Description

Problem

model_gateway/src/service_discovery.rs had grown to 2547 lines holding four
separate responsibilities:

  1. Kubernetes client and reflector lifecycle
  2. Pod filtering and conversion to desired workers
  3. Diffing desired workers against Kubernetes-owned registry entries
  4. Submitting worker registration and removal jobs

(3) and (4) are already provider-neutral in substance, but nothing in the code
enforced that — reconcile_workers took a Store<Pod> directly, so the diff
logic could not be reached without a Kubernetes reflector.

Separately, mesh-router discovery was spawned from inside the worker
discovery task and read its selector off ServiceDiscoveryConfig. That
coupling means router-peer discovery cannot have its own lifetime, and would
block a file/Slurm/Consul worker provider from coexisting with
Kubernetes-discovered mesh peers.

This is the first of several PRs adding file/Slurm/Consul worker discovery
providers. It ships no new provider — it only establishes the boundary so the
later ones are additive.

Solution

Split both concerns along responsibility lines:

model_gateway/src/service_discovery/
├── mod.rs # public surface
├── kubernetes.rs   # client, reflector, Pod -> desired workers
├── reconciler.rs # ownership, registry diff, JobQueue submissions
└── testing.rs # shared test fixtures

model_gateway/src/mesh_discovery/
└── kubernetes.rs # router-peer watcher, own config and lifetime

reconciler::reconcile takes a desired-worker snapshot instead of a
Store<Pod>, so the module no longer names a Kubernetes type. Its ownership
model
is still Pod-UID based (smg.ai/pod-uid); generalizing that to a
(provider, id, spec-hash) triple is deliberately left to a follow-up so this
extraction stays behavior-preserving. The module doc says so explicitly.

Changes

Worker discovery

  • Split the single file into mod.rs / kubernetes.rs / reconciler.rs.
git tracks this as a rename of the original file to kubernetes.rs, so
blame survives for the bulk of it.
  • reconcile_workers(&Store<Pod>, &ServiceDiscoveryConfig, ...) becomes
    reconciler::reconcile(&DesiredState, &Arc<AppContext>, Instant). The caller
passes the start instant so the sync-duration metric still covers Pod
    conversion, exactly as before.
  • build_watcher_config loses its now-vestigial watcher_kind parameter —
after the split it is only ever called for the worker watcher.

Mesh-router discovery

  • New MeshDiscoveryConfig { namespace, router_selector, router_mesh_port_annotation }
with its own start_mesh_discovery and task.
  • PodInfo loses is_router and mesh_port; ServiceDiscoveryConfig loses
router_selector and router_mesh_port_annotation. The mesh module parses
the few Pod fields it needs itself rather than importing PodInfo, so the two
    modules share no types.
  • ServerConfig gains mesh_discovery_config: Option<MeshDiscoveryConfig>.

Server lifecycle

  • The two discoveries start independently; either can run without the other.
  • Each task is supervised by supervise_discovery, which logs an unexpected
exit or panic (and stays quiet on shutdown cancellation) while the server
holds its AbortHandle for cleanup. Previously the worker-discovery handle
was moved into a detached logging task and never cancelled, and the router
task needed a third task purely to report its panics.
  • start_mesh_discovery refuses a config with no router selector. Without a
selector the watcher would LIST/WATCH every Pod in scope — cluster-wide when
no namespace is set — and discard all of them. The old code got this guard
for free because the spawn site checked the selector; exporting the start
function makes the guard the function's own responsibility.

CI

  • e2e-kind-discovery.yml filtered on the literal path
model_gateway/src/service_discovery.rs. Left alone, the split would have
silently stopped triggering the kind lane on discovery changes. Now filters on
    service_discovery/** and mesh_discovery/**.

Breaking changes (Rust API)

smg is published to crates.io as the tier-4 crate, so these are real source
breaks for Rust consumers. Python, Go, the CLI, and serialized config are
unaffected.

