smg v1.10.0 added absolute per-worker overload vetoes and made load monitoring default-on (smg-project/smg#2220, #2233). v1.11.0 gave overload sheds their own error code (#2417) and started serving /loads from the load monitor's cached snapshot (#2418). None of this was documented. The Cache Management reference also still described the pre-1.10 get_loads fan-out, and it said gRPC workers are skipped on cache flush.

Changes

  • New concept page, concepts/reliability/overload-protection.md:
    • How the veto differs from admission control, cache-aware de-ranking, and the least_load waiting cap.
    • The two signals, and where each backend's load report comes from (/loads and /v1/loads, the /metrics fallback, gRPC GetLoads, ZMQ piggybacked load).
    • Polling and fail-open behavior.
    • Gateway flags with their validation rules, and per-worker overload blocks.
    • The exact 503 worker_overload_protection_shed response, with Retry-After and X-SMG-Error-Code.
    • The default-on load monitor, the gRPC PD decode admission window, metrics, and tuning.
  • Admin API, Cache Management:
    • Flush Cache now lists per-backend support, including vLLM over gRPC (#2554) and skipped ZMQ workers, with the real response fields.
    • Get Loads documents the public GET /loads, the deprecated /get_loads alias, the v1.11 response schema, and the breaking change from the old workers[] shape.
  • Extension API, Cache and Load Utilities: adds /loads and the auth tier of each route.
  • Nav and indexes:
    • Adds the page after Priority Scheduling.
    • The concepts index's Reliability list now covers all eight reliability pages.
    • reliability/index.md gets the frontmatter it was missing.

Verification

  • Each flag, default, message, header, metric, and route was checked against smg v1.11.0 (3be823a7), mainly main.rs, worker/monitor.rs, worker/overload.rs, routers/common/overload.rs, routers/common/pd_admission.rs, crates/external_router/src/error.rs, server.rs, and crates/protocols/src/worker.rs.
  • pnpm lint, pnpm check (0 errors; the pre-existing HeroMark warning remains), and pnpm build pass.
  • The link and anchor check is clean except configuration.md#worker-overload-protection and #load-monitoring-configuration. The configuration-reference PR in this series adds those anchors.
  • wrangler pages dev renders all five changed pages with status 200, admonitions, card grids, and tables intact, plus the new nav entry.

This is part of a series of docs PRs that bring the site up to smg v1.11.0, one per area.

…oring

Add a concept page for absolute per-worker overload vetoes: signals, flags,
per-worker overload blocks, the 503 worker_overload_protection_shed response,
default-on load monitoring and the gRPC PD decode admission window
(smg-project/smg#2220, #2233, #2417, #2466). Update Cache Management and the
extension route table for the cached GET /loads snapshot and gRPC cache flush,
including vLLM (smg-project/smg#2418, #2554).

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added a Reliability guide to overload protection, covering worker saturation, request shedding, configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
    • Updated the Reliability navigation and overview to include overload protection and clarify gateway rate limiting.
    • Expanded cache-flushing guidance with worker outcomes, parallel requests, transport limitations, and response codes.
    • Clarified that GET /loads provides a public, optionally filtered snapshot of per-worker and fleet engine loads; /get_loads remains a deprecated alias.
    • Documented that /flush_cache and /get_loads are control-plane routes.

Walkthrough

The Reliability concept pages now cover overload protection. The API reference documents cache flushing and the cached fleet-load endpoint, including its response schema and deprecated alias.

Two overload-guide explanations remain misleading. Clarify the mean-threshold example and when a veto can clear; these documentation issues do not appear to block the documented API workflows.

In `@src/lib/content/concepts/reliability/overload-protection.md`:
- Line 89: Clarify the mean-threshold description in the overload criteria: a
worker is vetoed when its mean token usage reaches or exceeds the threshold,
even if individual DP ranks have headroom; do not describe individual ranks as
being tested independently. Reference the --balance-token-usage-threshold
signal.
- Line 108: Update the overload-verdict explanation to distinguish report-driven
changes from other ways the stored veto can be cleared: a new report changes the
report-based verdict, while leaving Ready, worker removal, or rebuilding monitor
state can clear the veto without a new report.
- Line 207: Update the Retry-After guarantee near the overload-protection
discussion to clarify that a worker group's veto may remain active until its
next poll when load_monitor_interval_secs sets a longer effective interval;
advise clients to wait at least the advertised value and possibly longer.

Worker registration builds each worker with BasicWorkerBuilder::new and never
copies load_monitor_interval_secs from the submitted spec, so the monitor's
per-group override never sees it in v1.11.0 (create_worker.rs).

- Use `smg launch` in every example; the pip CLI needs a subcommand.
- Describe the token-usage veto as a mean across DP ranks, not a
  per-rank test.
- Only a poll sets the veto. Polls, leaving Ready, removal, replacement
(PUT or PATCH), and a monitor rebuild clear it. Align the Retry-After
and dispatch re-check wording with that.
- Validation note: only 0 vetoes every worker; values above 1.0 are
  rejected but never veto.
- Note that the Python launchers do not accept --engine-metrics.
- Alert summary: the shed counter also counts dispatch and pd_admission
  sheds.
- Flush Cache: only HTTP and gRPC workers are called (ZMQ is skipped),
and an HTTP failure names the /flush_cache endpoint URL.
