perf(shared): skip printable spans in command output scanning - #28924
Command-output normalization checks every UTF-16 code unit in JavaScript, even when almost all of a provider chunk is printable text. CPU profiles put most of the bulk-output fold in that scan. No open PR improving this scanner was found in the 2,401-PR catalog and targeted diff checks; #27496, #21542 and #24042 change independent terminal correctness/style behavior.
Solution
Use a reusable control-character search to jump over printable spans, then keep the existing escape/cursor/write logic. Reset the scan position per synchronous feed and advance it past consumed escape payloads. Tabs, Unicode, pending escapes, hidden payloads and reconnect state retain the same behavior.
For 500 generated JSON records captured as 34 actual OS-pipe chunks (2.09 MB), the final implementation takes 4.585 → 1.911 ms (2.40× throughput) for server-shaped normalization plus full final-tail SHA-256 consumption. A second run measured 4.030 → 1.599 ms (2.52×). Each run uses 11 alternating-order batches of 5 operations. Sampled V8 allocation is effectively unchanged: approximately 5.00 MB per replay, with a 0.1–0.2% difference inside sampling noise. This is a generated bulk-output workload, not recorded user traffic, whole-app speed, or a gain for every chunk size. Short-log control throughput is unchanged.
Performance measurements use a local-only harness comparing actual baseline/current exports with intermediate-state/resume equivalence, consumed output, and CPU/GC-inclusive allocation profiles. Benchmark code and artifacts are deliberately not part of this PR.
Tests were extended before production code. Shared terminal + server CommandOutputHub + client command-output checks: 27 passed. The recorded Codex command_output_streaming integration: 1 passed. vp run check:changed and three independent Codex reviews are clean. No visible UI or protocol changes.
Built with GPT-6.1 Sol in the Codex harness through T3 Code.

Walkthrough
Terminal.feed now locates control characters with a global regular expression. Tests cover control and escape handling. A new script checks equivalence with a baseline implementation and measures performance.

Summary
Control scanning and coverage packages/shared/src/terminalOutput.ts, packages/shared/src/terminalOutput.test.ts
Terminal.feed uses a global regular expression to locate control characters and skips consumed escape sequences. Tests cover pending escapes, control filtering, interleaved feeds, and escape payload suppression.
Benchmark inputs and equivalence checks scripts/bench-terminal-output.mjs, knip.jsonc
The benchmark loads baseline and current implementations, prepares fixture or pipe-capture scenarios, and compares output states and resume text. The scripts workspace lists the benchmark script as an entry.
Benchmark measurement and reporting scripts/bench-terminal-output.mjs
Outside verification-only mode, the script measures timing, heap allocations, and CPU profiles, then writes scenario results and cleans up temporary resources.

No-argument benchmark results can be misleading. Require a distinct baseline or reject identical sources before relying on those results; this does not block the terminal-output change itself.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The change optimizes command-output scanning and adds a local benchmark. Registering the benchmark as a Knip entry suppresses unused-file reporting for that script, requiring human review of the configuration exception.

The Macroscope approvability note above describes the earlier ee9ed76 commit. In 9ad75f1, I removed the local benchmark and restored knip.jsonc exactly to the pinned base, as requested. The current PR diff contains only packages/shared/src/terminalOutput.ts and its prewritten tests; there is no Knip exception or benchmark to approve. The latest head has passing lint, build/typecheck, all eight server shards, shared/web tests and release smoke. The older cancelled fingerprint run was superseded by a successful run on the same head. CodeRabbit reviewed the latest head and its sole earlier benchmark finding is addressed by removal and resolved. Human code review is still welcome; this note only clarifies the stale benchmark/configuration reason.
@maria-rcks could you review the scanner change, especially escape-payload boundaries and the shared synchronous regex cursor? The latest head has green runnable CI, no unresolved CodeRabbit findings, and more than 15 minutes without a new real finding. Focused tests and a fresh batch of three independent Codex reviews passed before commit. Benchmark code is local-only and absent from the final diff; workload limits are in the PR description.