Item Change Migration
service_discovery::ServiceDiscoveryConfig removed pub fields router_selector, router_mesh_port_annotation move them to mesh_discovery::MeshDiscoveryConfig
service_discovery::PodInfo removed pub fields is_router, mesh_port; ip is now std::net::IpAddr router state is no longer derived from worker Pod parsing; ip.to_string() for the old form
service_discovery::start_service_discovery 4 args → 2 (drops mesh_cluster_state, mesh_port) call mesh_discovery::start_mesh_discovery separately
service_discovery::start_service_discovery_with_client 5 args → 3 (test-util only) as above
server::ServerConfig new required field mesh_discovery_config None preserves previous behavior when no router selector is set

The field removals are the point of the change, not a side effect: keeping
is_router/mesh_port on PodInfo as dead fields would preserve exactly the
coupling this PR removes. A deprecated 4-arg start_service_discovery was
considered and rejected — it would have to either ignore its mesh arguments
(silently disabling router discovery for that caller) or start the mesh task
itself (reinstating the coupling). A compile error is the correct outcome.

Adding a field to ServerConfig follows existing precedent in this repo
(afce18bf added health_check_port, c01e9eaa added runtime_worker_threads).

Release note for maintainers: smg is on 1.10.1 and publishes as the
tier-4 crate, so under Cargo's SemVer guidance this cannot ship in a 1.x
bump. As far as I can tell this would be the repo's first breaking change —
git log --grep='!:' finds no prior one, and version bumps happen in dedicated
chore(release): bump versions for vX.Y.Z PRs rather than in feature PRs, so
this PR deliberately does not touch Cargo.toml. The version decision is
yours; flagging it so the release does not go out as 1.10.2.

Note that PodInfo is already breaking regardless of the ip type change,
since it loses two public fields — reverting ip to String would not restore
compatibility for that type, only move where the IPv6 parse happens.

Taking the break here rather than deferring is deliberate: the tagged provider
configuration turns this type into a provider union anyway, so preserving
source compatibility now would only mean breaking twice.

Review fixes (third commit)

Three of these are pre-existing bugs in code this PR moves. Fixing them here
rather than in a follow-up, since they were surfaced by review of the moved
code and each is a few lines plus a test.

  • IPv6 mesh peers were unreachable. format!("{}:{}", ip, port) rendered
fd00::1:7100. RouterPodInfo now holds a parsed IpAddr and formats via
SocketAddr, giving [fd00::1]:7100. An unparseable IP skips the Pod with a
warning instead of registering a peer at a malformed address.
  • Invalid mesh-port annotations were silent. An unparseable (or zero) value
fell back to the gateway's own mesh port with no log. It now warns with Pod
name, annotation key, and raw value first, matching how resolve_worker_ports
    reports a malformed worker-ports annotation.
  • Discovery tasks outlived a failed startup. Discovery starts before
build_app, address parsing, and TLS setup; dropping a bare AbortHandle
does not abort its task, so an error on any of those paths left watchers
running. A DiscoveryTasks guard now aborts on drop.
  • crates/rl/COUPLING.md pointed at src/service_discovery.rs for one of the
three #[cfg(test)] AppContext literals; updated to the new path.
  • The kind E2E path filter gains src/server.rs, where the start/skip gating
    for both discoveries now lives.

Four new tests cover the IPv6 address, the unparseable IP, and the invalid and
zero annotation cases.

CI fix

kind-discovery failed on test_misconfigured_deployment_falls_back_and_is_diagnosable.
Not a product bug: kubectl delete deployment --wait=true waits for the
Deployment object only, and its Pod is garbage collected asynchronously, so the
Pod can still be listed without a deletionTimestamp when the call returns. The
test snapshotted the fleet at that instant, folding the doomed typo Pod in at
four ports — a set the gateway can never produce, since that Pod only ever
contributed one worker under its invalid annotation. It now waits for the Pod to
leave the listing first.

The worker side carried the same IPv6 bug that was fixed for mesh peers:
format!("{}:{}", info.ip, port) yields fd00::1:8080, which becomes
DesiredWorker.url and then the registered worker URL, so every request to such
a worker targets an unparsable host. PodInfo::ip is now an IpAddr rendered
through SocketAddr. IPv4 output is byte-identical; only the IPv6 spelling
changes.

Deliberately not in this PR

This PR is behavior-preserving. Mesh-router discovery now has its own task,
config type, and lifetime, but its configuration still arrives inside
RouterConfig.discovery, which only --service-discovery populates — so
--router-selector on its own still does nothing, exactly as before. Giving it
its own config surface (CLI, serialized config, Helm, validation) belongs with
the tagged provider configuration, where the rest of that surface moves at once.
A test pins the current behavior so the change is deliberate when it lands.

