Blob.slice: type the slice like new Blob(parts, { type }) - #47335
A slice that is given a contentType is not always typed like new Blob(parts, { type }). An empty Blob drops the type: new Blob([]).slice(0, 0, "x/custom").type is "". On a Blob with bytes, a slice with a registered type ("image/png") sends no Content-Type as a fetch body.
BlobExt::slice (src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs:1765) returned an empty Blob for a size of 0 before it read any argument. get_slice_from (Blob.rs:1734) marked only a heap-owned type as given.
Fix
slice handles its arguments first. For an empty receiver, get_slice_from then builds the result from an empty parent.
get_slice_from marks every contentType that is not empty as given, as the Blob constructor does.
Verified: test/js/web/fetch/blob.test.ts. Without the fix, 32 of the 36 cases in "the type of a Blob slice" fail.
Visible changes. A maintainer can refuse each one separately.
A slice of an empty Blob that is given a contentType has that type. .type, Response, Request, FormData entries, structuredClone and static routes see it. Before, the type was "".
A String object given as the contentType of a slice of an empty Blob is converted: its toString runs, and an exception from it propagates. Bun already did this for a Blob with bytes, and Node.js does it.
Node.js, Deno and the File API.new Blob([]).slice(0, 0, "x/custom").type is "x/custom" in Node.js v26.3.0 and Deno 2.9.8. The File API gives the slice type = relativeContentType for every span. slice(type) and slice(begin, type) are Bun's overloads (packages/bun-types/bun.d.ts). Node.js and Deno read that string as a number, so they give "" there. Bun already differs from them for every Blob with bytes.
Reach. No user reported this. A run of web-platform-tests FileAPI/blob/Blob-slice.any.js found the empty case. That file passes 143 of 150 subtests before and after this change. 6 failures are the rounding that #41961 changes. The last one, null type Blob slice (new Blob().slice(0, 0, null)), needs this change and a ToString conversion that this PR does not make (see Not changed). The copy idiom blob.slice(0, blob.size, blob.type) lost the type of an empty typed Blob.
Relation to #46516. The first commit, "Blob.slice: mark the slice as typed when it is given a contentType", is the whole of #46516: the same two lines in get_slice_from and the same 7 tests, on the current main. git range-diff against #46516 shows one context line of difference, which #44833 changed. That commit can stand alone. If a maintainer wants only the flag change and not the empty Blob, this PR can go back to its first commit. The second commit adds the empty Blob, so one builder decides the type and the flag for every receiver. It also changes one line of the test of #46516 (new Request(server.url.href, ...)), so that bun test --aot type-checks the file. The two PRs can merge in either order. If #46516 merges first, I rebase and only the second commit stays. If this PR merges first, #46516 has nothing left to add. The notes and measurements of #46516 describe the first commit.
One builder. The first version of this change built the empty result in slice, with its own statement for the flag. On the earlier base (37a5e3a) that cost about 110 fewer instructions per slice of an empty Blob (213 against 326 for slice()). It also puts the rule in a second place, and each place already had a bug of its own. With the flag rule of #46516 in get_slice_from, an empty parent gives the same result, so slice passes one.
Why receiver_is_empty is read at entry. The set of receivers that get a result with no store stays exactly as it was. A Bun.file() that nothing stat'd has an unknown size and is not in it. A String object's toString can read file.size during the call, and #46633 resolves the size inside slice. A test after those points would move such a file onto the empty branch.
Why the contentType is one expression. The earlier form stored a default and then assigned over it. With a branch added after it, the compiler stored the default with three 8-byte stores and read it back with one 16-byte load. Instruction counts were equal, but blob.slice() was 3.8 ns slower (35.8 ns to 39.6 ns on the earlier base). The expression form has no such load. The disassembly of BlobExt::slice at this head has no 16-byte load from the stack, and small.slice() is not slower than on main (table below).
BlobContentType::from_lowercased. Six sites reach it: slice and the Blob and File constructors through BlobContentType::from_script, and Bun.write options, Bun.file options and S3 files directly. For an empty string it returned a heap-owned empty Arc. It now returns the static empty type. The two differ only in is_owned(), and its two readers (Blob.rs:1737, calculate_estimated_byte_size) give the same result for an empty type. new Blob(["abc"], { type: "" }) goes from 178.0 ns to 141.2 ns (1735 to 1583 instructions, 5 to 4 mallocs), blob.slice(0, 5, "") from 83.2 ns to 65.6 ns.
Measurements. Release builds (bun run build:release) of main cee9dd9, with and without this change, linux-x64. perf, valgrind, strace and bloaty are not installed.
Instructions / mallocs / frees per slice host call. A gdb script single-steps each call and counts the allocator entries (7 calls, all equal). nonEmpty is new Blob(["abcdef"]), file is new File(["abc"], "n.txt"), empty is new Blob([]).

