The indexer ran the preprocessors from svelte.config.js before it parsed a stories file. SvelteKit 3 has no svelte.config.js, and plain Svelte projects can pass the config inline to the Vite plugin, so the indexer missed it in both cases. The indexer only reads defineMeta and <Story> attributes, and Svelte 5 parses type-only TypeScript natively. It now compiles the file as it is, and when that fails, it blanks the content of <style> blocks, keeping newlines so positions don't move, and compiles again. This also removes the renderer's optional peer dependency on @sveltejs/vite-plugin-svelte. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
setImportMap replaced the whole imports field, so a SvelteKit 3 sandbox lost the #lib subpath import that `sv create` adds. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The sandbox task checks whether an in-development sandbox exists before it asks for the generate task. It looked for the template key, such as `svelte-kit/skeleton-ts`, but the sandbox directory is `svelte-kit-skeleton-ts`. So every later CI job, which restores the sandbox but not the generated repro, failed with "Task generate was not ready". Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

SvelteKit 3 renamed and removed several of the modules that Storybook mocks or passes through: - $app/stores is gone, so the mock and the `stores` parameter are removed. The $app/navigation mock gets refreshAll and snapshot, and afterNavigate always passes a navigation object, which code from `sv migrate` destructures. - $app/env, $app/paths, $app/manifest and $app/env/public read a payload, constants and a global that SvelteKit's compile plugin and HTML provide. Storybook removes that plugin, so it defines the payload and the manifest constants for builds, and adds the global to the generated $app/env/public module in development. - $app/env/private and $app/server now fail to load in the browser, because Storybook would otherwise serve or bundle private values. - SvelteKit 3 makes its `static` directory Vite's public directory. Vite serves it in dev mode, and Storybook now also copies it in builds. - SvelteKit's compile plugin runs `svelte-kit sync` in builds, and Storybook removes that plugin, so Storybook runs the sync itself before a build. Without it, a build fails when `$app/tsconfig` is missing. @storybook/sveltekit now requires @sveltejs/kit 3 and Vite 8, and `storybook upgrade` blocks projects on SvelteKit < 3. The sandbox template scaffolds SvelteKit 3 past the 7-day age gate until the published sandbox has it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

PR storybookjs#36610 added a workaround to the svelte-kit/skeleton-ts template. SvelteKit 3 and sv 1.x were younger than the 7-day npm age gate, so the template used --min-release-age=0, minAgeGateExemptions and inDevelopment: true. Both releases are now older than the gate, and the published sandbox has SvelteKit 3. The workaround is no longer necessary. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Closes #36491
What I did
Added support for SvelteKit 3 and dropped support for SvelteKit 2.
Additionally removed support for custom Svelte preprocessors (user-defined scripts that changes the Svelte files), because SvelteKit 3 moves them from
svelte.config.tstovite.config.ts, which makes them hard for us to detect and apply. The preprocessors still run at runtime, but not when we index the Svelte CSF stories. However, the vast majority of preprocessor usage is to use custom CSS dialects like SCSS, so when Svelte fails to compile the file during indexing, we try to "blank out all<style>content" and try again, which works in all known cases. So that way we still support the majority of preprocessors indirectly. How to review

feat(sveltekit)!: support SvelteKit 3 and drop SvelteKit 2 (SB-1909, SB-1910)SvelteKit 3 modules
I checked each module in a SvelteKit 3.0.0 sandbox, in
storybook dev, storybook buildand the Vitest addon.$app/stores: SvelteKit 3 removed it. The mock andparameters.sveltekit_experimental.storesare removed too. SvelteKit's own stub gives a clear error.$app/envand$app/paths: these worked in dev, but crashed in builds with__SVELTEKIT_PAYLOAD__ is not defined. SvelteKit's compile plugin defines that constant, and Storybook removes that plugin. Storybook now defines the constant for builds.$app/manifest: has the real values in dev. In a build, SvelteKit fills its constants after its own server build, which Storybook doesn't run, so every list is empty.$app/env/public: crashed in dev, because the module readsglobalThis.__sveltekit_dev, which SvelteKit's HTML sets. A dev-only plugin now adds the global to the generated module, so the order in which modules load doesn't matter. Static variables work. Dynamic variables areundefined.$app/env/privateand$app/server: in dev, Storybook served private env values to the browser, and a build inlined static private values. A new plugin makes these imports fail in the browser environment, for regular and linked SvelteKit installs. Remote functions still load in dev, because SvelteKit reads.remote.tsfiles in the server environment.$app/navigation: the mock getsrefreshAll, plussnapshotas a no-op.afterNavigatenow always passes a full navigation object (type: 'enter',shallow: false). Before, it passedundefinedunless a story set the parameter, and code thatsv migratewrites, such asafterNavigate(({ shallow }) => …), crashed.#lib: works through Vite's support for subpath imports. The sandbox script replaced the project'simportsfield, which removed#lib. It now merges.staticdirectory: SvelteKit 3 makes it Vite's public directory. Vite serves it in dev, butstorybook buildonly copies the public directory from the Vite config file. A newstaticDirspreset copiesstaticin builds, so dev and build match. The sandbox's static-dirs e2e fixture now writes tostatic.svelte-kit sync: SvelteKit's compile plugin runs it in builds, and Storybook removes that plugin.storybook buildnow runssvelte-kit syncitself. Without it, a build failed whennode_modules/$app/tsconfig.jsonwas missing, for example after an install with scripts turned off. It adds about 2.5 seconds to a build. The list of SvelteKit plugins that Storybook removes stays the same.