Also deferred: provider-neutral ownership labels, desired-spec fingerprints,
duplicate-endpoint rejection, and scoped health recovery.

Stale router peers after a watcher relist. apply_router_event returns on
Event::Init/InitDone, so a router Pod deleted during a watch desync appears
in neither InitApply nor a Delete event and keeps its Alive status —
ClusterStatePeerList::alive_peers filters on exactly that, so mesh routing can
target a dead address until SWIM demotes it. Byte-identical on main
(service_discovery.rs apply_router_event), so pre-existing and not a
regression from this split.

Not fixed here: the fix is a genuine behavior change (new Down transitions)
requiring discovery-owned name tracking across the watch stream plus relist
tests, in a path whose only coverage today is the fake-API suite. That is the
opposite of what this PR is for. Worth noting the worker side does not have
this gap — its reflector Store plus level-triggered reconcile drops absent
Pods on relist by construction. The asymmetry is an argument for giving mesh
discovery the same snapshot treatment in a follow-up.

Test Plan

No production behavior change, so the existing suites are the parity gate.

  • cargo test -p smg --lib — 1783 passed. The 80 colocated discovery unit tests
moved with their functions and kept their assertions; 62 in kubernetes.rs,
    11 in reconciler.rs, 14 in mesh_discovery/kubernetes.rs (87 total, +7 new).
  • cargo test -p smg --features test-util --test k8s_discovery_test — 21
passed. All 12 fake-API journeys (watch reconnect, HTTP 410 relist, drain
    window, zombie/manual worker scoping, same-URL replacement, multi-port,
readiness transitions) are unmodified apart from dropping the two removed
    arguments from start_service_discovery_with_client.
  • cargo test -p smg --bins — 36 passed (+3 new CLI tests).
  • cargo check --workspace --all-targets — clean.
  • cargo clippy -p smg -p smg-external-router --no-default-features --features smg/grpc-client,smg/jemalloc-stats --all-targets -- -D warnings — clean.
  • cargo +nightly fmt --all -- --check — clean.

New tests:

  • mesh_router_discovery_runs_without_worker_discovery (fake-API) — replaces
router_discovery_updates_mesh_cluster_state. Drives the router watcher with
no worker discovery running, asserts Alive → Down transitions in the
mesh cluster state, and asserts the worker registry stays empty.
  • test_apply_router_event_ignores_non_router_pods,
    test_is_enabled_requires_a_selector,
    test_start_mesh_discovery_refuses_an_empty_selector (mesh unit).
  • router_selector_alone_does_not_yet_configure_mesh_discovery,
    mesh_discovery_is_absent_without_a_router_selector,
    service_discovery_router_selector_reaches_mesh_discovery (CLI).

The kind E2E lane (e2e-kind-discovery.yml) is the real-environment gate and
should be watched on this PR; the path filter fix above is what lets it trigger.

Checklist
  • cargo +nightly fmt passes
  • cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings passes (ran the CI feature
    profile: --no-default-features --features smg/grpc-client,smg/jemalloc-stats;
--all-features needs OpenCV/NIXL system libs not present locally — CI covers it)

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added Kubernetes-based discovery for mesh routers with namespace and label-selector filtering.
    • Mesh router health and availability now update automatically from Pod lifecycle and readiness.
    • Mesh ports support annotations, validation, and default fallback behavior.
    • Worker discovery now reconciles additions, removals, replacements, and retries more reliably.
  • Changes

    • Mesh-router discovery operates independently from worker service discovery.
    • Discovery services start, stop, and recover alongside the server.
    • Worker endpoints support IPv6 addresses, while Pods with invalid IPs are ignored.

Walkthrough

The change separates Kubernetes worker discovery from mesh-router discovery. Worker reconciliation moves to a shared module. Mesh discovery watches selected router Pods and updates mesh state. Server startup manages both discovery tasks independently.

Reconcile stale router nodes after watcher reinitialization.

kube::runtime::watcher::Event::InitDone completes a relist. A previously applied Pod that is absent from all InitApply events must be treated as deleted. apply_router_event returns for Init and InitDone, so the omitted Pod receives no Down transition.

SWIM may later demote an unreachable node, but ClusterStatePeerList continues to select it while its status is Alive. Mesh routing can therefore target the deleted address during the failure-detection window.

