What does this PR do?

Restore Ascend MXFP8 support in the unified low-precision architecture. Add a trainer-side ModelSlim weight exporter, pass native quantization through to vLLM, and restore and reapply Ascend weight layouts during refit. Add CPU regression tests for quantization dispatch, packed experts, native engine arguments, and layout handling.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for serving Ascend ModelSlim MXFP8-quantized models, including automatic detection when applicable.
    • Ascend quantization settings can be configured for rollout, and MXFP8 models are recognized and prepared during loading.
    • Supported weights, including packed expert weights, are converted with their associated scales.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Unquantized weights remain unchanged, and unsupported quantization types are rejected.
    • MXFP8 weights are restored and reprocessed around model loading to maintain the expected format.

The changes add an Ascend MXFP8 rollout quantizer, pass string-valued quantization to vLLM, and add MXFP8 detection and weight reload hooks. CPU tests cover quantizer dispatch, output tensors, engine arguments, model detection, and reload order.

Changes: Ascend MXFP8 rollout

Layer / File(s) Summary
Quantizer implementation and dispatch
verl/utils/qat/ascend.py, verl/utils/qat/compressed_tensors.py, tests/utils/test_ascend_mxfp8_on_cpu.py
The dispatcher selects AscendMxfp8WeightQuantizer for Ascend configurations. The quantizer validates weight metadata, expands packed experts, quantizes eligible 2D high-precision weights, and yields other tensors unchanged. Tests cover dispatch, quantization outputs, packed experts, and rejection of W8A8_DYNAMIC.
Native vLLM quantization configuration
verl/workers/rollout/vllm_rollout/vllm_async_server.py, tests/utils/test_ascend_mxfp8_on_cpu.py
String-valued quantization is passed to vLLM as a native engine argument and does not produce a Hugging Face override. Structured configurations continue through the existing override path. The server logs the effective quantization configuration type.
MXFP8 detection and weight reload
verl/utils/vllm/vllm_quant_utils.py, tests/utils/test_ascend_mxfp8_on_cpu.py
Quantized-model detection recognizes Ascend ModelSlim configurations with W8A8_MXFP8. Model preparation restores eligible MXFP8 weights before loading, then reapplies weight processing afterward. Tests check detection and restore-then-process ordering.

Select the Ascend exporter for auto-detected ModelSlim models.

If a model has quant_model_description.json but no HF quantization_config, vLLM-Ascend can select Ascend quantization without rollout.quantization="ascend". This dispatcher instead returns no exporter, so refit sends unconverted weights while the rollout expects the MXFP8 weights and scales emitted by AscendMxfp8WeightQuantizer. Detect the descriptor on this path, or require the explicit setting before starting the rollout. Confirm that the deployed vLLM-Ascend version retains descriptor-based auto-detection.

Update the exporter selection in the `rollout_quantization` dispatch so
auto-detected ModelSlim models with `quant_model_description.json` and no HF
`quantization_config` use the Ascend exporter and its
`AscendMxfp8WeightQuantizer` conversion. Before relying on descriptor-based
detection, confirm the deployed vLLM-Ascend version still supports it; otherwise
require explicit Ascend quantization before rollout starts.

Outside diff Refit leaves vLLM-Ascend 0.18 MXFP8 weights in the transformed layout.

225-243: Major · Data Integrity & Integration · Heavy lift

Refit leaves vLLM-Ascend 0.18 MXFP8 weights in the transformed layout.

The trainer exporter emits each MXFP8 weight and its scale in the pre-transform layout. The vLLM-Ascend 0.18 linear and MoE schemes transform loaded weights after loading. The refit hooks run only on modules that carry _mxfp8_transformed or _mxfp8_original_shapes. vLLM-Ascend 0.18 sets neither marker and has no restore_weights_for_rl_loading. Both hooks therefore skip these modules.

Each refit bucket then loads trainer-layout tensors into parameters that already hold the transformed layout. The loader can raise a shape error. When the dimensions match, it can place transposed data without an error.

The linear and MoE paths share this root cause. The correction must cover both paths in one boundary. Before the first bucket, undo the v0.18 transform for linear and MoE modules. After the last bucket, call the native v0.18 processing method. Each inverse must match the exact reshape and transpose of its scheme. The marker-based path does not apply to v0.18 and must remain for newer versions.

Update restore_mxfp8_weights_for_loading and
apply_mxfp8_transformation_after_loading so the refit boundary also handles
vLLM-Ascend 0.18 linear and MoE schemes: before the first refit bucket, restore
trainer-layout weights using the exact inverse of each scheme’s reshape and
transpose; after the last bucket, invoke that version’s native processing
method. Establish the supported v0.18 scheme methods before implementing this
path, and preserve the existing marker-based behavior for newer versions.

Honor explicit vLLM engine quantization.

If engine_kwargs.vllm.quantization selects another method, such as fp8, vLLM retains that method even when the descriptor indicates Ascend. This branch nevertheless selects the Ascend exporter, so refit sends MXFP8 weights and scales to a different loader. Respect the engine argument or reject conflicting settings. Major · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Use the ModelSlim descriptor for trainer-side exporter selection.

When quant_model_description.json exists without an explicit engine quantization method, vLLM-Ascend selects Ascend ModelSlim. This condition suppresses the same detection whenever a native HF configuration exists. The trainer then sends native-format weights, while the quantized refit path calls the Ascend engine's model.load_weights() directly. Remove this guard so the exporter and engine use the same layout.
