Problem

  • As a fetch body, new Blob(["abc"]).slice(0, 2, "image/png") sends no Content-Type, although its type is "image/png". Node sends it, and so does Bun for "IMAGE/PNG". A static route, stream() and a blob: import lose it too.
  • get_slice_from (src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs:1784) set content_type_was_set, the "a caller gave this type" flag, only for a heap-owned contentType. A registered MIME string is static.

Fix

  • The flag is now parent flag || a contentType was given: one operand.
  • Correct: the Blob constructor sets the flag for every valid type.
  • Verified: test/js/web/fetch/blob.test.ts (7 new tests fail without the fix). Also FormData, bun-serve-static, bun-serve-file, s3.
  • Self-reviewed: 10 concerns raised, 8 addressed. Rejected: stacking on Blob: treat an empty type as no Content-Type in fetch and Bun.serve routes #46194 (it could not merge alone). No issues filed (Notes).

Background

  • The flag is false for a type that Bun derived (a file name). It decides a body's Content-Type, the type blob.stream() carries, and the blob: loader.
  • Considered also clearing the flag on a slice that keeps no type. That stops its empty Content-Type:, but makes (await new Response(slice).blob()).type text/plain. Blob: treat an empty type as no Content-Type in fetch and Bun.serve routes #46194 already stops the header.

Downsides

  • A typed slice of an untyped Blob now sends Content-Type. So do its copies (s.slice(0, 2), new Blob([s])). Node sends none for those.
  • structuredClone(typedSlice).slice(0, 2) now sends an empty Content-Type:. A clone of a constructor-typed Blob already does. Blob: treat an empty type as no Content-Type in fetch and Bun.serve routes #46194 removes both.
  • Cost: at most 1 more instruction per slice() call. A fetch of a typed slice makes 8 allocations, not 4.
Notes

How it was found. No user reported this. A probe found it. #45613 reads the flag to decide whether the type of two Blobs counts.

Contract. The File API slice steps give the new Blob the contentType as its type (https://w3c.github.io/FileAPI/#slice-method-algo). Fetch takes a Blob body's type as the Content-Type when it is not empty (https://fetch.spec.whatwg.org/#concept-bodyinit-extract). docs/runtime/networking/fetch.mdx:388 says the same: "For Blob objects, uses the blob's type". The expression dates from #3123 (2023), and the Rust port kept it. So this is not a regression, and the tests are in the existing file.

What the self-review changed. The first version of this change also cleared the flag on a slice that keeps no type. That removed the empty Content-Type: of new Blob(["abc"], { type: "application/x-foo" }).slice(0, 2). It also made (await new Response(thatSlice).blob()).type read "text/plain;charset=utf-8" where main and Node give "". #46194 removes the same header in the reader, for file and S3 Blobs too. That half is cut.

Order with #46194. Both PRs can merge in either order. If this one merges first, the second Downsides bullet applies until #46194 merges. The review asked for this branch to sit on the branch of #46194. I did not do that: a PR on the branch of another open PR cannot merge or rebase alone.

Not changed. Each of these differs from Node before and after.

Measurements. Release builds of main 38afee6 with and without the hunk, linux-x64. Tools: gdb (single-step and counting breakpoints), nm, size, objdump. perf, valgrind, strace and bloaty are not installed.

