The DPO checkpoint tests now run the real same-output receipt confirmation before checking epoch-save deduplication, and the path-style restore fixture records the source load path. The previous assertions remain; 47 related CPU/Gloo tests passed, including all seven previously failing cases. This change affects tests only. Existing NPU results remain tied to their recorded source identities.
Current head eae85f6d10e525bc347656fe607de9e6627d76a7
Syncs #1377 checkpoint cadence, async failure handling and main #982 token statistics. DPO completion-only labels, pair normalization, packing, Ulysses and CP production logic are unchanged; test-only EnvironMeter fixtures now initialize both sets of fields. CPU/Gloo: 275 tests passed before the main sync, and 22 targeted DPO/channel/token-meter tests passed after it; make quality passed. Earlier native recovery evidence is limited to its original source; the new combined-source native validation remains pending.
Reviewer documentation clarification (e1c0d49d)
The standalone PR now documents that a built-in MultiOptimizer without generation receipts rejects same-output trainer-state recovery, the explicit old-step load_path plus different-output workaround and its limits, and local symlink resolution. Commits 9d5edd96 and e1c0d49d change documentation only; they do not change the underlying training code or the scope of earlier pinned NPU evidence.
Latest DCP receipt coordination (abe660ac)
Alongside the #1226 cadence fix, same-step DCP/HF decisions are coordinated before any rank saves or skips, preserving optimizer/checkpoint identity checks. The objective, loader, packing and DPO numerical implementation are unchanged. CPU/Gloo regression: 98 passed, 0 skipped, including two-rank disagreement and stale receipt rejection. The earlier 8-card native 80be694d evidence below is for its pinned parent, not this newer head. A final combined native gate remains pending.
Latest native and CI update (0f876aa1)
The head adds only a CPU launch plan for the split DCP regression (local 1 passed). Native validation commit 80be694d combines parent aeb420e2 with #1332722f70e8: DP2 × U2 × CP2 synthetic unequal-pair DPO loss/gradient and channel-loss AdamW checks passed on 8 Ascend910B2C/HCCL (1 passed, 0 skipped). A real text SFT loader probe passed on 8/8 ranks, including packing boundaries and 640/640 independently audited tensor hashes. This is not a claim of real DPO, full-model training, or cold resume on this head.
Current head aeb420e287a73876a31f8b730a8fe404764a1d49
Updates only the loader-restore test fixture and CPU launch plan: six 2-rank cases ran through the accelerator CI plugin with 6 passed, 0 skipped, asserting each rank's actual error. No training implementation changed from a7d9755d.
Native HCCL results on the earlier head 19a389dfaee0f051928f066286c31d883c0bcc4d: 3 passed, 0 skipped on 4/4/8 Ascend 910B2C. Pure-text DP2×U4 and DP2×CP4 SP-group loader samples matched before splitting. This does not claim mixed Ulysses+CP recovery on the current combined head; the later changes remove internal collision defenses and fix the CPU test only.
Earlier head a7d9755d465e1f289bc132bac2af59ba62f9c849
Removes private provenance-key collision defenses under the documented trusted producer/runtime contract; normal proof construction and local segment/topology validation remain. CPU provenance and checkpoint tests: 241 passed; quality passed. Prior native evidence is tied to the SHA on which it ran.
Earlier head 19a389dfaee0f051928f066286c31d883c0bcc4d
Removes redundant cross-rank checks of static configuration and per-step input fingerprints; the loader must supply identical input, labels and packing boundaries within an SP group. Local segment/provenance checks, pair weighting, checkpoint identity and coordination of real data or I/O failures remain. CPU/Gloo regression: 295 passed, 28 deselected; quality passed. Native validation of this head is pending.
