Closes SB-2184

What I did

The Claude and Codex plugin skills no longer tell the agent to install @storybook/addon-mcp. The plugin evals now run on projects without it, to prove the skills work without it. The eval templates also drop the unused @storybook/mcp.

Why: the skills only use storybook tools and storybook skills. Those commands are built into Storybook core (stories, docs, review) and @storybook/addon-vitest (test). They don't need addon-mcp.

Related: #36561 already stopped create storybook and storybook upgrade from adding the addon. After this PR, nothing in the plugin path asks for it.

No runtime code changes: only skills, READMEs and the eval harness.

Skills and READMEs

File Change
stories skill Prerequisite "install @storybook/addon-mcp" removed
storybook-init skill Step "npx storybook add @storybook/addon-mcp" removed
Both plugin READMEs init no longer "installs addon-mcp"; the Tools section says the tools come through the storybook tools CLI

The Codex skills are re-rendered from the Claude skills. The version wording (Storybook 11, @next while 11.0 is unreleased) is unchanged from #36564.

Evals

An eval run pairs an experiment (agent plus setup, e.g. cc-plugin-* is Claude Code with the plugin) with an eval (a task, e.g. 801). Each pair is a cell.

Before After
Templates and the 812 fixture List addon-mcp and @storybook/mcp List neither
Plugin experiments (cc-plugin-*, codex-plugin-*) Ran with addon-mcp Run without it
MCP experiments (cc-mcp-*, codex-mcp-*) Got the addon from the template Sandbox setup adds it (addMcpAddon)
Sandbox postinstall (starts Storybook) Waited for /mcp MCP experiments still wait for /mcp. All others wait for /index.json, because there is no /mcp without the addon
Eval 820 (init in an empty project) Asserted addon-mcp is installed and registered Only checks that Storybook is installed and boots

820 can't check that the addon is absent yet. The published create storybook (@next, 11.0.0-alpha.1) still adds it until #36561 is released.

Worth a look

  • addMcpAddon edits .storybook/main.ts with a regex on addons: [...] and throws if the list is missing. A test runs it on every template and fixture main.ts.
  • No template lists addon-mcp any more, so readTemplateCheckoutPackages adds it by hand. That keeps the pre-run compile step building it for the MCP experiments.
  • The plugin homepage in both plugin.json files still links to the MCP docs page. There is no non-MCP docs page for the tools yet.

Evidence

  • Plugin sandbox (eval 801, set up locally): addon-mcp is not in package.json, main.ts or node_modules, and /mcp returns 404. skills stories, tools docs list, stories preview, review create and test run all work.
  • MCP sandbox (eval 813): has the addon, and tools/list on /mcp returns the stories, docs and test tools.
  • Full eval run, 56/56 cells passed. Commit 67fe63a1b7, Vercel Sandbox, all 8xx evals on all four experiments (what ci:eval plus ci:extra-evals runs). The plugin cells ran without addon-mcp, and the MCP cells had it. Estimated agent cost: $12.

No regression against #36433: its five evals pass on all four experiments in both runs. The MCP cells now run with review on (since #36562); in #36433 those were the EVAL_REVIEW=1 cells.

In 820–823 the project ends up with addon-mcp anyway. The skills don't ask for it: the published CLI adds it (create storybook and the addon-mcp automigration in storybook upgrade, 10.6.1 and 11.0.0-alpha.1). #36561 removes that, but it is not released yet.

None of the 56 transcripts shows the review create crash from SB-2189 (fixed in #36586).

Testing

The changes in this PR are covered in the following automated tests:

  • stories
  • unit tests
  • integration tests
  • end-to-end tests

Manual testing

Run from the repository root.