new Blob(["abc"]) runs 776 instructions in both builds, so its row shows what code layout alone does. In an earlier session of the same run the PR build was 1.5 ns slower in that row, and here it is 2.5 ns faster. The empty.slice() difference was 14.8 ns there and is 14.3 ns here.
The same batch loop in Node.js v26.3.0: small.slice() 409 ns, empty.slice() 375 ns.
Conditional branches per call (gdb, 7 calls, all equal): nonEmpty.slice() 39 to 38, file.slice(3, 3) 45 to 44, empty.slice() 16 to 30, new Blob(["abcdef"], { type: "x/custom" }) 316 to 315.
Release binary text: 140,313,250 bytes in both builds (size). BlobExt::slice 1195 to 1160 bytes, get_slice_from 659 to 632, from_lowercased 255 to 244 (llvm-nm -S).
Retained bytes of new Blob([]).slice(0, 0, "x/custom"): 168 to 176 (bun:jsc shallow estimate). new Blob([], { type: "x/custom" }) is 176. An empty slice with no type, a registered type or "": 168 to 168.
The next three lines are from the earlier base (37a5e3a). I did not repeat them after the rebase.
Probe rows changed: 18 of 57. All are typed slices of receivers of size 0. Rows for a slice with no contentType, for File identity, names and stores: 0 changed.
Static route Content-Type, 14 rows: 5 changed. Empty receiver with "x/custom", with "text/plain", and a typed empty Blob sliced with its own type: absent to the type. A slice of a Blob with bytes and a registered type (2 rows): absent to the type. A typed empty Blob sliced with no contentType: absent in both.
File system calls in 300 slice calls on a Bun.file() (cached size 0 and unknown size): 0 to 0 (gdb catch syscall).
A Bun.file() or S3 file whose cached size is 0 still gives a slice with no store. file.slice().type is "" after .size was read, and the type from the path before.
The type of the Blob that blob.stream() gives back through new Response(stream).blob() or Bun.readableStreamToBlob(). For the stream of an empty typed Blob it is "". No spec covers it, so it is a separate question.
The row of slice in the table of built-ins of bun build --compile --aot (BlobPrototypeSlice/0, src/codegen/builtins/host/web-classes.builtins.ts:455) says that slice runs no JavaScript. A String object given as the contentType runs its toString. That was already so for a Blob with bytes, and now also for an empty Blob.
History. The early return is from the first Blob.slice (2022). #2340 made slice take a contentType and left the return above it. #33023 (second commit) moved the empty check below the argument handling, and #33605 removed it. A cleanup of stale pull requests closed both with "This is not a judgment on the fix itself".

Walkthrough
Blob slicing now processes content types for empty receivers. Empty content types use the default value, and nonempty supplied types are treated as explicitly set. Tests cover MIME handling, empty Blob sources, and propagation through related APIs.
Empty content types use the default value. Blob.slice parses types for empty receivers and creates a zero-length slice with the parsed type. Tests cover MIME normalization, invalid types, argument conversion, and type propagation through other APIs.

CI. The diff is green. Build #136382 is red because of tests that are red without this change. test/js/web/fetch/blob.test.ts fails on no lane, and the debug build of this head passes all 196 of its tests. 41 test files are red in that build:
40 are tests of ahead-of-time compilation: 39 files under test/aot/ and test/bundler/compile-aot-size.test.ts. The same 40 files are red on main at the base commit of this branch (build #136333 of cee9dd9). The size test reports the same number in both builds: 25,961,444 bytes against a limit of 25,880,000.
test/js/web/request/request-clone-leak.test.ts fails on the ASAN lane only. Its RSS delta is 64 MB against a limit of less than 64 MB. The test makes new Request(url, { body: "ahoyhoy" }) in a loop and never calls Blob.slice. Build #136333 of main has no ASAN lane.
Two builds of other pull requests from the same hours, #136390 and #136380, have the same 41 red files. Build #136382 is finished. Of its 4 macOS x64 test jobs, 1 passed, 1 failed on test/aot/engine/native-6.test.ts (one of the 40), and 2 expired with no agent.
I rebased the branch on cee9dd9 on 2026-11-01, because #44833 changed the same lines of slice.
get_slice_from set content_type_was_set only when the contentType was
heap-owned. A contentType that is a registered MIME string is interned,
so blob.slice(0, n, "image/png") of an untyped Blob had a type and was
not marked as typed. fetch() sent no Content-Type for it, a static
route served none, stream() dropped the type, and an application/json
slice did not import as JSON.
The flag is now set for every contentType that slice() accepts, the
same as the type option of the Blob constructor.
BlobExt::slice returned an untyped empty Blob for a receiver of size 0
before it read any argument. It now reads the arguments first, and
get_slice_from builds the result from an empty parent. The slice of an
empty Blob is typed like the slice of a Blob with bytes.
The contentType is one expression, so the default is not stored and
copied. BlobContentType::from_lowercased no longer allocates for an
empty type.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the new empty-receiver path for refcount/Drop balance: the stack Blob::init_empty parent has no store and a DEAD name, dupe() clones a None store and Blob has no custom Drop, so the temporary drops cleanly with nothing double-released. The other get_slice_from caller (Blob.rs:4441, BlobContentType::default()) is unaffected by the new flag rule, and the from_lowercased empty short-circuit only changes is_owned(), whose two readers (the slice-inheritance gate, which already excludes empty types, and the byte-size estimate, which multiplies by length 0) see no difference.
Extended reasoning...
The change touches Blob.prototype.slice's content-type propagation in src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs and BlobContentType::from_lowercased in src/jsc/webcore_types.rs, with a large new test suite; it touches no auth, crypto or injection surface. One pre-existing issue (file-backed size-0 receivers losing their store) is posted inline, so the body only records what else was examined and ruled out.