Earlier head 864b55abf4090af5716a177bda40376e1347a395
Integrates current #1377 and #1372, retains per-row source/padding selection alongside main's data statistics, and corrects the Omni aggregate-optimizer checkpoint-provider check. CPU/Gloo: 343 DPO/data tests passed with 26 skips; 133 channel tests and 46 checkpoint identity tests passed; make quality passed. Independent review also exercised real Omni managers in a single-process DCP probe. The new head has not been rerun on NPU; #1377 legacy MultiOptimizer compatibility remains open.
Earlier head — DPO and checkpoint integration
Head a8f0e6f99ace3a20ab333d19bf96bc3deea2254b synchronizes #1377 legacy and strict optimizer recovery safeguards while retaining completion-only DPO, exact pair-weighted loss/gradients, packing provenance, and cross-epoch cursor validation. A same-output resume cannot certify an unproven legacy optimizer or overwrite an incomplete source checkpoint. A different output directory remains available.
Independent review and CPU/Gloo DPO provenance, epoch and flushing regression: 174 passed. Real legacy DCP same-output replay also passed. Subsequent combined source ef0a25b31b9c9e12bcfa795f0c9ee17391c4ff6b, which contains this head, passed a 16-rank two-layer DPO acceptance with unequal pair counts and cross-epoch non-empty-buffer cold recovery; captured results matched. This does not claim full 48-layer/128K training or standalone GitHub CI acceptance.
Earlier recovery integration (superseded)
Head 95defaae6fa7fb1e33774650a2ac66a22f5045f0 merges #1377 and binds DPO cursor/position to the strict optimizer generation when #1397 is present. A pending epoch completion preserves the verified generation; a loaded checkpoint at the same output location is reused rather than overwritten. Path identity handles relative paths, trailing slashes and local symlinks, and rank disagreement fails collectively. The existing DPO pair-weighted objective and completion-only semantics remain in place.
CPU/Gloo DPO suite: 451 passed, 26 hardware-dependent skips on the preceding merge candidate. Subsequent targeted tests covered fixed/dynamic two-resume epoch transitions, equivalent path spellings, next-epoch samples and receipt retention.
Four-rank Gloo provenance/packing suite: 27 passed. Two-rank Gloo output-path disagreement also failed on both ranks as intended. These tests do not substitute for native CP or whole-model training.
The DPO + [checkpoint, optim] fix: validate multi-optimizer resume identity #1397 combination also passed a one-rank CPU/Gloo test using the real DCP manager and native DPO loader: save, epoch refresh, two model/optimizer reloads and a subsequent identical update. The reloads were in the same process; a fresh-process native combined recovery remains pending.
Current candidate — ready for review, native acceptance pending
Head 1fdea6eba98e48021f1a750c5b0070458ad0cdeb incorporates #13778ba378e523fa7f5b259b2b11ce83feadf973ec10 and fixes DPO cursor/source/RNG validation, flushing recovery across epochs and repeated saves, and fixed-batch short-tail handling. Pair weighting uses the actual pair count. For non-divisible dataset sizes, the native distributed sampler can still repeat pairs to equalize ranks; the DPO collator does not add padding/replay. Exact recovery requires the documented deterministic input and reference-model attestation; older unproven cursors fail closed.
CPU/Gloo: final DPO recovery/pair suite 199 passed, 26 native-only tests skipped; additional loader/entry-point regression 280 passed and tail/flushing regression 18 passed. Independent review passed in the stated CPU scope. These tests do not establish NPU, full-model, or final combined optimizer checkpoint acceptance. Please review now; merge after #1377 and the pending native precision/recovery gate.
Historical dependency and review order (superseded)
