node:crypto: refuse both names of a scrypt option when the second is read, with a bindgen exclusive member - #47430
On main, crypto.scryptSync("p", "s", 4, { N: 2, cost: "x" }) throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE. Node and Bun 1.4.4 throw ERR_INCOMPATIBLE_OPTION_PAIR, where Node reads the second name.
The generated converter validates all seven options and the callback before Scrypt::new (src/runtime/node/node_crypto_binding.rs:710) tests the pairs.
bindgen: a dictionary member takes exclusive: true with one name in altNames. The converter reads each name once into one field, and throws ERR_INCOMPATIBLE_OPTION_PAIR when both are given.
ScryptOptions uses it for N, r and p. Without a fifth argument, crypto.scrypt takes the fourth as the callback, like Node.
Verified: test/js/node/crypto/scrypt.test.ts runs a fixture under Bun and Node (28 lines differ on main, 0 here), and test/internal/bindgen.test.ts, where one GC test gets a margin.
Self-reviewed: 22 concerns raised, 20 addressed. Rejected: it.failing rows for randomBytes (handed off), two commits (squashed).
Background
bindgen generates the C++ that converts a Rust function's arguments from a *.bind.ts schema. The body runs after that. altNames are other spellings of a member.
The decision this PR withdraws. The description of #46540 says "Right before, wrong now: none", and then lists, under "In these calls of node:crypto, which are wrong in two ways or leave the callback out, main reports what Node reports and this branch reports the other mistake":
scryptSync(p, s, 8, { N: 16, cost: null }), and the same for r with blockSize and p with parallelization
ERR_INCOMPATIBLE_OPTION_PAIR
the type or the range of cost
Those three lines are what changes here. The trade-off was made to move the arguments to typed schemas. They stay typed in this PR, and no hand-written parsing returns.
The table does not have these rows, which are also fixed:
a pair with a later wrong option: { N: 2, cost: 2, r: "x" }, { p: 1, parallelization: 1, maxmem: -1 }
a pair with a wrong callback: scrypt(p, s, 4, { N: 2, cost: 2 }, 5)
the rejection of util.promisify(scrypt)
What Node does.check() reads N and validates it, then reads cost. If neither is undefined it throws at L97, before validateUint32(N, 'cost') at L99. scrypt() takes options as the callback when the fifth argument is undefined (L41-L44), and validates the callback at L50, after check().
Fixture.test/js/node/crypto/scrypt-option-checks.fixture.js prints how each of its calls ends, and which options some of them read. The expected text in scrypt.test.ts is the output of Node v26.3.0, and the test runs the fixture under Bun and, where Node 26.3.0 or later is installed, under Node.

The 24 of 1.4.4 are a Proxy of a function as the callback, and the 114 are its older wording. #46540 fixed both. The 6 left are older than #46540: { N: 3 } appends the BoringSSL error to Invalid scrypt params, and a null-prototype object as the callback is described with its members.
Left as it is
crypto.randomBytes(-1, 5), crypto.randomFillSync(buf, -1, "x") and crypto.randomFill(buf, -1, "x", cb) throw TypeErrorERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE on main, where Node and 1.4.4 throw RangeErrorERR_OUT_OF_RANGE. They come from bindgen: move every Rust function that takes a CallFrame to schemas and delete #[host_fn], $rust and $newRustFunction #46540 too and are not in its table. Their order is the order of the arguments, not of the members of a dictionary, so this key does not reach them. That fix is handed off as its own change.
The other five lines of the table above (nine calls of randomInt, randomFill and pbkdf2) name another argument than Node. Class and code are Node's.
Older differences that 1.4.4 has too: a given option is read once (Node: twice), Object.prototype cannot supply an option, crypto.scrypt.length is 5 (Node: 4), and the callback gets undefined for no error (node:crypto: pass null as the scrypt callback error on success #45475).
The report that started this had 10 rows: 7 of scrypt, fixed here, and 3 of RSA padding. sign with RSA_NO_PADDING or RSA_PKCS1_OAEP_PADDING and privateEncrypt with RSA_PKCS1_OAEP_PADDING give ERR_OSSL_EVP_INVALID_PADDING_MODE and ERR_OSSL_EVP_ILLEGAL_OR_UNSUPPORTED_PADDING_MODE since 1.4.0 (node:crypto: sync the crypto suite to Node v26.3.0 and fix surfaced gaps #32623). Node on OpenSSL 3 has no EVP_ there. They stay: it is the code that Node's own test asserts for a BoringSSL build (test-crypto-sign-verify.js#L349-L354).
