Problem

A Claude Code CLI conversation should be able to continue in T3 with its full message, tool, reasoning and subagent history. Importing a transcript while the CLI still owns the conversation does not safely transfer control.

Change

Add t3 thread attach SESSION --project PROJECT and t3 thread handoff THREAD_ID, backed by one service exposed through the existing MCP toolkit.

  • If the source CLI is running, ask whether to wait for it and its agents to exit or interrupt them. Waiting is the default; unattended callers must select a policy when the source is running. Ctrl+C cancels waiting without stopping the source.
  • On Linux, explicit interruption verifies the source PID/start identity and owned descendants before stopping them. Other platforms support waiting for the source to exit.
  • Once the source stops, import complete root and child records, keep imported history before subsequent managed runs, and resume the exact native Claude transcript through the existing adapter.
  • After interruption, commit one continuation effect with the completed handoff. The existing outbox and effect worker deliver T3's interrupted-work prompt with retries and command deduplication.
  • Preserve old subagents as history. Their processes are not restored; resumed work must inspect and restart unfinished tasks. New work uses T3's normal streaming, approvals and agent controls.

The contracts, CLI/MCP handlers, import service, persistence guards, ordering and adapter changes all support this transfer. Import cursors use the existing runtime repository; process verification reuses the ACP implementation through a shared module. The user guide explains the commands and platform limits.

This is a Claude-only handoff. It does not provide simultaneous CLI/T3 control, live-follow while waiting, or attachment for other providers. It introduces no database migrations, updater changes or web/mobile controls.

Scope and approval

Prior maintainer approval has not been obtained. This PR is submitted for consideration with that requirement outstanding.

CONTRIBUTING.md requires explicit maintainer approval of feature direction and scope, including draft PRs. This adds a workflow and does not qualify as a small bug fix or configuration-only exception. The author's authorization to submit this PR does not supply maintainer approval.

Maintainer guidance on an earlier teleport proposal calls for a smaller product decision and staged implementation. That comment is context, not approval of this proposal. The proposed scope here is one-way Claude handoff; shared control and other providers are excluded.

Related requests include continuing a terminal conversation in T3 and continuing Claude Code threads. The full research index below is background, not a claim that this PR resolves every linked report.

Verification

The original verification below applies to 90b5d7d948b48567463a86fd04945aa9185a96b0, based on upstream cefb544af3c9. The current head is 7adb470f02b4cde3384596850eabf153df41d69d.

An official-update compatibility defect was found in a previously deployed build: timestamp-sized imported positions sorted after newly allocated native run positions. The importer now uses T3's unchanged position allocator. The handoff regression asserts imported items occupy the normal history range. vp run check:changed HEAD --concurrency 2 passed before this fix was committed: formatting, lint, both Knip passes, GraphQL generation, typechecks for three packages, and four tests across three files. Existing histories written by the experimental builds require a separate data repair; changing the importer does not repair those stored positions.

The recorded local run of vp run check:changed HEAD --concurrency 2 before committing passed formatting, lint, both Knip passes, dependency-patch validation, GraphQL generation, typechecks for 40 affected packages, and 630 tests across 16 files. Its saved output was checked again during this description audit; tests were not rerun for this metadata-only update.

Focused coverage and observed results:

  • CLI wait/interrupt selection and cancellation; blocked handoff leaves the source running. An isolated real Linux parent/child fixture verifies that interruption stops only the verified owned process tree.
  • Complete import of large 26 MiB records; partial UTF-8, replaced files and symlink escapes; preservation of human text, tool/reasoning records, child lineage and settled statuses.
  • Cursor retries retain model and workspace metadata. The existing adapter test resumes the exact transcript even when its original checkout directory has been deleted.
  • Forced outbox insertion failure rolls back handoff completion. Recovery reclaims an abandoned continuation; draining the effect worker twice sends one continuation. Retried handoff preserves an already-managed runtime, including after history compaction.
  • New imports use the existing no-run history range, and subsequent managed runs use the normal run ranges. No custom ordering behavior is required in later official releases.

A read-only merge simulation against upstream 3d369d5596 completed without conflicts, and git diff --check passed. This does not replace validation after updating the branch.

Not verified: an end-to-end CLI-to-T3 run of this optimized head on either Linux or Windows. The deployed machines still use the earlier build, so their behavior is not evidence for this head. The MCP model-evaluation case is present but has not been run. No GitHub CI or paid model evaluation was started for this audit. No web/mobile UI code changes, screenshots or recordings are included.

Implemented with GPT-6 Astra through the Codex harness in T3 Code. Architectural review by Opus 5.5 through Claude Code.

When ClaudeAttachmentSource.interrupt passes a verified source in the T3 process's session, this check skips that PID on every TERM/KILL pass, so the source survives and the residual check fails the handoff. Since this helper signals individual verified PIDs, session equality alone should not exclude external CLI roots; limit the exclusion to detached ACP descendants or otherwise exempt the verified attachment owner.