Track names seen in each initialization cycle in a separate discovery-owned set. At InitDone, mark only previously discovery-owned names absent from the relist as Down. Do not demote unrelated ClusterState entries.

Re: Reconcile stale router nodes after watcher reinitialization (flagged as outside-the-diff on mesh_discovery/kubernetes.rs:172) — confirmed real, and I am deliberately not fixing it here. Leaving this as a visible open item rather than burying it.

The finding is correct. apply_router_event returns on Event::Init/InitDone, so a router Pod deleted during a watch desync appears in neither InitApply nor a Delete event and keeps Alive. ClusterStatePeerList::alive_peers filters on exactly status == Alive (mesh/wiring.rs), so mesh routing can target a dead address until SWIM demotes it. The severity description is accurate.

It is pre-existing, not a regression from this split. The match arms are byte-identical on main (model_gateway/src/service_discovery.rs, apply_router_event). This PR moved the function; it did not change its event handling.

Why not here. The fix is a genuine behavior change — new Down transitions — requiring discovery-owned name tracking threaded across the watch stream, plus relist tests, in a path whose only coverage today is the fake-API suite. This PR is a behavior-preserving extraction, and it has already absorbed three pre-existing bug fixes under review pressure (IPv6 on both the mesh and worker sides, silent annotation fallbacks, unconditional task cancellation). Adding stateful relist reconciliation on top is where the scope line belongs.

Useful asymmetry for whoever picks this up: the worker side does not have this gap. Its reflector Store plus level-triggered reconcile drops absent Pods on relist by construction; mesh discovery is edge-triggered and applies each event straight to ClusterState. So the real fix is arguably not a name-tracking patch but giving mesh discovery the same snapshot treatment — which is the direction the discovery-provider design already takes for workers.

Recorded under "Deliberately not in this PR" in the description.

…covery

`service_discovery.rs` combined four responsibilities in one 2547-line file:
the Kubernetes client/reflector lifecycle, Pod-to-worker conversion, the
registry diff, and JobQueue submission. The last two are already
provider-neutral, but nothing enforced that, and mesh-router discovery was
spawned from inside the worker-discovery task so it could not have its own
lifetime.

Split along responsibility boundaries:

  service_discovery/
  ├── mod.rs # public surface
  ├── kubernetes.rs # client, reflector, Pod -> desired workers
  └── reconciler.rs # registry diff + JobQueue submissions

  mesh_discovery/
  └── kubernetes.rs # router-peer watcher, own config and lifetime

`reconciler::reconcile` now takes a desired-worker snapshot instead of a
`Store<Pod>`, so it no longer names a Kubernetes type. Its ownership model is
still Pod-UID based; generalizing that is left to a follow-up.

Mesh-router discovery gets `MeshDiscoveryConfig`, its own start function, and
its own task. `PodInfo` loses `is_router`/`mesh_port` and
`ServiceDiscoveryConfig` loses `router_selector`/`router_mesh_port_annotation`.
`start_mesh_discovery` refuses an empty selector rather than opening an
unfiltered, potentially cluster-wide Pod watch that could never match a router.

The server starts the two independently, supervises each for unexpected exit or
panic, and holds their abort handles for shutdown.

BREAKING CHANGE: `ServiceDiscoveryConfig` and `PodInfo` lose their mesh fields,
`start_service_discovery` drops its two mesh parameters, and `ServerConfig`
gains `mesh_discovery_config`. CLI, serialized config, and the Python and Go
bindings are unaffected.

Runtime behavior is unchanged. Mesh-router discovery keeps arriving through the
`discovery` config and so is still reachable only under `--service-discovery`;
moving it onto its own config surface lands with the tagged provider
configuration.

The filter named the old single file, so discovery changes would no longer
trigger the kind lane after the split. Add the mesh_discovery directory too:
its watcher is exercised by the same suite.

