Closes SB-2216

What I did

Removed the storybook ai command from Storybook 11. Most of the diff is deletion (about 6,100 lines removed, 460 added).

Before After
storybook ai setup npx storybook skills setup (breaking, documented in MIGRATION.md)
storybook ai <tool> storybook tools <toolset> <tool> (not breaking, see below)

There is no alias or shim: storybook ai no longer runs anything. Until Storybook 12 the dispatcher catches storybook ai itself and exits with code 1 and a message pointing at npx storybook skills setup and npx storybook tools. Without that, agents that learned storybook ai setup from Storybook 10 docs would get @storybook/cli's generic Did you mean add? hint, and in a project without @storybook/cli that package would be downloaded first.

storybook ai <tool> is not a breaking change because it was only registered when the STORYBOOK_FEATURE_AI_CLI environment variable was set.

The one behavior that moved

storybook ai setup did two things besides printing the prompt, and the dev server depends on both:

  • It wrote the ai-setup-ran cache flag, which marks "Set up with AI" as done in the onboarding checklist.
  • It sent the ai-setup telemetry event, which ghost stories and the post-setup scoring events key off.

storybook skills setup did neither. storybook init already pointed agents at skills setup, so those projects never completed the checklist item. This PR fixes that: skills setup now does both, in the new cli/skills/record-setup-run.ts. The cache key and the event name are unchanged, so the readers and existing dashboards keep working.

It records only when the setup skill itself is requested, not for skills --all.

The "Copy prompt" button in the Storybook UI and the eval harness in scripts/eval now use skills setup too.

What was removed

  • The command: code/core/src/cli/ai/ and its registration in bin/core.ts and bin/dispatcher.ts.
  • Code only the passthrough used: cli/tools/mcp-client.ts, plus resolveInstance and InterceptReason in cli/tools/instances/. The instance-selection tests now call selectInstances directly.
  • In @storybook/addon-mcp: the experimental_storybookAi preset, storybook-ai-metadata.ts, the local-tool layer in the tool registry, resolveServerlessCompositionSources, and the X-Storybook-MCP-Proxy header with its cliClient context field.
  • In cli/skills: isModuleGraphSupportedByBuilder and the getToolAvailability override, which only the removed metadata build used.
  • Telemetry: the ai-command event type and its cancellation tracking.
  • Lint: the boundaries that kept cli/tools and cli/skills independent of cli/ai.

Kept on purpose: the mcp field on runtime instance records. Nothing in this repo reads it anymore, but the registry file is shared on disk between Storybook versions.

Unrelated correction: scripts/eval/README.md named pattern-copy-play as the default setup prompt; it is optimized-tests.

Two small fixes in skills setup

Migrating from ai setup exposed two differences. skills setup now probes the project with a config dir relative to the current directory, as ai setup did:

  • skills setup -c ., run from the project directory, looked for tsconfig.json in the parent directory, so a TypeScript project got JavaScript instructions. Combining --cwd <dir> with -c . still has this problem; ai setup had no --cwd.
  • The prompt printed absolute paths (/Users/.../.storybook/preview.tsx). Paths are relative to the current directory again: .storybook/preview.tsx, or packages/ui/.storybook/preview.tsx with --cwd packages/ui.

One difference remains and is in MIGRATION.md: when skills setup cannot produce the instructions it exits with code 1, where ai setup exited with 0.

Telemetry changes

  • addon-mcp events keep their transport field, now always 'mcp'. The 'cli' value could only come from the removed passthrough.
  • ai-setup no longer carries cliOptions.output (skills setup has no --output option) or cliOptions.configDir.
  • A setup run also emits skills-get with skill: 'setup'. Its surrounding boot and error events carry eventType: 'skills-get' instead of 'ai-setup'.
  • Like every skills command, skills setup treats telemetry as enabled when the main config cannot be loaded; ai setup treated it as disabled. --disable-telemetry and STORYBOOK_DISABLE_TELEMETRY still win.

Known limitation

The setup flag is stored in the cache of the directory the command runs in, not of the target project. Running skills setup -c <dir> or --cwd <dir> from a different directory than the one Storybook starts in can leave the checklist item open. ai setup -c behaved the same way, so this is not a regression. The docs tell users to run the command from the directory where they start Storybook. #36625 fixes this on next for ai setup; whichever of the two merges second switches record-setup-run.ts to writeProjectScopedFlag and drops that docs sentence.

No automigration

storybook ai setup is a command an agent runs once from a prompt. Projects do not keep it in package.json scripts, so there is nothing to migrate.

Testing

The changes in this PR are covered in the following automated tests:

  • stories
  • unit tests
  • integration tests
  • end-to-end tests

Manual testing

  1. Compile: yarn nx run-many -t compile.
  2. From code/, run node core/dist/bin/dispatcher.js ai setup. It prints The `storybook ai` command was removed in Storybook 11. with the replacement commands, and exits with code 1.
  3. From code/, run node core/dist/bin/dispatcher.js skills setup. It prints the # Storybook Setup Markdown for the internal Storybook, with relative paths such as .storybook/preview.tsx.
  4. Check that the run was recorded: node -e "import('storybook/internal/common').then(async (m) => console.log(await m.cache.get('ai-setup-ran')))" prints an object with timestamp, runId and the absolute configDir.
  5. Run node core/dist/bin/dispatcher.js tools --help and check that the tools are still listed.
  6. Optional, in a sandbox created with the ai feature accepted (the checklist item only shows when the project opted into AI during storybook init): open the onboarding guide in settings and check that "Copy prompt" copies Run `npx storybook skills setup` and follow its instructions precisely.