Earlier head 5f19439c60b197aebd3711baeed3295b34833819 merges #1377bbbf2fb09f83b9e0c08357c1e8cd3e5a2e9e2697 and resolves the callback/documentation conflicts. At that time both PRs were Draft: #1377 still had SFT exact-resume boundaries, and that head awaited native DPO validation. Review the shared foundations before merging the DPO changes.
DPO trainer-state exact recovery is limited to the documented native mapping dataset/dataloader and standard stateful sampler; persistent workers and background prefetch are not accepted on resume. Data/worker transforms must be deterministic, and source data and reference-model weights must remain unchanged. Fresh training remains available under the existing configuration rules.
What does this PR do?
DPO currently sums microbatch means, which weights steps incorrectly when microbatches or DP ranks contain different numbers of preference pairs. A one-token segment can also be confused with padding, and two packed attention segments can be counted as two source samples.
This PR computes the global pair-weighted DPO objective, retains chosen/rejected boundaries through packing and SP, and checks producer, callback, rank and checkpoint provenance before use. Multi-turn pairs supervise only the completion after their shared history. Dynamic batching drains valid buffered pairs without dataset replay or duplicated optimizer-step padding and saves its resume phase.
Optional channel metrics are owned by the DPO trainer: detached policy NLL reuses its existing gathered log-probabilities and completion masks; the common callback remains the sole source aggregator. A sample is one preference pair, input counts include both physical segments and exclude collator padding. No additional model forward, SFT CE capture or SP gather is added. #1006 only adds compact counters; no deleted observer/private trainer API or common packing-collator setting is required. The latest metric schema retains channel_tokens without a duplicate label_tokens series.
Breaking compatibility: provenance is required, unversioned trainer-state checkpoints are rejected, and standard fast tokenizers need an audited fingerprint. Existing weights can seed a fresh run. Supported restrictions include TP=PP=1, a fixed objective and mapping-dataset exact resume; see the DPO guide.
Validation
Earlier head 5f19439c60b197aebd3711baeed3295b34833819: CPU/Gloo recovery and cursor regressions 219 passed, and DPO pair loss/gradient, packing and rank-local failure regressions 16 passed, all with zero skipped. Independent review and make quality passed. These cover the restricted scope documented above; no native NPU test or complete model cold-resume qualification has been performed on this head. The earlier results below retain their original source identities.
Earlier native-tested head: f4bb7b3ac0169ad69007aae5b886f2abd1de0daf. This head includes #1375's existing Ascend integer-cumprod sequence-boundary fix and a test-only deterministic-HCCL precondition. The latter does not change the DPO objective, gradient normalization or any zero-tolerance parity assertion. Earlier CPU/Gloo results below remain bound to their stated source identities.
Additional validation at fd91c86a286fd4188cc3260dde041bb1146005d8: provenance, checkpoint and DPO-pair CPU/Gloo suites reported 275 passed, 23 NPU-dependent skipped; the final documentation-only follow-up also passed its focused CPU check.
On 917dec6568cae8cc7328a13dc41c578aaf018a40, affected callback, DPO label/pair and provenance CPU/Gloo suite: 297 passed, 39 deselected, zero skipped. Selected cases cover variable packed segment lengths, collator padding, sum/mean log-probabilities, custom source aliases and unequal microbatch counts. Native cases are not counted as passed.
Real Gloo DP2, DP2/U2, DP2/CP2 and DP2/CP4: 4 passed. Channel off/on loss, captured gradients, actual AdamW weights and optimizer states match with zero tolerance; gradients and NLL also match independent references.

