What does this PR do?

Add native shared and independent expert LoRA for M3.1-Flash's SwiGLU-OAI activation, including eager and fused-NPU registry rows, nested adapter-disable reference inference, and an opt-in FSDP2 frozen-parameter dtype policy.

The target checkpoint is MiniMax-M3.1-Flash. Its checkpoint config uses model_type="minimax_m3_vl" and architecture MiniMaxM3SparseForConditionalGeneration; existing minimax_m3 module/class identifiers are retained for compatibility. They are architecture identifiers, not a claim that a different model version was validated.

Stacked integration: this branch integrates #1315 at 3fc30d7f306aa086e16859622b0369eab454f8df and #1337 at 3780b042594d8597b34e4fbc5e683de3aea2fac6, over main 6e8433ad7a0ca59e52940fa8239be59c17a47dbf. Both public dependency heads are retained as merge parents for authorship/history. Their model and dense-reference code is not new work claimed by this PR. The main diff therefore includes those pending dependencies; it should narrow after they merge. #1337 now has a newer public head, so this explicitly pinned draft still needs integration/rebase before merge.

Checklist Before Starting

Test

  • make quality passed with repository-pinned Ruff 0.13.1, across all 1,042 tracked Python/notebook sources under the Makefile's tasks/tests/veomni/docs directories. The remote task-only snapshot also included scripts so first-party import classification matched the repository. Ruff reported 1,027 files already formatted.
  • Own expert-LoRA suite: 38 CPU cases passed, using python -m pytest --noconftest -o addopts= -q tests on an isolated source snapshot. Includes real registry/wrapper FP32/BF16 CPU paths and CPU-emulated NPU math; not a native NPU/EP/FSDP2 run.
  • Whole shipping diff received an independent source review: safe after fixing four missing exact-catalog rows and a stale dense-only reference paragraph.
  • Targeted catalog negative control: original six expected expert-LoRA rows fail against ten actual production registrations; the corrected ten-row catalog passes. Actual registration, platform requirements and wrapper modules are used; package startup/logging and EP=false are isolated. This is not full cross-family pytest.
  • Independent packed sparse-attention checks match per-segment causal SDPA outputs and Q/K/V gradients in FP32/FP64.
  • New expert tests live in the already-selected tests/ops directory; existing catalog test is extended. Inherited dense-reference selections remain in both accelerator suite manifests.
  • Not run: complete combined pytest with standard conftest/scheduler, pinned patchgen regeneration, native NPU kernels/gradients, EP communication, FSDP2 materialization/resume, or full-model training on this published combination.

API and Usage Example

Expert activation and alpha/limit follow the base SwiGLU-OAI model contract. Existing SiLU experts retain their default behavior.

build_parallelize_model(..., preserve_frozen_dtype=True) retains frozen BF16 storage while upcasting trainable state. It fails before mutation unless PEFT, FSDP2 and an active mixed-precision parameter dtype are enabled; the default remains false. FP32 parameter storage is not a claim about operator execution dtype.

with model.disable_adapter():
    with torch.no_grad():
        reference_output = model(input_ids=input_ids)

A base reference still requires bias="none" and no separately trained base modules; disabling adapters does not undo base updates. Keep the context active for backward recomputation if used outside inference.

Design & Code Changes

  • Dispatch the OAI variant for shared/independent wrappers; apply the correct eager/NPU activation after adapter deltas while reusing existing grouped-GEMM and EP dispatch/combine.
  • Bypass expert adapters through the native base operator; restore nested contexts after exceptions.
  • Reject unsupported standard clamped-expert combinations and unsupported dtype-policy modes.
  • Document selection, API constraints and reference behavior in docs/design/op_selection.md and docs/key_features/lora.md.
  • Extend the exact built-in catalog for all four new rows.

Exact combined source for downstream drafts: Li-Jicheng/VeOmni@d51ffd7ca60b65be361091c2f3c95828772262ef. This is an unpublished integration revision, not a release.

Checklist Before Submitting

  • Read repository contribution/agent instructions.
  • Full Makefile quality target passed.
  • Added/updated API and operator-selection documentation.
  • Extended CI-selected tests.
  • Independent whole-shipping source review completed.
  • Human reviewed the original candidate delta, confirmed on 2026-10-28.
  • Human review of the final four catalog rows and corrected reference paragraph.
  • Full repository pre-commit and combined runtime/backend acceptance before merge.
  • Training tasks were not moved or renamed.

AI assistance was used for source adaptation, tests, composition review and PR preparation. The submitting user's earlier review confirmation does not automatically cover the final test/documentation follow-up.

