fix(shared): underline styles and colours no longer scramble command output colours - #21542
The command-output tail (web timeline and mobile thread) mangles colours and styles when a command uses extended underline codes. With ESC[1;31m (bold red) in force:
ESC[4:3m (curly underline) also turns the text italic.
ESC[4:0m (underline off) wipes the bold and the red.
ESC[58;2;255;0;0m (underline colour) resets the pen to default.
On its own, ESC[58;5;31m turns text red, and ESC[4m followed by ESC[58:2::255:0:0m loses the underline. Expected: the other attributes stay as they were, and underline colour is ignored because the renderer doesn't draw it.
Change
Two small changes in packages/shared/src/terminalOutput.ts:
csiParams handled colon sub-parameters correctly only for 38/48. For any other code it pushed each sub-parameter as its own SGR code, so 4:3 became 4;3 and 4:0 became 4;0. Now a colon group whose head isn't 38/48/58 keeps only its head. 4:0 maps to 24 (underline off).
applySgr now treats 58 like 38/48: it consumes the 5;n / 2;r;g;b values but doesn't store them. The colon form 58:2::r:g:b drops the empty colour-space id the same way 38:2 already did.
The server (CommandOutputHub) and clients (client-runtimecommandOutput) share this parser, so this one change fixes web, desktop and mobile.
Scope and approval
This is a very small, focused fix for an obvious bug, so it doesn't need a prior issue. The parser already handled the colon and extended-colour forms for 38/48. Other SGR codes with sub-parameters, and 58, fell through to the generic path and were misread as unrelated codes. The fix changes 2 functions in one file (+11/-3) and adds no new attributes or rendering. It doesn't change any contract, setting or UI.
Verification
Added a table-driven test in packages/shared/src/terminalOutput.test.ts for the five inputs above. Each case checks the resulting spans from terminalOutputSpans. It also checks that splitting the input into two chunks at every position gives the same text as parsing it in one piece.
Without the source fix (git stash push -- packages/shared/src/terminalOutput.ts):
$ node_modules/.bin/vp test run packages/shared/src/terminalOutput.test.ts
× reads a curly underline without disturbing the other attributes
× reads underline off in colon form without disturbing the other attributes
× reads a true-colour underline colour without disturbing the other attributes
× reads a 256-colour underline colour without disturbing the other attributes
× reads a colon-form underline colour without disturbing the other attributes
Test Files 1 failed (1)
Tests 5 failed | 29 passed (34)
With the fix:
$ node_modules/.bin/vp test run packages/shared/src/terminalOutput.test.ts
Test Files 1 passed (1)
Tests 34 passed (34)
$ node_modules/.bin/vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/CommandOutputHub.test.ts packages/client-runtime/src/state/commandOutput.test.ts
Test Files 2 passed (2)
Tests 13 passed (13)
Other checks:
node_modules/.bin/vp lint --report-unused-disable-directives packages/shared/src: exit 0, no warnings in the changed files.
cd packages/shared && ../../node_modules/.bin/tsc-rs --noEmit: exit 0.
Not checked: I didn't look at this in a running web or mobile client. The change is in shared parsing that the unit tests above cover, and it has no visual changes beyond showing the correct attributes.
…output colours
The command-output parser flattened colon sub-parameters for every SGR
code except 38/48, so `4:3` (curly underline) also set italic and `4:0`
(underline off) reset the whole pen. It also didn't treat 58 (underline
colour) as an extended colour, so its `5;n` / `2;r;g;b` values were read
as ordinary codes.
Keep only the head of other colon groups (mapping `4:0` to 24), and
consume 58's colour values like 38/48 without storing them.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a small, self-contained fix in the shared terminal-output parser, with targeted tests and no changes to schemas, defaults, deployment, or security-sensitive code. Its runtime effect is limited to preventing underline escape sequences from corrupting existing command-output colours and styles.

Walkthrough
SGR parsing now consumes extended colour parameters for codes 38, 48, and 58. It stores foreground and background colours, but discards underline colour. Colon-form parameters handle style variants and limit colour fields to the selected mode. Tests cover styling and output across input splits.

Systems and components
observed — packages/shared (library) was modified; 2 changed files map to changed impact.
Before / after behavior
observed — Modified behavior in packages/shared/src/terminalOutput.test.ts: Added parameterized tests verifying ANSI underline and colour sequences produce the expected spans, ignore unsupported or malformed colour forms, preserve existing styles, and yield identical normalized text when split at any input position.
observed — Modified behavior in packages/shared/src/terminalOutput.ts: SGR handling now recognizes code 58, consumes its extended-colour parameters, and discards the underline colour instead of storing it as a renderable style; foreground and background extended colours retain their previous assignments.
observed — Modified behavior in packages/shared/src/terminalOutput.ts: Colon-form SGR parsing now normalizes non-colour sub-parameters, maps 4:0 to reset code 24, removes the colour-space field for RGB modes 38, 48, and 58, and limits expanded fields to each mode’s required length instead of emitting all sub-parameters.

