After an MXFP8 weight sync, an inference kernel can keep reading stale derived weights or scales even when the incoming tensors have the expected shapes and dtypes. This PR probes one eligible dense layer and one expert after each sync, comparing the engine's actual kernel output with a reference computed from the newly loaded canonical weights. It also detects unwritten staged expert scales and rejects unsupported SGLang sync configurations.
This is the standalone self-check split of the closed#8327, prepared from fork PR #7. It targets current main directly and does not depend on the sentinel in #8495 or the separate layer audit. The original fork branch is preserved.
Format the PR title as [{modules}] {type}: {description}.
Test
On this standalone branch, based on main 2bcc98a9b64bdb3af5b88ac870ba0709ed709aef:
98 CPU tests passed using PyTorch 2.9.1 and Python 3.12. Historical [rollout, vllm, sglang, trainer] feat: refit fixes and runtime checks for MXFP8 rollouts #8327 self-check/SGLang tests were copied outside the checkout, pointed at this branch, and separated from the audit-only cases. Only test paths and stubs for main's updated NVFP4/BF16 MoE interfaces were adapted; the self-check assertions were retained. Existing main tests cover BF16 MoE storage restoration, FP8 restaging and parameter/buffer updates.
All pre-commit hooks passed on the changed files; git diff --check passed.
Commands run (the external test directory is a local validation artifact, not committed CI coverage):
Historical hardware evidence, not rerun on this rebased branch:fork PR #7 records 1×B200 runs with vLLM 0.29.0, SGLang 0.5.20, Transformer Engine 2.16.1 and Megatron-Core 0.19.2. Two GRPO steps on a tiny Qwen3-MoE passed after every sync with dense relative error 0.026 and expert error 0.047–0.048. BF16 training with MXFP8 rollout also passed. Deliberately corrupting expert scales failed the first sync; changing weights across training steps kept the errors within tolerance. The same source records earlier 4×B200 Qwen3-30B-A3B validation.
Current main pins vLLM 0.32.0. Its routed-expert entry points and MXFP8 method were inspected, but these CPU tests use engine stand-ins and do not establish GPU/kernel compatibility with that version. Fresh B200 validation remains outstanding.
API and Usage Example
# Default is warn: log a failed probe and continue.export VERL_MXFP8_REFIT_CHECK=raise
export VERL_MXFP8_REFIT_CHECK_TOL=0.25
# Optional: override the expert threshold; otherwise it inherits the dense threshold.export VERL_MXFP8_REFIT_CHECK_MOE_TOL=0.25
# VERL_MXFP8_REFIT_CHECK=0 disables the checks.
The check samples the smallest eligible dense layer and one expert of the smallest MXFP8 MoE layer. Unsupported routing/parallel configurations warn and skip the expert probe. It runs eagerly and does not verify CUDA graph replay or every model layer.
Design & Code Changes
Shared dequantized reference, finite-value checks and relative-error probes in verl/utils/mxfp8_refit_check.py; vLLM and SGLang adapters capture canonical tensors before kernel layout processing and run the probes afterward.
SGLang fills staged expert scales with 0xFF and reports any unwritten entries. It rejects re-laid-out BF16 experts and delta sync with a quantized rollout before writing incompatible payloads.
Documents the probe, controls and limitations in docs/low_precision/mxfp8.md.
AI assistance was used for the original implementation and for this standalone port, conflict resolution and CPU validation with Codex. The original human review and hardware validation are recorded in fork PR #7; the main-port adjustments and outstanding GPU validation are identified above for review.
Apply the full-repository pre-commit command from the template. All hooks were run successfully on the changed files; --all-files was not run.
Update the documentation.
Add unit or end-to-end tests to CI. The split intentionally retains the original decision to omit new test files; the external CPU regression run and historical hardware evidence above are not a claim of added CI coverage.
Request CI in the community channel. Not sent from this submission.
Split the refit self-check from verl-project#8327 onto main without the sentinel or layer audit. Retain main’s existing BF16 MoE and NVFP4 handling; add sampled canonical-reference probes and SGLang sync guards.

Added optional MXFP8 checks after weight synchronization for SGLang and vLLM, comparing selected dense and MoE outputs with reference results. Checks can warn and continue, raise an error, or be disabled; tolerance settings are configurable.
Added warnings for missing MXFP8 scale data and situations where MoE checks are skipped.
Bug Fixes
Unsupported quantized delta-sync configurations and certain relaid BF16 MoE layouts are now rejected before weight synchronization.
Documentation
Updated the MXFP8 guide with check settings, limitations, and unsupported configurations.
Adds configurable MXFP8 post-sync checks for SGLang and vLLM. The checks compare selected dense and MoE kernel outputs with references from dequantized canonical weights. SGLang also reports unwritten expert scales and refuses specified quantized delta-sync and BF16 MoE layout configurations.
Adds environment-controlled failure reporting, dequantization, and linear and MoE expert probes. The documentation describes modes, tolerances, skip conditions, and limitations.
SGLang probes and sync guards verl/utils/sglang/sglang_mxfp8_refit_check.py, verl/utils/sglang/sglang_fp8_utils.py, verl/utils/sglang/sglang_quant_utils.py, verl/workers/rollout/sglang_rollout/sglang_rollout.py, docs/low_precision/mxfp8.md
Adds SGLang probes and sync-time checks for unwritten scales and BF16 MoE layouts. Delta sync now rejects configurations with a resolved quantization config.
vLLM probes and sync integration verl/utils/vllm/vllm_mxfp8_refit_check.py, verl/utils/vllm/vllm_quant_utils.py
Adds vLLM linear and MoE probes. Weight processing captures canonical references before layout restoration and checks the resulting layers.

Prevent malformed tolerance values from aborting weight sync.
float() runs before the probe exception handlers. A malformed tolerance can therefore escape the self-check and abort a healthy vLLM or SGLang refit, despite the documented warn behavior. Parse both settings through one fallback helper. Make the fallback lazy so a valid VERL_MXFP8_REFIT_CHECK_MOE_TOL does not evaluate an invalid linear tolerance.

Update refit_check_tolerance and refit_check_moe_tolerance to use a shared
tolerance parser that falls back instead of raising on malformed environment
values. Keep the MOE fallback lazy so a valid VERL_MXFP8_REFIT_CHECK_MOE_TOL
does not evaluate the linear tolerance setting.

rg -nP -C4 'delta_sharded' --type=py
rg -nP -C4 'wire_format\s*=\s*"delta_flush"|delta_flush' --type=py
Do not reject hybrid replicas that use the bucketed path.
The hybrid checkpoint manager forces its own backend to "naive", and the resulting update calls self.rollout.update_weights(...) without wire_format="delta_flush". The SGLang adapter still reads the original rollout configuration during construction, so a quantized hybrid replica with backend="delta_sharded" fails at initialization even though it would use the bucketed path.
Keep the rejection on the wire_format == "delta_flush" branch, or limit the constructor guard to standalone delta-sync workers.

Adjust the constructor guard that calls refuse_delta_sync_if_quantized so it
does not reject hybrid replicas using the bucketed update path; limit it to
standalone delta-sync workers. Preserve rejection for updates that actually use
the delta_flush wire format.