Effective production/test tree: 8ea39752e3dddeba9a7ea5ff6b77db01e9e6e869 (a Git tree, not a published commit).
Independent change review, make quality and git diff --check passed.
Earlier four-/16-NPU results remain bound to their original integration and scope; they do not qualify this new head. Cross-EP expert precision is handled separately by #1382, and PLE/checkpoint work by #1381/#1374.
Earlier-head native gate PASSED:f4bb7b3ac0169ad69007aae5b886f2abd1de0daf, 1 passed, 0 skipped, on eight real Ascend 910B2C NPUs with HCCL DP2/CP4. Unequal pair counts, independent loss/gradient references, and exact channel off/on loss, captured gradient, actual AdamW parameter and optimizer-state comparisons all passed. The outer launcher explicitly unsets HCCL_DETERMINISTIC; this test's own fresh-worker precondition is exercised. Full pytest logs, JUnit and source/environment metadata were archived and counts independently parsed.

The original bool-cumprod issue is addressed by existing #137573cb97c489d1f244d107d546ddf3ced9ceee8de0. Same-mode default-HCCL controls showed FP32 run-to-run variability too; no precision assertion was relaxed. Current head scopes deterministic HCCL to the native pytest before worker spawn, without changing production DPO arithmetic.

The pull request adds DPO segment provenance and pair-weighted training, strict recovery checks for DPO and SFT loaders, and validated checkpoint paths for optimizer state and ExtraParallel layouts. It also updates conversion tools, documentation, and distributed test coverage.
DPO transforms and collators attach producer segment evidence. The trainer validates that evidence and rank agreement before model forward.
Pair-weighted DPO training veomni/trainer/text_dpo_trainer.py, veomni/trainer/callbacks/*, veomni/utils/helper.py, tests/trainer/test_dpo_pair_mean.py, tests/trainer/test_channel_loss_callback.py
Losses and metrics use global preference-pair counts. The trainer records provenance-aware channel-loss observations and coordinates invalid-step failures across ranks.
Loaders save and validate cursor phase and geometry. Trainer-state recovery checks input identity, RNG state, loader state, and rank agreement before restoration.
MultiOptimizer save and restore validates optimizer and scheduler identity, state layout, and checkpoint generation. Rank-local state and adapter paths are added.

Native Ascend 910B2C follow-up: on integrated source c064054f797d7584a4584fc97064b74e2624c834, all 22/22 native HCCL pair-weighting/provenance-coordination cases passed. The separate four-rank provenance test failed before its distributed assertions because its fixture had no shared prompt; completion-only correctly rejected it. The test-only fix is now in this PR head a4a618059599113f93b8f572b32b7ac4d10ec446, with a CPU fixture check and explicit 4-process Gloo regression (2 passed). The four-rank HCCL provenance case was rerun successfully on integration e26bf6d0b28a4a284fc5797513237a16ee374796 (1 passed, no skips); that integration retains the #1006 and hybrid-CP changes. These are small-model/synthetic checks; real-model EP gradients and complete checkpoint cold-resume remain pending. @FoolPlayer Please take another look when convenient.
@Coach257@FoolPlayer In addition to the fixed 4-NPU provenance fixture and 22 pair-weighting cases already reported, pinned integration e26bf6d0b28a4a284fc5797513237a16ee374796 (containing head a4a618059599113f93b8f572b32b7ac4d10ec446) passed a 16-NPU HCCL DP2/U4/CP2 synthetic comparison with unequal pair counts (1, 2, 1, 3). Pair-weighted loss and captured toy-policy gradient matched the FP32 reference.
Exact evidence scripts and limits. Full-model DPO, EP expert gradients, real optimizer updates, and DCP cold recovery remain separate gates; the PR remains draft.
Synced the dynamic-batching checkpoint dependency from #1377 into #1378 in 19a3b3328. The merge retains DPO's no-replay / completion provenance path and #1377's cursor isolation; it does not change the DPO loss formula.
A targeted regression reproduced a mutable saved-buffer alias in the former non-DPO shallow restore (the second restore read sample 3 instead of 2). Restoring from the same cursor twice now selects the same next sample. This requires one extra host-side copy of the buffered samples per rank during restore; the docs call this out. In one synthetic CPU check, a 100.0 MiB tensor buffer increased RSS by 101.6 MiB. This is not a full-model memory measurement.
Checks on the merged tree: dynamic batching 16 passed; DPO provenance and checkpoint 193 passed with one channel-loss integration case skipped because that separate integration is not present in this branch; pair-weighted DPO loss/gradient 3 passed; make quality passed. Existing 16-card evidence remains tied to its original source identity; no new NPU or full-model cold-resume test is claimed. Both #1377 and #1378 remain drafts.
Integration note after Coach's required scope reduction of #1006: its new head 185dd0bc06e14c32a556886a29297ba49bc0c296 intentionally no longer defines ChannelLossComputer.observe_dpo_log_probs or the trainer-private callback lookup. #1006 is now only compact data counters over main's existing observer.
At this PR's current 19a3b332, enabling train.channel_loss still requires observe_dpo_log_probs at trainer construction, and the DPO forward uses that adapter. Thus this optional DPO metrics combination remains unsupported after the #1006 cleanup; it must be implemented within the DPO PR rather than reintroducing adapters/provenance into #1006. Channel-loss-disabled DPO and the independently tested pair objective are separate scopes. I am explicitly keeping the optional-metrics integration on HOLD, not treating the new #1006 CPU/Gloo result as DPO acceptance.
@Coach257@FoolPlayer Please begin implementation review of 19a3b33288307648594a01c1e2972145ad614aa7.
Implements pair-weighted DPO gradient accumulation, completion-only supervision and packed/source boundaries. CPU/Gloo and the scoped 4-/16-device synthetic evidence are documented.
Open gates / limits: Optional DPO channel-loss integration is still HOLD: the current #1006 intentionally removed observe_dpo_log_probs, so enabling that path is not ready. Review can begin on the pair objective and data contract; this request does not mark the missing adapter or full-model cold resume complete. The older cross-EP observations also need to be read with the separate #1382 fix, not reclassified as this exact-head acceptance.
This is a review request for the published Candidate implementation, not a merge approval or a new native qualification. Draft status and the stated gates are retained.