Explanation
The title names the main change: underline style and colour parsing in shared terminal output no longer scrambles other command output colours. It matches the parser fix in terminalOutput.ts, which handles colon sub-parameters for non-38/48/58 codes and consumes SGR 58 values. The title is 83 characters, which is long, but it is specific and follows the conventional commit form.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. The Problem section gives reproduction sequences and expected behavior. The Change section explains the two edits in terminalOutput.ts and why the shared parser affects web, desktop, and mobile. The Scope section argues that the fix is small and obvious, so no prior issue is needed. The Verification section lists focused tests, a failing run before the fix, a passing run after it, and lint, format, and type checks. It also states what was not checked. The template's optional HTML comments are not required content. Minor gap: the Scope section does not link a triaged issue, but it gives the small-fix justification the template allows.

Consume the colour-space field for colon-form indexed underline colours.
58:5:0:31 currently remains [58, 5, 0, 31]. extendedColor consumes [58, 5, 0], then applySgr processes the leftover 31 as foreground red. This changes the rendered text colour. Remove the colour-space field for mode 5, as the parser already does for mode 2. Add a regression case for this form; the added tests cover semicolon indexed colour and colon RGB colour, but not colon indexed colour-space input.

…R codes
`58:5:0:32` applied the stray `32` as a green foreground. A colon group is a
single parameter, so it now keeps only the fields its colour mode uses.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Re the outside-diff note on terminalOutput.ts:315-325: the leak was real, but I fixed it differently in 35b0f0a. The suggested patch would strip sub[2] as a colour-space id. In ITU T.416, indexed colour is 58:5:<index>, and only the :2: RGB form carries a colour-space id, so 58:5:0:31 would be read as index 31. Instead, a colon group now keeps only the fields its mode uses (3 for :5:, 5 for :2: after the id is dropped) and discards the rest. Stray fields no longer reach applySgr. Added regressions: 58:5:0:32 (previously turned text green) and 38:5:1:4 (previously added an underline).

Ran vp i and background vp run dev separately on github/main (6575ce3) and the exact contributor head, with only one dev server running at a time. Used repository Playwright with /usr/bin/google-chrome. Created a real checkout project and thread through the app, selected Codex gpt-6.1-sol, and sent the same printf command on both revisions. No seeded data, mocks or replay provider.
Expanded the real provider command in the timeline. Main reproduces all seven regressions: 4:3 adds italic; 4:0 drops bold/red; 58;2 resets bold/red; 58;5;31 leaks red; 58:2::255:0:0 drops underline; 58:5:0:32 leaks green; 38:5:1:4 leaks underline. The PR renders all seven correctly in light and dark themes. Checked rendered spans as well as screenshots. True-colour foreground, indexed background, ordinary italic/underline and selective resets still work. Collapsing/reopening the output and reloading/restarting the PR server preserve the result.
Short runtime transcript:

main: real provider completed in 11.3s; seven incorrect styled rows
PR: real provider completed in 9.2s; all seven rows correct
neighbor rows: RGB foreground green; indexed background blue;
italic + underline; selective reset returns normal text

Main initially failed to display its completed provider turn for over ten minutes. Provider logs showed successful execution; restarting main and reopening the thread recovered the actual output and allowed the before capture. This was separate from the underline parser. No source changes or pushes were needed. Six reported PR checks are successful; none are pending or failing.

Native iOS/Android and the Electron desktop shell were not exercised on this Linux web run. Other providers, remote/relay/tunnel connections and other operating systems were not exercised. The recording shows completed output expansion, not live streaming; split-input behavior is covered by the focused parser tests. No full repository checks were run. No changes were made to the PR.

Two small changes in
packages/shared/src/terminalOutput.ts:csiParamshandled colon sub-parameters correctly only for 38/48. For any other code it pushed each sub-parameter as its own SGR code, so4:3became4;3and4:0became4;0. Now a colon group whose head isn't 38/48/58 keeps only its head.4:0maps to 24 (underline off).applySgrnow treats 58 like 38/48: it consumes the5;n/2;r;g;bvalues but doesn't store them. The colon form58:2::r:g:bdrops the empty colour-space id the same way38:2already did.The server (
CommandOutputHub) and clients (client-runtimecommandOutput) share this parser, so this one change fixes web, desktop and mobile.Scope and approval