…cel on early exit

Review findings on the discovery split:

- `format!("{}:{}", ip, port)` produced `fd00::1:7100` for an IPv6 Pod IP,
which mesh clients cannot dial. `RouterPodInfo` now holds a parsed `IpAddr`
and renders through `SocketAddr`, so IPv6 comes out bracketed. An IP that
does not parse skips the Pod with a warning instead of registering a peer at
a malformed address. Pre-existing on main; carried in with the moved code.
- An unparseable or zero mesh-port annotation silently fell back to the
gateway's own mesh port. It now warns with the Pod name, annotation key, and
raw value first, matching how `resolve_worker_ports` reports a malformed
  worker-ports annotation.
- Discovery starts before `build_app`, address parsing, and TLS setup, so an
error on any of those paths left the watchers running: dropping a bare
`AbortHandle` does not abort its task. A `DiscoveryTasks` guard now aborts on
  drop, making cancellation unconditional.
- `crates/rl/COUPLING.md` named `src/service_discovery.rs` as one of the three
files carrying a `#[cfg(test)]` `AppContext` literal; it is now
  `src/service_discovery/testing.rs`.
- The kind E2E path filter gains `src/server.rs`, where the start/skip gating
  for both discoveries now lives.

…ardown

- `kind-discovery` failed on `test_misconfigured_deployment_falls_back_and_is
_diagnosable`. `kubectl delete deployment --wait=true` waits for the
Deployment object only; its Pod is garbage collected asynchronously and can
still be listed, without a deletionTimestamp, when the call returns. The test
snapshotted the fleet at that instant, folding the doomed typo Pod in at four
ports -- a set the gateway can never produce, since that Pod only ever
contributed one worker under its invalid annotation. Wait for the Pod to
  leave the listing before snapshotting.

- The worker side had the same IPv6 bug the previous commit fixed for mesh
  peers: `format!("{}:{}", info.ip, port)` yields `fd00::1:8080`, which becomes
`DesiredWorker.url` and then the registered worker URL, so every request to
such a worker targets an unparsable host. `PodInfo::ip` is now an `IpAddr`
rendered through `SocketAddr`, mirroring `RouterPodInfo`. IPv4 output is
byte-identical; only the IPv6 spelling changes. A Pod IP that does not parse
is skipped with a warning instead of registering a malformed URL.

- codespell: `unparseable` -> `unparsable`.

- `test_zero_mesh_port_annotation_is_rejected` carried a `#[traced_test]` it
never used; it now asserts the warning fires for `0` as well.

BREAKING CHANGE: `service_discovery::PodInfo::ip` changes from `String` to
`std::net::IpAddr`.

`from_pod` returning `None` makes the Pod vanish from the desired set, so the
warning is the only signal an operator gets for why a Ready, selector-matching
Pod never became a worker. Assert it fires, matching how the mesh annotation
tests and the kind E2E treat their log lines as contract.

`main` owns the CLI -> discovery-config conversion and the selector
parsing that decide whether either discovery runs at all, so a change
confined to it could alter discovery behaviour while skipping this
workflow: the path filter has no broader `model_gateway/**` entry.

`--mesh-port 0` parses cleanly as a socket address, so nothing rejected
it. The port is advertised to peers, which cannot dial an ephemeral
bind, and it is also the fallback router discovery applies to Pods whose
mesh-port annotation is missing or invalid, publishing `IP:0` peers into
the cluster state as Alive.

Reject it in `build_mesh_server_config`, beside the existing check for an
unspecified advertise IP: both are advertise addresses that parse but
cannot be reached. Fixing it here rather than in the discovery
entrypoints keeps one check on the path that feeds the mesh server and
discovery alike.

The bindings build `MeshServerConfig` independently of `main`, mirroring
it down to the unspecified-advertise-IP check, so the previous commit
left `mesh_port=0` accepted there. `router_args.py` exposes `mesh_port`,
and `startup` derives router discovery's fallback port from
`advertise_addr.port()` either way, so a Python-launched gateway still
advertised an undialable port and published `IP:0` peers as Alive.

Mirror the guard to keep the two conversion paths in parity, as the
unspecified-advertise check already is.

🔴 Important — Reject mesh port zero in the Python path.

When enable_mesh is true and mesh_port is 0, the Python path passes port 0 to both bind_addr and advertise_addr. The mesh server binds an ephemeral port but advertises port 0.

Mesh discovery then uses this zero value as its default mesh port. For a healthy router Pod without a valid port annotation, it inserts an Alive node with an address such as IP:0. Mesh receivers do not reject this address before it enters cluster state, so peers cannot dial the advertised endpoint.

Match the CLI validation before constructing either socket address.