The generated check, for cost (N is converted by the block before it):
if (!value0.isUndefined()) {
if (result.n) [[unlikely]] {
Bun::ERR::INCOMPATIBLE_OPTION_PAIR(scope, globalObject, "N"_s, "cost"_s);
returnfalse;
}
// the conversion of `cost` into result.n, under the name "cost"
}
exclusive is refused when the schema loads unless the member has exactly one name in altNames and its type is .optional and held in a std::optional. A dictionary with such a member answers canRefuse, which the table of built-ins reads for throws.
The three ways to spell it
exclusive on a member with one name in altNames, as here. One field for each option. 53 changed lines in the generator, one consumer.
incompatibleWith: "N" on a second member cost. The emitted check is the same. The Rust struct keeps seven fields and Scrypt::new keeps its three .or() merges.
A checkScrypt in src/js/node/crypto.ts, as checkArgon2 is, over a native function that takes N, r, p and maxmem. No generator change. It moves the eleven checks of scrypt out of the schema, and it reads the options with plain property reads, so Object.prototype.N sets the work factor as it does in Node and in no Bun release.
Not a way: a pair test in the Rust body with typed arguments. The body runs after all seven options and the callback are converted, so it changes no row. With options and callback as raw values that the body reads by name, every row is right, and the validation by hand that #46540 deleted is back.
#46789 rewrites the member loop of cppSourceForDictionary into cppReadMember and replaces b.any with b.opaque. Whichever PR lands second ports the refusal into that loop, and the one b.any of the four-argument overload becomes b.opaque.
Table of built-ins (what bun build --compile --aot is told). 1 of 6,461 entries changes, crypto.scrypt, and no id moves:
the callback of the four-argument form takes every value, where it took a function, and so has no role DescribedWhenRefused
the options of the five-argument form lose that role too, because the other form now takes every value in that position. The host still describes a wrong option of the five-argument form.
the generated chooser asks only whether the fifth argument is undefined
Four programs under test/aot/parallel/builtin-modules/ call scrypt through a named import, so that the compiled call uses that entry, and must print what plain Bun prints.
Measurements. Release builds (ThinLTO, no PGO) of the merge base 69f4077643 and of this PR, Linux x64.
User-mode instructions per call, counted with perf_event_open over the whole process. Each figure is the slope between n and 2n calls, from the minimum of 5 runs of each (12 for the rows with the second names, 10 for scrypt, which moves by about 30 between sets of runs). Two calls that this PR does not touch measure the same on both builds: pbkdf2Sync 2,985 and 2,986, randomUUID 510 and 509.
Allocator entries per call (gdb breakpoint counts on the mimalloc entry points, over 30,720 calls): scryptSync with options 0 on both, scrypt(p, s, 0, cb) 4 on both.
Property reads: a valid { N, r, p } 7 and 7. A refused { r, blockSize, p: "x" } 5 and 4. scrypt without a callback 7 and 0.
ExternScryptOptions: 64 to 40 bytes, 7 to 4 fields.
Symbols: convertDictionaryInto<ScryptOptions> 849 to 1,006 bytes. jsScrypt with the two forms it dispatches to 2,605 to 2,049. jsScryptSync 1,142 to 1,058. The three Rust thunks 1,653 to 1,856. node::crypto::scrypt 1,750 to 2,153. Scrypt::new (484) is inlined. throw_incompatible_option_pair (183) is gone. All text symbols: 113,749,719 to 113,749,200 bytes (-519). llvm-size -A on the stripped binaries: .text 108,802,217 to 108,801,705 bytes, .rodata 26,448,844 to 26,448,844.
Generated files, release configuration: 3 of 293 change (GeneratedNodeCryptoBinding.cpp, .h, generated_bindgen_bun_runtime.rs), and Bindgen.d.ts. The other 52 dictionary converters are byte-identical. ERR::INCOMPATIBLE_OPTION_PAIR is emitted 3 times, in one converter.
estimated_size is reported to the GC (test/internal/bindgen.test.ts). The test compared heapStats().extraMemorySize across two collections and required the whole size of the note. A full collection also frees a FunctionCodeBlock that has not run for 5 seconds, so one that passes that age between the two collections takes its memory off the total. With tests added before it, it failed 4 of 10 runs of the file on a debug build (DROP 1985: FunctionCodeBlock -1, UnlinkedFunctionCodeBlock -1). With BUN_JSC_forceCodeBlockToJettisonDueToOldAge=1 it passed 8 of 8. #47144 saw 3 of 6 on main. The floor cannot stay at the size: what the collection frees comes off the total whatever the size is. The note is now 64 MiB and the test asks for all of it but 8 MiB. 10 of 10 pass.