DPO now owns the small detached observation adapter and configured source aliases. It reuses the objective's existing policy log-probabilities, completion masks and gathers. Common callback aggregation stays unchanged; no observe_dpo_log_probs, trainer-private callback lookup, ordinary collator metadata hook, extra CE or extra SP gather is needed. The latest compact #1006c7c555c0f remains aggregation-only and exposes channel_tokens, not duplicate label_tokens.
Evidence: final affected CPU/Gloo suite 297 passed, zero skipped (39 deselected); four real DP/U/CP Gloo update comparisons passed. Composition against latest #1006 plus #1332 passed 121 tests, zero skipped, including DP2/U2/CP2 with independently expected pair/input/supervised-token counts. Channel off/on loss, gradients, actual AdamW parameters and optimizer state are equal with zero tolerance in these synthetic tests. No full-model numerical equivalence is claimed.
The new eight-NPU HCCL DP2/CP4 selector is in the PR body and is still pending native execution. Full-model DPO cold recovery remains a separate gate; the PR stays Draft rather than implying those gates passed. Please review the implementation independently of the compact metrics PR.

veomni/utils/helper.py:161-162 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Keep channel-loss source IDs until ChannelLossCallback reads them.
In multisource mode, EnvironMeterCallback runs before ChannelLossCallback. Its add() call removes ds_idx, source_name, and cur_token_num from each micro-batch. ChannelLossCallback then reads the default source ID key ds_idx from the same dictionaries. With train.channel_loss.enable set and no other configured source key present:
With strict: false, the channel callback receives no source IDs and records no channel metrics.
With strict: true, training stops at step begin. The strict check runs for every step, including steps outside the collection interval.
The DPO observation adapter reads the source IDs that the channel callback captured at step begin. It does not read the provenance proof's source_keys, so it does not recover the lost IDs.
Move the removal of these keys so it runs after ChannelLossCallback.on_step_begin has captured the source IDs. Keep the removal before model forward. The removal happens in _get_multisource_ds_idx, which the meter calls from add(). The model-forward removal point for the base (non-DPO) trainer was not inspected, so no code change is given here.

