The fix read and wrote main and preview itself with node:fs and branched on dryRun. It now reads the preview through the read-only files in check, and moves storySort with two hooks: the main hook adds it, the preview hook removes it. Any reason the move is unsafe fails the main hook, and the runner leaves the preview alone when a fix fails on the main config, so both files stay untouched as before. The tests drive the fix through checkFix and runFix without casts.
…ySort Replace the single top-level `storySort` with a `storySorts` array read through `presets.apply`, so addons can contribute sorters. Each sorter breaks the ties of the ones before it. The preview's `parameters.options.storySort` keeps working and sorts after all `storySorts`. The story-sort-to-main automigration now writes `storySorts: [value]`.
Only storySorts in main sort stories. A preview that still mentions storySort gets a one-time warning pointing to the automigration.

…storySort The check treated any ConfigFile diagnostic as a possible unreadable storySort, so a preview that spreads a shared config or wraps an imported object got the fix offered and failed, although it has no storySort at all.

Closes #30429
What I did
Story sorting is configured in the preview today, as
parameters.options.storySort, so only one sorter exists and addons cannot add their own. This PR replaces it with
storySortsin the main config: an array of sorters that Storybook reads throughpresets.apply, so addons can contribute sorters the same way they contribute other preset fields.Storybook no longer reads
storySortfrom the preview. Each sorter decides the order only where the sorters before it consider two stories equal:
Output of
storybook indexfor four story files imported in the orderA/Zeta,B/Beta,A/Alpha,Intro:storySortsa-zeta b-beta a-alpha intro[{ order: ['Intro'] }]intro a-zeta b-beta a-alpha[{ order: ['Intro'] }, { method: 'alphabetical' }]intro a-alpha a-zeta b-betaA preview that still sets
storySortno longer affects the order.A sorter that returns nothing counts as a tie, as it does in
Array.prototype.sort.presets.applyappends the main config's array after the arrays of addons, so an addon's sorter outranks a plain array in main.A user who wants their own sorters first writes the function form,
storySorts: (existing = []) => [mine, ...existing].The API docs page for
storySortsstates this.The
story-sort-to-mainautomigration moves a statically readable preview value intostorySorts: [value], and the runner from #36462 reads, formats, and writes the files, so the fix only describes the edit:The move is all or nothing.
The runner visits main before preview and leaves the other files alone when a fix fails on main.
When it cannot move the value (a comparator function, an imported value, an existing
storySorts), both files stay untouched, and the failure message andautomigrations-summary.mdtell the user to move it by hand.Earlier versions of this PR also carried unrelated fixes.
The GitHub capitalization on the mobile About page moved to #36494, and the path-only URL fix in addon-links moved to #36495.
The ActionList toggle focus ring, the Show changes button state, the Next.js
_stream_*aliases, and the Vue 3 Vite preset re-exports are dropped: each reverted a deliberate change onnext.Checklist for Contributors
Testing
The changes in this PR are covered in the following automated tests:
Manual testing
yarn task sandbox --template react-vite/default-ts --start-from auto..storybook/main.ts, addstorySorts: [{ order: ['Example', ['Header', '*']] }].Example/Headerfirst.storySorts: [{ order: ['Configure your project'] }, { method: 'alphabetical' }]and restart.Confirm that the docs page comes first and the remaining entries are alphabetical.
storySortsfrom main and addparameters: { options: { storySort: { order: ['Example', ['Page', '*']] } } }to.storybook/preview.ts.Restart and confirm that the sidebar is in import order.
npx storybook automigrate story-sort-to-mainand accept.Confirm that
.storybook/main.tsnow hasstorySorts: [{ order: ['Example', ['Page', '*']] }]and that the preview no longer mentionsstorySort.storySorts: [{ order: ['Other'] }]to main as well, and run the command again.Confirm that the command reports that main already defines storySorts and that neither file changed.
