Problem

When Claude switches to a fallback model, T3 displays the notice but leaves the thread’s model selection unchanged. The picker shows the original model while Claude runs on the fallback model.

Change

Handle Claude’s explicit session model-change events and update the persisted thread selection through the existing model-selection event.

Preserve newer manual choices, gateway aliases, and local subagent selections. Keep model state accurate across resume and background continuations, including changes received before a continuation attaches.

Scope and approval

This fixes an observable inconsistency in existing Claude model-selection behavior. The adapter, ingestion, contract, documentation, and regression-test changes address that single mismatch.

Verification

  • 307 focused tests passed, covering reselection, gateway aliases, resume, concurrent updates, and background continuations.
  • New regressions failed before their fixes and passed afterward.
  • Typecheck and formatting passed. Scoped lint reported no errors and one pre-existing warning.

Implemented with gpt-6.1-sol through the Codex harness.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 4fe5b03

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused fix for Claude fallback-model synchronization, with bounded changes to the adapter and event ingestion path and extensive regression coverage for resume, continuation, alias, and concurrency cases. The contract addition is optional and backward-compatible, and no product defaults or static-analysis configuration are changed.

Walkthrough

Claude fallback events update tracked model state and can publish a model-selection change to the app thread. The adapter handles live model changes, resumed queries, and continuations. The ingestor applies eligible updates under the app-thread lock.

The provider event schema supports expected and next model selections. The adapter tracks current and followed selections, reports non-local fallback changes, and handles resumed sessions and continuations. Tests cover fallback frames, manual selections, aliases, and reverts. The documentation describes fallback behavior.
Apply provider model changes to app threads
apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderEventIngestor.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderEventIngestor.test.ts
The ingestor applies a model-selection update when the active thread and expected selection match. It performs the update under the app-thread lock and retains rollback events. Tests cover selection checks and concurrent manual edits.

Explanation

The title "fix(claude): synchronize model selection after downgrades" matches the main change: when Claude switches to a fallback model, the thread's persisted model selection is now updated to match. The title is specific and follows conventional commit style. The PR objectives mention a commit message ("test(claude): preserve fallback without redundant model switch") that differs somewhat from the title, but the title still describes the primary behavior change in the diff.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. The Problem section explains the mismatch between the notice and the picker, with expected behavior. The Change section explains the fix, including preserved manual choices, gateway aliases, and resume handling. The Scope section argues the change fixes one inconsistency in existing behavior. Verification lists 307 passing focused tests, new regressions that failed before the fix, and typecheck, format, and lint results. Gaps remain: the Scope section does not link a triaged issue or maintainer approval, and it does not state a reproduction environment. The description also omits the template's note on the agent and harness, though it does name the model and harness (gpt-6.1-sol through the Codex harness). Those gaps are minor relative to the overall completeness.

Claude session downgrades leave the model picker showing the previous selection. Synchronize the thread selection with the active model.

merged current main without rebasing and preserved both sides of the conflicts. model restoration now compares claude's active model, so manually restoring the original model sends the required model-change call. adjusted the existing tests for metadata updates and avoiding a redundant switch when following the fallback.

blacksmith verification at 3b193e1: vp run check:changed github/main passed format, lint, knip, graphql generation, typechecks for 25 packages, and 331 tests. two independent read-only reviews found no blocking bugs. the api-id normalization finding is already covered by the revert regression and its thread is resolved.

live claude fallback through the client remains unverified: this vm has no claude authentication. github reports no merge conflicts; hosted ci is running.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified unchanged head 3b193e154758b4af1263e4b4a18ab38cd395e7a8 against github/main at ce9e01640636c0884c4a7574a722bf1d773cfa07 on this linux boat vm. installed dependencies with vp i on both revisions and ran one background vp run dev at a time with isolated state. drove the actual web client using the repo's playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome. claude code v2.1.316 used the local provider proxy. no mocks, replay provider, injected events, or fixture writes.

  • created a project through the app pointing at a real git repository. real codex gpt-6.1-sol and claude sonnet 4.6 turns read its README using tools and returned its verification marker.
  • selected opus 5.5 and sent the same localhost-only, authorized CTF explanation request on both revisions. claude emitted a real session-scoped model_refusal_fallback from opus 5.5 to opus 4.8.
  • on main, the notice said opus 4.8 was answering while the picker and persisted thread stayed on opus 5.5.
  • on the pr, the picker, persisted thread, and provider metadata changed to opus 4.8. the native claude transcript confirms opus 4.8 produced the answer.
  • the following message kept opus 4.8. after stopping and restarting the dev server, reloaded the same thread and completed another tool-backed turn on opus 4.8.
  • manually restoring opus 5.5 reached claude and triggered another real opus 5.5 → opus 4.8 fallback; the picker followed it again. manually selecting sonnet 4.6 then completed a tool-backed turn on sonnet 4.6 without being overwritten.

short runtime transcript, from read-only projection and native provider transcript inspection:

main: appModel=claude-opus-5-5
07:44:30 session fallback: claude-opus-5-5 -> claude-opus-4-8
07:44:43 assistant: claude-opus-4-8, completed

pr: appModel=claude-opus-4-8; providerModel=claude-opus-4-8
07:49:56 session fallback: claude-opus-5-5 -> claude-opus-4-8
07:50:05 assistant: claude-opus-4-8, completed
07:50:21 next turn: claude-opus-4-8, Read, amber-23931
07:51:05 after server restart: claude-opus-4-8, Read, amber-23931
07:51:27 manual restoration: claude-opus-5-5 -> claude-opus-4-8
07:53:36 manual sonnet selection: claude-sonnet-4-6, Read, amber-23931

blacksmith-check ran vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderEventIngestor.test.ts: 330 tests passed. hosted checks report 28 successful, none failing or pending. no code changes were needed.

before, main retains opus 5.5 despite the opus 4.8 notice:

main keeps opus 5.5 after the real opus 4.8 fallback

after, the pr follows opus 4.8:

pr synchronizes the picker to the real opus 4.8 fallback

24-second recording of submission, live fallback, and the updated picker:

real claude fallback changes the picker from opus 5.5 to opus 4.8

Not verified

native ios/android and electron clients, macos/windows, relay/tunnel connections, gateway aliases, local subagent fallback, and background continuation races were not exercised live. this pass used the linux web client and the local proxy. alias, concurrency, and continuation coverage here comes from the existing focused tests, not live proof. provider-controlled revert/sticky events were not observed.
