smg v1.10.0 changed how gateway admission behaves under sustained overload, and the rate-limiting docs still described the old behavior.

  • A permit is now held for the full response, including streaming bodies (fix(middleware): hold admission permits for the full response lifetime smg#2240).
  • The queue is a hard FIFO bound (#2265).
  • An unset --rate-limit-tokens-per-second means no refill (#2053). Before v1.10 it refilled at --max-concurrent-requests per second.
  • Sheds return 429 admission_queue_full or 503 admission_queue_timeout with Retry-After: 2, not 408 (#2247).
  • Engine 429s no longer trip circuit breakers (#2163).

Changes

  • concepts/reliability/rate-limiting.md (mechanics rewritten)
    • A "Behavior changed in v1.10" callout.
    • Which routes are gated.
    • Permit lifetime.
    • Queue semantics.
    • How the token bucket behaves with and without a refill rate.
    • What the legacy flags mean under the priority scheduler.
    • A "What the Client Sees" table with the exact codes, and how to tell these sheds apart from scheduler, overload-protection, tenant, and no_available_workers responses.
    • Admission metrics (smg_admission_*) and sizing guidance based on standing concurrency.
    • Removed an unsourced GPU sizing table, the stale 408 claims, and the removed mesh global rate-limit body.
  • concepts/reliability/circuit-breakers.md
    • New "What Counts as a Failure" section: 429 records no sample, the gRPC status mapping, gateway sheds never count, and 503 still counts by default.
    • Per-worker resilience overrides.
    • Corrected half-open: traffic is not throttled, and open→half-open is lazy.
    • Corrected what --disable-circuit-breaker actually does.
    • Metrics: added labels, smg_worker_cb_outcomes_total, and the -1 value after removal.
  • getting-started/reliability-controls.md: permit lifetime, the 429/503 codes, and the refill rate reframed as a pre-v1.10 compatibility option.
  • concepts/reliability/priority-scheduling.md and reference/priority-scheduler.md: the scheduler's queue timeout is 503 with Retry-After: 2, not 408, and queue-full carries Retry-After: 2.

Please check: this removes the embeds of rate-limiting.svg (it shows "408 Timeout" and a per-second refill) and circuit-breaker.svg (it shows half-open as "Limited Requests"). Both contradict current behavior. The files stay in static/, so restoring an embed is a one-line change.

Verification

  • Checked against smg v1.11.0 (3be823a7):
    • middleware/concurrency.rs, middleware/token_bucket.rs, middleware/scheduler/*
    • app_context.rs (bucket construction, compared with the pre-v1.10 source)
    • worker/circuit_breaker.rs, worker/resilience.rs, routers/grpc/utils/tonic_ext.rs
    • observability/metrics.rs, server.rs
  • pnpm lint, pnpm check (0 errors), and pnpm build pass.
  • The link check is clean except for concepts/reliability/overload-protection.md, which docs(reliability): document worker overload protection and load monitoring #37 adds.
  • All five pages render with status 200 under wrangler pages dev.

This is one of a series of docs PRs that bring the site up to smg v1.11.0, one per area.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Permits span the full response, the queue is a hard FIFO bound, and an unset
refill rate means no refill (smg-project/smg#2240, smg-project/smg#2265,
smg-project/smg#2053). Sheds are 429/503 with Retry-After: 2, including the
priority scheduler's (smg-project/smg#2247). Add admission metrics
(smg-project/smg#2197) and standing-concurrency sizing. Breakers ignore 429
capacity pushback (smg-project/smg#2163); fix half-open and metrics details.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified circuit-breaker behavior, including how worker responses affect circuit state and how to monitor breaker outcomes.
    • Updated overload-control guidance: full queues return 429, while queue timeouts return 503; both include Retry-After: 2.
    • Documented concurrency limits, FIFO queueing, token-refill behavior, and how to size limits for worker capacity.
    • Expanded scheduler guidance on rejection reasons, response headers, and request-rate checks.

Walkthrough

The reliability documentation updates describe circuit-breaker state and outcomes, gateway admission control, and priority-scheduler responses. They also revise configuration examples, monitoring guidance, and retry instructions.

A single successful request resets `consecutive_failures` to zero. `--cb-window-duration-secs` is accepted and validated but is not yet consumed by the state machine — failures are tracked via a running consecutive-failure counter rather than a sliding window.