Review follow-up (2026-10-28)

Addressed the three inline findings and three cleanup suggestions from the first CodeRabbit review in four focused commits, ending at 41d66bdb7b7c4ab6008949ff06cfd4a7f19b80e4:

  • Keep dependency/integration status in this PR description, leaving stable behavior documentation in the design page.
  • Classify two MiniMax H2D sites individually: host-built vision coordinates and public-entry one-segment metadata. Native GPU confirmation remains required.
  • Correct the expert-test license header to match repository convention.
  • Test actual LoRA classes, registry dispatch and adapter-disable context, including both layouts and nested/exception restoration, instead of extracting those methods with AST/exec.
  • Remove unused preserve_frozen_dtype declarations from the FSDP2/DDP helpers; the validated policy remains owned by build_parallelize_model.
  • Reuse the shared SwiGLU-OAI activation and assert exact zero-adapter/base parity in FP32 and BF16.

Validation: 39 CPU cases passed with Transformers 5.16.1 and PyTorch 2.14.0+cpu. This is not the pinned accelerator environment. The exact Makefile quality commands passed with Ruff 0.13.1 over restored tasks tests veomni docs (1,027 files formatted); Windows has no make binary. Independent source review: safe. Native GPU sync-gate, NPU kernels, EP/FSDP2 and full-model acceptance were not rerun. This revision does not assert additional human review or test execution. The bot's broader docstring-coverage result remains inconclusive and includes inherited dependency changes.

…MiniMax M3 VL support

MiniMax M3 VL (MiniMaxAI/MiniMax-M3) support rebuilt on main after the
OpSlot -> VeomniOp refactor (ByteDance-Seed#1142), the moe_experts reorganisation, and
the test-tree reorganisation.

- Modeling: patchgen GPU/NPU configs construct instance-local VeomniOps:
  rms_norm/offset (fp32 1 + weight), cross_entropy_loss via ForCausalLMLoss,
  moe_experts/swiglu_oai, minimax_sparse_attention indexer/attention, and
attention/standard for the vision tower. Packed-only language attention,
Ulysses with per-KV-group index-query exchange, frozen indexer, vision
attention guard for varlen and veomni_* backends, router aux loss disabled.
- Ops: minimax_sparse_attention eager rows (npu_fusion_attention on Ascend);
  moe_experts/swiglu_oai rows (eager, fused_triton, fused_npu) reusing the
  standard merged-fc1 Triton/NPU/EP paths through an optional swiglu_alpha;
  SwiGLU-OAI helpers in moe_experts/shared/swiglu.py; Ulysses
  gather_seq_scatter_kv_heads.
- Data/trainer: MiniMax processor, chat template and data transform; shared
VLM media loading; vision_tower lookup and vit_lr grouping.
- Checkpoint: runtime converter for the public checkpoint layout.
- Tests, configs and docs for the above.
…en attention

Dense (full_attention) language layers now call the standard attention
VeomniOp selected by attn_implementation, like other VeOmni models; its
veomni_* adapter runs the Ulysses all-to-all. Only sparse layers go
through the MiniMax sparse attention operators, which drop their dense
causal fallback and require block_indices.

The vision and dense-language backend checks share one helper that
rejects non-varlen backends for multiple packed sequences and non-VeOmni
backends under Ulysses. The single-sequence fallback builds cu_seq_lens
on the device (host on NPU) so CUDA FlashAttention can consume it.
…scattering

Under SP the vision tower pads its pixel rows to a multiple of
sp_size * spatial_merge_size**2, so the gathered projector output ends with
features of that synthetic tail. The precomputed-mask path ignored them
(masked_scatter reads only the masked count), but the fallback for callers
without image_mask / video_mask runs get_placeholder_mask, whose exact
feature/token count check failed: SP=2 with a 1x2x2 grid gathered two
features for one placeholder.

Trim the gathered image/video features to sum(t * h * w) // merge**2, read
from the host grid list when the collator provides it, so both paths and
image/video_hidden_states see one feature per placeholder.
…rs on every input

The patched MiniMax M3 language model builds no attention mask: dense
(full_attention) layers rely on the backend for causality. The varlen
FlashAttention adapters and SDPA apply it through module.is_causal, but the
model's eager_attention_forward only adds a mask when one is passed, so a
single unpadded sequence on eager let every token attend to future tokens.
The backend guard only rejected non-varlen backends for multiple packed
sequences or Ulysses, so that case ran and leaked training targets.