When an imported nested agent is reparented, its subagent and node records remain owned by their old item.threadId, so getThreadRecords(parent.id, ...) omits them and the new parent’s history is missing the agent’s activity. This block changes parentNodeId but keeps both event ownership and payload threadId unchanged; set both to parent.id when emitting the updates.

After a handoff is complete, attaching the same session from another project or Claude instance returns the original threadId as success without checking ownership, directing the caller to a conversation outside the selected project. The handoffCompleted(threadId) fast path returns before the project/provider checks below; load the existing thread and validate its projectId and providerInstanceId before returning.

When an assistant record has interleaved content blocks, the imported turn-item.updated events put all text before the reasoning and tool items, so the reconstructed chronology is wrong—for example, text after a tool call appears before it. rawText is emitted before the content-block loop, and projectLines preserves that order when writing events; emit text and other items in their original block sequence instead.

Imported internal records display only a generic label, so peer-agent results and context summaries are unreadable in history and the item inspector. This branch sets system_notice.message to internalTitle, while those views read item.message; keep the original text in message and use internalTitle only for title.

Walkthrough

The changes add Claude session attachment and handoff through the CLI and MCP toolkit. The service discovers and imports transcript history, records handoff state, and can interrupt a verified Linux process tree. Orchestration persistence supports event deduplication and replayable continuation effects. Claude resume can use a stored transcript path.

Changes: Claude Session Handoff

Layer / File(s) Summary
Attachment contracts and entry points
packages/contracts/src/agentSessions.ts, apps/server/src/cli/thread.ts, apps/server/src/cli/thread.test.ts, apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/project/*, docs/user/outside-agents.md, evals/mcp-tool-use/cases/session-handoff.ndjson, apps/server/src/provider/agentContextBudget.json
Adds attachment and handoff input and result schemas, CLI subcommands, and the t3_thread_attach MCP tool. The CLI supports wait and interrupt choices. Documentation and the eval case describe the handoff flow. thread send --wait waits only when the send result has a runId.
Session discovery and process control

Adds shared POSIX process ownership and termination support, re-exports it from the ACP runtime, and adds Claude session discovery, transcript access, live-owner checks, and Linux interruption.
Transcript projection and event persistence
apps/server/src/project/claudeAttachmentProjection.ts, apps/server/src/project/claudeAttachmentProjection.test.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/EventSink.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/EventStore.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionStore.ts, apps/server/src/persistence/OrchestrationEventStore.ts, apps/server/src/persistence/OrchestrationEventStore.test.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/FoundationPersistence.test.ts
Projects Claude transcript records into orchestration events. Adds event lookup by ID, optional duplicate-event filtering and expected-thread checks, turn-item ID filtering, and related persistence tests.
Attachment state and runtime wiring
apps/server/src/project/ClaudeSessionAttachment.ts, apps/server/src/project/ClaudeSessionHandoff.test.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/runtimeLayer.ts
Adds the service that creates or reuses threads, imports root and child transcripts, and records handoff completion. The production runtime provides the service dependencies.
Continuation and imported-session resume
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/EffectOutbox.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/EffectWorker.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/RestartContinuation.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts, apps/server/src/provider/Drivers/ClaudeTranscript.ts, packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.ts
Adds a replay-safe handoff continuation effect and its worker behavior. Claude resume uses the stored transcript path when present, and transcript discovery returns matching transcript paths.

Explanation

The title "feat(threads): hand off Claude CLI conversations to T3" matches the main change in the changeset. The diff adds t3 thread attach and t3 thread handoff commands, a t3_thread_attach MCP tool, and a ClaudeSessionAttachment service that imports Claude CLI transcripts into T3 threads and resumes them. It is a short, single-sentence, conventional-commit title that a teammate scanning history can understand.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections, and each contains substantive content. The Problem section states the need and the Change section explains the attach/handoff commands, the wait/interrupt policy, the Linux-only interruption limit, and the import and continuation flow. The Scope section states that prior maintainer approval has not been obtained, which the template requires. The Verification section gives specific commands, test counts, and what was not verified. Minor gaps: the Verification section mixes results from an earlier head with the current head, and the long research index adds bulk. These do not leave any required section missing or empty.

message returns this.cause.message for source errors. For handoff-blocked, it returns the raw cause string or cause.message. The MCP handler sends error.message to agents, so this text becomes a transport-visible message that comes from cause. Add a bounded attribute, for example a blockedReason literal such as "transcript-changed" or "workspace-unknown". Then map each value to a fixed message. Translate source errors by their reason and operation, not by forwarding the message of the wrapped error.

