs the original state tensors directly, avoiding PyTorch's parameter-dtype cast. This fixes the temporary BF16-copy path; the new regression also checks restored values and the next update.

Removed the mesh-cache lock in d7c2c11. The supported trainer constructs checkpoint state on the calling thread before async staging/upload; this is true in the inspected PyTorch 2.10 and 2.11 implementations. Concurrent external calls to the helper are not covered by this guarantee.

[P3] No production optimizer sets requires_exact_recipe; only the fabricated SimpleNamespace assertion enables this path. The helper, planner branch, and load-call plumbing add an unused checkpoint policy that must be maintained without exercising any supported optimizer. I traced this guard to the stacked Muon PR #1232: Qwen38MuonAdamW currently sets requires_exact_recipe=True, and the planner uses it to reject a checkpoint missing its saved Muon group recipe. Removing the guard from #1226 without moving it to #1232 would drop that check from the dependent branch. I kept it for now; I am checking the dormant-suboptimizer/zero-state resume edge cases before moving the guard into the PR that uses it. Would that dependency-preserving sequence work for you?

[P2] The leaf-order helper, all four call sites and the asymmetric-leaf fixture are removed. Persisted source/target layout validation and per-leaf failure coordination remain. This resolves F035.

[P2] These new cases monkeypatch math.cos, override tuple indexing, and return nested eval/import callables instead of numeric learning rates. They drive hostile-Python guards outside the trusted scheduler contract. Remove these synthetic fixtures and their dedicated defenses while retaining actual scheduler identity checks.

[P2] The math-member identity snapshot and the monkeypatch, tuple-subclass and returned-function fixtures are removed. Supported scheduler identity checks remain, and the documentation now states the trusted-runtime boundary. This resolves F036.

@FoolPlayer Updated in 98709f3dfc762a4367c54947dc7dbd705f93aec4. Removed the redundant leaf-order collectives and the unsupported asymmetric fixture while retaining persisted source/target layout and per-leaf error checks. The scheduler validator now trusts standard runtime bindings, and the guide links point to current definitions. CPU checks: 11 scheduler cases, 33 SwapAdamW checkpoint cases, 7 adapter cases, and 8 targeted identity/resume cases passed; standard constant/linear/cosine scheduler fingerprints matched the previous version. NPU verification for the new combination is pending.

[P3] The CheckpointConfig reference omits extra_parallel_canonical_layout, so users consulting docs/usage/arguments.md cannot discover this new opt-in or its default. Add the boolean field with default False and link the canonical-layout compatibility and migration restrictions.

[P3] The CheckpointConfig table now documents extra_parallel_canonical_layout as bool, default False, and links to the existing compatibility and migration section. This resolves F037.

@FoolPlayer Updated 348d567018ccfd31852fc0406c3cd2c04a04da8f: refreshed the SeedOmni metric, HF-layout and offline-encoding links, and documented extra_parallel_canonical_layout=False with the compatibility/migration link. Also synchronized the scheduler formatting cleanup requested in #1377. CPU checks: 15 scheduler/checkpoint cases passed; constant, linear and cosine recipe fingerprints are unchanged relative to the previously validated combination. The prior 16-rank NPU result applies to the earlier combination, not this new head.