Tests run
Debug build of this branch: test/js/node/crypto/scrypt.test.ts (8 pass), pbkdf2.test.ts, crypto-random.test.ts, test/internal/bindgen.test.ts (237 pass, in 25 of 25 runs), bindgen-declared-results.test.ts, builtins-manifest.test.ts, and test/js/node/test/parallel/test-crypto-scrypt.js. The fixture and the new generator tests also ran with BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1.
On a debug build of main the two tests first written for this PR failed with TypeError: The "cost" argument must be of type number. The fixture test replaced them. On a release build of the merge base, and on bun@canary, the fixture test fails under Bun and passes under Node.
test/internal/builtins-table/: 124 pass. 9 tests that run the generator pass the 120 s limit on the debug build. They pass when a release build runs them.
Release build of this branch: test/aot/run-parallel.ts with the four new programs, and test/aot/builtins/differential.test.ts for the three scrypt overloads.

`crypto.scrypt` and `crypto.scryptSync` give `N`, `r` and `p` a second
name each: `cost`, `blockSize` and `parallelization`. Node refuses an
options object that has both names of one option when it reads the second
name. That is before it validates the value, before it reads a later
option, and before it checks the callback.
The generated converter of `ScryptOptions` validated all seven members, and
the Rust body tested the pairs after that. So a wrong second value, a wrong
later option or a wrong callback was reported in place of
`ERR_INCOMPATIBLE_OPTION_PAIR`.
bindgen: a dictionary member takes `exclusive: true` with one name in
`altNames`. The converter reads each name once and converts what it holds
under that name into the one field. It throws
`ERR_INCOMPATIBLE_OPTION_PAIR` when the second name is given after the
first. `ScryptOptions` now has one field for each of `N`, `r` and `p`.
`crypto.scrypt(password, salt, keylen, x)` takes `x` as the callback again,
whatever it is, and reads none of its members, as Node does.
On a build of the merge base, the fixture test of test/js/node/crypto/scrypt.test.ts fails under Bun and passes under Node. On this branch it passes under both.
CI on 803b2f68e9 (build 135710): 187 of 188 jobs pass. No test that this PR adds or changes fails on any lane.
The one red job is a darwin any x64 - test-bun shard. Two tests fail in it:
This PR does not touch these tests or node:http. The same two tests fail on macOS in 20 other builds of the last 60, all on other branches. Examples: 135709, 135718, 135731.
803b2f68e9 is an empty commit. It ran CI again because the macOS x64 test jobs of build 135613 expired in the agent queue. The other 184 jobs of that build passed.
Bindgen adds exclusive dictionary aliases and conflict detection. The scrypt binding uses exclusive aliases for option names and changes argument validation. New tests cover bindgen behavior and compare scrypt results under Bun and Node.

Exclusive Dictionary Aliases
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Define and generate exclusive aliases src/codegen/bindgen-lib-internal.ts, src/codegen/bindgen-emit.ts, src/jsc/JSGlobalObject.rs
Dictionary members gain an exclusive option. Construction validates exclusive member shape and type. Generated readers process alternate names and report a conflict if both are defined. TypeScript declarations emit each exclusive name as a property. The previous global error helper is removed.
Exercise and document alias behavior src/jsc/bindgen_test.bind.ts, src/jsc/bindgen_test.rs, src/js/internal-for-testing.ts, test/internal/bindgen.test.ts, docs/project/bindgen.mdx
A test dictionary and helper exercise exclusive aliases. Tests cover schema validation, value selection, property read order, conversion errors, conflicts, and refusal behavior. Documentation describes the option and its conflict error.
Scrypt Option Handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Apply exclusive aliases to scrypt options src/runtime/node/node_crypto_binding.bind.ts, src/runtime/node/node_crypto_binding.rs
cost, blockSize, and parallelization become exclusive aliases for N, r, and p. Runtime parsing reads only the canonical names. The no-options overload routes its fourth argument to the default path, which checks at runtime whether it is callable.
Test scrypt option and argument behavior test/aot/parallel/builtin-modules/scrypt-*.mjs, test/js/node/crypto/scrypt-option-checks.fixture.js, test/js/node/crypto/scrypt.test.ts
New tests record getter reads and errors for scrypt option and argument cases. A fixture checks synchronous, asynchronous, and promisified calls. The test compares output under Bun and Node 26.3.0 or later when available.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the cppSourceForDictionary restructure for non-exclusive dictionaries: names[0] is member.name and the conversion stays unguarded there, so every other generated converter is unchanged; each members.get keeps its exception check and the two reads of an exclusive member consume nameIndex in the same order DictionaryType.names flattens them. No stale reference to the removed cost/block_size/parallelization fields or throw_incompatible_option_pair remains in src/.