  1. Run yarn nx compile claude-plugin, then git status. Expect no changes. This confirms the Codex skills match the Claude skills.
  2. Run (cd code/lib/claude-plugin && yarn run -T vitest run). Expect all tests to pass.
  3. Run (cd agent-eval && yarn vitest run lib/templates.test.ts lib/mcp/start-storybook-mcp.test.ts). Expect all tests to pass.
  4. Run grep -rn addon-mcp code/lib/claude-plugin/skills code/lib/codex-plugin/plugins code/lib/claude-plugin/README.md code/lib/codex-plugin/README.md. Expect no output.
  5. Create a project with npm create storybook@next. Remove the addon: run npm uninstall @storybook/addon-mcp and delete it from addons in .storybook/main.ts. Install the plugin from this checkout with yarn workspace @storybook/claude-code-plugin run plugin:install (Codex: see code/lib/codex-plugin/LOCAL_DEVELOPMENT.md). Ask the agent for a visual change to a component. Expect it to finish with a Storybook review, and package.json to still have no @storybook/addon-mcp.

Walkthrough

MCP sandbox setup adds the addon to Storybook configuration and package manifests. Startup readiness checks /mcp for MCP integrations and /index.json for other integrations. Plugin instructions and eval assertions no longer require manual addon installation.

Changes

Storybook integration setup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure the addon by integration
agent-eval/lib/templates.ts, agent-eval/lib/templates.test.ts, agent-eval/templates/..., agent-eval/evals/812-first-story-empty-project/..., agent-eval/evals/820-init-no-storybook/EVAL.ts
MCP sandbox setup adds @storybook/addon-mcp to matching Storybook configs and adjacent package manifests. Template and eval fixtures no longer declare the addon by default. Tests check addon injection, and the lifecycle eval checks for Storybook without asserting addon installation.
Check readiness by integration
agent-eval/lib/mcp/start-storybook-mcp.mjs, agent-eval/lib/mcp/start-storybook-mcp.test.ts
Startup checks /mcp for MCP integrations and /index.json otherwise. Diagnostics report the selected readiness URL, and non-MCP integrations skip MCP debug snapshots. Tests cover readiness failures for both endpoints.
Update plugin instructions and descriptions
code/lib/claude-plugin/..., code/lib/codex-plugin/...
Plugin instructions no longer require or install the MCP addon. Plugin descriptions state that agents access Storybook MCP server tools through the storybook tools CLI.

The current launcher checks Storybook readiness, but the plugin test does not verify that a ready Storybook allows installation to proceed. Add a success-path test as a bounded follow-up; the evidence does not show that installs currently fail.

The skills no longer ask for @storybook/addon-mcp; nothing they use needs it.
The eval templates drop the addon and sandbox setup adds it for the MCP
experiments only, so the plugin experiments run on a project without it.

Test the launcher with a successful /index.json response.

The new plugin test uses a port with no server and only asserts the timeout failure. An implementation that always returns false from servesStoryIndex() can still pass those assertions. Since generated sandboxes run this script during postinstall, that regression can make plugin installs fail even when Storybook serves the index. Add a success-path test that returns HTTP 200 for /index.json and asserts that the launcher exits successfully.

@coderabbitai Re the nitpick on start-storybook-mcp.test.ts (success path for the /index.json wait): not adding it. Every plugin cell in the full eval run (28 sandboxes, 56/56 cells passed, see the PR description) runs this postinstall and only starts once /index.json answers, so the success path is covered end to end. A unit test would need an async harness with a fake server, because the current tests use spawnSync, which blocks an in-process server.

@kasperpeulen Thanks for clarifying. The reported plugin eval run covers the /index.json success path end to end. I confirmed that runInstall uses spawnSync, which blocks an in-process fake server.

That coverage is sufficient for this change. I withdraw the unit-test nitpick.

Learning: In Storybook's agent-eval harness, plugin sandboxes run agent-eval/lib/mcp/start-storybook-mcp.mjs during postinstall and proceed only after /index.json returns a successful response. The author reports that PR #36559's full eval run passed all 56 cells, including 28 plugin sandboxes, covering this success path end to end. agent-eval/lib/mcp/start-storybook-mcp.test.ts uses spawnSync in runInstall, which blocks an in-process fake server; such a server would require an asynchronous harness. Do not require a duplicate success-path unit test for this change.