  • get_slice_from instructions per call (own range, gdb stepi, JIT off, 21st call), base -> PR: typeless on untyped 122 -> 123, on table-typed 127 -> 126, on heap-typed 124 -> 125, typed hit 117 -> 118, typed miss 117 -> 118, typed hit on typed parent 117 -> 118. get_slice unchanged at 106/106/106/257/311/257.
  • get_slice_from: 647 -> 655 bytes (nm -S), 172 -> 172 static instructions, lock ops 6 -> 6. Release .text: 82,022,297 bytes in both builds (size -A). Stripped binary: 107,615,968 bytes in both.
  • allocator calls per slice(): typeless 1 -> 1, table-hit type 1 -> 1, non-table type 3 -> 3 (gdb counting breakpoints on the mimalloc entries).
  • mallocs inside fetch_impl per fetch, base -> PR: typed table-hit slice 4 -> 8 (constructor-typed Blob: 8). Typeless slice of a heap-typed Blob 8 -> 8 (untyped Blob: 4).
  • behaviour matrix (13 parents x 8 contentType arguments x 17 readers, plus 6 constructor rows: 1,870 cells): 217 cells change. Typed-slice cells unlike a constructor-typed Blob 203 -> 38. The 38 left are equal on base and PR (33 are Bun.file parents, 3 are blob: imports that load by file name or of bytes that are not JSON, 2 are the .type of a re-slice of a Bun.build() output). Empty-valued Content-Type cells 115 -> 136. The 21 new cells are the clone case above. Type-valued cells changed: 24 (21 are stream() then Response.blob().type of a typed slice, 3 are the clone case). Existing test assertions edited: 0.
  • the same matrix against Node v26.3.0 (1,092 comparable cells): of 162 changed cells, 23 move toward Node, 81 away, 58 differ before and after. The 81 are 66 cells where a constructor-typed Blob already differs from Node (copies, body: blob.stream(), the kept interned type) and the 15 clone cells.
  • serialize(new Blob(["abc"]).slice(0, 2, "image/png")): 1 byte differs between base and PR (the flag byte, 0 -> 1), length 48 bytes in both, SERIALIZATION_VERSION stays 4. A base-written payload on the PR build: type "image/png", no Content-Type as a fetch body.

Suites. Debug build: blob 154 pass, structured-clone-blob-file 44, FormData 151, bun-serve-static 47, bun-serve-file 176, response 23, body-clone 100, client-fetch 34, fetch-args 104, FormData-multipart-serialization 6, worker_blob 7, deno/fetch/blob 9, blob-write 15, blob-cow 5, s3 307, s3-storage-class 9. Release builds: blob has 7 failures without the hunk (the 7 new tests) and 0 with it. One of four debug runs of blob lost 2 older subprocess tests to their 5 s timeout. Three reruns passed.

Earlier attempts. #29258 and #33605 changed this line inside larger changes. Neither merged: #29258 closed when the Zig sources were removed, #33605 in a cleanup of stale PRs.

Related open PRs. #46194 (an empty type sends no header), #46173 (the type of new Blob([blob])), #45601 and #42016 (the Content-Type of Request and Response bodies), #41752 (a zero-length typed body).

get_slice_from set content_type_was_set only when the contentType was
heap-owned. A contentType that is a registered MIME string is interned,
so blob.slice(0, n, "image/png") of an untyped Blob had a type and was
not marked as typed. fetch() sent no Content-Type for it, a static
route served none, stream() dropped the type, and an application/json
slice did not import as JSON.

The flag is now set for every contentType that slice() accepts, the
same as the type option of the Blob constructor.

Reproduced on 1.4.3-canary.1+367d939d9 and on main 38afee6 with this script:

const server = Bun.serve({ port: 0, fetch: req => new Response(String(req.headers.get("content-type"))) });
for (const type of ["image/png", "IMAGE/PNG", "application/x-foo"]) {
  const body = new Blob(["abc"]).slice(0, 2, type);
  console.log(type, "|", body.type, "|", await (await fetch(server.url, { method: "POST", body })).text());
}
server.stop();

Output on main. The third column is the Content-Type that the server received:

image/png | image/png | null
IMAGE/PNG | image/png | image/png
application/x-foo | application/x-foo | application/x-foo

With this change the first row is image/png | image/png | image/png. Node v26.3.0 sends image/png for that row too.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked that the one-line change brings slice() in line with the constructors: new Blob/new File set content_type_was_set for every valid type regardless of whether it is interned (Blob.rs:5357), so dropping is_owned() is the right operand. I also looked at the explicit-empty-contentType re-slice and the object-URL loader of a typed slice of a nameless Bun.file — both are consequences of the flag now being correct, not new defects.

Extended reasoning...