Walkthrough

This pull request removes the storybook ai command and its MCP metadata integration. It records setup-run data through storybook skills setup, simplifies tools instance selection, and updates migration guidance and command references.

Changes

AI CLI retirement and skills setup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remove the AI CLI command
code/core/src/bin/core.ts, code/core/src/bin/dispatcher.ts, code/core/src/cli/ai/*
The core CLI no longer registers ai, and the dispatcher no longer routes it to the core binary. The AI setup and tool-execution modules and their tests are removed.
Remove addon AI metadata integration
code/addons/mcp/scripts/*, code/addons/mcp/src/*
The MCP addon no longer builds or exposes Storybook AI metadata or local tool implementations. The generated API reference no longer includes AI CLI help.
Record skills setup runs
code/core/src/cli/skills/run.ts, code/core/src/cli/skills/register.ts, code/core/src/cli/skills/record-setup-run.ts, code/core/src/cli/skills/*.test.ts
Successful setup skill results include project information and the prompt. The command runner records setup data in the cache and sends setup telemetry.
Use service-based module graph availability
code/core/src/cli/skills/availability.ts, code/core/src/cli/skills/project-info.ts, code/core/src/core-server/index.ts
Module-graph availability now uses the registered service rather than an override or builder capability probe. getProjectInfo no longer accepts a package-manager override.
Simplify tools instance selection
code/core/src/cli/tools/instances/*, code/core/src/cli/tools/mcp-client.*, code/core/src/telemetry/*, code/core/src/core-server/withTelemetry.*
The resolveInstance dispatch API and CLI MCP client are removed. Tests cover selectInstances results. The ai-command telemetry event and its cancellation handling are removed.
Update command references and migration guidance
.agents/guidelines/architecture.md, MIGRATION.md, code/.oxlintrc.json, code/core/src/cli/*, code/core/src/core-server/*, code/core/src/shared/*, docs/api/cli-options.mdx, scripts/eval/*
Migration guidance and CLI documentation describe skills setup and storybook tools in place of removed AI commands. Related references and import restrictions are updated.

Running skills setup --cwd from another directory can leave the target project’s setup checklist open. The documented same-directory workaround makes this a bounded, recoverable limitation.

Move the setup mock override into a beforeEach.

The test-file guidance requires mock implementations in beforeEach and lists inline implementations in test cases as an avoided pattern. Keep the stories default in the outer hook, and scope the setup response to a nested hook so the stories test keeps its distinct behavior.

Use a lightweight package-manager fixture.

The forced-NPM path skips environment-based manager detection, but it still resolves process.cwd(), walks for package.json files, and reads candidates during module initialization. recordSetupRun only reads the fixed .type value, so this I/O does not change the test’s assertion. A small fixture avoids the unnecessary work.

…upported skills flags from docs

An absolute config dir made `--config-dir .` resolve the project directory to its parent, so
language detection missed the project's tsconfig, and the setup prompt printed absolute paths.
`--logfile` and `--enable-crash-reports` have no effect on `storybook skills`.

Write the setup flag to the target project's cache.

If a user runs skills setup --cwd <dir> from another directory, this cache.set uses the command's working directory. The project's dev server can then miss ai-setup-ran, so the setup checklist stays open after a successful command. Storing an absolute configDir inside the flag does not move the cache write. Scope the write to the target project and cover this invocation in a test.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff comment on record-setup-run.ts:13 (setup flag written to the cwd cache with --cwd): valid, and deliberately not fixed here. It is listed under "Known limitation" in the PR description.

The cache location comes from resolvePathInStorybookCache, which is derived from process.cwd() for every consumer: the shared cache, the telemetry event cache, and the dev server that reads the flag. The dev server also resolves it from its own cwd, which is not necessarily the target project directory (for example a monorepo root with -c packages/ui/.storybook). Scoping only this one write to the target project would therefore not reliably make the reader find it; it needs a project-scoped cache on both sides, which is a separate change from removing the ai command.

The removed storybook ai setup had no --cwd option, so nothing regresses for the migration path, and the docs tell users to run the command from the directory where Storybook starts.

@kasperpeulen Thanks for the clarification. A writer-only change would not reliably fix this. The setup writer and dev-server reader need the same project-scoped cache location.

I checked record-setup-run.ts and confirmed the working-directory guidance in docs/api/cli-options.mdx. I agree that this documented limitation can remain outside #36617. No change is needed for this finding in this PR.

Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for project-scoped cache resolution on both sides?

Learning: In Storybook, resolvePathInStorybookCache derives cache locations from process.cwd(), including the shared cache and telemetry event cache. code/core/src/cli/skills/record-setup-run.ts writes ai-setup-ran through the shared cache, and the dev server reads the flag from its own cwd-derived cache. The dev server cwd can be a monorepo root rather than the target project directory. Changing only the setup writer to use the target project would not reliably fix skills setup --cwd checklist detection; the writer and reader need coordinated project-scoped cache resolution. PR #36617 deliberately defers this documented limitation. The removed storybook ai setup command had no --cwd option, and docs/api/cli-options.mdx directs users to run skills setup from the directory where they start Storybook.