Treat EPERM from process.kill(pid, 0) as a live process.

liveOwners rethrows every errno except ESRCH. Suppose a stale registry file in sessions/ names a PID that the OS reused for a process owned by another user. Then process.kill throws EPERM, and liveOwners throws for every caller. As a result, discover fails for all sessions, including unrelated ones, until someone deletes the stale file. EPERM means the process exists. Count the process as live and let the Linux identity check decide. This keeps the check fail-closed without breaking discover.

Interruption on Linux verifies the source process identity, stops its process tree,
and imports the final complete history. T3 then sends its normal interrupted-turn
continuation message: resume work, checking whether previous actions completed or
are still running before repeating them. This continuation survives a T3 restart
through the existing durable effect queue, with bounded retries and a deduplicated
message command. Automatic interruption requires Linux; on other
platforms, exit the source CLI and use `--wait`.

Remove implementation details from the user documentation.

This paragraph describes internal mechanics: "process tree", "durable effect queue", "bounded retries", and "deduplicated message command". Users do not need these terms to decide between --wait and --interrupt. Keep only what a user can act on. Interruption is Linux-only. It stops the source CLI and its agents. T3 then sends a resume message, and that message still arrives if T3 restarts.

Simplify the interruption guidance in the documentation paragraph to
user-actionable behavior, removing internal mechanics such as process identity
checks, queues, retry limits, and deduplication. State that `--interrupt` stops
the source CLI and its agents, imports complete history, asks the agent to
resume while checking prior actions, and that the request still arrives after a
T3 restart; retain the Linux-only limitation and `--wait` alternative for other
platforms.

Name the case source and add a control case.

This case has an id, but it does not name a source PR, issue, or thread. Add a source field, for example this PR. The cohort also has no control case. A control case would check that ordinary work does not cause a t3_thread_attach call, or that the agent does not send interrupt: true without explicit user authorization. A control case catches a description change that overcorrects. The PR description also says this eval was not run, but this PR changes the model-facing t3_thread_attach description. Run the eval and confirm that the case fails on the old text and passes on the new text.

As per coding guidelines: "Each case has an id, says where it came from (a PR, issue, or thread)", "Add controls: cases where the correct action is ordinary work", and "Before you change that text, read evals/README.md and run the evals it names."

P1 Badge Resolve native ownership before stopping the source

If a live Claude session was already imported by AgentSessionImporter, its native reference is owned by the existing import:... thread. An interrupt: true handoff stops the source here and only afterward calls create, whose unlessNativeThreadOwned guard rejects the different claude-attached-... thread. The transfer therefore fails after the user's CLI and agents have already been terminated, without enqueueing the continuation. Check or reserve native ownership before sending any signal, or adopt the existing owner.

P1 Badge Gate provider execution until the handoff commits

If the original CLI is resumed while backfill is running, the final assertStopped rejects the transfer, but this earlier write has already persisted and published a normal thread with an active provider binding. These writes are not rolled back, and the ordinary message.dispatch path has no handoff-complete check, so the rejected thread remains usable and can resume the same native conversation while the source still owns it. Keep partial imports non-runnable and enable the binding only with the final handoff commit.

P1 Badge Run the required MCP tool-use eval for the new descriptor

This introduces a model-facing MCP description and schema for a destructive, two-step transfer API, but the commit's verification notes explicitly state that the MCP model-evaluation case has not been run. The handler and CLI unit tests do not validate a model's tool choices. AGENTS.md requires running the named evals when MCP descriptions or schemas change; run the MCP tool-use evaluation, including external-claude-explicit-handoff, before shipping this descriptor.

P2 Badge Exclude synthetic notices from imported model selection

For a transcript whose last assistant record is a Claude local/API-error notice with message.model === "<synthetic>", this returns the sentinel as a real model. The import then overwrites the last genuine model in the cursor and thread.modelSelection; the handoff continuation uses that selection, and resolveClaudeCatalogApiModelId passes unknown IDs through, so the resumed request uses model: "<synthetic>" and fails. Apply the same sentinel exclusion already used by AgentSessionScanner's foldClaudeFields.

P2 Badge Regenerate cleanup IDs after importing new activity

If the source restarts during import, the idle-cleanup events can commit before the final assertStopped fails. When a retry imports additional unfinished child activity, that activity sets the subagent back to running, but this cleanup ID is identical to the one committed by the failed attempt, so skipExistingEventIds discards the new idle update. A subsequent successful handoff therefore leaves imported agents marked running even though their processes have exited. Key cleanup events to the imported cursor or activity generation; the node cleanup has the same issue.

Run the final stopped check before writing idle activity.

The idle events commit before the final source.assertStopped(...) call. If the source becomes live during import, the stopped check can fail after those events commit. T3 can then show an imported node or subagent as idle while Claude is still running.

Move the stopped check before the idle-status write.