The diff is a single-operand change in BlobExt::get_slice_from (src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs:1784) plus ~85 lines of tests in test/js/web/fetch/blob.test.ts; it touches no security-sensitive surface. The fix is correct relative to the constructor path, but two inline findings were posted about adjacent behavior (empty-parent slices stay untyped; structuredClone-then-reslice now sends an empty Content-Type), so a human should weigh whether those should land here or in the referenced follow-up PR.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs — Callers slicing an empty Blob with a contentType still get an untyped slice: new Blob([]).slice(0, 0, "image/png").type is "" and no Content-Type is sent, unlike new Blob([], { type }). Blob.rs:1810-1816 returns init_empty before the contentType argument is parsed at Blob.rs:1858-1874, so the flag the diff now raises at Blob.rs:1784 is never reached for this parent. Fix: every slice(.., type) entry point, including the empty-parent early return and slice(type), must set the slice type and flag like the constructor; parse contentType first and apply it to the empty Blob.

    Why this was flagged

    Trigger: Blob.prototype.slice called with a contentType on a parent whose size is 0 (new Blob([]).slice(0, 0, "image/png"), new Blob([]).slice("image/png"), an empty formData File, Bun.file(emptyPath).slice("text/csv")). Blob.rs:1810 tests self.size.get() == 0 and returns Blob::init_empty at Blob.rs:1811 before Blob.rs:1858-1874 reads the contentType argument, so get_slice_from and the new flag logic at Blob.rs:1784/1794 never run. The result has type "" and flag false; the File API slice steps require type = contentType regardless of size, and Node returns "image/png". The PR's new test at test/js/web/fetch/blob.test.ts:680-685 only covers an empty slice of a non-empty parent, so this sibling site in the same function stays unfixed and untested. The base behaves the same, but the PR claims slice() now types like the constructor for every valid type and REVIEW.md asks for the whole class in one PR. Remedy: parse the contentType before the empty early return and set it on the empty Blob with the flag true.

    Verification: Blob.prototype.slice with a contentType on a parent whose size is 0 returns init_empty at /home/claude/bun/src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs:1810-1816 before contentType is parsed at 1858-1874, so the flag logic at 1784/1793-1794 never runs and the result has empty type. Pre-existing: the base behaves identically on this path. The new test covers only a non-empty parent.

🟡 (optional) Callers who structuredClone or postMessage a slice typed with an interned MIME, then re-slice it with no type, now send an empty Content-Type: header as a fetch body where the base sends none. Blob.rs:1786-1794 copies the parent's flag unconditionally but copies the parent's type only when it is Static; a deserialized clone's type is Owned (Blob.rs:3945), so the re-slice ends with an empty type and content_type_was_set true. Fix: a slice whose type ends up empty must not carry a raised flag (or inherit Owned parent types too via the cheap Arc clone), covering clones, worker transfers and heap-typed parents alike. The description lists this as a downside deferred to #46194; until that merges the wire header is wrong.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: structuredClone(new Blob(["abc"]).slice(0, 2, "image/png")).slice(0, 2) (or the same blob received via postMessage) used as a fetch/Request body. Blob.rs:1784 now sets content_type_was_given for the interned "image/png", so the original slice's flag is true and is serialized (Blob.rs:704). On deserialize the type becomes BlobContentType::Owned with the flag true (Blob.rs:3943-3946). The re-slice at Blob.rs:1786-1792 only inherits a Static type, so it sets an empty type, yet Blob.rs:1793-1794 inherits the flag as true. has_content_type_from_user (webcore_types.rs:388) then reports true and fetch emits a Content-Type header with an empty value. On the base branch the original slice's flag stayed false for an interned type, so the clone and re-slice sent no header. The author's own matrix counts 21 new empty-valued Content-Type cells from this case and defers the fix to the separate, unmerged #46194.

Verification: Trigger: structuredClone a slice typed with a registered MIME, re-slice it with no contentType, use it as a fetch body. Blob.rs:1784 raises the flag for a Static type; deserialize restores the type as Owned, so on re-slice line 1791 stores the empty default while line 1794 raises the flag. fetch.rs:1496 then sends an empty Content-Type: where base sent none. Not covered by the new tests.

Walkthrough

Blob slices now mark a nonempty supplied content type as explicitly set, whether the type is owned or borrowed. Tests compare type behavior across slice sources, MIME types, and consumers.

Use describe.each() for the slice-source cases.

The new cases use test.each(). Move the cases into describe.each() and keep the assertion in a nested test(). As per coding guidelines, “Use describe.each() for parameterized tests.”
