Hi @ethanstoner, Thanks a lot for this one - the Quick heads-up on process: we currently get a high volume of unreviewed AI-generated PRs, I'll take a look as soon as that is in! |

Here's the before and after. Storybook 10.5.10, with export default definePreview({
parameters: { options: { storySort: { order: ['General', 'Widgets', 'Alerts'] } } },
}).type<{ parameters: { customParam?: string } }>();The configured order is close to reverse alphabetical on purpose, so the difference is obvious rather than subtle. Before ( After (matches the configured order): Same viewport, same selected story, same expansion state in both. Only the group order changes. One thing I want to be straight about: I didn't build the monorepo for these. I applied this PR's unwrapping loop to the equivalent compiled code in the 10.5.10 release ( The non-visual measurements line up with it. On the unpatched release, calling |
Hi @ethanstoner, Thanks for the before/after - and for being straight that you patched the compiled 10.5.10 chunk rather than building the monorepo. That note is worth more to us than a cleaner-looking screenshot would have been, because it says exactly what the evidence does and does not cover. Together with the On to the review. The approach holds up: the fix is correct and it is in the right place. Two things before this can merge. 1. Share the factory-unwrapping loop instead of copying it. You wrote that the fix "reuses the same unwrapping loop as export function unwrapCsfFactoryConfig(node: t.Node | undefined): t.Node | undefined;and call it from both 2. Add the negative test for the boundary you drew on purpose. The new test covers the success path only. The loop deliberately bails out when the config is a local variable instead of an inline object. Please add a neighbouring case where a local Once those two land, this goes to our runtime verification stage and then to merge. Thanks for a genuinely well-documented PR - the pre-fix failing-test output in the description saved us real time. Reviewed at |

Review phase: Final verdict - architecture, thermo-nuclear code quality, and runtime verification completeWe are trying out something new: a three-stage automated review - architecture, then code quality, then runtime verification - that runs on a PR before a human maintainer looks at it closely. A maintainer still reads this and still makes the call; the aim is that by the time they do, the reachability and evidence work is already done. Tell us how it lands for you, that feedback is genuinely useful to us right now.
Hi @ethanstoner,
Thank you for the careful follow-through here. Extracting unwrapCsfFactoryConfig gives ConfigFile and getStorySortParameter one shared traversal, and the local-variable boundary test keeps the static parser from widening its contract by accident.
All three review stages pass at head 4c8141cde0760c224df830aa65d8e7345941ef4d:
- Architecture: the fix is in the correct
code/core/src/csf-toolslayer, uses the shared internal helper pattern, and preserves the existing diagnostics for unresolved expressions. - Code quality: the re-check found no remaining structural findings after the shared-helper revision. The independent adversarial panel was degraded to one Codex pass because the Claude tool server was unavailable; the completed pass found no issue.
- Runtime verification: the pre-fix behavior reproduced twice at base
8256cee6c95cf35dc8113cf179c9b7bea487f327, returningundefinedand logging the misleading unsupported-default message both times. At this PR head, the focused file passed 27/27 tests, the ConfigFile suite passed 126/126 tests, and an explicit probe returned{ order: ['General'] }with zerologger.logcalls.
This evidence covers the parser regression and both callers of the shared helper. It does not cover browser/sidebar rendering, the full repository, unrelated suites, other framework/builder combinations, or a later commit.
Approved from the contribution review pipeline. A human maintainer still makes the merge decision.
getStorySortParameter and ConfigFile each walked the factory call chain with their own copy of the same loop, so the two parsers agreed only by convention. Move it into unwrapCsfFactoryConfig and call it from both. Also add the negative case for the boundary the loop draws on purpose: a config passed as a variable is left unresolved rather than followed.

Rebased onto current The only conflict was in the Verified on the rebased tree:
Danger JS, which was red before, is green again on the rebased commit with no label changes — so that failure went away with the rebase. Nothing outstanding from my side; this just needs a review pass. |

Hi @ethanstoner, Thank you for taking care of this issue!. We have recently moved storySort to the |

What I did
getStorySortParameterdoes not recognise a preview that uses the.type<T>()chain, soparameters.options.storySortis silently dropped and the sidebar falls back to unsorted order. The
ExportDefaultDeclarationvisitor only looked atdefaultObj.arguments[0]. For the chained form the default declaration is the outer call (calleeis aMemberExpression, argumentsis empty), so neither the call branch nor the object branch matched and it fell through tounsupported('default', false). Two consequences:
getStorySortParameterreturnsundefined, soStoryIndexGeneratorpasses no comparator tosortStoriesand the configured order is ignored.Unexpected 'default'. Parameter 'options.storySort' should be defined inline e.g. …— which is misleading, because the parameter is inline. This is not an unsupported shape:
ConfigFile.tsalready unwraps exactly this chain (see the// csf factory - unwrap call expressions like definePreview({...}) or definePreview({...}).type<T>()loop, covered by "parses correctly with.type<T>()chaining on export default" inConfigFile.test.ts).getStorySortParameter.tswas left handling only the un-chaineddefinePreview({...})form added in #30443.The fix reuses the same unwrapping loop as
ConfigFile.tsso the two parsers agree, which also lets the redundant call/object branch collapse into one.Verification
On the unmodified tree, the new test case fails and the misleading message is emitted:
With the fix, the parameter is returned and
logger.logis not called. (The logger spy above was a scratch check, not part of the diff.)Checklist for Contributors
Testing
The changes in this PR are covered in the following automated tests:
Commands run locally (Windows, Node 22.22.3):
yarn vitest run --config code/core/vitest.config.ts src/csf-tools src/core-server/utils/StoryIndexGenerator→ 17 files, 541 passed, 3 skippedyarn nx check core→✅ No type errors in this packagecd code && yarn fmt:write, thenyarn lint:js:cmd core/src/csf-tools/getStorySortParameter.ts core/src/csf-tools/getStorySortParameter.test.ts→ no errors (4 pre-existingno-explicit-any/no-uncategorized-errorswarnings on untouched lines 18, 32, 41, 57)I have not run a sandbox or e2e for this; the change is confined to one pure parser function.
Manual testing
yarn task sandbox --start-from auto --template react-vite/default-ts.storybook/preview.tsto end the default export with a.type<T>()chain and add a story sort:yarn storybookand check the sidebar respects theorderarray, and that the terminal no longer printsUnexpected 'default'. Parameter 'options.storySort' should be defined inline.nextwithout this patch, the same preview file produces unsorted sidebar order plus that message.Documentation
