fix(server): import long Claude sessions that are mostly tool records - #19161
Conversation
ApprovabilityVerdict: Would Approve Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a localized server bug fix that lets oversized Claude and Codex transcripts import within the existing memory bound, with focused coverage for both sources and no schema, deployment, security, billing, or default changes. An unresolved Medium finding notes that later Claude title records may be evicted, so title preservation remains a blocking correctness risk. Not approved because:

Review comments at @apps/server/src/project/AgentSessionScanner.ts:
- Line 524: Update both assistant-classification branches in the record
classifier to return “assistant” only when extracting the corresponding
assistant content yields nonempty text; otherwise return null. This ensures
empty or tool-only records do not mark openingComplete before a visible
assistant reply.
- Line 895: Update the record-retention logic around `MutableList.append` so the
first record containing cwd metadata is preserved outside the evictable `recent`
window, even when it follows the opening reply. Ensure `prepareRecentThreads`
can still find that cwd after later history exceeds the budget, while leaving
ordinary recent-record eviction unchanged.
- Around line 894-895: Update the recent-record selection in AgentSessionScanner
so Claude sidechain, meta, and compact-summary user or assistant records ignored
by the message parser do not consume the recent-message budget or evict visible
history. Filter them before appending to recent, while preserving any metadata
the import needs through a separate path.
- Around line 874-880: Update the history-budget handling in `reserve` so an
oversized record after the opening is discarded and scanning continues to
subsequent records, rather than throwing after evicting `recent`. Reject the
transcript only when the opening itself cannot fit; preserve the existing limit
behavior for that case.

The importer retained every Claude record that carried a cwd or a session ID, which is nearly all of them, and rejected the whole transcript once those records passed the 32 MiB history budget. Keep only the messages. The fields where the newest record wins (session ID, title, model) are folded as records stream past, and the scanner takes the transcript's cwd from the reader, so imported threads are unchanged.

Taking over this one as maintainer for batch claude-11. I will preserve the original commits, integrate main, reduce the tests, and rebuild selective transcript retention while checking metadata and workspace matching. Thanks @Mikerpen22 for the reproduction and real-transcript comparison. |

Thanks @juliusmarminge for taking this over and rebuilding the retention, much appreciated. Happy to re-test against my long transcripts if useful. |

Long Claude sessions can be skipped during import because tool-only, attachment, and hidden records exhaust the 32 MiB selected-history budget, even when their visible conversation fits. Retain only visible Claude user/assistant records and fold the latest nonhidden session ID, title, and model separately. Capture the first cwd before filtering so workspace matching still works when the cwd comes from a discarded record. Codex retention and the existing import limits remain unchanged.
Maintainer takeover of @Mikerpen22’s #19161, preserving the contributor’s commits and merging main. Reduced four added tests to two (211 → 123 added test lines), combining metadata and cwd preservation into the long tool-history regression. Removed duplicate text construction during retention and kept the existing Codex retention rules.
Verification on headless Linux:
Against main’s production scanner: 82 existing tests pass and both new regressions fail because the transcript is skipped. Against the rebuilt scanner: all 84 pass. The cases use the real budget, 20,000 tool-result records, and 21 one-MiB hidden records; they also verify metadata precedence, hidden metadata exclusion, first-cwd precedence, and visible message order.
All 97 focused scanner, JSON-reader, and importer tests pass. Scoped lint/formatting and server typecheck pass; the typecheck reports 154 existing Effect suggestions.
A standalone headless run connects the real scanner and importer to isolated filesystem data, a captured event sink, and an in-memory runtime repository. A 20,005-record synthetic Claude transcript imports one thread with its visible messages, title, model, and native resume binding:
{"importedCount":1,"skippedCount":0,"messages":["First visible prompt","Visible final answer"],"eventCount":6,"resumeBound":true}This keeps the existing 32 MiB selected-history and shared 100,000-record limits. A single record can still exceed the remaining selected allocation while decoding, including an ultimately discarded record, and reject the transcript. Visible history exceeding the budget is still rejected; this does not add a rolling window.
No UI layout, contract, or transport changes. The headless proof captures emitted events rather than persisting them to a real database. Web/desktop import UI, macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, and packaged Electron were not verified. The original author’s private-transcript and fuzz comparisons were not rerun.
