Implements: TUI-RATATUI-001

Closes #934

What this adds

  • Standalone Termux-first Rust dashboard under integrations/ratatui-tokio-dashboard
  • Tokio bounded async event pipeline
  • Dirty-state redraw coalescing
  • Ratatui responsive layout for streams, latency, throughput, CPU, memory, processes, and runtime
  • /proc-backed metrics with graceful fallback
  • Deterministic stream producer seam for later real event adapters
  • Unit tests for model/dirty-state behavior
  • Path-scoped Rust CI for fmt/check/test

Validation contract

  • cargo fmt --check
  • cargo generate-lockfile + cargo check --locked
  • cargo test --locked
  • repository repo-gate
  • repository termux-smoke

The local execution environment does not include Cargo, so Rust execution is intentionally delegated to the scoped GitHub Actions lane rather than claimed locally.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a standalone terminal dashboard displaying CPU and memory usage, system load, top processes, and stream activity, latency, and throughput.
    • Navigate stream selections with the arrow keys or j/k, refresh with r, and quit with q or Escape.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup and usage guidance, including Termux launch instructions and keyboard controls.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Adds a standalone Tokio and Ratatui dashboard integration. It collects system metrics, processes stream and input events, and renders a terminal interface. The change also adds proposal records, usage documentation, and a workflow for Rust formatting, checking, and tests.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 45484

Fix queued quit handling before merging: the dashboard can remain running and stop accepting keyboard input. RSS reporting on 16 KiB-page devices and throughput history also need correction for accurate displays.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 45484

The dashboard’s exposure is confined to the local terminal process and system information readable by its user. A shutdown-ordering defect can leave the dashboard running after quit, with keyboard handling already stopped. No expanded service access or elevated authority was established, but incomplete security coverage prevents a minimal-risk assessment.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · observed: Control-path termination is not reliably propagated to the dashboard lifecycle. A Quit drained behind another event exits only the drain loop; the input worker stops, while metrics and stream producers continue and terminal restoration is not reached. Input polling or read failures likewise stop the input worker without terminating the producer-backed runtime. This undermines local failure containment and terminal ownership recovery.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported exposure is the invoking user’s terminal session and system information available to that process. The shutdown defect strands local runtime activity; the inspected paths do not establish cross-tenant access, credential access, persistent configuration changes, or authority escalation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Keyboard input is restricted to fixed navigation, refresh, and quit actions. Stream updates are generated internally. The checked event path updates display state rather than executing commands or forwarding input to another service.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Channel backpressure and bounded histories constrain retained event and chart data. They do not guarantee lifecycle recovery: producers remain active after a drained Quit, while the input worker has already returned.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use one terminal shutdown transition for Quit regardless of its queue position, propagate control-worker failure to that transition, and couple producer cancellation with terminal cleanup on both successful and error exits.

Explanation

Issue #934 requires a standalone Termux-first Tokio/Ratatui dashboard with bounded async event sources, dirty redraw coalescing, metrics with fallback, stream and process views, keyboard navigation, terminal restoration, a testable model, documentation, and the listed validation gates. The reviewed files provide these features. The reported CI results cover cargo fmt --check, cargo check --locked, cargo test --locked, repo-gate, and termux-smoke. However, main.rs only exits when the first received event is InputAction::Quit. If a quit event arrives during the try_recv drain, the code breaks only the inner loop and then waits for another event. The input task has already stopped, so the dashboard can remain running and cannot complete its clean exit path.

Commit and use the dashboard lockfile in CI.

cargo generate-lockfile resolves a fresh dependency graph on each run. --locked still prevents later lockfile changes, but it does not enforce a committed dependency graph. This is a reproducibility improvement, not a current build failure.

Commit integrations/ratatui-tokio-dashboard/Cargo.lock and remove the generation step. The workflow is under .github/workflows/**, so the OPERATOR must apply this change.

Remove the “Resolve dependency graph” step from the workflow so CI uses the
committed dependency graph with the existing locked check and test commands.
Ensure the dashboard’s Cargo.lock is committed; do not generate a fresh lockfile

Throughput history grows on every per-stream update, not once per tick.

stream_task sends STREAM_COUNT (6) updates per 125 ms tick. Each update pushes a new sum into throughput_history. The result has two problems:

  • The 48-entry history covers only 8 ticks, which is about 1 second.
  • Each tick adds five partial sums that mix new and old values for the other streams.

The sparkline therefore shows intermediate sawtooth values instead of one throughput sample per interval. Push history once per tick. You can do this with a batch event or by pushing only when update.stream == STREAM_COUNT - 1.

Update the AppEvent::Stream handling to add one throughput_history sample per

preserve the current throughput calculation using all streams.

Propagate a drained quit to the outer loop.

When rx.recv() receives a non-quit event, the drain can consume a queued Quit and break only the inner loop. Update the event loop in run so a Quit consumed while draining rx.try_recv()

after either path receives Quit.

Read the runtime page size for RSS reporting.

On a 16 KiB-page kernel, read_rss_kb multiplies each resident-page count by 4096, so RSS values are understated by 4x. The constant factor preserves process ranking, so sorting is not incorrect. The renderer still displays RSS values that are too low.

Read the runtime page size, or use the VmRSS value from /proc/<pid>/status, which is already reported in kB. The README documents this as a current limitation, but 16 KiB Android kernels make it a concrete reporting defect for the Termux target.

## Walkthrough

Adds a standalone Tokio and Ratatui dashboard integration. It collects system metrics, processes stream and input events, and renders a terminal interface. The change also adds proposal records, usage documentation, and a workflow for Rust formatting, checking, and tests.
