a function's `expected` does. What another spelling holds is reported under the member's own name.
`exclusive: true` is for an option that Node gives two names and refuses under both, as `cost` is the second name of
scrypt's `N`: `N: { type: b.u32.validateInteger().optional, altNames: ["cost"], exclusive: true }`. Each name is read once, and
what it holds is converted and reported under that name, into the one field. If neither holds `undefined`, the second throws
`ERR_INCOMPATIBLE_OPTION_PAIR` when it is read: before its value is converted, and before a later member is read.
A dictionary whose members can all be absent implements `Default`. As an argument, with
`.default()` or without, the struct stays in the frame of the thunk and the body borrows it:
`options: &BracesOptions`, or `Option<&BracesOptions>` with one of the modifiers that make it an `Option`. As a member, with `.withValue`, as the value of a setter, or inside a union or an array, it is held by value.

Web query:

https://github.com/nodejs/node/blob/v26.3.0/lib/internal/crypto/scrypt.js function scrypt callback undefined options callback

Result:

Sources consulted:
- node/lib/internal/crypto/scrypt.js at v26.3.0 · nodejs/node · GitHub — https://github.com/nodejs/node/blob/v26.3.0/lib/internal/crypto/scrypt.js

Four-argument scrypt with an options object and no callback reports the wrong error.

For scrypt('p', 's', 4, { N: 2, cost: 2 }), the binding converts the options object before the callback. Reading cost after N throws ERR_INCOMPATIBLE_OPTION_PAIR. Node.js treats the fourth argument as the callback in this form and throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE.

The cause is the new exclusive flags on N, r, and p in src/runtime/node/node_crypto_binding.bind.ts. Those flags move the pair check into option conversion. The removed Scrypt::new checks no longer run first.

A fix needs the missing callback to fail before the options object converts, for this call shape. Five-argument calls must keep option-first order, as the fixture expects. The change to conversion order is not determined yet, so this comment does not propose a patch.

714:
Update the scrypt argument-dispatch path around Scrypt::new so a four-argument
call without a callback reports the missing-callback argument error before
converting its options object. Preserve options-first conversion for
five-argument calls.

Confirmed with Node v26.3.0 and a build of main: crypto.scrypt("p", "s", 4, { N: 2, cost: 2 }) throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE there and ERR_INCOMPATIBLE_OPTION_PAIR on this branch.

No code change for it in this PR yet. The fix is Node's rule that the fourth argument is the callback when there is no fifth. #46540 gave that rule up on purpose, and it needs a new bindgen type to come back, so it waits for a maintainer's answer. The Downsides section of the description names this call now.

On the two nits of the same review:

  • A row for the four-argument form cannot go into the fixture. Its output under Bun is not Node's, for the reason above. The row returns with the fix.
  • A count of the reads cannot go in either. Node reads a given option twice and Bun reads it once, in every release. The Notes list that as older than this PR. That is why logged prints a name once.

@robobun Understood. Your reproduction confirms the four-argument error mismatch. The finding remains valid and unresolved, pending the maintainer’s decision on the bindgen change. Documenting the mismatch does not constitute a fix.

I withdraw the two fixture requests for this PR:

  • Add the four-argument case when the fix makes its output match Node.
  • Keep logged focused on read order. The reported pre-existing read-count difference is separate from this PR.

If the maintainer defers the fix to a separate PR, would you like me to open a follow-up issue?

No issue is needed now. The description puts the question to a maintainer, and the answer decides whether the fix goes into this PR. I leave this thread open until then, because the finding stands.

@robobun Understood. I will not open an issue. The finding remains open pending the maintainer’s decision on whether to include the fix in this PR.