The guard takes a causal flag: dense language attention now requires a
varlen FlashAttention backend for every input, while the bidirectional
vision attention keeps accepting other backends for a single media input.
…I EP tests

The accelerator CI scheduler (ByteDance-Seed#1336) requires a launch_plan marker on cases that start a two-rank torchrun; mark the GPU and NPU SwiGLU-OAI EP parity tests like the other two-rank tests.
Integrate MiniMax model support from ByteDance-Seed#1315
and native dense reference context from ByteDance-Seed#1337.
Their public heads are retained as merge parents for attribution.

Add shared and independent eager/NPU expert adapters, nested reference
bypass, and guarded frozen-parameter dtype preservation.

Replace the AST-extract-and-exec harness with real imports where possible.

These tests copy single functions out of veomni/lora/moe_layers.py and veomni/lora/model.py. They run them against SimpleNamespace objects and stand-in Dense and Expert classes. This has two effects:

  • The tests do not exercise the real LoraLinear, is_lora_moe_experts, or the module-level names the functions use. A change to a helper or import inside these functions can pass here and fail in production.
  • ast-grep flags every exec and compile call (no-exec, no-compile).

test_real_registry_and_expert_wrapper_reference_parity already loads the real moe_layers through the _PREFIX package harness. Reuse that harness for the bypass, clamped-standard-rejection, and context-restore cases, and call the real classes.

As per path instructions: "Flag tests that mock away the behavior under test".

Remove or wire the unused preserve_frozen_dtype parameters.

build_parallelize_model validates and applies the flag, but it does not forward it to either helper. Both helper parameters are therefore silent no-ops for direct callers.

Remove the parameter from both helper signatures. If direct FSDP2 callers must support it, apply the validation and trainable-parameter upcast inside parallelize_model_fsdp2. Do not apply this policy to DDP because the validator explicitly requires FSDP2.

Reuse the shared SwiGLU-OAI activation and add zero-initialized parity coverage.

veomni/ops/kernels/moe_experts/shared/swiglu.py already exports swiglu_oai. Use it in _activation instead of duplicating the formula. The current oracle also duplicates the formula, and the registry test randomizes every LoRA B matrix before checking the adapted output. Add a parity check before that randomization for both layouts.

Add native NPU coverage for expert LoRA.

The cited tests run on CPU, and the emulated-NPU fixture replaces token permutation, unpermutation, and grouped GEMM with Torch implementations. The native NPU tests exercise the base fused SwiGLU-OAI operator, not the shared or independent expert-LoRA registry and wrapper paths. Add native NPU cases for the supported LoRA paths, including expert-parallel dispatch.

[P2] Supplying vit_image_cu_seqlens without vit_image_max_seqlen leaves fallback_max_seqlen undefined and crashes the vision forward with UnboundLocalError; video metadata has the same issue. The metadata contract permits missing keys. Derive the maximum independently of the cumulative-length fallback, regenerate both backends, and add partial-metadata coverage.

[P2] Commit f38ddf1 now derives a missing max_seqlen from grid_thw_list and SP padding independently of cu_seqlens, and both generated backends contain the correction. The regression test covers all four metadata-presence combinations, resolving this source-level crash.

[P2] With no varlen metadata, a single left-padded row passes this guard and becomes one segment covering the entire row. Decoder calls then receive attention_mask=None, so real tokens attend to padding and produce incorrect outputs. Validate the no-padding precondition or remove padding before this fallback, and add a batch-size-one padding regression.

[P2] Commit 3da8142 checks attention_mask shape and requires all ones before building fallback metadata in both generated backends. Regression cases now cover left, right, internal and all-padding masks for dense and sparse layers, resolving the source-level mask-loss defect. Accelerator execution remains unverified.

tests/models/transformers/test_model_forward_no_implicit_sync.py: 1

305-316: Trivial · Performance & Scalability · Heavy lift

Cover the MiniMax packed path in the sync gate.

The MiniMax fixture does not pass varlen kwargs, so it exercises only the single-sequence fallback. The allowlist matches the enclosing MiniMaxM3VLTextModel.forward function, not the fallback branch. A sync added to the packed branch can therefore be accepted by this test. Add a packed MiniMax invocation and scope the fallback allowlist to the fallback path. No current runtime failure is established.

Add a MiniMax packed-path invocation to the sync gate so it exercises execution
with varlen kwargs. Narrow the allowlist entry for MiniMaxM3VLTextModel.forward
to the single-sequence fallback path, ensuring syncs in the packed branch are
not exempted.

Load the training runtime helper only in the runtime seam tests so the dense adapter checks can collect without the full training dependency stack. Retain all runtime tests and accelerator launch plans.