@Coach257@FoolPlayer#1378 now contains the versioned portable tokenizer audit at fd91c86a286fd4188cc3260dde041bb1146005d8. Legacy path-bound checkpoints retain their old identity, while new v2: attestations survive relocation of identical tokenizer files. The two provenance/checkpoint CPU suites passed 207 tests; this update changes identity/validation, not the DPO objective. Draft status and the existing full-model recovery gate remain unchanged.
Additional scoped regression for fd91c86a286fd4188cc3260dde041bb1146005d8: provenance, checkpoint and DPO-pair CPU/Gloo suites reported 275 passed, 23 skipped; all 23 skips require Ascend/HCCL (2, 4 or 8 devices). The new portable fingerprint’s data-transform and cross-directory checkpoint tests are included in the 207-test CPU provenance/checkpoint selection. This does not establish native multi-device DPO acceptance for this new head.

The scheduler-identity duplication noted in the previous CodeRabbit review is addressed in #1397 (8c97fbc) and synchronized here in 5d8b345. Supported LambdaLR recipes retain their prior serialized identity; unsupported StepLR and mutable captures now fail consistently with the existing layout gate. A checkpoint saved by d075345 was restored in a fresh CPU process with the new code, and the next model/optimizer/scheduler update matched exactly. CPU scheduler tests: 20 passed; DPO provenance/pair tests: 184 passed. DPO, packing, and CP implementations were unchanged. @coderabbitai review
@YLlllllllllll I’ll trigger an incremental review of the new changes, focused on scheduler-identity reuse, LambdaLR checkpoint compatibility, and rejection of unsupported StepLR recipes and mutable captures.
Thank you for reporting the fix and the fresh-process recovery check. The reported CPU results do not replace the separate native combined-source and full-model recovery checks.
If you found this review helpful, would you consider giving us a shout-out on X?

The nested scheduler identity finding is addressed in 42bbf47. The follow-up checks nested global loads, unsupported dynamic builtins, mutable captures, and mutated math members; normal built-in scheduler identities remain unchanged. Earlier head
5f19439c60b197aebd3711baeed3295b34833819merges #1377bbbf2fb09f83b9e0c08357c1e8cd3e5a2e9e2697and resolves the callback/documentation conflicts. At that time both PRs were Draft: #1377 still had SFT exact-resume boundaries, and that head awaited native DPO validation. Review the shared foundations before merging the DPO changes.DPO trainer-state exact recovery is limited to the documented native mapping dataset/dataloader and standard stateful sampler; persistent workers and background prefetch are not accepted on resume.
The latest metric schema retains
channel_tokenswithout a duplicatelabel_tokensseries.Breaking compatibility: provenance is required, unversioned trainer-state checkpoints are rejected, and standard fast tokenizers need an audited fingerprint. Existing weights can seed a fresh run. Supported restrictions include
TP=PP=1, a fixed objective and mapping-dataset exact resume; see the DPO guide.Validation

Unequal pair counts, independent loss/gradient references, and exact channel off/on loss, captured gradient, actual AdamW parameter and optimizer-state comparisons all passed. The outer launcher explicitly unsetsHCCL_DETERMINISTIC; this test's own fresh-worker precondition is exercised. Full pytest logs, JUnit and source/environment metadata were archived and counts independently parsed.Immutable NPU CI image digest

73cb97c489d1f244d107d546ddf3ced9ceee8de0. Same-mode default-HCCL controls showed FP32 run-to-run variability too; no precision assertion was relaxed. Current head scopes deterministic HCCL to the native pytest before worker spawn, without changing production DPO arithmetic.Historical native command at
126d1ebe…(eight Ascend NPUs):The
f4bb7b3…one-case result is historical. The earlier126d1ebe…two-case native gate passed; see the updated exact-head evidence. Full-model DPO optimizer/checkpoint save and fresh-process cold recovery remain separate uncompleted profile gates. Implementation review can proceed; the full-model training and cold-resume profile remains unverified.Cost and compatibility
Provenance checks and tokenizer fingerprinting add host work and rank coordination; real-workload throughput is not measured. Dynamic-loader restore copies saved buffered samples to preserve cursor isolation; its host-memory cost is documented.
