What does this PR do?

Blob.prototype.slice resolves a negative start or end against the blob's size. A Bun.file() whose size has not been looked up yet has size == MAX_SIZE (unknown), so slice(-n) counted from MAX_SIZE instead of from the end of the file. The slice then points far past the end of the file and reads the wrong bytes.

// /tmp/a.txt contains "hello world\n"
await Bun.file("/tmp/a.txt").slice(-5).text();
// bun 1.4.4: "hello" (the first 5 bytes), expected "orld\n"

slice now calls resolve_size() (the same stat that .size does) first when the size is unknown and start or end is a negative number. Non-negative arguments still do not stat.

How did you verify your code works?

  • Added a test to test/js/bun/util/bun-file.test.ts (negative start, negative start and end, negative end, out-of-range negative, and a file whose .size was read before).
  • With bun 1.4.4 the test fails.
  • I could not build Bun locally (no Rust toolchain on this machine), so I have not run bun bd test on this change.

Walkthrough

When a Blob has an unknown size, slice now resolves that size before calculating bounds if the numeric start or end is negative. Tests cover negative bounds on Bun.file().slice().

Changes

Blob slice bounds

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve size and verify negative bounds
src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs, test/js/bun/util/bun-file.test.ts
BlobExt::slice resolves an unknown size before calculating negative bounds. Tests cover negative offsets, bounds beyond the file, and slicing after reading file.size.

Negative slices of files that cannot be statted can report incorrect bounds. This is a bounded risk, but it should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

Do not convert a failed stat into size zero.

When resolve_file_stat cannot stat the file, seekable remains unset. resolve_size then sets self.size to 0, so a negative-bound slice() becomes a zero-length file-backed Blob and reports incorrect bounds. Distinguish stat failure from an empty file and return a recoverable error when slice() requires the file size.

The later read still uses the file path because needs_to_read_file() is true for every file store, so this does not suppress the eventual read error. The size and slice metadata are still incorrect.

A note on how this PR and #41961 meet. #41961 makes Blob.slice round a fractional offset half to even, as the File API's [Clamp] long long says. The patch of this PR applies on that branch with no conflict, but the two then disagree for an offset in (−1, −0.5).

Example, on a file whose size is not read yet: Bun.file(p).slice(-0.6).

Whichever of the two lands second needs the guard to read the converted value. After #41961 that is clamp_long_long(start) < 0, and the same for end. A test cell for Bun.file(p).slice(-0.6) on a file whose size was not read pins it.