<location>https://lightseek.org/smg/concepts/reliability/circuit-breakers</location>
<excerpt>Concepts · Shepherd Model Gateway # Circuit Breakers¶ Circuit breakers prevent cascade failures by stopping traffic to unhealthy workers. They&`#39`;re essential for maintaining system stability when workers fail. ### Automatic Isolation¶ Automatically isolate unhealthy workers to prevent cascade failures across your inference fleet. ### Fail Fast¶ Detect failing workers and stop sending traffic immediately—no wasted requests or timeout waits. ### Self-Healing¶ Automatically test recovery and restore traffic when workers become healthy again. ### Observable¶ Full Prometheus metrics for state transitions, failure counts, and recovery timing. ## Why Circuit Breakers?¶ Without circuit breakers, a failing worker can cause: 1. Wasted requests: Requests sent to failing workers timeout 2. Increased latency: Clients wait for timeouts before retry 3. Resource exhaustion: Connections pile up to dead workers 4. Cascade failures: Retry storms overwhelm remaining workers Circuit breakers fail fast—they detect failing workers and stop sending traffic immediately. ## How It Works¶ Each worker has its own circuit breaker with three states: ### ✓ Closed State¶ Normal operation - requests flow through. - Failures increment counter - Success resets counter to zero - Opens when failures ≥ threshold ### ✗ Open State¶ Circuit tripped - requests rejected immediately. - Worker isolated from pool - No traffic sent to worker - Transitions to half-open after timeout ### Half-Open State¶ Testing recovery - limited probe requests allowed. - Success → close circuit - Any failure → reopen circuit - Gradual traffic restoration ### Closed → Open¶ The circuit opens when: ```plaintext consecutive_failures >= failure_threshold ``` A single successful request resets `consecutive_failures` to zero. `--cb-window-duration-secs` is accepted and validated but is not yet consumed by the state machine — failures are tracked via a running consecutive-failure counter rather than a sliding window. ### Open → Half-Open¶ After the circuit has been open for `--cb-timeout-duration-secs`, it transitions to half-open to test if the worker has recovered. ### Half-Open → Closed¶ If `--cb-success-threshold` consecutive requests succeed, the circuit closes and normal operation resumes. ### Half-Open → Open¶ If any request fails during half-open, the circuit immediately reopens. ## Configuration¶ ```bash smg \ --worker-urls http://w1:8000 http://w2:8000 \ --cb-failure-threshold 5 \ --cb-success-threshold 2 \ --cb-timeout-duration-secs 30 \ --cb-window-duration-secs 60 ``` ### Parameters¶ | Parameter | Default | Description | | --- | --- | --- | | `--cb-failure-threshold` | `10` | Consecutive failures before circuit opens | | `--cb-success-threshold` | `3` | Successes in half-open state to close circuit | | `--cb-timeout-duration-secs` | `60` | Seconds before open circuit transitions to half-open | | `--cb-window-duration-secs` | `120` | Accepted and validated (must be `> 0`) but not yet consumed by the state machine; see note under Closed → Open | | `--disable-circuit-breaker` | `false` | Disable circuit breakers entirely | #### Fast Circuit Opening¶ Sensitive to failures—isolate workers quickly. ```bash smg \ --cb-failure-threshold 3 \ --cb-timeout-duration-secs 30 ``` Use when: Critical availability, latency-sensitive applications #### Tolerant Configuration¶ Allow occasional failures before tripping. ```bash smg \ --cb-failure-threshold 20 \ --cb-success-threshold 5 \ --cb-timeout-duration-secs 120 ``` Use when: Flaky workers, network instability, batch processing ### Tuning Guidelines¶ | Scenario | Recommendation | | --- | --- | | Flaky workers | Higher `failure_threshold`, shorter `timeout` | | Critical availability | Lower `failure_threshold`, longer `timeout` | | Fast recovery workers | Lower `timeout`, lower `success_threshold` | | Slow recovery workers | Higher `timeout`, higher `success_threshold` | ### Normal Operation¶ ### Worker Fails¶ ### Recovery¶ ### M…[truncated]</excerpt>

Correct the configuration reference for --cb-window-duration-secs.

SMG v1.11.0 validates and stores this option, but the breaker state machine uses consecutive failures and never reads the window. The current sliding-window description can cause operators to tune a setting that has no effect.

Suggested fix
-| `--cb-window-duration-secs` | Sliding window for tracking failures | `120` |
+| `--cb-window-duration-secs` | Accepted and validated, but not consumed by the state machine; failures are tracked consecutively | `120` |

In `@src/lib/content/concepts/reliability/circuit-breakers.md` at line 120, Update
the `--cb-window-duration-secs` configuration reference to state that the option
is accepted and validated but not used by the state machine, which tracks
consecutive failures. Keep its default value unchanged.

| `--max-concurrent-requests` | `-1` (disabled) | Maximum requests holding a permit at once. A permit lasts for the full response, streaming included. Any value `<= 0` turns admission control off. |
| `--queue-size` | `100` | Maximum requests waiting for a permit. `0` disables the queue. |
| `--queue-timeout-secs` | `60` | Longest time a request waits in the queue before it is shed with 503. Must be `> 0` when `--queue-size` is above `0`. |
| `--rate-limit-tokens-per-second` | unset (no refill) | Tokens added to the bucket per second. Unset or `0` means no refill, so `--max-concurrent-requests` alone bounds requests in flight. Must be `>= 0`. |

Align the documented refill default.

The two pages document different defaults. rate-limiting.md says unset means no refill, while configuration.md says the default matches max-concurrent-requests. Use the v1.11.0 flag default consistently in both pages.

- smg_scheduler_queue_wait_seconds is exported as a summary (no bucket
  matcher applies), not a histogram.
- Use `smg launch` in every example. The Disabled example needs
  `--max-concurrent-requests=-1`: clap rejects a separate `-1`.
- The --priority-scheduler-* flags exist only on the Rust binary; the
Python launcher and the container entrypoint reject them, and there is
  no config file for them.
- A client disconnect frees a queue slot at once only for small bodies;
an unread larger HTTP/1.1 body hides it until admission or timeout.
- A WASM OnRequest module reads the body before admission.
- Overload sheds and no_available_workers have more causes than the
  table listed.
- External provider workers answer service_unavailable when every
breaker is open, and only local-worker retries re-run selection.
- Admission control turns on only for --max-concurrent-requests above 0.

The scheduler's cancel token is not tied to the client connection. A
disconnect the server notices drops the admit future, but the waiter
stays in the class queue (counting toward its depth) until the
dispatcher pops it and skips the closed sender; an unnoticed disconnect
leaves the request queued until admission or timeout.