Extended reasoning...
The change adds an exclusive member option to the bindgen dictionary generator (src/codegen/bindgen-emit.ts, bindgen-lib-internal.ts), restructuring the loop that emits every dictionary converter, and uses it in src/runtime/node/node_crypto_binding.bind.ts so scrypt reports ERR_INCOMPATIBLE_OPTION_PAIR in Node v26's order, also reshaping the two scrypt overloads (.default({}) on options, b.any callback checked in Rust). It touches node:crypto argument validation only, no auth, injection or data-exposure surface. A fixture compared against Node output plus bindgen unit tests cover the new ordering. Deferred rather than approved because the generator rewrite affects all generated dictionaries and the overload dispatch change is behavior a maintainer of bindgen should weigh, and one ride-along test loosening is posted inline.
`estimated_size is reported to the GC` asked for more than half of the
size of the note. It now asks for all of it but 8 MiB, which is many times
what a collection frees of old code between the two measurements.
The description of `exclusive` is one line.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
I reviewed the latest revision and did not find any bugs. Since this adds a new key to the bindgen schema language with one consumer and the description itself leaves the spelling (exclusive vs incompatibleWith vs a JS-side check) to the maintainers, a human look is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
The generated converter: both names of an exclusive member are read into one std::optional field, the second is refused on presence (including N: 0) before its conversion and before later members are read, and nameIndex still advances once per name so the member-name table stays aligned.
Overload dispatch for scrypt: argument 4 of kind undefined selects the 4-argument overload, so scrypt(p, s, 4, opts, undefined) reports the fourth argument as the callback without reading any option; ScryptOptions.default({}) keeps scrypt(p, s, 4, undefined, cb) on the 5-argument one.
scrypt_with_defaults: JsLocal is Copy, so using callback in the else branch after as_callable() is fine; throw_incompatible_option_pair had no remaining callers after the Rust-side pair checks moved into the converter.
canRefuse for dictionaries now reports true for an exclusive member, so the built-ins table marks the function as throwing even when the member types alone would not.
Extended reasoning...
The change adds an exclusive member option to the bindgen schema library and emitter (src/codegen/bindgen-lib-internal.ts, src/codegen/bindgen-emit.ts), uses it for scrypt's N/cost, r/blockSize, p/parallelization pairs in src/runtime/node/node_crypto_binding.bind.ts, moves the pair check out of Rust, and makes the 4-argument scrypt overload take any value as the callback so a non-function fourth argument is reported as the callback as in Node. It touches node:crypto argument validation but not the key-derivation primitive itself; no injection, auth or data-exposure surface. A fixture compared against Node v26.3.0 output, new bindgen unit tests and four aot programs cover the behavior. It was not approved because it introduces shared codegen infrastructure with a single consumer whose design the author explicitly leaves to maintainers, and because it is a node:crypto compat change; no outstanding third-party objections are visible in the timeline (coderabbit threads were resolved by a non-author, and the later commits address the earlier doc-comment and GC-test remarks).

The emitted check is the same. The Rust struct keeps seven fields andScrypt::newkeeps its three.or()merges.checkScryptinsrc/js/node/crypto.ts, ascheckArgon2is, over a native function that takesN,r,pandmaxmem. No generator change. It moves the eleven checks of scrypt out of the schema, and it reads the options with plain property reads, soObject.prototype.Nsets the work factor as it does in Node and in no Bun release.Not a way: a pair test in the Rust body with typed arguments. The body runs after all seven options and the callback are converted, so it changes no row. With
optionsandcallbackas raw values that the body reads by name, every row is right, and the validation by hand that #46540 deleted is back.#46789 rewrites the member loop of

The test comparedheapStats().extraMemorySizeacross two collections and required the whole size of the note. A full collection also frees aFunctionCodeBlockthat has not run for 5 seconds, so one that passes that age between the two collections takes its memory off the total. With tests added before it, it failed 4 of 10 runs of the file on a debug build (DROP 1985: FunctionCodeBlock -1, UnlinkedFunctionCodeBlock -1). WithBUN_JSC_forceCodeBlockToJettisonDueToOldAge=1it passed 8 of 8. #47144 saw 3 of 6 on main. The floor cannot stay at the size: what the collection frees comes off the total whatever the size is.
