[lora] feat: support disabling dense adapters for reference inference - #1337
Add VeOmniLoraModel.disable_adapter() so reference-policy inference can bypass native dense adapters without merging, unloading, or modifying training weights. This provides the VeOmni-side API needed by the Qwen3 Dense LoRA integration tracked in #506; it does not complete that entire issue.
Current validation after merging main 5040b347 (2026-10-23): CPU, PyTorch 2.11.0, Transformers 5.16.1.
Extended the existing native dense regression file and selected it in both scripts/ci/accelerator/suites/gpu.json and npu.json. Existing cases keep their CPU plan; the adapter-bypass regression has CPU and runner-selected accelerator variants. The latter declares a one-card plan for either GPU or NPU and moves both models and inputs to that device.
Current PyTorch 2.11 CPU tests and actual scheduler execution: 19 passed, 1 accelerator-only skipped (20 cases collected). CUDA and NPU inventories each select exactly 19 zero-card CPU cases and one one-card accelerator case. Coverage includes nonzero-adapter bypass, nested contexts, exception restoration, merged-layer rejection and PEFT interoperability; real accelerator execution remains pending.
make quality and git diff --check origin/main...HEAD pass. Both unit workflows retain main's scheduler.
GPU/NPU hardware was not rerun for this integration update; upstream Actions still require maintainer approval.

Earlier single-device hardware evidence, before this main integration:
A paired local verl consumer was exercised on one A800 80GB with Qwen3-0.6B, PyTorch 2.13.0+cu130, Transformers 5.16.1, and vLLM 0.29.0. Its engine probe verified unchanged frozen parameters/reference outputs and an exactly repeated next optimization step after restoring model/optimizer/RNG state. Four GRPO updates with reference inference, merged-weight rollout synchronization, and step-2/step-4 checkpoints completed with nonzero gradients. This is single-device evidence, not cross-rank FSDP2 validation or a model-quality benchmark.
Use unmerged dense adapters. Obtaining the original frozen base policy also requires bias="none" and no separately trained base modules; bypassing adapter branches does not undo changes to those parameters.
Design & Code Changes
Dense layers bypass the adapter branch while disabled.
The context restores each layer's prior flag, including nested calls and exceptions. Expert adapters and merged layers fail before flags are changed.
Document the API and include its native regression file in accelerator CI.
Checklist Before Submitting
Read the contribution guide.
Applied make quality and branch whitespace checks.
Updated documentation.
Extended native tests and registered their file in both GPU/NPU accelerator suite manifests.
No training script was moved or renamed.
AI assistance was used for investigation, implementation, validation, and drafting.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Temporarily bypass dense LoRA adapter contributions within a context, then restore their prior state afterward, including with nested contexts or exceptions. Disabling adapters does not change base weights or adapter parameters.
Adapter disabling is unsupported for expert adapters and merged dense adapters.
Documentation
Added guidance for using adapter disabling with frozen base reference policies, including configuration requirements and a reminder that trainable base parameters remain active. Keep the context active during backward recomputation.
Latest main compatibility
Merged main aa7b2d16 in 3780b042, resolving the GPU/NPU suite-manifest conflicts while preserving both native dense LoRA coverage and the upstream safetensor utility tests. The actual CPU scheduler ran both selections: 36 passed, 1 accelerator-only case skipped. Full make quality passes. Accelerator CI still requires maintainer approval.

Adds VeOmniLoraModel.disable_adapter() to temporarily bypass dense LoRA contributions. It rejects unsupported configurations and restores prior adapter states. Tests cover nested contexts, exceptions, and merged layers. GPU and NPU suites run the test module.
Dense LoRA layers initialize a disable flag and skip adapter contributions when it is set. The context manager rejects MoE and merged configurations, then restores each layer’s prior state on exit.

Tests cover nested contexts, exception restoration, and merged-layer rejection. Documentation describes supported cases and frozen base-reference constraints. GPU and NPU suites run the test module.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to a70b3
Calling disable_adapter() on a model after merge_and_unload() silently returns outputs with the adapter weights still folded in, rather than the base reference policy. This is a narrow misuse path, but it would corrupt reference-policy results without raising an error. Reject this call before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 7a577
The bypass is contained to adapter execution and restores prior state after nested use and exceptions. No new externally reachable security bypass was established, but concurrent access and the external integration’s lifecycle remain unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The directly affected scope is every dense LoRA layer under the selected wrapper instance. Because flags belong to layers rather than individual requests, any concurrent execution sharing those layers would observe the same bypass state. No tenant, service, or environment-wide exposure is established by this implementation.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The added entrypoint accepts no request payload and requires in-process access to the wrapper. The examined change does not establish a path from untrusted inference input to adapter-state mutation, privilege escalation, or an external sensitive sink; external caller reachability remains unverified.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Eligibility checks precede all flag writes, preventing already-merged dense weights or configured expert adapters from silently being treated as a supported base-reference bypass. These checks constrain execution semantics; they are not caller authorization controls.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Deferred backward recomputation must remain within the bypass lifetime or it can execute with restored adapter state. Documentation explicitly states this requirement, but the external consumer is unavailable to verify compliance.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Before supporting shared concurrent inference, define exclusive ownership of the bypass interval, including merge operations and recomputation. Explicitly document serialization requirements or provide an isolation mechanism rather than relying on nested-context restoration.

The module-level CPU plan applies to every test in the file. The GPU and NPU suite entries therefore run the new disable_adapter() forward tests without accelerator visibility. Keep the CPU plan for the existing tests, and add a function-level accelerator plan for the bypass test. Move its model and inputs to the runner-selected accelerator. One accelerator-marked case covers both suite entries.
This remains an optional test-coverage refactor, not a production defect.

Reject bypass after merge_and_unload().
merge_and_unload() modifies the wrapped model in place and removes its LoraLinear wrappers. If a caller then uses disable_adapter() on the retained VeOmniLoraModel, layers is empty and the guard passes. The forward returns merged adapter weights instead of the base reference. Record the unload state and reject this call. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
