CLI: Install skills with the AI feature instead of addon-mcp - #36561
kasperpeulen merged 18 commits into
Conversation
The skills run on core through `storybook tools` and `storybook skills`, so an agent-run project no longer needs @storybook/addon-mcp. - create-storybook: the AI feature no longer maps to an addon. - storybook upgrade: remove the addon-mcp automigration. - react-vite/default-ts sandbox: register addon-mcp explicitly, since the addon-mcp e2e spec runs on it and relied on init adding the addon. …op-adding-addon-mcp-on-init-and-upgrade
…e on upgrade Init: the AI feature now covers the skills install and the setup prompt, behind one question. The separate skills prompt and --skills / --no-skills are gone. Upgrade: refresh the skills when the project has them (skills-lock.json), otherwise offer them once on the upgrade from before 11 on a supported framework. The answer is no longer stored in ~/.storybook/settings.json. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
- read the framework after the automigrations - offer the skills to projects on 11 prereleases that did not offer them yet - leave canaries alone, they have no skills tag - match skills installed through a git URL - print how to install the skills later when the install fails - cover the init wiring with a test Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…rver The AI question and the upgrade offer now cover the frameworks whose presets export a docgen provider (React, Vue 3, Angular-Vite). The setup prompt, the test feature and the onboarding removal stay limited to the projects that storybook skills setup supports. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

What I did
The AI feature of
create storybooknow installs the Storybook skills instead of@storybook/addon-mcp, andstorybook upgradestops adding the addon too. The skills run on core (storybook tools, storybook skills), so a project set up by an agent no longer needs the addon. Projects that have it keep it.This also folds the separate skills question and the
--skills/--no-skillsflags from #36431 (not released yet) into the AI feature, as agreed with Michael on 2026-10-02.create storybookDo you want AI features, like skills and prompts, in your Storybook?(default yes), on frameworks that have, or are getting, a docgen server: React (not React Native), Vue 3 + Vite, Angular-Vite, Svelte and Web Components. Agents,--yesand runs without a terminal get the feature without the question. It is not asked when scaffolding into an empty directory.--yesor--features ... ai; init warns instead. Onnext, the skills were offered on every framework.storybook upgradeskillsautomigration: on the upgrade into 11, projects on a supported framework without the skills are offered them once. It is selected by default and installed with--yes.npx storybook automigrate skillsinstalls them later on a supported framework, for example on a project that is already on an 11 prerelease.skills-lock.jsonlistsstorybookjs/skills.addon-mcpautomigration and theagentSkillssetting are removed.--skills/--no-skillsare removed from both commands. Nothing runs in CI: the install and the refresh are skipped there, and the automigration is not listed. A failed install warns with the command to install the skills later and does not fail the upgrade.Worth a look
supportsSkillsinstorybook/internal/cliis a hardcoded framework list on purpose. Reading thedocgenServerflag would need the presets, which are not installed yet when init asks, and which the automigrations do not load.react-vite/default-tssandbox now lists@storybook/addon-mcpexplicitly, soaddon-mcp.spec.tskeeps running. The other React + Vite sandboxes, including thebench/ones, lose the addon.sourceandresultvalues of the unreleasedskillspayload change.skillsis also offered whereangular-to-angular-viteis offered. It installs only when that migration ran first, and otherwise warns how to install the skills afterwards.Checklist for Contributors
