Command output treats a horizontal tab as a single printable column. When a tab is followed by a carriage return or a cursor movement on the same line, later writes land in the wrong cells and text is lost. For example, A\tB\rXY renders as XYB instead of XY B (what a real terminal shows), and A\tB followed by ESC[9G X renders as A\tB X instead of A X.
Change
In packages/shared/src/terminalOutput.tsfeed(), HT is no longer treated as printable. It moves the cursor to the next eight-column tab stop via the existing moveTo(). Cells crossed by a tab stay intact, and a later write pads only an empty gap. A trailing tab moves the cursor without adding trailing spaces.
Visible behavior change: plain tabbed output (with no cursor movement after it) is now laid out with terminal-style eight-column stops and copies as spaces, instead of a literal \t rendered with the inherited tab-size: 4. Raw stored provider output is unchanged; only the normalized view changes.
Scope and approval
This is a one-line fix of an obvious cursor-tracking bug in existing terminal-control handling, with no new settings or features, so it qualifies as a very small, focused bug fix without a prior issue.
Note on overlap: open PR #28924 (scanner performance) keeps HT out of its control-character pattern and has equivalence tests asserting literal tabs. Whichever PR lands second needs a small adjustment: add HT to that pattern and update those expectations. The two changes are otherwise independent.
Verification
New cases in packages/shared/src/terminalOutput.test.ts: tab then CR, tab then CHA/CUP across a chunk boundary, tab over existing text, trailing tab, plain tab. Each also checks resume/reconnect continuity, and the tab inputs are added to the existing chunk-split invariance test. Base: 7 failing / 16 passing. Head: 23 passing.
vp test run on the shared terminalOutput, server CommandOutputHub and client-runtime commandOutput tests: 3 files, 32 passing. The recorded Codex command_output_streaming integration scenario passes.
vp run check:changed passes.
Integrated local check: an isolated dev app with a temporary home. The bytes from a real local printf 'A\tB\rXY\n' were inserted into a completed command record (synthetic fixture), then shown through the real server normalization and the real command-output panel.
Before (main)
After
Based on c0ec87a; merges cleanly with current main (no overlapping files).
Not checked
No live provider stream was run; the output was a synthetic fixture. I did not check desktop or mobile sessions separately. Width accounting is still per UTF-16 code unit, as before, so a tab after wide characters may not align exactly as in a real terminal. Repo-wide checks were not run.

Move horizontal tabs to the next eight-column stop without changing existing cells. Cover carriage returns, absolute cursor moves, chunk boundaries, and resume continuity.

Explanation
The title "fix(shared): honor tab stops in command output cursor tracking" matches the main change. The diff makes horizontal tabs move the cursor to the next eight-column stop in terminalOutput.ts feed(), instead of treating HT as a printable column. It follows the conventional commit format and names the scope and the affected behavior.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template well. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections, plus a Not checked section. The problem is clear, with reproduction examples (A\tB\rXY renders as XYB). The change names the file and function, and it explains the visible behavior change. The scope section explains why no prior issue is needed for a small bug fix and notes the overlap with PR #28924. Verification lists focused tests with results (7 failing/16 passing at base, 23 passing at head), the related test runs, and before/after screenshots. The Not checked section states the gaps. The template asks for a linked issue or maintainer approval, or an explanation of why a prior issue is not needed. The author gives that explanation, so the section is complete. The description also ends with the agent/model attribution the template asks for.

Keep tabs from moving the cursor backward.
If maxChars exceeds 65,536, a line can already extend beyond that column. A tab then calls moveTo, which clamps the cursor back to 65,536. For example, with maxChars = 100_000, "a".repeat(90_000) + "\tZ" overwrites an earlier a instead of appending Z.
Use a bounded cursor limit that allows the next tab stop for the configured output size.

verified head 5669e6a50cab28435b1eada3cfd8e2edf6183a6d against github/main at 61c3794c32 on linux. installed both checkouts with vp i and ran one isolated dev server at a time. used playwright from the repo with /usr/bin/google-chrome, added a real git project through the ui, selected codex gpt-6.1-sol, and submitted real provider turns. no synthetic records, fixtures, or source changes.
the same shell command returned raw tabs, carriage returns, and ansi escapes on both revisions, with exit code 0. expanded the actual chat command rows and read their rendered output:
input main pr head
A\tB\rXY XYB XY B
A\tB + ESC[9G X A\tB X A X
abcdefghij\rA\tX A\tXdefghij AbcdefghXj
plain\tvalue literal tab plain value
trail\t trailing tab trail
additional real codex commands confirmed A\tB followed by ESC[1;9H X gives A X, and abcdefgh\tX gives eight spaces before X. nearby carriage-return progress redraw still gives [3/3] done; ansi red still renders red. reloaded during the turn, then again after completion; the completed output remains correct after reload. opened and inspected the command output through the real client/server path.
blacksmith: all 32 focused tests pass across terminalOutput, CommandOutputHub, and client commandOutput. vp run check:changed github/main passes format, lint, knip, affected typechecks, and its 24 tests after fetching the worker's missing comparison history. the existing head has 30 successful ci checks, no failing or pending checks.
live output-delta normalization: this local proxy codex session emitted completed raw command output, but no item/commandExecution/outputDelta notifications. the real completed-output path is verified; live chunk/reconnect continuity is covered by the focused tests only.
native desktop, ios/android, other providers, macos/windows, and remote/tunnel connections were not exercised on this linux vm.
custom normalizer budgets above 65,536 characters were not exercised through the app. the existing cursor-clamp review concerns that custom-budget case; production callers use the default 65,536-character budget.