An empty receiver now returns the type selected by the existing string-first-argument overload. That overload discards the explicit third argument, so a three-argument call may acquire the first argument's type instead.
The result may have type text/html and be served with that header instead of the explicitly supplied application/json.
This can occur when: new Blob([]).slice('text/html', 0, 'application/json') is called using the three-argument Blob.slice contract.

Update the empty-receiver path in Blob::get_slice_from so a three-argument slice
call preserves the explicitly supplied content type instead of using the
string-first-argument overload’s type; ensure the empty result retains the same
type as the normal slice path.
Assert the name of store-backed empty slices whose size is already resolved.
The storeBacked cases check only .type and the receiver's .size. A slice that keeps the file store still passes. When the receiver's size is zero before slice() runs, the slice takes the early return and has no name. A regression that keeps the store would report the file path as the name.
Add a .name assertion to the cases that read .size first, such as "Bun.file() after .size" and "fs.openAsBlob() after .size". Do not add it to "Bun.file() before anything reads its size". That receiver keeps its store, so its slice has a name.

“fs.openAsBlob() after .size”, to assert that the resulting empty slice has no
name. Leave “Bun.file() before anything reads its size” unchanged, since that
slice retains its store and should have a name.

This is Blob.slice: mark the slice as typed when it is given a contentType #46516.toStringruns, and an exception from it propagates. Bun already did this for a Blob with bytes, and Node.js does it.Node.js, Deno and the File API.

The File API gives the slicetype = relativeContentTypefor every span.slice(type)andslice(begin, type)are Bun's overloads (packages/bun-types/bun.d.ts). Node.js and Deno read that string as a number, so they give""there. Bun already differs from them for every Blob with bytes.Reach. No user reported this. A run of web-platform-tests
FileAPI/blob/Blob-slice.any.jsfound the empty case. That file passes 143 of 150 subtests before and after this change. 6 failures are the rounding that #41961 changes. The last one, null type Blob slice(new Blob().slice(0, 0, null)), needs this change and a ToString conversion that this PR does not make (see Not changed). The copy idiomblob.slice(0, blob.size, blob.type)lost the type of an empty typed Blob.Relation to #46516. The first commit, "Blob.slice: mark the slice as typed when it is given a contentType", is the whole of #46516: the same two lines in
get_slice_fromand the same 7 tests, on the current main.git range-diffagainst #46516 shows one context line of difference, which #44833 changed. That commit can stand alone. If a maintainer wants only the flag change and not the empty Blob, this PR can go back to its first commit. The second commit adds the empty Blob, so one builder decides the type and the flag for every receiver. It also changes one line of the test of #46516 (new Request(server.url.href, ...)), so thatbun test --aottype-checks the file. The two PRs can merge in either order. If #46516 merges first, I rebase and only the second commit stays. If this PR merges first, #46516 has nothing left to add. The notes and measurements of #46516 describe the first commit. One builder. The first version of this change built the empty result in
slice, with its own statement for the flag. On the earlier base (37a5e3a) that cost about 110 fewer instructions per slice of an empty Blob (213 against 326 forslice()). It also puts the rule in a second place, and each place already had a bug of its own. With the flag rule of #46516 inget_slice_from, an empty parent gives the same result, soslicepasses one.Why
receiver_is_emptyis read at entry. The set of receivers that get a result with no store stays exactly as it was. ABun.file()that nothing stat'd has an unknown size and is not in it. A String object'stoStringcan readfile.sizeduring the call, and #46633 resolves the size insideslice. A test after those points would move such a file onto the empty branch. Why the contentType is one expression. The earlier form stored a default and then assigned over it. With a branch added after it, the compiler stored the default with three 8-byte stores and read it back with one 16-byte load. Instruction counts were equal, but
blob.slice()was 3.8 ns slower (35.8 ns to 39.6 ns on the earlier base). The expression form has no such load. The disassembly ofBlobExt::sliceat this head has no 16-byte load from the stack, andsmall.slice()is not slower than on main (table below).BlobContentType::from_lowercased. Six sites reach it:sliceand the Blob and File constructors throughBlobContentType::from_script, andBun.writeoptions,Bun.fileoptions and S3 files directly. For an empty string it returned a heap-owned emptyArc. It now returns the static empty type. The two differ only inis_owned(), and its two readers (Blob.rs:1737,calculate_estimated_byte_size) give the same result for an empty type.new Blob(["abc"], { type: "" })goes from 178.0 ns to 141.2 ns (1735 to 1583 instructions, 5 to 4 mallocs),blob.slice(0, 5, "")from 83.2 ns to 65.6 ns.Measurements.
